The collaboration between Patti Labelle and Diane Warren might not be as splendiferous as that of Dionne Warwick and Bacharach and David, but it is one that makes sense. Labelle is an emotional singer with an üaut;ber-dramatic approach. Warren, whose pop/soul songs ("Unbreak My Heart, "Because You Loved Me") have been hits for nearly every major female singer (including Labelle), can at her best infuse her material with a girlfriend empowerment that's equally theatrical. Why are there sooo many instrumental pieces?.......2005-11-22

Perhaps because they are composed by the great film composer Zbigniew Preisner who is credited with works such as the Three Colors Trilogy, Damage, The Double Life of Veronique, and The Decalogue. Admittedly, a film such as When a Man Loves a Woman can't equate artistically with these European Arthouse pics, or their music, it does boast the same excellent composer.

Good, but not what you're probably expecting..........2003-11-23

A lot of people went out and bought this cd after watching the movie, but probably not because of Percy Sledge. Unfortunately, that's about all you get. The orchestral pieces are great background music, but are strangely prioritized for the soundtrack in the place of Michael Stipe and Rickie Lee Jones. For everyone going crazy trying to find out what songs are missing from the soundtrack, I hope this helps:

Shivers and chills.......2001-07-01

When I first heard the opening bars of "When A Man Loves A Woman" the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I got cold chills. This is simply the greatest love song in R&B/Soul ever. And when you put "Take Time to Know Her" together with it, even the feminists can listen happy. The years have not changed the great Percy and he is at his peak on this CD. Get it.

Not Patti's best work..........2007-07-23

I must say that even as a devoted Patti LaBelle fan, I was disappointed with this album. There was a lot of hype and good promotion surrounding it prior to its release but upon listening to it the first few times, it didn't connect with me.

The album just doesn't have any kick! It starts off with a fun intro ("The Kitchen") which is a telephone conversation between Patti and one of her girlfriends talking about Patti's man troubles while Patti proceeds to cook up a storm - a recurring motif throughout the album. This was a great move creatively - very entertaining!

The down side? Too many ballads and because they're all Diane Warren compositions, they start to sound redundant after a while. The title track, which is a beautiful ballad should've been placed somewhere further in the album and not as the first track. The uptempo songs aren't bad (the ones produced by Jam & Lewis anyway). "Too Many Tears, Too Many Times" is a throwback to the disco days - something that Donna Summer or Thelma Houston could've recorded albeit not as vocally powerful as Miss Patti herself! "Call Me Gone" is catchy - but Patti's overbearing ad libs towards the end get a bit annoying after repeated listens. Perhaps that's why as the first single, radio didn't pick it up.

The club banger "Time Will" sounds out of place on this album. Produced by Hex Hector, it sounds like a remix that would've been better on a CD Maxi-Single. Further to that, the tracks that follow are all ballads including Patti's weak remake of Taylor Dayne's "Love Will Lead You Back". This was a #1 hit for Dayne and Patti should've left it alone, particularly since she didn't bother to change any of the vocal arrangements. It sounds like a simple rip-off of Dayne's hit.

I much prefer Patti's follow-up "Timeless Journey" and "When A Woman's..." predecessor, "Flame" albums. These are much better releases with more creative material and a good balance of uptempo cuts, soulful ballads and quiet storm jams. "When A Woman Loves" was quickly forgotten after its release and that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

As one of the premier songstresses of her - and any other - generation, Patti Labelle does not shy from telling her age and, on this disc, her longevity serves her well. The singer, as usual, pours herself powerfully and intimately into every track. She sings as one that has lived a life filled with successful or failed relationships and she bears her all in this most satisfying collection of mostly mid-tempo ballads.

The best of the lot include the title track, "Make Tonight Beautiful," "If I Was a River," "Why Do We Hurt Each Other," "Call Me Gone," and a cover of "Love Will Lead You Back."

The album loses a star due to the two forgettable fast tracks ("Too Many Tears, Too Many Times" and "Time Will"), obviously added to satisfy the dance club crowd.

This is a well crafted album of songs. The promotion for this album was unclear because this is meant for people for enjoy Patti's A/C & Quiet Storm side not her Urban contemporary side. Some people didn't get the memo. This is a great choice for anyone who likes romantic, sensual, intimate and passionate Adult Pop/Adult Contemporary. If it was promotioned to the right demographic, it would have been more successful with higher charting singles. There only two Urban songs here "Tell Me Where It Hurts" & "Call Me Gone." Her vocals are just right to suit the songs. My favourite songs on this album are the hits "When a Woman Loves", "Time Will", "Call Me Gone" & "Too Many Tears, Too Many Times." As well as album cuts like "Make Tonight Beautiful", "Tell Me Where It Hurts", "If I Was A River" & "I'll Still Love You More." Kuddos to Diane Warren for the songwriting! Recommended to any Adult Contemporary/Pop fan.

Not her best! Too much Diane Warren overkill!.......2004-07-06

I don't like this album like the other Patti's albums. The ballads don't match well with her voice. And while she admires Diane Warren, Diane's songwriting here would make fodder for 500 Hallmark card commercials. The sappiness goes into complete overload here. I liked "Call Me Gone," but the rest of the album never matches up to that upbeat song. This is the only Patti album that I don't like as much--the ballads kind of drag here; there's no kind of passion in the songs. But her latest, Timeless Journey, is far, far better than this.

Re-listening to OZ from Oz.......2004-01-28

I've been relistening to the original original cast recording of this show. I'm really starting to enjoy it and find it quite entertaining. It has its own wonderful quality and well worth listening to over and over again.
It definitely would NOT have worked on Broadway with these arrangements because it retains too much the quality of a lounge act; not nearly 'big' enough for Broadway. BUT the performances are really terrific and the period arrangements are true to form.
I wish PRETTY KEEN TEEN, SURE THING BABY and TAUGHT BY EXPERTS had been kept in the Broadway production

The Boy From Oz had its world opening at HER MAJESTY'S THEATRE Sydney in 1998. As a theatre lover and seen over 70 shows, this musical stands out as #1 around Australia and soon to hit and rule the world.
The music is outstanding.
The cast is the best.
The show PHENOMINAL!!!!

The songs lift your spirits beyond belief. They just make you feel you are up there on that stage with the cast. You would understand why the songs are on this cd and the order they are in as they happen in the show if you saw it first, but trust me you can listen to the cd before you see the show.
The cast featured on this cd are Australias best!

ANGELA TOOHEY (Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar) plays LIZA MINNELLI. A very scary fantastic roll. You would think you were watching Liza on stage she has the role down so well.
Robyn Arthur (Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables, Cats, Cosi) plays several roles.
Murray Bartlett (4th season of Sex and the City, Australian tv & theatre shows)plays Greg Connell. Peter Allen's partner.

The stage, the music, the fun and the life of Australias and the worlds most out there and amazing enterainer comes to life in this musical and cd. When it comes to a stage near you, you have to buy tickets. And if your anything like the millions of Aussies that have seen it you will see it again and again. With the likes of the Phantoms, Les Mis etc.. around and gracing our stages after 20 or so years, i know THE BOY FROM OZ will still be around gracing our stages and our childrens stages for many many many years.

Well, I saw this play while in Syndey in '98, and loved it then, and the more i listen to the soundtrack, the more i love it. It is amazing, and it totally recaps the feel of the play. I honestly love you, and Tenterfeild Saddler are two of the most amazing songs ever writen, and they are even more wonderful on this fabulous album! All praise Peter Allen

Almost Great.......1999-06-09

The problem with this CD is that it contains only a fraction of the music in the show itself. Admittedly, it contains the major numbers, but a lot of good stuff from the original show is missing. Since it is the only CD available, I recommend it, but if and when this show gets to the London or New York stage, a CD containing more of the entire work will doubtless become available. The liner notes are sparse. The listener who has not seen the show will not have a clue as to what is going on with the story line. This is a real shame, because understanding the story line brings a special poignancy to many of the songs. If you can wait a year or two for another edition to appear, do so. Otherwise buy it now. If it were complete and had better liner notes, I'd give this one five stars plus. The fellow playing Peter Allen and the gal playing Lisa Minelli are dynamite talents.

BRILLIANT - A GREAT CD.......1999-04-17

I must say I have never seen the show here in Australia but after listening to the recording I will have to go see it. The quality of sound is perfect and the track changes are also perfect. Some of the songs on the CD are so well sung it almost brings a tear to your eye for example TENDERFIELD SADDLER, I HONESTLY LOVE YOU and DON'T CRY OUT LOUD The songs arent sung by one person, lines of lyrics are given to characters. Well worth buying to add to your collection
