As plushy and smooth as disco got, MFSB--the small-army-sized house band of Philadelphia's Gamble-Huff production team--had a couple of deathless grooves in them nonetheless: "Love Is the Message," which appears here twice (once in its hypertrophic dance-floor extension), and the microadjusted wah-wah rhythms of "Sexy." Beyond those hits, this collection goes through the period pieces of their discography: old-fashioned boogaloo, instrumental covers of other people's funk, rhythm-section workouts sweetened heavily with strings and horns. The band's strength was throwing Philly soul's tart voices and burning sentiments into sharp relief; without their contrast, MFSB were barely more than jazzy spun sugar, though T.J. Tindall's growling fuzz guitar firmed up their edges. --Douglas Wolk

Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

91 tracks deep and five hours long, this multi-artist, 4CD set mines rare, renowned, legendary, and little-known grooves from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, and Warner Bros Records!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mm-hmm! I can smell that funky music!.......2007-06-18

Rare indeed; I can't imagine where you would find original 45s or even LPs containing all of these songs. That would be one lifetime task. The good folks at Rhino Records with their remarkable and creative tastes took out all of that hassle for us and now offers a rather unique set of rare funky music from the vaults of Atlantic/Atco and Warner/Reprise dating 1967-1977 with 91 tracks spanning across 4 filled-to-the-brim discs. Any soul music fan will no doubt want to explore this area of the R&B category (funk and I mean pure funk), but at times the flow of the music could seem a bit too much to handle. Some of the cuts go more than 3 1/2 minutes and sound like they might not end any time soon. The other case would be some tracks sound bizarre or unusual in terms of sound due to instrumentation, arrangements, etc. Such "bizarre" tracks are the sitar-laced rendition of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Steppin' Stones" with a crazed flautist leading the way on a very blazing and dizzy-sounding track. The good outweigh the not-so-good remarkably, though. So get ready to hear punchy horns, infectious, simplistic and driving drumbeats, super funky bass lines, crunchy guitars, oozing organs and ultra-soulful vocals. On disc one, some noteworthy tracks are "Spreadin' Honey", "Get Otta My Life Woman", "Snatchin' It Back", "Sexy Coffee Pot" and "Help Me Make Up My Mind" (an answer to "Can I Chane My Mind"). Be sure to check out "Sookie Sookie", "Feelin' Alright" (done by Lulu (To Sir With Love)!), and "Engine Number Nine" on disc two, "Face It" (love the female backup singers on this), "Wah Wah Man", an alternate extended mix of "Rock Steady", "Suavecito", and "Nuki Suki" (from Little Richard) on disc three as well as "Moon Shadow", "Kissing My Love", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "Chug Chug-A-Lug", "Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away", and "Chicken Heads" on disc four. Those were just some of my favorite tracks, so I may have missed some. Many are instrumentals, but there are a handful with vocalists singing about love, dancing, partying, social concerns, etc. Bottom line: worth checking out and worth the discovery. You definitely won't hear this stuff on commercial radio. Only about three or four songs you'll recognize; the rest is like a surprise. If you're into R&B and want to explore the funk side of it, you can't find a better pick, and about 90% of these songs aren't available (some or many) together anyplace else. The real deal of funk; that is "what it is!"

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS ?.....NOTHING BUT A NON STOP PARTY! .......2007-02-10

This set right here could very well be the holy grail of rare and hard to find grooves. This box set is funkier than a high school locker room! Every track on here is certified stank(aka funky). The most amazing thing about these tracks is that they capture the spirit of the times better than a lot of their more popular comtemporaries(at least in my opinion). "What it is" feels like an audio documentary of underdogs making the funkiest music and having a great time doing it. If you listen to how these tracks are sequenced, you'll feel like a story is being told - rather than just listening to another compliamation of vintage r&b music.

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.

All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!

Long live the funk baby!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Mind blowing. Worth every penny. And so on........2007-02-04

This is the real deal folks. Music with grit and soul and feeling, before the shining distraction of drum machines, computers, samplers, bling, and "MTV's Cribs". I saw an ad for this and went to several book and record stores such as Borders, and to my local hip indie CD store (headquarters to the local music scene circle-jerk), trying to describe it to various clerks. Which was about like trying to teach a card trick to a basset hound. Save yourself the agony of trying to interest a white twenty-something body-piercing pincushion in ordering this set for you, and just get it here. You'll be glad you did. The sheer quantity of great music on this is staggering. I love the mix of instruments with vocal tracks, and the mix of "name" artists like Aretha or The Meters with many very obscure ones. Whoever compiled this did a great job in selecting the track order, so it makes it perfect for a long party. Everyone will be getting up and shaking their groove thang. This is priceless music from a lost era, so grab it before it disappears again.

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment.......2007-01-28

I am a funk fan who is still by all means learning...With the passing of James Brown recently, I have tried to speed up this process a little and take as much in as possible. I think this collection of "underground" funk is phenomenal, 4 discs and never a dull moment.

4 out of 5 stars Soul-tastic... All Hail Rhino! Nobody knows box like Rhino knows box.......2007-01-14

I stumbled over this set just a few days ago, and I have to say that it's easily one of the top 10 best random-artist compilations I've ever heard in my life, and I own hundreds of them.

I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?

But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.

Absolutely worth buying.

Album Description

Enigma meets Deep Forest by way of Australia in TYA's phenomenal second, much anticipated release. The timeless meets the contemporary as indigenous Aboriginal voices blend with modern grooves in an uplifting new world-trance sound that is deeply moving and uplifting. One of the most requested artists from the best selling Buddha-Lounge series, TYA (Aboriginal word for Mother Earth) is the creation of German composer Martin Scherl who has spent an extended period of time with the Australian Aboriginal people. TYA brilliantly blends the ancient with the modern, and the melodic with the hypnotic. Great for listeners into today's latest world fusion sound! Feel the pulse and come home to Earth's ancient roots!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Vocal and instrumental sounds with Trip Hop grooves.......2004-06-19

With his 2001 album "Tribal Sutras", German composer and musician Martin Scherl, mastermind of the formation "TYA" (pronounced t:sch:ya, an Aboriginal word meaning "Mother Earth"), had a very successful debut, both in Europe and in the United States.

Martin plays keyboards and drums also utilising extensive programming and samples. During a long stay in Australia, where he spent much of his time making music with the native aborigines, Scherl was profoundly impressed with their ability to see themselves as part of a whole - his music clearly expresses this sense of oneness. Many years experience of Afro-American music styles and a careful study of various exotic music traditions have further broadened Martin Scherl's musical horizon.

The music on the new album "Akwaba" ( welcome in Ghanaian ) retains all the qualities of the debut recording, but adds new kinds of sounds and grooves, new exciting dimensions to the TYA sound.

I'll give you one and it's all you'll need: "Love is the Message".

You may or may not know this but "Love is the Message" is considered by nearly every dance music d.j. worth their salt to be the single greatest dance track of all time and with good reason. On this disc, you get the full version of the song which runs eleven minutes and a half plus the love groove bonus which is just the break at the end of the song.

I can literally listen to that track on a loop for hours. It really is an amazing piece of craftsmanship and it's so rich and multilayered that you can really appreciate what went into the song.

The rest of the album is very good, with another standout track being MFSB's interpretation of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead".

Strongly recommended for those that appreciate the classics and have become disillusioned by the state of music today.

ALL I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS IS A GOOD CD. GO OUT AND BUY THIS IF YOU LIKE OLD SCHOOL, JAZZ, AND FUNK. I LOVE THIS CD IT IS SO NICE AND SMOOTH AND RELAXING BUY THIS CD YOU WOULD ENJOY IT A LOT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Groovilicious!.......2002-01-23

MFSB is a group that uses real instruemts and real vocals to come up with these brilliant tracks. No fancy overproduction, no sampling (although their work is often sampled); just a collection of pure soul from the old school. A worthy purchase for any music lover.

4 out of 5 stars deep dish r&b.......2000-09-21

Before disco was co-opted by the white shirts and hacks out to make a quick buck, REAL dance music was being made like this. Forget BPM's and remixes, MFSB did it all real time. Complex arrangements, swirling strings, punchy horns, vibes, and a KILLER rhythm section propelled the beat AND the melody. Gamble & Huff and their team of writers, arrangers, and singers made it all seem so simple. The swing revival going on now should also include the music of MFSB, which not only swings hard, but teases, cajoles, soothes, and inspires. Just try NOT dancing to this!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz At It's Best.......2006-12-14

I recently picked up Smooth Urban Grooves by Soul Providers and if you're a fan of Smooth Jazz then this is a CD for you. The hip-hop tracks Encore, Through The Wire, Hate It Or Love It and 21 Questions are very smooth and have a Chicago steppin feel to it. However I'm a slow jam type of guy and the slow jam jazz covers on here Let Me Love You, We Belong Together, Lovers & Friends and Diary all stand out. The Usher/Lil Jon/Ludacris composition titled "Lovers and Friends" retains its soulful ballad ways, while the addition of certain jazz elements delivered from Baldwin's keyboards and the soulful horn charts played to the hilt by Nelson Rangell and Marion Meadows. The same can be said for My Place which becomes a even smoother slow jam when the sax is added to it. If you get a chance pick this one up.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasurable to the ears.......2006-11-16

I would recommend this CD if you are a pop/contemporary jazz type listener. I selected this CD because of the producer [Bob Baldwin] behind the music. Although not quite to the soulful jazz standard of his own compositions, this CD none the less is enjoyable to listen to. Tracks 1, 4 and 8 are particularly note worthy.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't think this is a knockoff.......2006-09-14

I picked this up by chance. I saw that Bob Baldwin was associated with the group and thought that it would be interesting knowing that Baldwin is one of the better jazz artists. That being said, those expecting a jazz interpretation like the Hidden Beach Unwrapped series might be expecting a little too much. They stay true to form on most songs and they don't disappoint. Some tracks I can see as being a jazzy cover of hip hop without straying away too much. Nevertheless, it's a cool cd to play that would entertain and appeal to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars ZACH is NOT a James Taylor Clone!!!.......2004-07-17

My apologies in advance to devout James Taylor fans (which include Clay Aiken), but Zachary's voice and depth of feeling in his music is genuinely his and his alone. I am very choosy about what music I listen to, and after listening to only 30 second snippets on my crappy little computer speakers, I am sold on this young man's gift of voice and aility to communicate said feelings and thoughts to the listener.

I wish him many years of successes!!!

5 out of 5 stars James Taylor type voice.......2004-04-27

Okay, so being a Zach Packer makes me kind of bias. Zach has one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard. He's a James Taylor fan and you can hear it in his soulful voice. Not only is Zach an extremely skilled pianist, but his song writting and singing are AMAZING as well. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Zach.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2004-02-24

Zachary Provost is VERY talented!! His songwriting, voice and piano work just shows it!! If you're into both piano and singing, this is for you!! It's lively, moving and wonderful! Words just can't explain it enough - it's just awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars This music is ALIVE.......2003-05-21

Zachary Provost's music encompasses a wide range of styles, yet he manages to keep his music firmly focused toward the intelligent listening audience. As a vocalist, his range and stylistic interpretation of his own material and other contributing artists is excellent. His arrangements enhance each song perfectly. Here is a combination of cool jazz, progressive jazz-fusion and soft ballads that delivers an extremely interesting buffet of musical delights. Whether you like Top 40, jazz or Adult Contemporary, you will find something on this CD that will whet your appetite. Each song is tasteful, exciting, a little unusual, unexpected, and ALWAYS good. This is a refreshing effort by an artist that has an outstanding background as a degreed, working musician and music director for a major recording talent. Zachary Provost is a musician and recording artist that shines in this first effort. He will be around for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Authentic.......2003-03-31

Zachary Provost has a groove that's unmmistakeably connected to his soul. He shares his innermost musical expressions with a technical competence that draws in a listener and illuminates his range of styles. His songs are sometimes intense, sometimes playful and he takes risks to provide a diversity and depth to his music that make the cd such a rare and wonderful treasure. His openmindedness and tenderness is raw and unvarnished.

Zachary's rendition of "Inch By Inch" is rhythmically innovative and gives a soulful interpretation of the song's message and heart. Other tracks including "The Music of My Heart" only grow to be more endearing with time.

This cd really is heartfelt; it's music to celebrate being "Alive". I look forward to hearing so much more from this artist as he becomes even more in demand as he undoubtedly will become.

"Downtempo and chill are definitely highly placed among the current grooves of choice for international spinmeisters. Rarely have the sounds of both been so well epitomized as on this premier release from Lax Recordings. This compilation of original tunes favors the after-party after-glow with perfectly placed elements of soul, ambient electronic vibes, spacious funk and deep dubby house. Transporting you from the floor onto the couch in one easy move, both the selection of material and quality of production bodes very well for this fledgling Los Angeles-based label. Plus, it serves as a useful tool for the post-party recovery program." - Chrissie Wilson - GrooveRadio.com

4 out of 5 stars Even better live.......2007-01-10

Peter Mulvey is a fine live performer. His shows are worth a see. His music is very intellegent, witty and tuneful pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Mulvey is incredible!!.......2005-11-04

Peter Mulvey is the greatest musician no one has ever heard of and "Kitchen Radio" is his greatest release. . . so far. I say that because up until "KR" I thought the same of the "Trouble With Poets" album. That is what's so great about Peter, his albums are so chuck-full of both lyrical imagery and musical savvy that your sure that "this is the one".

If you love the simplicity of singer-songwriter folk-rock tunes along with artistic spark that fuels incredible lyric imagery, than Peter is your man and there is no better place to start than "Kitchen Radio".

5 out of 5 stars Smooth like a fine wine.......2005-10-29

This album is reflective, moody, fun, and even poetic. All this done at the same time. How many artists can you say this about? I've been a fan since Rain (1993) came out. He has only gotten better with age. If you like your songs to scream at you, wrong artist. But if you like imagery, lyrics that mean something, and room for personal interpretation, this is your guy. If you get the chance to see him live, do so. Absolutely phenomenal!

4 out of 5 stars Great album from Mulvey..........2004-09-20

I saw him perform most of these new songs with a full band behind him twice now. They sounded great and then even better once I bought the album. Looking forward to him playing them by himself when he comes to Lowell, MA in Nov. Peter Mulvey really knows how to set poetry to music. Definitely influenced by Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello along with some Ani DiFranco and Leo Kottke. "Road to Mallow", "Shirt", and "Denver 6am" have great guitar hooks and even better lyrics that paint very vivid pictures of nighttime drives and desolate airports. Have listened to parts of this album at least once a day since buying it. Check out "Redbird" w/ him, Kris Delmhorst, and Jeffery Focoult.

    5 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-05-03

At first listen I was disappointed- after hearing the songs live, the other instruments on the cd took something away for me. He really fills the space in a room all by himself.

But I gave the cd a few more chances, now I can't take it out of my cd player. I would tell you what my favorite song is, but that changes every time another song comes on. This cd is amazing front to back and I can't imagine anyone not liking it.
