Product Description
No one snake-hipped his way up the pop charts with more panache than New Orleans R&B legend Lee Dorsey on 'Ride Your Pony'. Ride Your Pony, Dorsey's first Amy album, is sweetened by 11 rare bonus tracks called from the absolute master tapes, and remains the distilled essence of the New Orleans sound. The funk is ratcheted up a notch on Dorsey's second Amy album, The New Lee Dorsey. 12 bonus tracks empty the Amy vaults as Dorsey, backed here on many tracks by Crescent City icons the Meters, proves that he was indeed the Big Easy. A Sundazed release.

2 out of 5 stars Lee Dorsey: Not the best way to present a New Orleans giant.......2006-09-04

UK label Charly has been issuing marginal compilations by some pretty important artists since the LP era, and this 'new' Dorsey set is a CD edition of a brief hits collection issued on vinyl back in '86. Charly's sound is rarely more than serviceable (not having access to original master tapes by American artists is one problem). At the moment, and who knows how long the moment might last, we are lucky to have several superb sets available by one of the most underrated r&b stars of his era (an era that began with Ace in 1957 - Dorsey was already 30, a WWII vet, lightweight boxer and body-and-fender man extraordinaire - and ended with an ABC album in 1978, though he continued to perform, including an opening slot on an early '80s Clash tour). First, three fabulous albums representing Lee's long and fruitful collaboration with producer/writer Allen Toussaint: around the time the label re-issued the complete Meters catalog, Sundazed reissued Dorsey's classic work for the Amy/Sansu labels (spanning 1965 - 70) on two generous sets. "Ride Your Pony" (originally 1966) has been expanded to twice its original length, so in addition to classics like the title track and "Get Out Of My Life Woman" there are plenty of rare singles first issued during 1966 - 68, (including a pair of gems Lee cut with Betty Harris)all mastered from original sources by Bob Irwin, and the elegantly packaged collection, like its companion piece, includes annotation by Bill Dahl. The label's second set and Lee's second Amy album, "The New Lee Dorsey" features the truly eccentric, and funky, national hits "Working In The Coal Mine" and "Holy Cow." These two discs collect a total of 47 tracks from a very productive five year period, and the dozen bonus tracks on "The New..." cover 1966 - 70, thus include several examples of Dorsey backed by the Meters (such as the 1969 classic "Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky (From Now On)". The range of material proves Dorsey's talent: wry, converstional, generous, streetwise, vulnerable, and self-deprecating, it's no wonder Toussaint worked with him more than any other artist. Lee, despite a love for Ray Charles, was less gospel influenced than most soul/r&b singers of his generation; he was certainly always ready with an apt ad-lib, especially during a song's fade. By 1970 Toussaint was producing Dorsey at Polydor, and if you can find Polygram's 1993 edition of "Yes We Can Can...and Then Some" (sadly o.p. and badly in need of a domestic reissue) is a classic, with Dorsey expanding his range to include more socially concious lyric, as befits the era, and an exquisitely unique New Orleans brand of funk/soul now fully matured. The original and best versions of the title track, "Sneakin Sally Through The Alley," "Riverboat" and other classics are here, but the 20-cut cd also includes several non album singles from 1970 - 73, such as On Your Way Down" (later covered by Little Feat), as well as unissued tracks from the same era and a pair of gems dating back to a brief stint with Smash in 1963 (with Dorsey backed by the AFO All Stars). In 2005, Austrailia's Raven issued the "Yes We Can Can" album, but minus all the extras except for two songs from post-album singles; instead they've included Dorsey's sole album for ABC, "Night People", which finds the singer's warmth intact amidst a very different seting - this was the disco era, and Lee adapts wonderfully on well arranged and smartly written material that is solid for about two thirds of its eight tracks. Depite Dorsey's wonderful voice and Toussaint's settings, the album is brief and somewhat uneven - I'm glad to have it, but it is definitely the bonus item here. Right now this imported two-fer is the least expensive way to acquire the 1970 Polydor classic, however one might miss eleven great tracks that are currently out of print.
I hope interested New Orleans/funk/soul fans, and fans of great American originals, skip the Charly comp and check out a generous portion of the great Lee Dorsey's finest work while it is still available!

5 out of 5 stars Classic New Orleans funk from Lee Dorsey, 1970.......2005-10-22

New Orleans has always produced more than its share of truly singular music greats, many eccentric enough that they never hit outside of the region. But Lee Dorsey produced a considerable body of work, including several several national hits. Twenty years after his death Dorsey remains a vastly underrated vocalist - by turns soulful, wry, converstional, playful, and bemused. By the time he made his first record ("Rock") for Ace in 1957 he was already 30 years old, and the following year began a longstanding collaboration with producer/writer Allen Toussaint ('Lottie Mo'). It wasn't until 1961 that he hit big on the Fire/Fury label with 'Ya-Ya', followed by 'Do-Re-Me' and several other singles eventually collected in '62 on an album called "Ya Ya". In 1965 Toussaint signed him to his Sansu Enterprises and for the next five years Dorsey hit his stride with a string of classic singles and two great albums, "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey", both beautifully remastered and expanded by Sundazed for CD in 2000. Toussaint produced Dorsey's classic album for Polygram, "Yes We Can" in 1970. It was first reissued on CD in the mid '90s, on a generous set that included bonus singles and outtakes from the 1970 - 73 Polydor period, plus a pair of rare gems recorded for the Smash label in 1963. The original album is essential, combining great songs, a mature delivery, and funk backing by the Meters and other N.O. greats. Now Austrailia's Raven has reissued the album again, this time combined with Dorsey/Toussaint's last collaboration, "Night People" (ABC, 1977). Though I miss the earlier edition's bonus material, and "Night People" is a bit uneven, if you can't find the earlier edition of "Yes We Can" I recommend this two-fer (along with the two lovingly produced Sundazed CDs, which together collect 47 tracks, nearly every one a joy). Raven includes two of the great non album Polydor singles, and their new remaster is decent. The set is occasionally lyrically more socially concious in a subtle way, and there are Toussaint's delicious arrangements. With delicious chicken-scratch guitar against a rhythmic acoustic, and the driest drum-kit sound imagineable, this is simmering funk, featuring many great songs later made famous by others - 'Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley'(Robert Palmer), the devestating 'On Your Way Down' (Little Feat) and the hit version of the title track by the Pointer Sisters. I'd still like to see a "Deluxe Edition" issued in the States collecting all Polygram material and other available tracks. As for 1978's "Night People", it has several gems, and Dorsey sings as warmly as Al Green on cuts like 'Say You Will'. Not surprisingly what would be Dorsey's last album gets a slicker production (as befits the era) and one or two banal songs. It really is the bonus item on this set rather than the main reason to get it, though I am happy to finally own it. "Night People" even got Dorsey a spot on a Clash tour circa 1980. For now, however, Raven's CD is the most cost-effective way to get the classic "Yes We Can" and that album IS essential. The man deserves a posthumous spot in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame - anyone up for a petition?

New Orleans native Lee Dorsey spent most of his life working as an auto mechanic--"the best body man in the 9th Ward"--but managed, off and on through the '60s, to knock off some of the greatest R&B performances ever put on record. Dorsey's success came through singles--from 1961's "Ya Ya" to 1966's "Working in the Coal Mine" to "Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky" in 1969--which feature the swaying New Orleans style (made famous by Fats Domino) and Dorsey's silky smooth vocals. Wheelin' and Dealin' includes all the hits, as well as a number of misses, available for the first time on CD. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Some Of The 60s Happiest Hits.......2007-07-27

In addition to being a mechanic, Irving Lee Dorsey - born on Christmas Eve in 1924 in New Orleans - also did a bit of boxing and served a stint with the Marines before launching his singing career with the small Fury label in 1961. When he was almost 37 years old!

Ya Ya was quite a debut, climbing to # 1 R&B and # 7 Hot 100 that November. Early in 1962 the follow-up Do-Re-Mi made it to # 22 R&B/# 27 Hot 100. But after that the hits dried up, and when Fury folded Dorsey moved over to the Amy label where he came under the guidance of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Schorn. The combination worked as Dorsey, now 41, saw Ride Your Pony reach # 7 R&B and # 28 Hot 100 in August 1965.

Early the next year Get Out Of My Life, Woman peaked at # 5 R&B and # 44 Hot 100, followed by his second most successful single, Working In The Coal Mine which topped out at # 5 R&B/# 8 Hot 100 in September. Three months later the comical Holy Cow b/w Operation Heartache went to # 10 R&B and # 23 Hot 100.

In May 1967 My Old Car just made the Hot 100, settling in at # 97, followed that November by Go-Go Girl (# 31 R&B/# 62 Hot 100). Then the well dried up for over a year before he found another hit, the title of which perhaps indicated a new musical direction - Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky (From Now On) - which levelled off at # 33 R&B and # 95 Hot 100 in July 1969.

In 1970 Dorsey switched to Polydor where, in 1970, he cut a concept LP entitled Yes We Can, which was also, like his hits with Amy, produced by Toussaint. From that album Yes We Can - Part 1 made it to # 46 on the R&B singles charts in November. That cut is not included in this cmpilation, nor is his final charter which came eight years later in 1978. Now 54, and with ABC, Dorsey's Night People struggled to the # 93 spot on the R&B charts.

A lifetime smoker, Dorsey died of emphysema one month before his 66th birthday on December 1, 1986.

None of his songs will ever fit into the "classic" category. But you know, it's hard to find a Sixties retrospective compilation without at least ONE Dorsey hit included. This CD will give you just about all of them.

3 out of 5 stars I have not heard this CD, but . . ........2002-12-12

I have not heard the Lee Dorsey album WHEELIN' AND DEALIN': THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION. But, reading the song titles, how can a "definitive" Lee Dorsey CD exclude his original versions of "Yes We Can" and "Sneaking Sally Through The Alley," which, years later, were hits for the Pointer Sisters and Robert Palmer, respectively?

5 out of 5 stars Human music from the early 60's........2002-04-23

Lee Dorsey's music has something that immediately attracts and appeals. It may be his smooth delivery, the groove, the bluesy New Orleans R&B melodies, the great piano and horn section, the human feeling... Whatever it is - I loved Lee Dorsey when I first heard him on LP 12 years ago, and I love it now, listening and dancing to his songs with my little daughter.
This is a great compilation, great song selection and remastering. The tunes that catch on quickly are "Ya-ya", "Do-Re Mi", "Ride Your Pony", "work", and "Working in the Coal mine". After a few more times, the rest of the songs catch up with these.
This is fun music, groovy and happy. For some reason I wanr my daughter to grow up listening to this stuff rather than what she might hear on MTV.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to make you feel good!.......1999-05-11

I've been hummin' this song for years. Never forget the late great Lee Dorsey, along with his follow up hit, "Ride The Pony". He's surely in "soul heaven" with his other fellow late greats : Curtis Mayfield, Jr. Walker, Marvin Gaye, Rick James, Edwin Starr, Marv Johnson, O.C.Smith, Jackie Wilson, Johnny Bristol, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus Thomas, Lou Rawls, Arthur Conley, Hank Ballard, Barry White, Wilson Pickett, Luther Vandross, Billy Preston, McFadden & Whitehead !!

3 out of 5 stars Buy the Sundazed Reissues Instead.......2005-01-11

Collectables, especially earlier in the cd era when this compilation was issued, is known for re-issuing great music and sub-par packaging and sound. This is a compilation of Lee Dorsey's Sansu/Amy label recordings (covering the 1965-70 period) from 1990. In 2001 Sundazed issued Dorsey's two Amy albums, each with original cover art, copious bonus material including numerous rare singles, and excellent annotation by Bill Dahl. The remastering is superb, rendering this item pointless. Spend the extra money and buy the superb "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" - you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Memories from Before AND During the Beatles Reign.......2004-12-16

Lee Dorsey never reminded me of anybody but Ernie K-Doe ("Mother in Law") and they both worked with multi-talented music producer Allen Toussaint. I know all of Lee Dorsey's songs and this is representative of his best work. If you don't know his songs but were around when they were played on the radio, you'll recognize a lot more than one or two of them when you play this. I recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars SOME GREAT R&B HERE!.......2004-02-14

All of Lee Dorseys big hits are here (Workin in a Coal Mine, Ya Ya, Ride Your Pony, etc.) plus plenty of others I dont remember from years ago but which make for fine, finger snappin' today. I especially liked discovering Holy Cow, Hoodlum Joe and Get Out of my Life, Woman.

Plenty to choose from here: 25 tracks on one CD. If you enjoy singers like Ray Charles, Joe Cocker or Lloyd Price you'll probably like Lee Dorseys songs and styling from the 70's.

    Album Description

4 out of 5 stars The New Orlean Groovemaster's reissue rates a big four stars.......2001-01-17

If you're a fan of the New Orleans groove, The Meters, Allen Toussaint, funk, soul R&B or just plain old good music, this CD is for you. Re-issue house, Sundazed Music from Coxsachie, NY has done it again. This mid-60's (1966 to be exact) release shows Lee Dorsey to be in fine voice. The New Lee Dorsey is chock full of bonus tracks and the non-stop funk n' party roll that is New Orleans music.

The New Lee Dorsey opens up with "Working In A Coalmine" (no, its not a Devo song; they just covered it) and doesn't let up. As with Ride Your Pony (the other Sundazed re-issue), the bonus tracks are all gems. Don't miss "Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky (from No On)" and "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself a Letter."

If you have never heard of Lee Dorsey, this CD is a great representation of his mid-60's sound. If you're a longtime fan, this album is finally available on CD. If you're just a passing fan, give The New Lee Dorsey a chance. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Dorsey: A New Orleans Classic.......2007-07-23

With a voice like a wonderfully wry, warm, generous smile, Lee Dorsey's music remains as knowing, sly, open-hearted, and idiosyncratic as one could hope given that he was one of New Orleans' most successful national hitmakers. Certainly the laid back rhythm of the city is evident in a vocal persona that betrayed fewer gospel mannerisms than any other 'soul' singer of his generation (Dorsey was born December 24, 1926). Indeed, Lee was joyous and wary, restrained and intimate. You almost felt like this most conversational of stylists was singing to you straight from his body-and-fender shop. Debuting in 1957 on Ace ('Rock'), Dorsey's early singles gained attention on his home turf, but it wasn't until he Bobby Robinson signed Dorsey to his Fury label in 1961 that he hit big nationally, with the surreal 'Ya Ya' and 'Do-Re-Me'. 1963 saw Lee recording with the A.F.O. All Stars for Smash, and Constellation released a pair of singles the following year. These coincided with Allen Toussaint's two years' military service.
By the time "Yes We Can" was released by Polydor in 1970, Dorsey and Toussaint had been collaborating for so long that a classic album was almost inevitable. Toussaint first worked with Dorsey as pianist on the singer's 1958 single 'Lottie Mo' (Valiant Records). During the especially prolific 1965 - 70 period the pair scored several national hits ('Working In The Coal Mine', 'Ride Your Pony', 'Holy Cow', etc) on the Amy label. All of the Amy material has been collected on two terrific CDs issued by Sundazed, "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey". Both titles were originally Amy LPs, and in 2000 they were greatly expanded for a combined total of 47 tracks, nearly every one a gem. Toussaint always used the very best New Orleans musicians available (and his own piano playing is always a pleasure), and by 1967 or '68 that included The Meters, whose infectious, syncopated rhythms are evident throughout the later Amy material, and throughout "Yes We Can", the most mature and unified Dorsey album. Sadly, "Yes We Can" was not a hit in 1970, though over the next few years several of its songs did climb the charts when covered by the likes of Ringo Starr, Robert Palmer, and The Pointer Sisters. Thus, there was no follow-up album, though Polydor did issue a few more singles into 1973.
As of this writing, the only version of "Yes We Can" in print is the Australian Raven label's 2005 transfer. Raven adds two of those non-album singles (1972's 'When Can I Come Home' and 1973's masterpiece 'On Your Way Down') along with Dorsey's next, and last album, "Night People" (1978, originally on ABC). The set is, obviously, essential, but if you've heard Polygram Chronicles'1993 CD edition you know it's also somewhat disappointing, for the Polygram set collects seven terrific outtakes and non-album singles, and throws in two superb 1963 sides recorded for Smash, so if you only have the Raven edition you're missing such gems as Dorsey's take on Ray Charles' 'Lonely Avenue' and the deeply funky single 'If She Won't (Find Someone Who Will)'. This is one album that demands the expanded edition treatment, and in its country of origin. Just play 'Occapella,' 'Riverboat', or 'On Your Way Down' and I bet you will agree it is truly one of the greatest soul/funk albums to emerge from New Orleans - ever. Now let's get this one back in print!

5 out of 5 stars Dorsey Rides the Rhythm.......2006-04-10

Lee Dorsey remains one of New Orleans' most inimitable stylists and underrated hitmakers. Unlike so many of the soul and r & b legends of his generation (he was born December 4, 1926), there is little shout in his style, and any gospel influences come filtered through Ray Charles. Dorsey was already 30 years old when he debuted on Johnny Vincent's Ace label with "Rock" in 1957. The next year, Allen Toussaint would play piano on "Lottie Mo" (first issued on Valiant) beginning a collaboration that would continue through most of Dorsey's career: rarely have singer and producer been so aptly matched. In 1961 "Ya Ya" (on Bobby Robinson's Fury label) became Dorsey's first national smash hit, and it was followed by several more sides and an album for the same label. In 1963 Smash released a superb single by Dorsey backed by the A.F.O. All-Stars, who also backed up the vocalist on a pair of singles on Chicago's Constellation label.
After two years in the military, Toussaint was back in New Orleans early in 1965. With Marshall Sehorn he created the Sansu label, affiliated with Amy/Bell Records, and the Sansu/Amy/Bell imprints would issue Dorsey and Toussaint's recordings through early 1970. "Ride Your Pony" was their first hit on the new label and the title track to the first of two superb Lee Dorsey albums released during this period. Sundazed has reissued both "Pony" and the followup, "The New Lee Dorsey" (1966) in greatly expanded editions, so that the two CDs - together gathering 47 tracks - now make available all of Dorsey's singles, and a few unissued gems as well, from 1965-70.
"Ride Your Pony" covers material from 1965 - 68, generally a bit earlier than the "New" set, which takes us from 1966 - 70. But the fact that Sundazed does not stick to a purely chronological approach only enhances the enjoyability and variety of both sets.
Dorsey's vocal persona is generally wry, warm, distinctive, and almost conversational. From the chicken scratch guitars and dance beat of "Pony" (a response of sorts to Jr. Walker's "Shotgun"), to the lazy rhythm and bemused tone of "Work Work Work" (with Dorsey characteristically improvising during the fade, "anybody got a cigarette?") the infectious funk and understated optimism of Dorsey's work is always a pleasure, and gets better the more you play it. His work is like a regular visit from an old friend, always welcome. Throughout this set and its companion CD Toussaint adds splendid piano, marvelous horn arrangements, and superb rhythm tracks from the cream of New Orleans' session pool, including Roy Montrell, June Gardner, Deacon John, and - starting around 1967 - The Meters. Other bonuses on "Pony" include both sides of a terrific Dorsey/Betty Harris duet from '67, the "Tighten Up"-inspired two-part "Four Corners," and much more. Dorsey could convey heartache when given the chance, and Toussaint's production formula is remarkably flexible. As usual with Sundazed reissues, the remastering is superb throughout, as are the graphics and Bill Dahl's liner notes. "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" are both highly recommended collections, and if you still want more check out Relic's "Ya Ya" for the early '60s material on Fury or the classic Polydor set "Yes We Can Can" (1970, issued in the US by Chronicles over a decade ago, and last year by Australia's Raven)

5 out of 5 stars Lee Dorsey : The REAL DEAL ! (that's right BABY!).......2000-06-19

The Funk, the groove, the voice, the band, the head scratchin production, the songs, the New Orleans thing, oh yes my friends, this LP has it all. And did I mention TWELVE bOnUs tracks! And they're all the BOMB! Is that the funky sound of The Meters backing up Lee on this LP, oh yes, I'm afraid so. And what about the the "rip-off factor", oh yes sir, I do believe that producer/writer Allen Toussant was working overtime, trying to make old Lee sound like the hitmakers of the day (and let me remind you that the "day" in question was the soul-tacular year of 1966!)everybody from Brother Ray Charles (on Can You Hear Me) to Junior Walker (Ride Your Pony). but make no mistake, it mostly a full time non stop funky booty shake 1960's New Orleans get down party! The organ on the end of "My Old Car", the drums on "Four Corners", the duet with Betty Harris (on "Love Lots Of Lovin")or the ode to a stripper ("Go Go Girl") are EACH worth the price of this fine LP. If you're simply curious, hungry for the Southern Soul Stew, or a long time Lee Dorsey fan, hesitate no more, this is the real thing. Amen!
