5 out of 5 stars Blues Harp Master.......2006-03-15

James Cotton is another of those blues artists that deserves much wider recognition. Has recorded and played live close to 60 years. I was fortunate enough to meet him in the mid 1970's when he was touring. I was an immature, drunk idiot yet he treated me graciously like the true gentleman that he is. The music on 100% Cotton is modern blues that is always grounded in the delta (where he was born - in Tunica, Mississippi, in 1935). He learned harp listening to Sonny Boy Williamson, backed Muddy Waters in the late 1950's following Little Walter Jacobs. James Cotton has recorded some remarkable albums. It's a shame that his 1971 album 'Taking Care of Business' has never been released on CD. It was produced by Todd Rundgren (who contributes some excellent guitar work) with guest appearances by Johnny Winter and Mike Bloomfield. It if further example of the high caliber of work that James Cotton has always put forth...from his first Sun recordings in the late 1940's, and thankfully up to now.

5 out of 5 stars He Gives Me Fever.......2005-01-20

I have been looking for another copy of this album for years. James Cotton is everything that you ever want to hear in the blues. He's raw, he's soulful, he sweet, he's in pain, he's sexy, he screams, wails, moans, croons, and he plays a mean harp. Wherever you need to go, James can take you there with buckets of sweat and soul. Listen to Fatuation, I Don't Know, One More Mile, and the best version of Fever ever made and you'll be hooked.

2 out of 5 stars The Elements' worst to date........2006-07-21

Being the big Earth Wind & Fire fan that I am, I have to say that this one was their worst! The Elements, in their attempts to keep up with the times, went the techno-funk route on this one and came up way short. The songwriting and the musicianship were way below standard (a third grader could have written "Moonwalk") and whose idea was it to ditch the heralded horn section? It wasn't a total disaster though. Phillip Bailey's vocals hold true, especially on "Living In Our Own Time" and the single "Touch" is actually kind of catchy. Thankfully The Elements would regain their touch on subsequent albums but this was definitely their lowest point.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2006-04-06

I just love this album and I think it one of theirs best albums
of all. All music songs great on this album, make me want to boogie. !

1 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2005-09-28

This is EW&F's worst album by far! Steer away! This album alone summons the worst of everything from the 80s & the "songs! are non-existing. Don't say I didn't warn ya! (Magnetic is a little funny though, in a comical sense).

4 out of 5 stars MAGNETIC!!.......2005-09-24

First a correction then my review:this album WAS released along with the other albums in the Earth,Wind & Fire catalog on CD in the early 90's but was apparently not in print very long-I should now I have that copy.Okay I have already reviewed 'Electric Universe' once and I would like to say that I have altered my opinion somewhat since having the CD.Generally
speaking 1983's 'Electric Universe' is Earth,Wind & Fire's attempt at electro-funk."Magnetic"-a speedy tune very much in that vein is the best known hit (with a bizzare video to boot).Another great tune, perhaps even catchier is the shuffling "Moonwalk" and the smoother "Touch"-all are classic Earth,Wind & Fire with some of Maurice and Phillip's best vocals. For whatever reason the Phenix horns do not seem to be operating on this album-the the orchestration is done by synthesized keyboards. The ballads tends to be where this album falters-"Could It Be Right" and "We're Living In Our Own Time" are very good but an album such as this should've been primarily uptempo with a one of two mid-tempo tunes for good measure."Electric Nation" and "Sweet Sassy Lady" make some interesting attempts at new wave but aren't wonderful compositions, relaying more on dramatic presentation. So is 'Electric Universe' as deserved of it's negative reviews?No-as far as the first three songs are concerned this CD could easily match up to their last two-thw writing is strong but it kind of peters out after that-maybe that's a sign that the band was pretty much ready for the hiatus that was to come.

5 out of 5 stars Quality.......2005-10-17

I want to say that this sounds like Juno Reactor (before Shango) meets Astral Projection. But I feel like its a disrespect to something this good to just brush it into others' works like that. It is its own sound, and is really clean and addictive. I really liked this album, I don't know what the negative reviewer is smoking. By the way, Infected Mushroom is terrible. Booya.

1 out of 5 stars Not much electricity here!!!!!.......2004-10-08

I do not agree with the review at all. I found this cd to be boring, bland, overblown crap!!Try Hallucinogen or Shpongle , or even Infected Mushroom at their worst - at least these cds contain INTELLIGENT music , not the mindless crap served up on this pathetic cd. Astral projection are another band who run rings around this rubbish.

5 out of 5 stars Electric Universe's best album yet.......2000-11-17

If you like psychedelic trance, this is THE CD you should be buying right now. It represents an astonishingly beautiful piece of Boris Blenn's work. Divine Design reminds his Stardiver album more than later Waves and Blue Plannet (which were somewhat disappointing in their lack of novelty and overabundance of hard rythms). Divine Design is nothing like that, it is actually very melodical and dreamlike throughout. Unique and little gem Moonchild (Track 6) should be especially mentioned as true novelty.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Kenally - Writes And Performs A Symphonic Work Of Art.......2007-07-08

Never one to rest on his Laurels Mike Keneally takes a complete left turn and records this symphonic rock album with Metropole Orkest. This is truly a collaborative symphonic work and not just a guitarist with symphony type of album. Although Keneally guitar and vocals are featured throughout plenty of room is also left for various symphony instruments to take their turn at lead. The percussion section is especially vibrant in several of the sections here. I would think that this disc could appeal to both classical and rock fans. The music and lyrics are based on the children's story and for the most part works fantastically. Kenally, of course throws in some terrific guitar work throughout the disc. The album is divided into 13 different parts, but it is really one 60 minute symphonic work. Kenally's output for me is somewhat inconsistent and I was a bit hesitant buying this one, but it turns out to be a delightful album and another interesting chapter in Keneally's varied career. If you are looking for a true symphony / rock collaboration pick this one up.

        5 out of 5 stars Astounding!.......2004-12-27

It started with me finding out that Mike Keneally played with Steve Vai and Frank Zappa. From there I went to his web site and "Radio Free Keneally" where you can hear Mike whenever you'd like. Then I ordered "Dog" and "The Universe Will Provide". I don't usually like to mix rock and classical. In fact, other attempts I've heard don't really mix at all. I don't really know how to describe this. It's classical music with electric guitar or jazz with a fifty piece orchestra jamming full bore. The Metropole Orkest proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they can get down as much if not more than any rock and roll band. The whole album is just cool and unusual and a rewarding listen every time through. 5 big stars for the best thing I've heard this year.

5 out of 5 stars Not your father's (or anyone else's) "Symphonic Rock".......2004-11-16

This is not Symphonic Rock. This is not a typical "Guitar + Orchestra" thing. This is not a String Quartet Tribute to Keneally. This is a roughly 60 minute composition commisioned by and featuring Holland's Metropole Orkest. I find it tough to describe this album, other than to say that it is simultaneously quite surprising and just what you'd expect if you're a Keneally fan. That is, as you're listening, you'll be astounded, and when you're done, you'll say, "Of COURSE it sounds like that!"

There is variety in emotional tones, in timbre and in texture, yet the composition maintains its feel as a whole work. Rock audiences may find more to love here than classical audiences, as the orchestra features a top-notch rock/jazz rhythm section that is exploited in many pieces; that alone may alienate classical fans by virtue of contextual unfamiliarity. With that said, there are guitar solos, but guitar is not necessarily "the featured instrument" of the piece. Indeed, there are several solos by a variety of instruments throughout, and the melodies are likewise carried by a variety of instruments throughout, not just guitar.

Overall, do not expect the "a few minutes of symphony followed by guitar cadenzas or bands jamming out" format you may have heard in other genre-crossing albums of this nature. This is a fully realized, impeccably recorded composition shining proudly in the Keneally canon.

Special note: the tune "Worrywart Spoonguy" may be among Keneally's best: a triumphant theme, rich layering, wicked banjo, a pretty nifty solo, and that insanely cool recurring arpeggiated riff (often played by wicked banjo). Plus, at the end of the tune, a fully orchestrated visit to "Spoonguy" from the album hat!

Subtitled - The 1951-54 J.O.B. Sessions. Born in Mississippi in 1929, J.B. Lenoir learned to play the guitar at a very young age. Influenced by bluesmen like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup, Lightning Hopkins & his friend Big Bill Broonzy, one of his first hits was the song 'The Mojo', recorded in 1953 for the then active label JOB. This marked the beginning of a long relationship between Lenoir & JOB, for whom he released many singles. Unfortunately, in 1967 Lenoir died in a tragic car accident. He was only 38 years old. 18 tracks packaged in heavy cardboard digipak with a brief history. Universe. 2003.

Hamburg, Germany-based Boris Blenn, aka Electric Universe, is an extremely talented electronic music composer and producer. Under the name Electric Universe, he has released a string of great singles and albums for Germany's Spirit Zone label. This is my favorite album to date, though I have yet to hear Divine Design (Hi Fly, one of the singles that will appear on Divine Design, is awesome). If you like psychedelic trance, but with nice techno-style rhythmic sounds, good build-ups, and synth arrangements that point to progressive trance (without all the new wave rehashing of cybertrance), this is your album. It may sound a bit dated in places, having been released in '98, but it is solid and when I spin trance sets using CDs I almost always throw in a track or two off this album. Most songs are around 143-145 bpm.
