Christian Rock Made Cool.......2007-07-15

This San Diego based band have kept the style of modern rock alive with this 2004 release that first got noticed by the strength of the Top 20 hit, "Meant to Live." Switchfoot have recorded your basic 101, feel good album by having great songs, infectious pop hooks, and introspective lyrics. As songwriters, they have a flair for radio melody while not afraid to challenge the human psyche in "Dare You to Move," one of the best songs to hit the charts in ages. They're also not afraid to speak their minds to the collective consiousness in "Ammunition." Other tracks worth mentioning include "This is Your Life," and the memorable and inspirational, "More Than Fine."

Switchfoot has grown in leaps and bounds with every release since their debut, The Legend of Chin, in 1997. This album marks their coming-out as mainstream artists, and it was successful for many reasons. First, all 4 musicians are talented and passionate. Second, they present a hope and a positive message in a world saturated by superficial or negative messages. Third, this album shows off the band's diversity and humour. Here is a brief track-by-track analysis of The Beautiful Letdown.

Meant to Live - Possibly my favourite guitar riff of the past 5 years starts this one off. This song rocks!
This is Your Life - Love the synth opening on this one, and the sort of ethereal (am I using this word correctly?) feel to the entire song. Not rock, not really even pop, but man, what a song!
More Than Fine - This song seemed destined to be a radio favourite, but never was released. I love listening to this one in my car... it just has a certain quality to it that demands the listener to examine life around them.
Ammunition - I used to think this one was about how Christians are like ammunition, poised to attack "the enemy" or whatever. But I now know we are the ammunition, we are the weapon that is being used against our own cause - love in Jesus Christ. WE are the ones turning people off from Him!
Dare You to Move - This one also finds itself on Learning to Breathe, the previous release, but sounds a lot better on this one, and fits the album thematically. Despite it being a "do-over", I still consider it the best song on this album!
Redemption - Sad that this one was left off their set list at their concerts, because it's an awesome song, musically and lyrically. Love the guitar-and-drum opening, and the sweet bass line!
The Beautiful Letdown - My least favourite track on the CD, though the message is awesome. We are bound to be let down by this life, because we weren't created for life on earth! We're heaven-bound, and we'll never be let down there!
Gone - Quirkiest song on the CD. This is something they have kind of strayed from in recent years (at least on their actual releases). This one is just fun from start to finish!
On Fire - Beautiful ballad. So raw, so passionate. Love it!
Adding to the Noise - Definitely a sign-of-the-times song about how we tend to busy ourselves with so much stuff that life passes us by.
24 - Amazing end to an amazing album. This one is so introspective... love the line, "I am the second man now."

If you do not have this CD, you seriously do not know what you're missing out on! It is definitely still to this day one of my favourite albums by any artist!

We love this cd so much! If you want to hear the best of Switchfoot, buy this cd! I've liked some of what I heard of Switchfoot in the past, but all the songs on this soundtrack are great! The lyrics also send out a wakeup call to those Christians who are just living to get by and fit into the crowd by asking them if they are who they're meant to be. For Christians they are to meant to live to glorify God first and foremost in all that they do and I think that this is brought out in this cd.

With over 15 acclaimed films to his credit, actor Jared Leto knew he had a challenge in creating a legitimate musical group, and the fact that a great many gifted thespians have pumped out some pretty awful albums hasn't slowed him at all. "Any time you have a precedent that's negative like that, you're gonna have an uphill battle," he agrees. "I've never shied away from that." Yet 30 Seconds To Mars' self-titled 2002 debut easily established the group as a fresh, new force, revealing a multi-faceted outfit that thrived on creative exploration and escape.

Three years later, their follow-up, A Beautiful Lie, catapulted the group to even greater success. Where the debut's line-up featured Jared on all guitar, bass, synth and vocals with brother Shannon on drums, a full collaboration developed with A Beautiful Lie, including guitarist Tomo Milicevic and bassist Matt Wachter. "The last thing we wanted to do was make the same record twice," Leto explains. Hundreds of tour dates and a 1996 MTV Nomination for "Best Video" later, 30 Seconds To Mars are proving their stability and still challenging their position. I LOVE 30 Seconds to Mars. Jared Leto finds a way to reinvent himself with each release, and it is so refreshing to hear something that doesn't sound like everything else on the radio. I highly recommend this CD.

A Beautiful Lie - Beautifully Enhanced.......2007-04-12

I highly recommend this to any 30STM fan, even those who already have the album - A Beautiful Lie. The enhanced DVD enables the fan to take a closer look at the making of 'The Kill' video, plus a full version of the video... and other interviews. The enhanced CD is not to be missed !

An amazing and unexpected treasure.......2007-03-22

We are fairly fickle about our CD collection and the quality the bands must maintain. Having said that, some bands are not purchases out-of-the-gate, or on release day. For a few, like this 30 Seconds to Mars CD, they have to glean our interest from radio and video releases first.

And wow, have they done that. Once FROM YESTERDAY came out, we knew we had to own the CD. But it was soon apparent that was only the beginning. If you are worried that the constant yelling vocals of Jared Leto may indicate an album that is "less than," DON'T BE! From start to finish this CD has no deletable tracks - a feature that gets quite a bit of use in our household (we can clear CD tracks from the player that we do not want it to play).

Don't waver any more if you are questioning the addition of this CD to your collection. The radio and video hits are only a hint of what is being offered, and we look forward to the next 30 Seconds to Mars release.

I cannot really equate them to any other band, which is the most difficult part of assessing the quality of the 30 Seconds tracks. That alone should be an indicator of why this CD is a must-own.

Saw a video from this album last month on LOGO tv and really liked it. It was a Valentine's Day gift for 2007 and I liked all of the songs equally which is rather rare on many albums these days. If you like gothic/metal music then this might be for you.

Got hooked on Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers at their Rocky Point concert 5/2007. Their music is awesome! Got this CD and Americano!

Peacemakers with a twist...of lime.......2007-06-29

Americano is the most significant album, start to finish, that Roger has ever written. This is not Americano but harkens to a beautiful mix of Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy and the classic Peacemaker chords. The Peacemakers are not the Refreshments: they're better.

Buy it. You'll question the direction on the first pass and love it on the second.

The Peacemakers are making the most significant, organic contribution to new rock music in America today. If you doubt it, go see a concert: anywhere. You will be amazed

Not Giving Up Yet...but I Continue to Hope for Better.......2007-06-22

I'll admit that I am perhaps a little too attached to Honky Tonk Union, but I have really struggled to embrace the direction that Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers are going. Clyne continues to have strong chops, and the musicianship remains top notch. The song-writing, at least to my ears, has been on a bit of a decline over the last couple of albums. No More Beautiful World has a moment or two that reminds me why I became a fan, but I can't justify listening to an album front to back for a moment or two. It's understandable that bands need to evolve, but until that evolution equals or surpasses their origins, I wish RCPM could do a little more channeling or their early work.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!

to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".

Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12

This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.

It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.

There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.

Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

It is not the best CD that I have bought but it is an honest one. The orchestration is good, the choice of tunes is excellent and the tunes are well played. As you know, it is always difficult to say : I like it or I hate it because hearing a CD is a question of personal point of view. In my case, I may not say that I like it or I hate it, I prefer some other orchestration but it us a good CD.

I'm a classical music/opera person for the most part. But I find this CD entralling. Even the organization of the CD is ideal-almost like a symphony--with the rousing Candide Overture and the musical medleys at the beginning, the patriotic songs as the B section, and the Dixieland and other music from American musicals to finish up. And I particularly like the orchestration of the medleys. A wonderful CD.

Another great tune!.......2007-06-19

As resplendent as I think she is and as much as I'm in awe of her talent, I think Beyoncé is becoming slightly overexposed. Her sheer ubiquity is getting a bit tedious, quite frankly and I often find myself feeling that if she would just go away for a while I'd appreciate her all the more upon her return. Shakira, I've never heard of before now and judging her solely on her voice, I don't believe I've missed anything. Together in the video, the two of them look like a pair of... well, let's just say I was totally unimpressed. I was left thinking no wonder my sister won't let her young daughters (aged 5 and 11) watch MTV.

But none of that can take away from the sheer power of this song. I'm not a huge r&b fan (anymore) but this one is something really special. I can just imagine it doing big things in clubs and at parties world-wide. I can see it crossing culture and language barriers with total ease. I always give credit where I think it's due and I believe Stargate, alongside Ms Knowles, Shakira and Eduardo Cabra, did a great job producing the tune.

I also love the Maurice Joshua Remix of "Irreplaceable". It's a totally funky house mix and reminds me of my wild and carefree clubbing days in NYC, way back when. Glorious stuff.

After scoring one of the most infectious chart hits of the '90s with their debut's "Walkin' in the Sun," San Jose's Smash Mouth further refined their retrograde cocktail of ska/surf/rock/pop influences via the follow-up hit "All Star" and a raft of mainstream soundtrack appearances that virtually guaranteed them a critical backlash. But on this, their first album on their own Beautiful Bomb label, SM apologize for none it. If anything, they've further burnished their pop sheen, expanding the back-to-the-future philosophy that's the cornerstone of their sound a bit in the bargain. Penned by frontman Steve Harwell, the single "The Story of My Life" injects some Rock of the '80s jitters into the mix, while the band variously evokes Merseybeat innocence on "Girl Like You" and suffuses "So Insane" with some greasy, melodic funk. If the B-52s echoes of "Getaway Car" underscore SM's penchant for sometimes pushing their pop-cloning gambit too far, songs like the bouncy title track and the bittersweet ballad "Right Side, Wrong Bed" argue that they're content to forge inviting, party-ready rock confections-- a feat they've accomplished again here with typically insouciant charm. --Jerry McCulley

Smash Mouth's true comeback. Don't hit the beach without it........2007-05-14

A more honest title for Smash Mouth's first album in their return to unsigned status may be "Hey, Major Labels, if You're Going to Pigeonhole Us, Do It Right". Because a title like "Summer Girl" just gives the impression Greg Camp continued to ride the hollow sunny vibe that washed out their 2003 release "Get the Picture?" into obscurity and eventually oblivion with another set of cranked-out too-calm-to-be-rock-but-too-peppy-for-ambiance numbers. This is not the case, because Smash Mouth knows that there's more to being a "summer band" than making a soundtrack for sunbathing. There's barbecues, campfires, partying, and--this can not be overstated enough--macking on potential summer flings.

So that's the M.O. for Greg, Steve, Paul and newcomer Jason Sutter this time out (although former drummer Michael Urbano leaves his fingerprints on some of the beats and production work here). While any lesser band would backpedal and try to regain some rock-group-cred by pretending Astro Lounge and its successors never happened. Smash Mouth, however, are well aware they already betrayed the hipsters beyond apology, and instead simply pick up where their fans' expectations for that album left off: a varied--but positively rockin'--collection of songs that sound good anywhere... but reach their full potential behind a pair of cool-looking shades between May and August with a cool drink in one hand and the sunblock in the other. So rarely does a band recognize where they are and, concurrently, where they've been. Even rarer is a band that can fit it all into one coherent sound. This album's got the grit of Fush Yu Mang, the variety and songcraft of Astro Lounge, the poppy charm of their self-titled and the feel-good summer vibe of Picture--the main difference is now it's got substance courtesy of the previous three elements. Take the title track, with its lazy-beach-days organ riff, but when the hook comes in with all its self-assuredly charming naiveté, you realize you can stop holding your breath; Smash Mouth's found their footing once again. Quality Control--the surprising but essential middle finger to Clear Channel--feels like a walk through the dilapidated Astro Lounge with the quasi-creepy space-rock that ran wild on that album and remained an undercurrent. And then there's Right Side, Wrong Bed, the first acoustic tune since I Just Wanna See that doesn't feel obligatory (despite its being the only one here).

What's the most surprising is how well Smash Mouth--formerly a common example of the kind of band that gets funding as a result of the laziness and greed of record execs with their frequent soundtrack contributions and by-the-numbers covers--make the transition to a full-fledged indie band, selling this record off of their own "Beautiful Bomb" label. In fact, the only element of this process they don't have down yet is the timing; they couldn't possibly have meant to release this sunny record in September. But it's an easily forgivable offense, mainly just because it's a big relief to have Smash Mouth back doing what they do best: pop that's so much fun it seems other bands are afraid to make it.

Some time ago Smash Mouth was about to publish "Old habits" where they said they would return to their original rock style, but in the end Summer Girl appeared and I see that this spirit died. However I love this album and specially "Girl like you" and "The crawl" but with the original sound it would be better.
