Prince Rogers Nelson is the most talented musician of his generation, but he has often seemed strangely out of sync with his own time. Performing under the single name of Prince, he mixed European American and African American musics like few others in history. Yet his extravagant obsessions with sex, religion, and dance grooves made him a stranger in the strange land of rock & roll, while his melodic genius and instrumental virtuosity made him the odd man out in an R&B world dominated by programmed rhythm machines. Perhaps that's why Nelson abandoned the stage name of Prince and adopted an unpronounceable symbol as his nom de musique. The Gold Experience is Nelson's first full-length album released under his symbol moniker and it's his strongest work under any name since 1990's Graffiti Bridge. Less a new direction than a return to the hard-edged funk of 1987-88's Sign o' the Times and The Black Album, The Gold Experience is better than either of those albums because this time the stripped-down rhythms have been bolstered by lots of guitar. In other words, the most effective integrationist in pop music has married deep-groove funk to in-your-face rock guitar--without sacrificing his usual gift for melody and harmony. Nelson has long been one of the best guitarists around, but because his licks were usually buried deep in his thickened arrangements, his chops weren't always obvious. In the more open arrangements here, they're pretty hard to miss. With this raw music come some rather raw lyrics, counterbalanced by a genuinely romantic ballad and two gospel-rooted songs lamenting the current state of American society. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Goose Bumps!.......2007-05-09

When I first heard all the chaos surrounding the Warner thing, I was worried it would affect him and the music. What was I thinking?! The man can't be stopped! Gold is one of his most original albums. I love the NPG Operator, he is so innovative and does not hesitate to try something outlandish and new. He has no fear when it comes to the creativity of his music. I was lucky enough to get a copy of a rare live version of Endorphine Machine, it was even more funky than the CD version! Eye Hate U is my favorite on this album and is currently pumping in my CD player right now. He always knows the right things to say. Everything he touches turns to GOLD! "Right now I hate you so much I wanna make love until you see..."

3 out of 5 stars Two Incredible Singles.......2007-04-05

I know this won't be helpful to many people, but to make this as simple as I possibly can, I bought this CD for two songs. P Control, one of the few Prince tracks that work as "rap", and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, one of the best Prince singles ever. I ripped those two into my MP3 player and promptly shelved the CD, as there wasn't anything else on it that grabbed me. This release apparently wasn't commercially successful - I see it's been taken out of production - but the high ratings I see here make me think I might be missing something. Time to dust the Gold Experience off and give it another spin....?

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold !!!.......2007-03-03

I don't own a lot of Prince cds .. but I sure can tell that if you want the best of what Prince can do ... you must have this album.

It's the kind of album that you press play a second time after the 18th tranck had finish playing.

I swear ... Is that Great !!!

5 out of 5 stars Prince Or...Sorry O(-> Fans Will Be In For A Shock.......2006-06-07

'The Gold Experience' was recorded during Prince's bitter feaud with Warner Brothers,in which he chose to begin referring to himself as O(-> (or the Artist Formerly Known As Prince). This was the first release credited only to that symbol, the first popular artist to refer to himself as something other then a written name. That indulgance aside this CD is a return to form from the rather lacking Prince albums just before. The same modern elements of hip-hop and harder rock are still there but more focused and well performed, not tacked on.The album itself plays like a computer program with every other of the 18 cuts being the voice of the NPG operator explaining the 'feel' of the upcoming song.'P Control' is one of the better examples of Prince being able to successfully integrate rap and hard funk and since both are presented in tough, driving fasion it works.Like much of the material here it is very politcal-in terms of music, race, sex and social status. This ends up basically being one half rock and another half funk.Of course "Endorphinmachine","Shh","We March" and the fabulous "Dolphin" are great rock songs-some poppier the some harder edged.Prince pulls some crazy guitar solo's and riffs out of left fiend and really commits himself to the music entirely.Of the funky tunes the ripping "319","Now",the haunting "Shy" and the back to basics "Billy Jack Bitch" all assault you with rhythm. The three most powerful songs are two fabulous epics-the rock hysteria of "Gold" and the soulful "Eye Hate U".The next one (and the biggest hit from the album) is the catchy ballad "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"-it is very gentle, humane and beautiful-the flowering of a fully mature Prince. No matter what he's playing-rock,funk,pop,hip hop or some unique hybrid in between Prince is always Prince and always has his own distinct style to go on in each style he chooses to explore. And although often neglected this was the beginning of a whole new beginning for O(-> and his music. There were many times where quality slipped, such as right after this but it never last too long. This deserves to be revisited.

4 out of 5 stars You people are loco........2006-05-19

I'm not referring to the reviewers, I'm referring to the sellers on the Amazon Marketplace.

A new Gold Experience cd costs 58.00-66.00.

A used Gold Experience cd costs 20.00 AT LEAST.

These folks know this album is out of print therefore are purposely driving the cost up. Capitalism at its worst.

I want this cd, but I'll be darned if I spend an arm and leg for it. I can wait. I can wait for some record company to come to their senses and put this back in print.

5 out of 5 stars Essential For Anyone's Record Collection.......2006-09-10

Marvin Gaye is quite simply one of the finest talents in the entire history of American music, and this collection is proof of that.

"Gold" includes just about every major Marvin classic you need, including "Can I Get A Witness", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (with Tami Terrell), "What's Going On", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", the timeless "Let's Get It On", "Got To Give It Up" (all 11 minutes) and "Sexual Healing", as well as a healthy dose of rarer tracks such as a previously unreleased stereo mix of the gospel classic "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and the never before heard "Where Are We Going?" as well as much more.

All this and digitally remastered sound and great liner notes makes this a must have for any record collection.

2 out of 5 stars Inferior Rehash of 'The Very Best Of Marvin Gaye' 2 CD Set.......2006-07-30

Since 'Gold' is nothing but an inferior rehash duplicate of 'The Very Best Of Marvin Gaye' CD set, I'll repeat most of my previous review here. While the music on this latest compilation is great, it's missing A VERY ESSENTIAL MARVIN CLASSIC....'After The Dance'!! This 2 CD set (nice packaging though!!) is a MAJOR FAILURE without 'After The Dance', and THERE IS enough room for it's inclusion (I remastered the set myself to include 'After The Dance' & more!!).

Also, instead of too many 'filler songs' from the so-so 'Here My Dear' CD, they could've (& should've!) included masterpieces like 'Save The Children', 'Flying High In The Friendly Sky', and Marvin's awesome 'Till Tomorrow' from his Midnight Love CD (1983). The rare track 'Where Are We Going ?' is nice, BUT by releasing this incomplete collection, Motown missed the boat AGAIN!

I advise everyone to remaster this set (with the proper software) & do Marvin some justice, since Motown continues to miss the mark!!! In the end, you'll have a CD set to REALLY be proud of!

5 out of 5 stars From that stubborn kind of fellow to the midnight man: the best of Marvin Gaye.......2006-03-06

From first glance, when you look at something like a cover of a greatest hits album like this, you think 'wow, nice rare photo' and then you put the album in and the same stuff you had in the other greatest-hits album of the same artist is reduced to rubbish.

Not the case with Marvin Gaye. Re-released after UTV ran out of copies of "The Very Best of Marvin Gaye" (which probably had a better booklet than the one in "Gold" but hey), "Gold: Marvin Gaye" integrates Marvin's early 1960s beginnings when he was mixing rock, blues and gospel (or soul music) in songs like "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", "Hitch Hike" and "Pride & Joy", his mid-1960s soul discovery in songs like "How Sweet It Is", "I'll Be Doggone" and "Ain't That Peculiar", his late-1960s duos with Tammi Terrell (with the Kim Weston duet added in good measures), his late-1960s coming out party as a gritty soul belter in songs like "You", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", "That's the Way Love Is" and his 1968 masterpiece, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" together with the 1970's gems that we all know and love like "What's Going On", "Mercy Mercy Me", "Inner City Blues", "Trouble Man", "Let's Get It On", "Come Get to This", the live version of "Distant Lover" (shown in its full six and some twenty minutes), "I Want You", and the entire 11-minute "Got to Give It Up" and his early-1980s funk/soul synthesis/gem "Sexual Healing". All in all presenting 20 years of one amazing man's work with these rare gems:

*An unreleased version of his rendition of the old gospel standard, "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" (1968)
*Rare socially conscious gems like "You're the Man" and "Where Are We Going" (both in 1972)
*The obscure 1979 single "Ego Tripping Out"
*The also very obscure single, "Anger" from his 1978 album, "Here, My Dear"
*And finally 1981's "Praise"

If you want to complain about the negativities of how the CD was produced and shipped, go ahead, the music is all I need and as long as I discover rare Marvin gems between the classics. It's all good because I have the best of both worlds: a 2-tape anthology set that has more unreleased and rare gems (including a rare unreleased version of "Ego Tripping Out" with Marvin going "only one way!"), another hits album that includes a rare '72 doo-wop gem and this album and a rare album full of other rare gems in Marvin's tank.

I'm set with Marvin for life.

P.S., "Where Are We Going" is the cut! Go get it for the song and the entire 11-minute "Got to Give It Up" alone! It's worth it, trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2006-01-22

Although i grew up listneing to oldies with my dad, i was never the biggest Marvin Gaye fan until i went out on a limb and bought this cd... The entire second disc is fantastic, and you can buy these "Gold" reissues at a relatively cheap price for the amount of quality music you get. This is definitely a staple in any Marvin Gaye fans cd collection as it covers all his great tunes. My favourite tracks are "Where are We Going" and "Trouble Man", but the whole cd is a good listen.

5 out of 5 stars I haven't tried to burn it, so..........2005-12-13

...I can only comment on the artist and the song selection. For those two aspects of this compilation, I give 5 stars without hesitation. This guy was really unbelievable. Every song is an instant winner, which is pretty incredible when there are fully 34 songs. Marvin Gaye is almost good enough to make me renounce rock and roll; he certainly played a big part in showing me that there is more out there than just rock and roll. I don't know, if you feel the need to burn your CDs, then go for another compilation--although there really aren't any others as comprehensive as this one. But please, however you decide to do it, GET SOMETHING BY MARVIN GAYE. You don't know music until you do.

still the GREATEST !!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Collection Of Kool & The Gang Ever Assembled........2007-01-07

Kool & The Gang were undoubtedly one of the biggest and best acts of the 1970s' funk / dance movement, and their success continued well into the 1980s'. With hits like "Jungle Boogie", "Ladies Night", the classic "Celebration", "Get Down On It", "Joanna", "Fresh", "Cherish" and many others, Kool & The Gang set the charts as well as dance floors ablaze during their peak years.

"Gold" a 2 cd, 31 song collection of the group's biggest hits, is the ideal Kool & The Gang Collection. Every Top 10 hit they ever had is included (including their last big hit, 1987's "Stone Love", which is often left off most compilations of the band for some reason), as well as some minor hits that may have been forgotten about by those who are only familliar with the popular songs by the group.

The sound quality is fantastic, and the packaging and liner notes are excellent as well. Iff you only want one Kool & The Gang cd for your collection, than "Gold" is by far your best bet.

5 out of 5 stars Everything's Kool!.......2006-05-05

What a set! One disc of hardcore funk, and one disc of great 80s pop. Kool and the Gang's transformation is just as radical as Fleetwood Mac's was when Lindsey and Stevie joined, or when Talking Heads went from new wave to funk.
Disc one brought back a lot of memories for me; songs I had completely forgotten about, "Funky Stuff", "Hollywood Swingin'", "Higher Plane", "Summer Madness", and "Love and Understanding".
Allegedly the early stuff kept James Brown awake at night; the Gang was THAT funky. Proof's on disc one. The songs are mostly instrumental with a smattering of call/response. Their M.O. is simple, establish the groove and WORK IT.
And then James JT Taylor joined in 1979 and, thus disc two. The Gang is now a hit machine, cranking out the music like Ford turned out Thunderbirds: "Ladies Night", "Too Hot", "Celebration" (which will live long after you and I are gone), and on and on and on. Even in this phase they still etablish the groove and work it, as displayed on the almost 7 minute "Let's Go Dancing"... even that's too short!
Whoever put this together at Universal deserves a raise or something. The songs are chronological, well written band essay, ample credits. This two disc best of should be the standard to which other record companies strive.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart and Soul of New Orleans.......2006-03-01

As I write this, it's the evening of Fat Tuesday. A scaled-down Mardi Gras celebration in a city ravished by hurricanes attempts to add a sense of what passes for normalcy these days in the Crescent City. There are a number of acts closely identified with New Orleans: Huey "Piano" Smith, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Dr. John. But one of the pillars of New Orleans R&B are the Neville Brothers. And this 2-disc compilation covers five decades of their history from the Art Neville-led Hawketts' 1954 hit "Mardi Gras Mambo" through 2004's "Walkin' in the Shadow of Life" (from the album of the same name).

Across 32 tracks, this collection hits all the right notes. There's Aaron's first hit from 1960 "Over You," as well as his signature song, "Tell It Like It Is." As the Meters, Art had an instrumental hit with "Cissy Strut" in 1969 and "Look-Ka Py Py" in 1970. As The Wild Tchoupitoulas, they record "Brother John in 1976. It wasn't until 1977 that they recorded as The Neville Brothers, including "Brother John" and "Washable Ink" from their eponymous debut. Perhaps their best album was FIYO ON THE BAYOU. Four tracks are included from this landmark recording: "Sitting in Limbo," "Mona Lisa (Dedicated to Bette Middler)," "Fire on the Bayou" and "Hey Pocky Way." [This album impressed the Rolling Stones enough to have The Neville Brothers as the opening act for several shows during their 1982 US tour.]

The collection finishes with highlights from YELLOW (1989), BROTHER'S KEEPER (1990), FAMILY GROOVE (1992) and LIVE ON PLANET EARTH (1994), including a sizzling live version of "Voodoo." All told, this is two hours of the best of The Neville Brothers, who represent the heart and soul of New Orleans. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars Going back to school.......2007-04-16

This is a great collection of songs from the seventies and eighties. It consists mainly of full-length LP or 12-inch versions of funk, disco and R&B tunes. They generally are in the five to seven minute range. It's certainly a welcome alternative to the edited single versions that are recycled on countless compilations time and again. Eventually, some of these tunes would be sampled in later years by other artists. There are three single versions on this album: "Think (About It)" by Lyn Collins,"Pass The Peas" by The JB's and "September" by EWF. This collection is great for parties or get togethers. If you like extended versions then you'll enjoy this album.

The first disc runs 78 minutes and the second 72 minutes.

Great DVD. Sounds pretty good on my mid-fi system. I have no doubt on my Hifi system it will sound even better. Every song is worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars "Gold" Medal for this album.......2007-01-17

This double album is Lionel Ritchie and The Commodores at their best!!

All the hits that everyone knows and loves - great to have a sing along to!!

5 out of 5 stars " GOLD" Lionel Richie.......2007-01-10

A treat for the ears,to listen to this excellent collection of hits from "back in the day". When a "love song" wasn't vulgar, and the vocals were pure and simple romance. His wonderful voice will have you dreaming and wanting to try "Dancing on the Ceiling"!

5 out of 5 stars Great overview.......2006-10-12

to Me Personally in terms of a Artist mattering big time with a Group&then Solo only Michael Jackson to me ranks ahead of Lionel Richie in this category. Lionel Richie did it up big time with the Commodores&then Solo. He truly has left a strong Catelog of songs that are timeless. on this double Compilation these Songs showcase a Artist who Dominated 2 decades which to me is the mark of a truly Great Artist. a Good to Very Good Artist can run a Decade if everything goes right, but to have two strong decades as Lionel Richie did is truly amazing. as a Songwriter Lionel Richie is way up there. His Lyrics are something else.his musical stylings touched on so many styles&themes. the Classics such as "Just to Be Close to you",Easy,Truly,You are,"Hello"(Which that video is still timeless&Everytime a Lady would call me I'd use that pick up,Hello!!!!! is it me your looking for??) Great Collection&Full running time. Lionel's Music covers R&B,Pop,Country&Gospel. Lionel was hitting some notes back in the day which he never fully gets his due on. also The Man could write some bridges in songs. I also admire the fact that he stayed in his musical lane&didn't over-due things.

5 out of 5 stars Soundsgreat.......2006-06-25

A great collection of songs by a great artist. It is so nice to see a greatest hits collection that features all the original full length album versions. I am a big music fan and I hate when greatest hits collections are released with the "watered down" radio versions. It would have been nice if Universal could have tracked down the 12" version of Brickhouse, But hey, I'm not complaining. The sound quality is fantastic as well.

Let's hope Universal releases more greatest hits packages with more full length album versions.

There is absoulutely no going wrong with this two disc set.Every great Parliament song you could possibly want is included.Any true funk lover must have this set, bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation! 2 discs packed with remastered funk!.......2006-03-27

I had The Best of Parliament - Give Up The Funk & Tear The Roof Off (1974 - 1980) [2 cd set] for years and eventually upgraded (IMO) to Funked Up: The Very Best of Parliament and Gold [2 cd set]. The sound quality is amazing on these recordings. Now much more on par with the quality of the music itself.

Same great music but the sound is better than ever. This is the perfect amount of Parliament for the car! And I'm glad I made the upgrade in cd's. While I loved the previous originals, these two albums in their most recent form are the best for me.

Every song from Funked Up - The Very Best of Parliament can be found on Gold in one version or anther. But Gold easily beats Funk Up for sure amount of music. In most cases extended or album tracks are used instead of the singles. You want the original singles? Get Funked Up. It has plenty! And it's condensed down to 1 cd just like Give Up The Funk was. I'm keeping both just to have a wide-variety of singles, album cuts, and sometimes alternate versions.

5 out of 5 stars rock and rap confidential tells us............2005-06-27

They make a point of not taking themselves too seriously because they know how polished they are - Greg Tate calls Parliament the chrome on a Rolls Royce as compared to the dirt bike fender of Funkadelic.
Extras include twelve-inch versions of hits and the live "Dr. Funkenstein's Supergroovalistic-Prosifunkstication Medley: Let's Take it to the Stage/Take Your Dead Ass Home (Say Som'n Nasty)." A Funkencyclo-P-Dia is included for the funk-impaired. There's also a vision of a better world, such as "Chocolate City"'s prediction of Muhammad Ali in the White House, Richard Pryor as Minister of Education, and Stevie Wonder as Secretary of Fine Arts....

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustive 2-Disc Collection.......2007-06-10

Depending on how deep your pockets are, there are several options for James Brown fans looking for a solid collection of hits. The cheapest route is 1991's well chosen 20 ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS. If money is no object, 1991's STAR TIME box set at 70 tracks is a must-have purchase. However, 2007's GOLD does a superb job of compromising between those two extremes by providing 40 tracks beginning with his 1956 debut Federal single "Please, Please, Please" (which makes the R&B charts) through his final hit for Polydor, 1977's "Bodyheat, Pt. 1." [Note: Brown's top ten hit "Living in America" from the 1986 film Rocky IV is not included since the soundtrack was released by Scotti Brothers Records.]

Songs are presented in chronological order (except for 1965's "It's Too Funky in Here," which closes disc 2), so listeners experience the history of the Godfather of Soul from his early King hits ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Cold Sweat") through his years with Polydor ("Get on the Good Foot," "The Payback").

With his passing last Christmas, JAMES BROWN GOLD serves as a fitting testimony to the legacy of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business. [Running Time - Disc 1, 70:40; Disc 2, 76:49] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Note: This album was previously released in 1996 as JB40: 40th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION. The only difference is GOLD boasts "24-bit remastered sound."]

5 out of 5 stars 40th Annivesary Collection under a different name.......2007-06-05

'James Brown Gold' first came out in 1996 as '40th Anniversary Collection'. So, if you have that you'll just be duplicating yourself.
If you do NOT have that, then pick up 'Gold'. It's a great overview of Mr. Brown's output on Polydor.
As I wrote in my review for 40th:

Better than 'Star Time'

That's blasphemous to some of you readers, I'm sure, but hey, at one time I owned both sets. I kept 40th because it has "Down and Out in NY City"; 'Star Time' does not. Anyway, I found myself going for the 40th set whenever I needed some JB. I guess I just don't have the time or patience to wade through box sets anymore.
As for the music, well what can I say? The man INVENTED funk and rap. Think about that -- James Brown invented two musical genres. It boggles the mind. EVERY R&B performer who came after him owes their career to "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business", "Soul Brother #1", "Mr. Dynamite", "the Godfather of Soul", ladies and gentlemen, I give you Mr. James Brown!
This set has the songs in chronological order so you get to follow his progress from journeyman soul balladeer to one of the most important figures in 20th century music.
"Sex Machine" is one of the greatest songs ever conceived by the mind of man....
The one complaint I have is you can't see James performing this stuff...
So, if you have the $ and the time, get 'Star Time'. But if you're like me 'JB40' is where it's at. Hunh! good gawd!

The remastering quality is pretty good, it deserves an A. Song selection is fair, some of them should be substituted with others people is more familiar. If the full length album version of Rockwell's 'Somebody's watching me' is used instead of edited one, it'll be better. All in all, if you like songs in this CD and look for version with good sound quality to keep, I'll recommend it.
