I basically got this because of DeeDee doing vocals on some songs... those songs are great, and i like thats theres some solos in some of the songs. but a lot of the songs sound like filler to me. Danger Zone is amazing and so is Wart Hog. and if youre looking for a book about the ramones i highly recomend reading Labotomy: Surviving the Ramones written by DeeDee, its a pretty good read.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny's Favorite.......2007-01-20

Ramones fans know that Johnny Ramone much preferred the fast, heavier punk songs (like Wart Hog) to the more pop-sounding tunes Joey gravitated toward. The Ramones' best is probably somewhere in between the two, but Too Tough to Die has more of Johnny's influence (he co-wrote four songs, a lot for him)than most Ramones albums. This one has a lot of hits and is definitely one of their "tougher" albums.

5 out of 5 stars TOUGHER THAN EVER!!!!!.......2006-01-16

Perhaps the fact that the newest member of THE RAMONES at the time, RICHIE RAMONE was a crazy, uppaced drummer, or perhaps it was the fact that DEE DEE RAMONE had a slew of inspired compositions to put out, but 1984's TOO TOUGH TO DIE is nothing short of a punk rock/hard rock masterpiece.
RICHIE RAMONE replaced MARKY RAMONE and added a whole new intensity and speed to the groups sound. In fact, it was sort of a problem for the band in the mid eighties, because the speed of the drumming was knocking twenty minutes or so off of their live set time. However the sound was pisser. I really like blaring this album in the car- It rocks like a bomb! TOMMY RAMONE, the original drummer, produced this one, and really proved his skills behind the boards, as this is probably the best production job ever done on a RAMONES record. Full sound, everything is mixed perfectly. There is a touch of electronica on songs like CHASING THE NIGHT and HOWLING AT THE MOON, but they don't hurt the integrity at all. Those songs still rock, but the angrier, grittier tracks are what makes this album shine, MAMAS BOY, the title track, DURANGO 95... damn they're all good. DEE DEE sings on ENDLESS VACATION, and also on alternate versions of most of his songs, that are included on the umpteen bonus tracks included on this release. Well worth a peek.

5 out of 5 stars Their last Great, Great Album.......2005-08-17

After a string of disappointing albums (End of the Century, Pleasant Dreams and Subterranean Jungle)THE RAMONES decided it was time to come back with a vengeance. The rising hardcore movement and the relative success of thrash giants like METALLICA and ANTHRAX made the scene more bearable for RAMONES unique and revolutionary brand of punk rock. The production is top notch; full, with loud guitars and even louder drums and the song themselves, while mostly up tempo, remained with that classic knack for melody. With this album, THE RAMONES wanted to show us that they were very much aware of all the trends and bands they have helped spawned, most noticeably the hardcore bands, many of them who were beginning to dismiss them as aging punks. Proof are tracks like "Danger Zone", "Too Tough To Die", the insane "Wart Hog" and the decidedly hardcore punk rant of "Endless Vacation". More melodious numbers were also unbeatable masterpieces, like "Chasing The Night", "Howling At The Moon" and "Daytime Dilema". Any of these more melodic songs could've been a HUGE hit and why this never happened will remain one of hard rocks saddest mysteries.
This was my first RAMONES album and it has a special place in my heart. From this album on, I heard their entire catalog and became a loyal fan. They made me get into punk and consequently, hardcore punk. A truly memorable collection of songs by the TRUE fathers of punk. Be not mistaken! If you consider yourself a punk rocker, you'd be commiting a crime by not owning "TOO TOUGH TO DIE".

5 out of 5 stars Five star maturity.......2004-09-23

"The solution to peace isn't clear,
the terrorist threat is a modern fear."

No, that's not from a new 2004 song...that was Dee Dee Ramone writing "Planet Earth 1988." As he made abundantly clear on "Jungle," he was becoming the Ramones' new secret weapon, either penning or co-writing nine tracks on "Too Tough To Die." If the heaviness of "Mama's Boy" or the obvious band statement of the title track didn't get you, then nothing could. Even the obvious bids for radio acceptance, "Howling At The Moon" and "Chasing The Night," were as good as anything from the brilliant "Rocket to Russia."

Producers Tommy (Ramone) Erdelyi and Ed Stasium probably had a better understanding of a Ramones sound than anyone outside the band, so they fit "Too Tough To Die" like naturals. Johnny's guitar is prominent, new drummer Richie Ramone gave the band a much needed power shot in the arm. Joey hadn't sounded this committed vocally since "End Of The Century." Listen to the way he attacks "Mama's Boy" and the bonus remake of "Street Fighting Man." Even Dee Dee's vocals on his drug addled "Wart Hog" and "Endless vacation" added an air of fresh vitality to the band.

The Ramones may have been fractious for the previous three albums, but during the sessions for "Subterranean Jungle," Dee Dee and Johnny overcame their differences and became friends again. While that didn't save "Jungle," it sure did jazz up "Too Tough To Die." The most vital of their 80's output, this caught the band at their 10th anniversary and tackling mature issues. "Too Tough To Die" was the Ramones re-staking their place in the Rock and Roll hierarchy at the time when U2 and the Clash were making commercial inroads and social statements. It remains the last truly classic Ramones album, every bit as essential as those first four albums and proof that punk rock could grow up.

4 out of 5 stars Critics are Too Tough, Angie still smooth operator.......2007-05-10

There are some great tunes on her as I re discover her catalog. I have a wide variety of taste in music and though I truly love her jazzy moments, her commercial efforts are just as good! Too Tough combines the past jazz influences with pop, I Can See It In Your Eyes & Rainbow Inside My Heart to pure pop remake Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing duet with Boz Scaggs. Her ballads were becoming her strong point with songs like her hit Tonight I Give In and the gorgeous Accept Me (I'm Not A Girl Anymore). The title track is the only dance track though Love You Too Much reminds me of her previous hit Something About You.

I first discovered Angie's music in 1979 with her second LP, Angel Of The Night and the single What I Wouldn't Do. It was not a big hit for her, but I really liked her voice and style. I have since seen her every time she's come to Boston. Sadly she had a stroke in Jan 2006 and is recovering. I hope to see her again someday!

When this CD came out in 1983, it was clearly a departure from her fist two GRP/Arista Jazz LP's. It followed her first commercial set in 1981 Something About You. Most of that LP was all over the radio here. Too Tough was a big dance club hit for Angie and totally different for her.
Clive Davis who likes to make hits for Divas and gave up on label mate Melissa Manchester after her biggest pop hit You Should Hear How She Talks About You (which won a Grammy in 1982). Unfortunately Angie never made that status, but her works have been welcomed with mixed reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Ballads.......2006-03-25

Angela Bofill is one of those artists who can make any ballad sound authentic and pure. You can hear the emotion in her voice as he sings in songs like "Song For A Rainy Day", " I can See It In Your Eyes", "Accept Me" and of course "Tonight I Give In". Twenty two years after it's release many of the tracks on "Too Tough" sound just a fresh as they were in 1983. With any RB/Jazz album from the 80's you will come across some dated dance tracks, but even those are good for nostalgia sake. I recommend you get your hands on this album one way or another. You won't regret it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Too Tough.......2006-01-02

This is the album that started my Angela Bofill collection & after all of these years, it's still one of my favorites to listen to. Angela has one of the most distinctly unique voices in music EVER - she's one of those vocalists who if you'd only hear 2-3 notes of a song, you'd know it's her!

Side A was produced by a great musician in his own right, Narada Michael Walden while Angela wrote/co-wrote & produced Side B. I'm still hanging onto my album version (bought for $5.99) and get to listen to it sparingly since I don't own a turntable anymore. I'm like the other fans of this disc, just hoping that if Arista doesn't re-release it then Hip-O Select will SOON!!!

What more can be said about perfection? This is a great album to have in not only your Angela Bofill collection but your music collection in general. It's hard to pick favorites since there is not a bad song on the entire album but my favorite tracks are: SONG FOR A RAINY DAY, ACCEPT ME AS I AM, TONIGHT I GIVE IN, TOO TOUGH & I CAN SEE IT IN YOUR EYES.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to it (and everything else) on vinyl!!!.......2005-10-03

I chanced upon an excellent used vinyl copy of "Too Tough" last week and when I put on "Tonight I Give In," suddenly I'm back in 1st grade again, singing it and thinking I had lungs like Angela! You can't get any better than LP's... especially for jazz and R&B releases.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-06-28

My personal favorite Bofill album. It is incredible to hear her unbelievable voice in the context of R&B songs. Side A gives you the R&B and Pop tracks. The best part of the album is Side B where she writes and produces all the songs and smooths out the vibe. Angela is a rare talent sent directly from Heaven

This album is a song for song cover of the Ramones album of the same title. The songs are played in a straightforward, no frills punk style. It's decent enough, but one has to wonder why the album was recorded in the first place. They can't top the Ramones original versions of these songs (nor do they attempt to). It might have been more interesting if they had done something different with the songs, but they chose to follow the basic punk formula. Not a bad album, but not a terribly interesting one, either.

    4 out of 5 stars contemporary bluesman.......2004-01-01

Studebaker John is an interesting, entertaining musician. He writes, sing, and plays (harmonica and slide guitar) original songs, but with a style that is obviously influenced by the Chicago blues. When friends want an introduction to contemporary blues, I have them listen to Too Tough; it has never disappointed. I recommend checking out Too Tough over the later releases because I think the overall consistency of songs is higher on this album.

    3 out of 5 stars Good R&B blues.......2000-02-17

This was the first major release for Studebaker John on Blind Pig. You will do better to check out his subsequent releases.

This is a reasonable good album if you like good old R&B blues. The highlights of the offering are when he plays both harp and guitar. The best tracks are 'Someboby forgot to tell my heart' and 'Boogie walk'. He offers a clean uncomplicated style and seems to suffer from under-exposure. His subsequent albums provide many more highlights.

5 out of 5 stars Another 5 Star CD From The Italian HC Masters..........2003-11-10

...And it doesn't disappoint!Released in '92, this is 16 tracks of HC/Metal crossover, far superior to other bands claiming to be the same(Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, DRI, for instance). Songs like Jane and Joe, Run For Cover, Let Me Die, 82-92, and You're Dead are great songs and are pretty much the standard for the whole cd. The only song I might say is (comparitively)weak is the cover of Thin Lizzy's Holy War, and I only say that 'cause the pace of the song is much slower than the rest of 'em, and I find it kinda interrups the flow of the album, but really, the whole thing is aces, so if you can find a copy, than get it, 'cause it's not the easiest cd to find(I got lucky one day and found it along with Mine To Kill in a used shop for $10(Can.)each. Best $20 I spent in a while). One of the last albums that Mauro (vocals) sung in his classic Screams From The Gutter voice. Fans who've heard their later releases(Reptile House, Trust Me, Still Screaming (After 20 Years), will know what I'm talking about. Happy hunting, but it's worth it!

As he made abundantly clear on "Jungle," he was becoming the Ramones' new secret weapon, either penning or co-writing nine tracks on "Too Tough To Die." If the heaviness of "Mama's Boy" or the obvious band statement of the title track didn't get you, then nothing could.
