Pop music has a virtual anti-pantheon of artists foiled by drugs, tragedy, and cruel fortunes. Indeed cult R&B star Howard Tate seems to have hit some sort of fateful trifecta in the mid-'70s, not only cutting short a promising career but leading to one of the most puzzling "whatever happened to?" stories in pop music. While Tate's vibrant 1960's hits lived on in covers by everyone from Janis Joplin ("Get It While You Can") and Jimi Hendrix ("Stop") to B.B. King ("Ain't Nobody Home"), the Philadelphia native abandoned the music business, sold securities, and wrestled with addiction until a mid-'90s religious experience led to his founding/pastoring a local church--and eventually to a fateful reunion with producer/writer Jerry Ragovoy, the original partner in Tate's abandoned musical legacy. Ragovoy calls Tate "the missing link between Jackie Wilson and Al Green," and the veteran team wastes no time showing it here, whether lighting up the bluesy "Mama Was Right" and "Sorry, Wrong Number" with a sinewy tenor that's miraculously persevered decades of neglect, bringing gospel fervor to the Elvis Costello co-written "Either Side of the Same Time" and "Get It While You Can," or playfully bobbing `n' weaving with the Uptown Horns on "She May Be White (But She Be Funky)." The album's classic Philly soul sound may break little new ground, but just hearing Howard Tate's taut, emotion-packed voice dart and soar like it's 1968 again is more than enough recommendation. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
The Legendary Soul Singer's Greatest Hits LiveOne of the last great soul singers still standing, Howard Tate disappeared, literally, after a run of R&B hits in the late '60s. Now, more than 30 years later, he's back with Live, the culmination of his entire career. His only concert album, Live captures Tate bringing his classic old-school soul intensity to currently out-of-print R&B and Pop chart hits such as "Get It While You Can" (covered by Janis Joplin), "Stop" (covered by Jimi Hendrix), "Ain't Nobody Home" (covered by B.B. King) and "Look At Granny Run, Run" (covered by Ry Cooder).
In addition to his classic '60s recordings, Tate also includes a number of gems from his '70s albums, as well as his 2003 comeback album, Rediscovered. The result is a testament to an influential and still-vital soul master.

The greatest soul singer ever to fall below '60s pop radar, Howard Tate remains a tantalizing cipher remembered only through explosive cover versions of his late '60s singles by a blue-chip array of fans including Janis Joplin, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and Ry Cooder. Tate's original versions were even better: his ecstatic falsetto, sinuous tenor releases, and gruff asides placed him in a category of R&B vocal stylists as lofty as his stratospheric pompadour. But the Macon-born, Philadelphia-raised former doo-wopper eluded broader acclaim despite a string of powerful performances that just dented the charts. As produced by R&B stalwart Jerry Ragovoy, Tate's sessions mixed emotive standouts, including "Ain't Nobody Home," "Stop," "Get It While You Can," and "Look at Granny Run Run," with shrewd soul updates of electric blues classics like "How Blue Can You Get" and King's signature tune, "Everyday I Have the Blues." The singer's vein-popping performances are matched by rock-solid arrangements and production, well served in this overdue anthology. As for Tate, he disappeared into legend in the early '70s, making this mother lode of deathless soul all the more valuable. --Sam SutherlandCustomer Reviews:
1966...Ain't Nobody Home! [5+++*'s] .......2007-03-25
Growing up in the 50's & 60's, there was so much to be influenced by musically. In the Soul category, if nothing else by Howard Tate was noteworthy, "Ain't Nobody Home" was the epitome of what the greatest Soul Sounds were all about. And if you listened to Soul Radio, 1966 was arguably its best year in the 60's! Some may argue 1967 was better but some of '67's best tunes hit the airwaves in late '66.
Altogether, you had, "Try A Little Tenderness" by Otis, "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" by Freddie Scott, "I'm Walking Out On You" by Reuben Wright, "Reach Out I'll Be There" by The 4 Tops, "Wait A Minute" by Tim Tam & The Turn-Ons, and "Ain't Nobody Home" by Howard Tate. Yeah, it didn't stop there, there were hundreds of thousands tunes in that mighty year, but these were 'some of' my favorites Soul tunes that year. Yeah, 1967 was the year Otis and Freddie made the aforementioned hits popular, but it was late in 1966 when those songs hit the airwaves on Soul Radio. Of course, this is by no means intended to disrespect the very early '60's. I absolutely admired everything Soul-wise leading up to 1966.
"Look At Granny Run" is great [B+], his follow-up hit, but all you really, really need here is "Ain't Nobody Home" [A+++]! If you have to pay $100, it's worth it!
BTW, I got this CD back in the early 90's on Mercury, I wanted a cleaner version of "Ain't Nobody Home" that badly! I would've paid whatever the price tag.
I also still have the original 45rpm on Verve Records from 1966; scratches and all. ;)
This is the REAL DEAL! Buy it........2006-03-30
Rhythm & BLUES (emphasis on Blues) at its best.......2005-05-14
The CD itself is awesome. The general public may have never heard of Howard Tate, but those in the music business did. Songs from this album were covered by the creme de la creme of Blues and Blues-Rock: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Ry Cooder, Al Kooper & Mike Bloomfield, and B.B. King. In other words, the songs are in themselves great, but with Howard Tate's smooth and soaring vocals, there is a whole new dimension of soul in these songs that is missing from the more famous covers.
Buy this CD (but don't pay the $65+++ that people are charging for it). If you like blues, soul, R&B, or any of the artists named above, you won't be disappointed.
