Waited Forever for this!.......2006-04-21

My best friend from high school introduced me to Breakwater's music back in the late 70's. She had the original album, and my uncle had the Splashdown 8-track tape. I've had both of these on CD for about 7 years now, but I had to order them from Japan. They were definitely worth the cost, and the wait. My favorites from both CDs are No Limits, Work it Out, You know I love you, Say you love me, Time, Love of My life.

If you love true "Old School", you definitely need to add Breakwater's CDs to your collection.

Okay, here's what it was like. We would all get together at Daved Kalish's house (Yeah, Dave from Beckmire Brothers and Rickie Lee Jones--he had the big basement). All the Phila players would be there: Kay Willians, Steve Green, Louis Johnson, "Stawberry" (remember him, on bass?), "Tapestry" (what a band), Sumi "Morris" Tonoka (a few times), Rob Sultzman (world best guitar player-with his White Falcon), myself (always), Steve Berlin (went to Cali and started something like, oh yeah, Los Lobos) and so many others.
Anyway, we all knew that everybody at Dave's house were the best players in the country, the issue was producers (marketing). That's what happend to Breakwater and the other super funk Plilly bands. Warners ans some of the other labels had really bad marketing teams. Can you imagine Breakwater not being "good enough" to be pumped with N's (money)? Everybody that wrote a review here is right--this is beyond the beyond, and I was in the studio for some of it. And, I heard some of these tunes coming to be (slowly and with lots of sweat, disagreement, and attention to every detail. Great stuff (we all thought the Spashdown recording, though slightly better in production values, was not a perfect second outing. But still great, by any standerd.
I know that some of the past reviewers have to know each other. I challege anyone who recognizes my name to email me so we might see about getting everybody back together--you never know.....

One of a Kind.......2003-01-26

My brother is 6 years older than I am. He used to play this record a lot. When he was gone, I would sneak in and play it too. I have the LP in my possession now and have been looking for the CD forever. My two favorites are "Work It Out" and "You Know I Love You." This is a gem. It brought tears to my eyes tonite to find it.

Breezy soul.......2001-04-30

This album is a rare treasure that gets sorely overlooked. I read about the group and decided to explore them. I found this album in a used LP shop, and man, was I blown away. Nice vocals, and an extremely tight instrumental base make his album a must have. The groove is tight, and never to aggressive. The album has a steady flow... it brings to mind jazzy soul like Maze or Patrice Rushen. This album is throughly enjoyable. I am just glad it is on CD, because it's well worth the cost. For furher enjoyment, try out the equally engaging "Splashdown," their second and final album.

Im from ATHENS GA. originaly from philly i remember breakwater from the early 70's when they played in the park ,belmont plateau with groups like rated-x, brutus ,soul devalients,and cross town traffic. BOY!! THOSE WHERE THE DAYS,it was about the horns then and breakwater always won the battle of the bands. they are funk legends off the scale and i rate these albums 5*****.I can't afford to get them but if i could i would put them on the top of the list.

Two -album wonder.......2006-01-04

I have FOND memories of these guys. They broke out with their debut album with the "lips on a waterhose" album cover, the same time I was coming into my dating ages. Although they only put out two albums, these were comparably the best albums of their era. (Tie between Breakwater and Heatwave) I notice mainly people from Philly, as I am originally, have knowledge of "Breakwater". WDAS radio had a great ear back then for great music. These LP's are timeless. I still pump these on the regular, and never get tired of hearing it. If you have never heard of these guys, take time to listen. You'll be glad you did. It was groups like Breakwater that laid the foundation for the Funk/Neo-Soul sound we enjoy today. All you youngbucks!! Take Note!!

Breakwater - East Coast Style.......2002-01-03

The year was 1980, the day was not too long after I bought my brand new 1979 Buick Riviera, and I was living in Philly at the time when I first heard the sounds of Breakwater. The rhythm and energy of the group was off the hook and literally blew me away. As soon as I heard a cut from the Breakwater album I went and bought the tape, which I still have, and am now extremely happy to be able to find it on CD. The rhythm and soul of this group is as dynamic as that of AWB and we all know how big they are to us music lovers. So it doesn't bother me that Breakwater did not follow up their Splashdown album with another because the sounds from their only two albums are sounds that will last a lifetime.
