Product Description
Powerhouse Records is proud to present the latest release from our "Guitarchives" Series--"Danny Gatton Live In 1977-The Humbler Stakes His Claim" This release is comprised of newly discovered and previously unheard recordings made by Danny Gatton's sound engineer Chris Murphy throughout 1977 and 1978. What distinguishes these recordings from other live recordings is that these recordings were actually made with microphones placed in the audience, so there is a real feeling of being right there in the club with glasses clanking and audience responses, rather than the more sterile sound of a "board mix".The set list features some Gatton repetoire standbys such as "Harlem Nocturne" two very different versions (one which features a cameo by the late Dick Heintze on Hammond Organ), "Fingers On Fire", Nit Pickin'", "Canadian Sunset" and two scorching renditions of "Sweet Georgia Brown" as well as obscure songs like Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce" and two Blues numbers: the slow blues "Danny's Blues" and the shuffle "Walkin' With Danny".
A must for Gatton and guitar fans!!!!!!!

Album Description
The master of the Fender Telecaster, the late Roy Buchanan is commemorated on a archival CD release by Powerhouse Records. The CD, titled Roy Buchanan: American Axe Live in 1974, features highlights from two searing club sets Buchanan played over 30 years ago. All the material is previously unreleased. The music on this hour-long disc reveals Roy Buchanan at the height of his awe-inspiring powers, delivering soulful ballads, wrenching blues, and raw rock 'n roll for the small club audiences he preferred. Devotees of blues, rock, country, and jazz will find here the tone, technique and emotive power of a masterful performer whose work still overshadows those he influenced. It's clear from these recordings why guitarists and music industry insiders from the 1950's to this day include Buchanan among a handful of the most original and influential players. The CD's set list includes Buchanan classics such as "The Messiah Will Come Again" (a first-ever live version), his siganture "Roy's Bluz", "Hey Joe" (a tribute to Jimi Hendrix) and the hypnotic lament "Sweet Dreams". The balance of songs draws on classics from the golden age of American popular music, including "C.C. Ryder", "I Hear You Knockin'", Get Out Of My Life, Woman", and "Further On Up The Road", delivered in Buchanan's trademark fashion, seductive yet riveting, grooving and explosive. Phil Carson, author of the book Roy Buchanan: American AxeCustomer Reviews:
Talent, Soul, and Heart.......2007-03-19
That was it.
Everyday day now, more and more people are "discovering" Roy and wishing they could have been there.
Solid guitar licks.Sound quality on some songs are raw........2007-03-15
However, the only problem I have with the cd is that a few tunes sound like they were taped from a hand held recorder in the third row.
Almost like it was a bootleg tape.
Other then that small problem it's a cd I've played again and again.
After all, Buchanan is one of the top ten best guitar players ever!!!!!
Mott's American Axe.......2006-08-04
We all know Jimi Hendrix , the man was a genius, no question there, changed the way people played the six string, what a showman too, setting fire to his guitar, playing with his teeth etc.He wrote songs that will remain classics until we blow up this little planet of ours. Jimi Hendrix was the male sex symbol of his time to boot, liked by all who met him. The man had everything except for enough real friends to keep him alive. If a star ever burnt brighter as it raced across the sky before crashing to earth ,the earth would not have stood it.
If Roy Buchanan stood at those crossroads with the devil to make a deal , he did not make as good a deal as Jimi did. Oh sure he could play guitar ,by the time he was twelve there was nobody that could touch him. But he certainly never got the looks, stage charisma, writing ability, or the ability to get along with people. If you were a friend of Roy Buchanan you had a loyal friend but if you crossed the man, real or imagined you were written out of the book. Throughout his career he had a reputation as being difficult to get along with ,how much of this was deserved is up to conjecture, but certainly his relationship with Jack Daniels ,does not seemed to have helped matters.Roy Buchanan was found dead in a police cell in his hometown of Reston Virginia, he had been arrested for being drunk and disorderly, and later found dead, the circumstances were considered very suspicious, but like a lot of things will remain a mystery.
But at the end of the day it is the music that counts ,and when Roy Buchanan picked up a guitar he could make it dance ,sing, or anything.'American Axe' is a fine example of Roy Buchanan live on stage . Backed by friends who were also all superb musicians ( He could not have been all bad) .These recordings are all gems and give you a fair idea of what the man must of been like in concert. The show opens up with the MC introducing Roy Buchanan as the best guitarist to have stepped the boards, and Roy gets up there to prove the guy right.
The band stretch out on opening song 'Too Many Drivers' in similar style to the way the Rolling Stones would open with ' Jumpin' Jack Flash' just loosening up the band , the rhythm section slips into its groove , and Malcolm Lukens even gets to put in a short solo just to get his fingers going ,before the governor comes in with the first of many guitar breaks that lift the roof off the place. A good place to start , preparing you for what is to come .
Next up is Roy Buchanan's own 'Roy's Bluz' a walkin',talkin' blues , allowing Roy to rap about how he feels , before hitting out at the audience with some sparkling stun guitar .At nearly nine minutes long Roy Buchanan has plenty of time to tell you what he thinks , and to stun the audience with his guitar, and when he calls out " When I get to hell" with such certainty, the guitar licks that follow it send shivers up and down your arms.' Get Out Of My Life, Woman' is the band giving the blues groove a seventies feel, the only song on the album that is to be more dominated by the keyboards than the guitar, the problem with this band was that they did not have a really talented vocalist amongst them all. As well as the keyboards Malcolm Lukens gets his turn to sing on this number , and while it is not a bad job, you really paid your money to hear Roy Buchanan play guitar.
'C.C. Rider' is then trundled out for a ten minute workout , where we the paying audience start to get what we paid for Roy Buchanan playing guitar, and although the inclusion of so many covers does show up the weakness in Roy Buchanan's song writing abilities , the old chestnut is turned on its head and the guitarist devours it , taking it from a slow blues to a rip roarin' climax. To bring the emotion level down , but the tempo up we are then treated to quick romp through Dave Bartholomew's 'I Hear You Knockin' . Then it is back to the serious business with ' The Messiah Will Come Again' which is begun by a sombre Roy Buchanan with a spoken introduction, before playing some of the most dramatic guitar on the album, making every note count showing it is not what you play but ,how you play it, a fine centrepiece to the album. On 'Done Your Daddy Dirty' Roy Buchanan turns the tables by reverting to the old adage if you have got it flaunt it , just ripping up the rule book, and shredding his guitar strings for seven solid minutes, by which time the band have given up any hope of keeping up with him, and you feel they would rather just sit back and applaud. This is what Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin wanted to sound like.
How could Roy Buchanan possibly mess this up by next playing 'Hey Joe'? Well he does , the guitar playing as you would expect is straight out of the top drawer and a fine example to any budding young guitarist. But the vocals are appalling, weak at best, with Roy Buchanan sounding as if he was standing six feet from the microphone. When Jimi Hendrix did Billy Roberts song he sounds as though he means every word of the lyrics, you knew that Jimi was going to shoot his old lady down, here it sounds if the lyrics are being read from a book . The guitar playing is outstanding though, with a nice touch at the end when the band break into a refrain of 'Foxy Lady' to bring the song to a rockin' end with a nice nod to his fallen comrade.
Perhaps wisely bass player John Harrison then gets his turn at the vocals , as the band thunder through 'Johnny B. Goode' . No complaints here for this , and it is interesting to notice the different way that Buchanan and Hendrix, handled covering these two songs , both differently, but also brilliantly, hard to say who comes out on top in the guitar playing stakes. By now the band are really enjoying themselves and have a party playing ' Further On Up The Road' with Byrd Foster huffing and puffing behind his drum kit as he handles the vocal duties.
To close the show Roy Buchanan dismantles and then puts back together Don Gibson's 'Sweet Dreams', when people say they heard a guitar sing this is the sort of thing they were talking about.A stunning way to bring the show to it's conclusion.Later Mick Ronson would play his own version of this as the centrepiece to his solo spot whilst touring with Ian Hunter.
If anyone disagrees with my assessment of the worlds most influential and technical top 5 guitarists have a listen to 'American Axe ' and it may well change your mind.

For fans of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, et al., this is the essential cartoon soundtrack as well as a monument to surrealism. During his 22 years as a composer for Warner Bros. animated shorts, Stalling invented the musical vocabulary of cartoons. Producer Hal Willner has lovingly assembled a sonic collage that showcases Stalling's compositional genius and uncanny ability to borrow a tune. It's a whirling collection of random moments, chock full of music you never knew you knew, from Bugs Bunny's theme from "Rabbit Fire" to Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" to Stalling's own "Woo! Woo!" Also included in the mix: outtakes from recording sessions, and several complete scores. --Heidi MacDonaldCustomer Reviews:
Best compilation CD ever.......2007-02-18
Only a handful of tracks are a complete score from one cartoon; most are snippets from several cartoons edited together with a common theme.
This CD is about a composer and his music, more than about the cartoons for which he composed it. To drive home this point, it includes the score from, of all things, 1939's "The Good Egg." No one would consider "The Good Egg" to be among the best Warner cartoons, but the score, heard by itself, turns out to be a tour de force that is highly representative of Stalling's work. That's what makes this CD such a great listening experience: It was pieced together by musicologists who chose the music based on its auditory qualities, and not on the relative fame of the cartoon associated with it. It is not merely a trip down memory lane (although it is that, too), but is a great creative work in its own right.
Despite the vast amount of Stalling music that exists, this CD provides as ambitious and exhaustive an overview as can be given, and its 1995 follow-up, while also worth having, is but a pale afterthought. There's no following this act.
Here we go........2006-11-16
Stallings CDs.......2006-11-10
Not to mention these are some of the finest musicians you will ever hear...a lesson in classical music, and cartoons.
The Carl Stalling Project.......2005-09-12
Carl Stalling was the chief music arranger for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. He was one of the foremost composers of cartoon music. This disk is much better than "The Carl Stalling Project Volume II."
Warner Brother's King of Music.......2003-12-02
Willner sifted through hundreds of cartoons to choose about 40 with the most significant music. He presents the music in a variety of formats. A few tracks provide the soundtrack for a single entire cartoon. Others are medlies from a certain period in Stalling's career or pieces that set a particular mood (such as the "Anxiety Montage"). There are also tapes from recording sessions for 1951's "Putty Tat Trouble" that give insight on how this music was recorded. I couldn't recommend this CD any more highly. (After you've given it a listen, check out a Raymond Scott "best of" album like "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" to see just how many of its tracks are familiar from various cartoons.)
Stalling's music, instead of following the traditional rules of musical structure (exposition, development, theme, variations, etc.), was written to follow the rapid action of cartoons. Stalling would not compromise on this, even if it meant having the 50-piece orchestra play fortissimo for five seconds and then having only one piccolo playing the next four seconds. To ensure a perfect correspondence between the sound and the image, Stalling and the cartoon's directors would agree on a few sketches and on the timing of the action. This enabled Stalling to compose and record the music without even seeing the movie. Carl Stalling was also a master at telling a story through music, with gestures so clear, that there is never any doubt as to his intentions.
Stalling once said, "One problem with cartoons today is that they have so much dialogue the music doesn't mean much." Unfortunately, this statement rings true as we move into 2004. But keeping Carl Stalling from rolling in his grave is not why you need to buy this CD. You need it because it is IMPOSSIBLE to maintain a bad mood while this CD is playing. You need this to listen to as a stress reducer on those tough days. You need this because it is complete childhood in a disc.
I challenge you to turn on your television and watch some Looney Tunes. Turn up the volume and listen while doing something else (wash dishes, write a paper perhaps.) I guarantee you will know exactly what is happening, and to whom. This was the comedic skill and genius talent of Carl Stalling.
As Porky Pig would say: "abieh-abieh-abieh... That's All Folks!"

Album Description
Powerhouse Records is proud to offer another classic release in our "Guitarchives" series, a re-issue by the Legendary Danny Gatton. "Unfinished Business" was first released in 1987 for NRG Records and was Danny's last studio album before signing with Elektra Records in 1991.The album is a typical Gatton eccelctic mix of Roadhouse/Honky Tonks style of American roots music; Blazing Country style Twangin' Instrumentals, Blues, Classic Swing Jazz, 50's style R&B, and timeless Ballads. In the mix of Gatton originals and Standards and Classics there are two bonus cuts: "Nit Pickin'" which was a Guitar Player Magazine soundpage from 1989, and did much to bring Danny's phenomenal Guitar playing to a wider International audience, and a previously un-released version of "Quiet Village" recorded in 1975 which later showed up on Danny's Major label debut album "88 Elmira St" on Elektra Records.
The album has been-re-mastered with a fat shimmering sound perfectly suited to enhance the sparkling "Twangy" Guitar sounds that are the Hallmark of the Danny Gatton Guitar sound. The re-designed package has new art work and a great cover photo of a very young Danny Gatton by Bob Berman as well as the original front cover art re-produced as the tray card art.
Titles include Nit Pickin', Lappin' It Up, Melancholy Serenade, Sky King, Homage To Charlie Christian, Sleep Walk, Fingers On Fire, Cherokee, Notcho Blues, and Quiet Village.

Will knock your socks off!.......2005-01-06
"Sleepwalk" had been in Danny's repertoire for many years when this was recorded, but he plays it with such feeling, such inventiveness, such utter mastery of his instrument, that if it were a painting, it would be hanging in the Louvre. This is a cut to be treasured, listened to over and over ... it grows more beautiful with each repeated listening.
"Notcho Blues" is, I think, a tribute to Roy Buchanan, Danny's elder fellow Tele player, from whom he picked up a lot of guitar. Roy has a similar sounding cut on one of his albums, except his blues stays on the tonic for the entire piece. Danny stays on the tonic for an extended period, but then moves to the subdominant and completes the blues form. This is done so dramatically and with such soul, that it will blow you away. Awesome!!
"Fingers on Fire" shows Danny's humorous side as well as demonstrating his monster technique. It is the musical equivalent of a Marx Brothers movie.
"Cherokee" is Danny's tribute to his first musical influence, Les Paul. He does an admirable job imitating Les, with the help of some overdubbing.
"Lappin' it Up" is played on a lap steel guitar, and The Charlie Christian piece is played on a big Gibson.
"Melancholy Serenade", Jackie Gleason's TV theme, is given the royal treatment. This cut shows why Danny was really one of a kind: he didn't play his guitar like most other guitarists. On this cut, he plays it as if it were a tenor saxophone. His solo is so funky, so full of soul, you can imagine Cannonball Adderly (on tenor) playing it (his lines are definitely not those of a guitarist). He could make his Tele sound like a B-3 organ, a pedal steel, a cow bell, etc.
The other songs are equally delightful. This CD is a must for any fans of Danny, of guitar, or just of plain great music.

Protean, Dynamic, Inspiring!.......2004-05-20
So, now arrives this most extraordinary CD, and I would tell you that if you honestly and deeply love Celtic/Balkan/American music, you will find no better exposition of it in the course of your life than this marvellous outing. Wandering about Australia with colleague Rens Van Der Zalm, Irvine conceived a concert tour of such inspiring dimensions that he knew who he needed on board to make it happen. Nikola Parov, a friend from the EAST WIND and RAINY SUNDAYS sessions, Bill Molsky from the American side of the equation and Donal Lunny came on board to create this masterpiece, which features many highlights from Andy's career and influences.
He is, as always, the Irish Woody Guthrie, and certainly that comes through in his homage to his hero, "Never Tire of The Road." It is quintessentially Guthrie, and equally so Irvine. The accompaniement throughout plays to the strengths of all the msuicians. Lunny, for his part, had only to contribute the high end to Irvine's leads, and then produce what was an exceptionally well recorded concert. It must be of enormous relief to him not to have to shoulder the whole thing, and I'm not sure that in spite of his own talents, there was anything he could have added that Irvine had not already set in motion. Parov brings that Balkan drive to the fore in the meat of the Romanian, Slavic, and Macedonian proceedings, all of which astound you in the hairpin execution of complex and compelling time signatures. And yet this is just as passionately evoked dance music as it is a test for a musician's prowess. Molsky and Irvine creatively connect the way that traditional musics washed upon the shores of America and impacted what had arrived prior thereto. It is just a wonder to listen to the bleed of Eastern European, to Irish to Appalachian musics as they find new cross-fertilizations.
And through it all shines Irvine and Van Der Zalm, the core duo that drives, inspires, guides, and demands of the colleagues all and everything. This is a concert that demands you stand and cheer as lustily as your heart and soul can muster. It is positively a career defining moment for all of them. It would be positively criminal for this CD not to reach and impact a larger audience. If you buy this (and you must!), compel others to listen. In very short order I have found the folks I've lent this to, enthralled and asking that same question: "Where has this guy been and I wish I knew about him sooner". Well, you have heard him. No Irish artist alive, and even some now dead, who has heard Irvine can say they were not influenced by him. Irish music itself would not be what it is today, had it not been for the arrival of Andy Irvine. Come listen to this, get inside this man's avocation, and it is very much a calling for him. He is as no other has been. Every one who comes after is by virue of him. And this is an inspiring document.
