Product Description
Typical Cats

Conceived in the lair of Chicago’s legendary WHPK Rap Show, this project is one of those rare hip-hop albums that evokes a feeling of marvel and completeness. Consisting of MCs Qwel, Qwazaar and Denizon Kane (Dennis Kim of I Was Born With Two Tongues) and producer/DJ Natural, the Typical Cats have put together a record of straight up hip-hop with provocative lyricism, original concepts, and the raw energy you would expect from three of the most promising MCs to come forth in recent times. The name Typical Cats is purposely ironic. Each member of the group comes from a radically different perspective giving the album the ability to hit from all angles. Still there is a great feeling of camaraderie throughout, leaving the listener in awe of the work, effort, and sheer talent that went into these recordings. Production was provided almost solely by DJ Natural, with Meaty Ogre stepping in to rock one beat. The full length CD is available from Galapagos4 with a 7 track EP following shortly.

Album Description

It has been four long years since their now-classic debut Typical Cats dropped on Chicago hip hop label Galapagos4. Successful solo projects and worldwide tours have only whetted the appetites of the legions of fans eagerly anticipating the follow up. The time has come, and the Cats have a message. Attention Citizens of Hip Hop (Nation Within a Nation): We have waged a rebel resistance to that cynical enemy of the listeners and true heads—the Establishment—for decades now. Our enemy, fully aware that the people need beats and rhymes to live, has embarked on a campaign of sonic terrorism, flooding minds and airwaves with pollutants while grudgingly distributing real hip hop in tainted and dwindling doses. In order to combat this toxic status quo and restructure the underground network that is the last hope for our rebel tribes, we have dispatched our most highly skilled team of operatives under the code name Typical Cats. Representatives Qwel, Qwazaar, denizen kane and DJ Natural (along with special delegate Kid Knish) have spent the four years since the last restructuring effort in the field and have now been authorized to administer an emergency plan effective immediately to:

1) Eradicate the underground of the Establishment's clone minions

2) Create an infrastructure with which to bring our Movement above ground

3) Bring an end to the chaos of the warring tribes and effectively bring the

disputed territories under rebel control

The science of this nation-building initiative is to be distributed in a disc form entitled Civil Service. The disc will contain explicit and coded information technology capable both of disabling Establishment operatives and activating rebel representatives and stations in one precise deployment. Civil Service is a series of ongoing tasks of utmost importance to the survival and eventual victory of our nation within a nation. In a time of heightened crisis such as this, it is a form of struggle through self-government, a collective orchestration of success as we define it, and our response to the Establishment's shadow war on its own people.

Citizens: Our existence has become conflict itself, and our Enemy interprets our independence as hostility. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our independence is simply an expression of humanity in a bleak and alien environment. We are fulfilling the broken promises of the Establishment. We are the architects of our future, the makers of sound. The Most loves not the boastful. Civil Service for the hopeful.

Peace, the Service.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could be..........2005-10-29

TC has a lot of talent and lyrical capability together and on individual levels. BUT, they still haven't matured enough to put a great album together. The beats are nice, but not very inventive or experimental, and certainly not up to their lyrical level. They need to work with better producers (ex. Cage w/ Def Jux, RJD2, DJ Shadow= great album; while Cage w/ Easter Conf. All-Stars= typical boring thug $h!t).

Some reviewers have commented about rhyming off beat. I think what they're hearing is TC spitting verse out as fast as they possibly can over beats. They need to be more patient and match their flows with the rhythms, especially Qwel. Qwazar shows the most control (check out is Outerlimtz album for a more mature Qwa).

I admire they're underground spirit in Chicago, a city that barely supports hip-hop to begin with. They would benefit a lot from a collab with fellow hoppers outside of Chi-town and to spend some time forming their story telling capabilities, and realize that the more you battle rhyme- the more obvious you think you still have something to prove. Living in Chicago I wish we had a more mature underground scene like NYC and the northwest, or even Atlanta. But TC reminds me that we still have a way to go.

2 out of 5 stars Sophomore Attempt.......2005-09-20

My title suggests what was better... Common Sense's Sophomore CD, Resurrection, is one of the classic hip-hop albums. This one, unfortunately isn't.

My earlier review on the original Cats album was full of great enthusiasm. This CD is marked with mediocre beats overlayed harshly with at times tired attempts at memorable hooks. The CD represents maturity.. all the band members have matured. But not in the way you would want. Qwel, once the battle rap and punchline king, has now mellowed out and is soft spoken. Denizen is completely obssessed with slurring the most complex words he can. Usually Qwaazar would do that, but now Qwaazar is left with trying to bust memorable hooks and cheap boom bap type of raps.

In the end the quality of the CD stands for itself. A loud and abrasive ECHO. The quality of the CD is a step up from the previous, it has a more studio mainstream feel. But through the feedback and beat all I hear is an ECHO.

I hope they don't got out like this.

2 Stars for lots respect.

5 out of 5 stars Beats, Rymes and Flows.......2005-09-17

Their first album was an instant classic. Qwell, Quasar, Denizen Kane and DJ Natural have done it again. Anyone who hears this album knows it. The beats, rymes and flows are dope. The Typical Cats came with new s*#@ no one can mess with. Just listen to one of their new songs and you'll know what I talking about.

5 out of 5 stars True Hip-Hop.......2005-09-05

Typical Cats are the perfect example of what hip-hop should be.
As good as their first CD was, this one easily matches it. All three MCs deliver sick lyrics, i wasnt really feelin some of these beats a whole lot though. all in all this is an ill CD, definately recomend to any true hip-hop fan.

3 out of 5 stars Alright probally not one of the 50 best of 2005.......2005-08-23

These dudes are really strong rappers but the beats are pretty bad and boring. They got some bad beats with some bad quality in the volume. The Lyrics are nice and the guys who specialize in freestyling are good and they have nice Flows. This album will get a 3.5 out of 5 by me because of there borderline great lyrics but the structuring-beats-and replay are mere average at best. Next time they will hook up with some dope beats.

Album Description

A prolific MC that has the sheer talent to combine innovation, philosophy, and that necessary bit of arrogance? Hip-hop has never seen the likes of QWEL, and it will not be the same hereafter. Add the music of MEATY OGRE and the chaos of DJ WHITE LIGHTNING, and you have a truly ground-breaking album. As a member of TYPICAL CATS, Qwel was able to introduce to the world his amazing skill, and with this solo release on GALAPAGOS4, his newborn legacy continues. IF IT AIN'T BEEN IN A PAWN SHOP, THEN IT CAN'T PLAY THE BLUES is a window into Qwel's soul, and if you're not careful the glass may shatter.

5 out of 5 stars essential history-making trax.......2003-11-20

In this day of revolutionary turns in music, to miss this artist is tantamount to missing John the Baptist, one crying loudly in the wildest of wildernesses--the evolving hip-hop scene. If speaking truth with beauty is valued, if knocking the status quo off balance is sought then you will find reward in qwel. Pure is the quality of originality found in his lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Chi Town's Best.......2003-01-24

Qwel's rhymes are some of the best out there not only because he flows so well, but because of the content in his words which often make you think. From the evils of abortion, to religion, to a love song, this album has it all. The beats are great too, as they complement his flows immaculately. Robust gives great verses on $...AD and Art of War. Look for his album as well. This buy is definitely worth it and also check out his new album(Rubber Duckie Experiment), the Typical Cats cd, Qwazaar's Walk through Walls, anything from Galapagos 4, and definitely Atmosphere's Overcast and Lucy Ford. Go to hiphopinfinity.com to see what's up in real hip hop. If you like Missy Elliot and Nelly, don't buy this because you obviously don't know good hip hop. Sit back, chill and listen to this all the way through, then again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Dope album, full of substance, better than you think 4.5.......2002-04-27

The beats are diverse, but in a good way. Lots of scratching and one song even fades in and out which helps stress the lyrics. The songs have meaning to them, like Art of War which is about how different countries fight over religion. The song $19.99AD is the best on the album, its about the evils of abortion. This guy is from the group Typical Cats and as far as I know the most gifted in the group. If you like artists like Sage Francis, Slug/Atmosphere, Sole(anticon), and Illogic pick up this album ASAP.

Album Description

As a member of both the spoken word group I Was Born With Two Tongues and the underground hip-hop group Typical Cats, Dennis Kim (aka Denizen Kane) has proven his versatility as a poet, a lyricist & an MC. On "Tree City Legends", his first solo album, he shows his talents as a musician & songwriter, spanning everything from straight up hip-hop to experimental instrumentation & vocals. Beats are provided by DJ Natural (Typical Cats), KP the Illustrado (The Pacifics) & Anacron (The Netherworlds). Additional production was handled by Denizen Kane & DJ White Lightning. One of the jewels of the record is the inclusion of the first new Typical Cats group track to be released in over a year and a half. "Calling Card" is a raw, fierce track that showcases the 3 MCs, Qwel, Qwazaar & Denizen ripping the mic to shreds over banging DJ Natural production. Also featured are the singing talents of Tina on the heavyhearted "Drown (Bless The Dead)". "Tree City Legends" is an introspective expression of Denizen's life experiences in Chicago, New York & Oakland. This 8 track EP is just a taste of his artistic vision. Look for more from Denizen Kane on upcoming Typical Cats projects as well as his appearance on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on HBO.

5 out of 5 stars For people who love real hip-hop or music in general.......2005-10-04

I have nothing bad to say about this CD. Every track has so much to offer from the music to the lyrics. Each beat has a nice mix of jazz, blues, and classical music combined with hip-hop beats that bring it all together. On every track the lyrics are so fluid and meaningful there's no way you can't feel this music. I personally love this CD and Typical Cats. If you love music, poetry, hip-hop, and art this CD is for you

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hip Hop Record of the new Millenium.......2005-03-05

I've heard many hip-hop artists but as of now, none can match up to the sheer lyricsism (is that even a word?) of these cats. From Chicago, the capital of blues and new hip hop, these cats rip on every song on this record. With jazz bebop riffs under insane punchlines, these cats ushered a classic album which will be hard to beat.
