Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars "Here We Go Again........" .......2005-12-15

As Archie Bell & The Drells once sang! Another quality Philly soul lp that didn't make the (national attention) squad at time of "try-outs". Nevertheless, with "Look At All The Lonely People" leading the way, another quality album a music company in a foreign land has had the insight and wherewithal to get on disc, now availible to all, that no U.S. music company has, prior to now. Know the former Temptation in the group? For sweet soul/soul collectors familiar with the known, many excellent "not well known" reissue lps finally arriving to market. Treat yourselves, it's buy time!

5 out of 5 stars Another great Stevie classic!.......2007-07-25

This is another fantastic peace that needs to be released domestically on compact disc. And what make it so bad is, is that this was a motown release back in 71. I tell you, these record labels need to get on the ball and start making a lot of this stuff available for the fans to purchase on cd. Stevie laid it down on this recording. Fortunately, i was able to come across the album sometime ago, but it would be even better to hear it on compact disc.

5 out of 5 stars Only for true "Stevie-alogist".......2005-12-14

This is all from memory and if the lyrics are wrong forgive me!
(Its been over 30 years since I last heard it)

This is a true lost "Holy Grail grade" treasure from 1971, and one of the most compelling reasons to allow music sharing and swapping.

Anyone that has ever heard this album knows that Stevie Wonder is blind only optically and in reality see more then 99.99% of the sighted.

This album is some of Stevies most insightful and deepest thoughts on life he's ever done (even deeper then secret lives of plants)

with lyrics like....

"Ride a thorny mule that crys" and

"We are charmed by living
Dazzled into giving
Looking for world we've yet to explore
Blinded by the virtues
Measured by the untruths
Love is used for something but what for?"

I believe that if it were published new today in 2005 it would be considered the music that takes a life time of experience to write yet he did it in 1971 while in his 20's!

If you think you've heard everything Stevie has to offer "YOU HAVEN'T"!!!

Just find this album (only on vinyl or eight-track)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for home and classroom.......1999-03-21

No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

5 out of 5 stars A straight up masterpiece........2007-05-06

I can't understand how in the heck Motown never released this Stevie Wonder classic on cd. Not only should it been released, but it should be remastered as well. These songs were very socially conscious. It was a great prelude to his other follow up albums of the 70's.

3 out of 5 stars A Warmup to Future Classics.......2006-11-04

On 1971's WHERE I'M COMING FROM, The then 21-year-old Wonder man finally produced an entire album by himself and co-wrote all nine songs with his then-wife Syreeta Wright. Future Grammy-winning Wonder trademarks are on display here like funky electronic workouts("Do Yourself A Favor"), lovey-dovey ballads ("Think of Me As Your Soldier", "Something Out Of The Blue", "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer"), and somewhat preachy message songs ("Look Around" and "Sunshine In Their Eyes"). "Take Up A Course In Happiness" is a positive song done in an "Up With People" type of gleeness, while "I Wanna Talk To You" (with that irritating high-pitch voice) attacked generation and racial gaps two years before he recorded his masterwork "Livin' For The City". The top-ten hit single "If You Really Love Me" has its charms by featuring Syreeta on backing vocals and a snappy horn arrangement that would make Chicago proud. Not a perfect album, but essential to hear the early development of a future legend.

4 out of 5 stars WAIT A MINUTE!!.......2006-03-11

The old man on "I Wanna Talk to You" wasn't Nipsey Russell!? I am shocked! I am appalled! I am SHOPALLED!!!

Anyway, I love this old album. Paid a grip to get it imported, but it was worth every penny. "Talk to You" is a clunker, like "Sweet Little Thing" on MomM, but everything else is great. Way too short!

5 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of Stevie Wonder.......2005-06-26

Stevie Wonder's 1971 release, Where I'm Coming From signaled a change in his musical styling. The album is filled with socially conscious themes, but catchy melodies that would be the hallmark of his 70's work. The blueprint for the album was Mr. Wonder's 1970 top ten single, "Heaven Help Us". The album opens with the psychedelic tinged "Look Around" based around a spooky clavinet and thumping bass. "Do Yourself A Favor" is a message song in the Curtis Mayfield style that preaches education over violence set up with gospel feel and a funky beat. "Think Of Me As Your Soldier" has a jazzy riff with a sublime guitar and "Something Out Of The Blue" is a lovely ballad with lush strings. "If You Really Love Me" is the album's lone hit single, peaking at number eight in the autumn of 1971. It kicks off with punchy horns and a roaring vocal that is backed up by Mr. Wonder's then wife Syreeta Wright. It is a true R&B gem. "I Wanna Talk To You" is the weakest song on the album, a weird song about picking up girls with Mr. Wonder suppling a bizarre vocal in an old man's voice. "Take Up A Course In Happiness" is a bouncy, upbeat number that has a definite sunny, trippy early 70's feel. "Never Dream You'd Leave In Summer" is a gorgeous track framed by heartbreaking strings and woodwinds that provide a canvas for Mr. Wonder's aching and longing vocals. The album closes with "Sunshine In Their Eyes" which closes out the album on a promise of hope. Where I'm Coming From was not a commercial success, only hitting number 62 on the album charts, but it showed tremendous growth and was a harbinger of greatness to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Masterpiece.......2005-01-06

In the 70's Stevie released an unprecedented series of masterpieces. This is the beginning of Stevie's creative control on his music and the start of his incredible run. Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, Songs in the Key of Life are all well-known for the masterpieces that they are by both fans and critics, yet Where I'm Coming From seems to be lost in the shuffle.

Where I'm Coming From, starts surprisingly different than the others, with the haunting "Look Around". It's clear to see Wonder wanted to set the creative tone and conscious lyrics early on. "Do Yourself a Favor" is a funky social commentary that repeatedly tells us "educate your mind". "Think of Me as Your Soldier" & "Something Out of the Blue" are both musically dense ballads. The first is one of his best ballads and the second is pretty deep lyrically with his metaphors.
"If You Really Love Me" is an excellent song, as it somehow handles both being a ballad and fast paced song back and forth. "I Wanna Talk to You" is really the only song I could do without, really only because of the voice repeating the title annoyingly (but then again that's probably the point of the song). "Take Up..." is a feel-good track, that is good enough to somehow avoid sounding cheesy.
"Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer" is a forgotten classic and perhaps my favorite song of all time... for any artist. Wonder's music and his metaphorical lyrics are so emotional the song is literally heartbreaking. "Sunshine in Their Eyes" was Stevie's first attempt at two part songs, and here the second half "Everything is Happening" is the best conclusion to any of his albums (excluding Talking Book with "I Believe").

After done listening to it for the first time two things came to mind: there's no way that was only 37 min long, and I simply cannot believe that I've never heard anyone talk about this album. I never thought this album was going to be as good as the rest, but thankfully I was wrong. As with the rest of his series, Where I'm Coming From is stunning musically and lyrically. As with the entire Stevie Wonder masterpiece series, it really just depends on your opinion which of his albums is the best (and just like the others this could be to some the best). But if you neglect this one you're ignoring another spectacular piece of music. While all of Wonder's other masterpieces have been re-released and remastered, for some reason this one remains only available as an import. But, don't let that deter you from getting this album it's worth the Import price, so don't waste your time waiting for the re-release. Please don't let another masterpiece to his collection slip away like it has for so long.
