Most mid-'60s pop and R&B albums are like Hamburger Helper: a little meat and a lot of filler. But Smokey Robinson and the Miracles gratifyingly confound that notion on the first half of this two-album collection. Not surprisingly, it's also the first album to give vocalist-writer-producer Robinson star billing in his veteran band. Cut in the midst of producing chores for the Temptations and Marvin Gaye (Robinson was also a Motown label VP), Going to a Go-Go was something of a minor tour de force for Robinson, who cowrote all but one of the album's songs. Although its name refers to a partying dance craze (the origins of the infectious hit title track), it's an album largely centered around bittersweet, emotionally charged hits like "Tracks of My Tears" and "Ooo Baby Baby," as well as unusually strong cuts like "My Girl Has Gone" and "A Fork in the Road." By contrast, the second half here often sounds haphazard and less focused, as could be expected from a quickly produced sequel to a massive hit. Still, Robinson's glorious tenor illuminates even such standard fare as "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." Previously unreleased bonus tracks include the stereo mix of "It's Fantastic," a fellow Away We Go-Go outtake of the lounge standard "Goin' Out of My Head," and a glorious, impassioned 1966 live rendition of "A Fork in the Road." --Jerry McCulley

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars the MIRACLES....NOT IN THE ROCK HALL OF FAME ? ...OUTRAGEOUS !!.......2006-07-29

Let's see here...the Supremes are in...the Temptations are in...the Four Tops..the Jackson Five ...even Martha and the Vandellas are in , but the MIRACLES...MOTOWN'S FIRST GROUP... THE GROUP WHO'S HITS BUILT THE LABEL... THE GROUP THAT LAUNCHED A RECORDING EMPIRE...THE GROUP WHO'S SONGS HAVE BEEN RECORDED BY ARTIST AFTER ARTIST FROM THE BEATLES ,TO THE STONES ,TO ARETHA FRANKLIN,TO EDDIE MONEY, TO LINDA RONSTADT,TO KIM CARNES,TO JOHNNY RIVERS, THE CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE AND A HOST OF OTHERS... THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT GROUP IN THE COMPANY'S HISTORY...THE ONE THAT HAD THE LABEL'S FIRST MILLION-SELLER...THE GROUP WITH OVER 50 CHART HITS...DOESN'T MERIT INDUCTION INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ? While at the SAME TIME , groups with NOWHERE NEAR the number of hits...NOWHERE NEAR AS INFLUENTIAL... AND NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD continue to be inducted year after year ??!!... WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE ?? WHAT'S WRONG ? I'LL TELL YOU WHAT'S WRONG... THE CAPTION RIGHT NEXT TO THIS PICTURE !! IT SAYS "GOING TO A GO GO/AWAY WE GO GO"...BY SMOKEY ROBINSON !!! NOT BY THE MIRACLES... NOT EVEN BY SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE MIRACLES... BUT BY JUST "SMOKEY ROBINSON " AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM !!! Throughout the history of this legendary group, the MIRACLES have NEVER ...but NEVER received their rightful due AS A GROUP...it has always been only about SMOKEY !!! but,as any insider will tell you ...AND AS SMOKEY HIMSELF WILL TELL YOU... the MIRACLES HAVE NEVER BEEN JUST A ONE MAN SHOW !! they were ALL talented songwriters, singers , and producers ...ALL OF THEM have had a share in writing their many hits...(if you don't believe it,just read the writing credits on the labels},not to mention the hits of almost EVERY OTHER EARLY ARTIST ON THE MOTOWN LABEL... MARY WELLS, THE TEMPTATIONS, MARVIN GAYE ... YOU NAME IT !! BUT NOT ALL OF THEM SHARE THE CREDIT ... TO THIS DAY, DISC JOCKEYS ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY , AFTER PLAYING OLD MIRACLES RECORDS ...WILL ANNOUNCE " THAT WAS BY SMOKEY ROBINSON ! " LIKE THE MIRACLES DIDN'T... OR NEVER EXISTED....DO THEY DO THIS TO THE SUPREMES..? NO !! they still call them the SUPREMES ! RARELY DO DEE JAYS SAY "DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES" even though MOTOWN ACTUALLY CHANGED THE GROUP'S NAME MANY YEARS AGO!!AND NEVER, BUT EVER ...DO THEY JUSY SAY "DIANA ROSS". the MIRACLES' album "GOING TO A GO GO, WHEN RELEASED IN 1965, OUT CHARTED AND OUT SOLD CONTEMPORARY RELEASES BY THE TEMPTATIONS AND THE SUPREMES... EVENTUALLY REACHNG THE TOP 10 ON THE BILLBOARD POP ALBUM CHART.QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!! AND YES...IT WAS A GROUP ACCOMPLISHMENT !! BESIDES,LOOK AT THE TOPS, TEMPS AND SUPREMES...in the 1960's.. HOW MANY OF THEIR OWN HITS (OR ANYONE ELSES) did THEY WRITE?..BUT THEY'RE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND THE MIRACLES ARE NOT ?? And for those who argue that SMOKEY was the group's only talented songwriter, I say " what about "LOVE MACHINE" ? a MULTI-MILLION SELLING NUMBER 1 POP SMASH...THE BIGGEST HIT THE GROUP EVER HAD..WHERE was SMOKEY when THAT one was written ? (not even in the group any more ).There's no question that SMOKEY is one of the greatest songwriters of ALL TIME!! But to only credit him and completely ignore the rest of the MIRACLES is definitely UNFAIR .THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE SOLO STARS HAVE BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK HALL OF FAME ... WHILE THE GROUPS THEY WERE ASSOCIATED WITH WERE ALSO INDUCTED ...MICHAEL JACKSON WAS INDUCTED AS A SOLO STAR...BUT HIS GROUP, HIS BROTHERS , THE JACKSON FIVE, WERE INDUCTED TOO !! CURTIS MAYFIELD WAS INDUCTED AS A SOLO...BUT HIS GROUP, THE IMPRESSIONS, (INCLUDING ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER JERRY BUTLER ) WERE ALSO INDUCTED ...EACH INDIVDUAL BEATLE - AS WELL AS THE GROUP ITSELF..ARE IN THE HALL... SO , ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME .... DO THE RIGHT THING . YOU'VE INDUCTED SMOKEY AS A SOLO... NOW PLEASE... INDUCT BOBBY ROGERS, WARREN "PETE" MOORE , THE LATE RONNIE WHITE ...CLAUDETTE ROGERS ROBINSON... MARV TARPLIN....BILLY GRIFFIN... AND WILLIAM "SMOKEY" ROBINSON ... AS A GROUP..INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ...IT'S LONG PAST TIME...AND THEY CERTAINLY DO DESERVE IT !!IT'S TIME THE MIRACLES ...THE GROUP...RECIEVE THE CREDIT THEY DESERVE !!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of.......2005-01-27

"Going To A Go-Go" is one of the best albums by this group. Not only did it spit out singles such as "Going To A Go-Go", "Choosey Begger", "The Tracks Of My Tears", "Ohh Baby Baby" and of course the fillers such as "Since You Won My Heart" & "Let Me Have Some". In my opinion, this is the best album by this group. It was a contemporary of the Temptations "Temptations Sing Smokey" & "Temptin' Temptations" in which both lp's spat out quite a few hit singles & B'sides themselves in which Smokey himself produced. Smokey is a genius. Even tho the CD has added tracks, it's just another album by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1966 "Away We Go-Go". But the original "Going to a go go" is the best of all.

Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Still 'Go-Going' near 40 years later.......2004-02-25

For better or worse, when it appeared in the last days of 1965, The Miracles "Going to a Go-Go" LP raised expectations among Motown fans about the quality level we would anticipate from the company's album output from then on. And they succeeded at least as often as they failed. Tellingly, `Going to a Go-Go,' was the first Miracles LP to nudge it's way into the Top Ten album charts.

As it was, it was a mini-greatest hits in itself as it contained every one of their 1965 singles and their flip sides: "Ooo Baby Baby," "The Tracks of my Tears," "My Girl Has Gone," and the title song, along with (respectively) "All That's Good," "A Fork In The Road," "Since You Won My Heart," & "Choosey Beggar." "Beggar" and "Road" (especially) were so good they could have been `A' sides themselves. The LP tracks fit in very fine alongside these already familiar eight, particularly "In Case You Need Love" and "From Head to Toe." The hidden jewel was Frank Wilson's "My Baby Changes Like the Weather," which, from the title alone, echoes some of Smokey's own compositions that spoke directly to how wife Claudette's changeable Gemini personality could send him to clouds or devastate him with just a word or look. All the more reason why Smokey's delivery of the tune is so assured and evergreen even now. Yep, we played this album a lot - still do.

Maybe because the Miracles singles of '66 ("Whole Lot of Shaking..." & "I'm the One You Need") aren't quite as strong as `65s, "Away We A Go-Go" couldn't have been as strong as the preceding album either, and it wasn't. Still, hardcore Miracles fans weren't all disappointed because those singles ARE good, and the album contained great flips sides too: "Oh Be My Love," "Save Me," and "Swept For You Baby" which would eventually ride the B-side of "More Love." And we didn't have long to wait for another five-star Miracles album: "Make It Happen" would show up in August of '67. Investigate that one too after you buy this essential set.

5 out of 5 stars Mucho fun.......2002-10-23

Well, you get six hit records; you get some great B sides--so much part of the Motown legend; you get a rare live side; you get two songs--Baby Baby and Oh Be My Love--later retooled for the Supremes and in their original versions nearly unrecognizable (Motown was forever doing this; for example the Marvelettes' "Only Your Love Can Save Me" became Marvin and Tammi's "This Poor Heart of Mine); and you get the worst of Motown, four awful, terrible covers of dreck such as "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," Berry's achilles heel. He just couldn't stay away from white mush--everytime I hear Diana trying to navigate "Ode to Billy Joe" I end up helplessly laughing. Through it all there is that Motown sound, just irreplaceable. The biggest shock in retrospect was how disjointedly all of this was put together. After opening with four consecutive hits, the C.D. moves into a tune which sounds recorded years before at the bottom of a washtub. It's amazing we accepted this stuff as real albums. The cover from Motown's basically one-man graphics arts department (mainly Curtis McNair) is terrific. Every year he had to come up with covers for albums which mostly weren't albums, just generic titles (the worst being the Miracles "Four in Blue" because Motown had a photo of the group dressed in blue suits--that same release include the Four Tops' "Soul Spin," the Vandellas "Natural Resources," the Marvelettes "In Full Bloom" and the Supremes' "Cream of the Crop," all random collections of tracks masquerading as albums). McNair's covers are quite remarkable given what he had to work with. Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end. They did. The music remains, still glorious.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2002-04-25

it's cool that this Includes quite a few songs.makes me long for the days when Pop Songs were 2-3 Minutes long as to Artists trying to fill every space on Disc.this is also the Classic Case of Genius&Miss.when Smokey&Crew Hit it's some of the Greatest Music Ever when it doesn't it's filler that unless you are a Die-Hard Fan you wouldn't even go near.but the cool thing about this set is that it showcases A ballance of a Very Creative Musical Genius.not many Artists before or since have captured the Simplicity&Depths within there Material as Smokey RObinson.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Must-have Smokey.......2007-05-17

In the early to mid sixties the 45 rpm single held sway. Most families had a big pile of crinkly-sleeved singles and maybe half a dozen albums by their very favourite artists. There was a perception, probably shared by record company bosses, that albums consisted of a recent hit single or two and a lot of filler. I don't know if Berry Gordy shared this view but if so he must have been very disappointed by the consistently high quality of all the tracks coming out on his artists' albums, not least those of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

If you happened to be at Hitsville Studios on 19 May 1965, hearty congratulations. You witnessed one of the most moving moments in sixties music when Smokey sang the sublime Tracks Of My Tears into the mike (check out The Motown Box for the phenomenal full-length mix), one of four dazzling A-sides included on Going To A Go-Go. As four more were B-sides, next best in the pecking order, one would expect the other four to be fairly dispensable. Instead we get the soulful blues of In Case You Need Love, the original and best version of From Head To Toe (as covered by Chris Clark and Elvis Costello), the snappy Frank Wilson production My Baby Changes Like The Weather (the only song not self-produced) and more classic Smokey on Let Me Have Some, these last two featuring classy saxophone solos from one of the legendary, sadly unnamed Funk Brothers. Any of these four could have been A-sides and it seems crazy that beautiful songs like Choosey Beggar and A Fork In The Road (both amazingly also recorded on 19 May) should have been consigned to flipsides.

Tragically, Going To A Go-Go seems to be the earliest full Miracles album to be in catalogue at the time of writing, though they had recorded over half a dozen albums by this time, but is by far the best first choice of their available original albums.

However, this CD contains another treat: the follow-up album Away We A Go-Go in full. Although its title is clearly inspired by the monster dance hit that lent its title to the first album, the scope of this album is far wider, if slightly less brilliant in part.

Although it kicks of with a dance-floor stomper in Whole Lot Of Shakin' In My Heart (in a longer version than the single) and ends with the equally upbeat More, More, More Of Love, it also has two Bacharach-David ballads including I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, probably inspired by Dusty Springfield rather than Tommy Hunt's original, as the album also features You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, virtually her signature tune though its origins were as an Italian ballad by Pino Donaggio. Both of these, along with Walk On By, were recorded by Mickey Gentile in New York on 15 July 1966, another notable Motown date, though there were many. I'm not sure that the other voices on these three tracks are those of the Miracles.

The other A-side on this album is the Holland-Dozier-Holland song (Come Round Here) I'm The One You Need, a complex and beautifully sophisticated arrangement that nonetheless reached the national British Top Twenty, though the vocals were re-recorded for the stereo version of the album as included here (you can find the original mono version on The Ultimate Collection). Save Me, Oh Be My Love and Swept For You Baby were B-sides, all Smokey Robinson originals, leaving seven rarer tracks exclusive to this release, of which one more comes from Smokey's pen, all with his trademark panache and rhyme. Most of the record was recorded during 1966 for the album, but Beauty Is Only Skin Deep was produced by Norman Whitfield only a fortnight after the Temptations' original in April 1964 and presumably held over when theirs was chosen for single release.

These two albums on a single disc arguably represent a more rounded picture and better value for money than some retrospective compilations of the group.

I just noticed that the US version of this coupling (Going to Go-Go / Away We Go-Go) has three bonus tracks, including a live rendition of A Fork In The Road. Damn!

5 out of 5 stars Away We A Go-Go is Great, Too!.......2001-07-12

I don't know about the other earlier reviewer from England, but he ought to have a 2nd listen. Away We A Go-Go is my 2nd favorite Smokey & The Miracles album, of original release. My 3rd all-time favorite Miracles' recording is the non-single, album track only "Can You Love A Poor Boy", written by one Stevie Wonder (!) to boot. "Swept For You Baby" also has A-side quality, and the whole album is very moving; and the covers are top-notch outstanding. They used to do "Walk On By" in their live shows way back when, too. "Save Me" is a greatest hit, sure enough. I love the arrangements, with more strings, but no sacrifice to the soul feel of its predecessor, "Going To A Go-Go", simply my favorite original soul album of all time. I respectfully and most strongly disagree with the Miracles fan from York; I say you cannot go wrong with this purchase. Buy it now, who knows if either of these two Smokey essentials will available again anytime soon. Not a bad track on either album. More than exquisite break-up song found here too: "Fork In The Road" on "Going..", and more great B-sides/should have been A-sides like "Since You've Won My Heart". Top-heavy, both, with musical riches.

4 out of 5 stars One Good album, one fillout..........2001-06-07

It's a pity Tamla chose to release Away We Go-Go as a separate album way back in 66, because it's really mostly fill-out, I'm afraid. Although some of the tracks are vintage Smokey classics, the mind boggles what the two albums that surrounded it, Going to A-Go-Go and Make it Happen, could have been like if some of the best songs had replaced the fillouts there. Oh well.

Going to A-Go-Go, in sharp contrast, is one of the most brilliant albums of Smokey's Career. The Tracks of My Tears must surely rate among the best singles ever written, and Ooo Baby, Baby is perhaps the most intensely emotional track ever written. The album is not as good as Make it Happen, but this package (like all three) is well worth a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A FUN BALLET WITH QUITE A HISTORY!.......2000-01-30

It can be said that La Sylphide (Sylfiden as the Danes call it, was premiered by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836), composed by Herman Severin Lovenskiold and choreographed by Bournonville, is the earliest piece of ballet music from the Romantic period that has been recorded. However, an ealier version of the same ballet by a different composer (Schneitzhoeffer)--no recordings--and choreographer has been revived by the Paris Ballet (Who knows how faithful it is to the original!). La Sylphide is a story about a female spirit, called the Sylphide, who falls in love with a young man; he too falls in love with her. But the little courtship is to be cut short by a witch. The fairy tale ends with the death of the Sylphide. The star ballerina of the first version of La Sylphide was Marie Taglioni, who was forever associated with the beginning of the Romantic ballet. Now we come to the version recorded on this CD. First, a little history. After the Danish choreographer, August Bournonville, saw Marie Taglioni dance in the role of the Sylphide at the Paris Opera, he wanted to stage his own production of the ballet. But first, he had to purchase the rights for using the score (by Schneitzhoeffer), but to his disappointment, it was too expensive. Consequently, he decided to have entirely new music written. And the man to accomplish this was Lovenskiold. So successful was this second version that the complete Bournonville choreography along with Lovenskiold's score are still used today by the Royal Danish Ballet. This is a superb "complete" performance by the Danish Radio Sinfoniette. The sound is clear and rich! Damgaard who has been the chief conductor at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1990 conducts beautifully. Under his baton, the orchestra makes the music sound alive and poignant. For those who are interested in ballets or just a great fairy tale, I highly recommend they get this CD. The only alternative recording is the one on Chandos, performed by the Royal Danish Orchestra (conducted by Garforth). It is also excellently performed (Read my review for that recording!). That CD contains an extra number (a pas de deux, which is not ever played as part of the complete ballet), which is a delight to hear! The CPO version, however, contains James' Act 1 solo, which is not in the Chandos recording. If you're a completist, get both!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Lovenskiold 's Ballet.......1999-10-26

It is a beatiful recording of the first romantic ballet, who has a precursor on Taglioni's Sylphide (which can be appreciate on video recording by Ghislene Thesmar interpretation with the corps of Opera Paris Ballet, music by Scheneihoffer, available at amazon.com). The perfomance of Lovenskiold partiture by the Danish Radio Simfonieta conducted by Daamgaardt is perfect, without affectation and it reach the maximum climax on second act. I bought this record because I listen on the radio the overture and the introduction of the first act, which inmediately decided me to find out and bought this version. There is only a criticism to the booknote which is included on the CD. Taglioni 's Sylphide has been succesfull performed in our century, on the seventies by a reconstruction taken on by Pierre Lacotte and interpreted by Ghislaine Thesmar. Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires offer this version on 1974 on stage and it was suscefull received at Argentine and many great Argentine Ballerinas interpreted the beautiful role of the light Sylphide.
