If Funkadelic was aimed at older rock fans and Parliament at older R&B fans, then the offshoot Bootsy's Rubber Band was aimed at younger listeners, the "geepies" in Bootsy-talk, who would be attracted to Bootsy's cartoon character and funky, cartoonish songs. His lengthy career continues with the double CD Blasters of the Universe. The first disc contains 14 songs, which recall the glory days of P-Funk with their catchy chants and elaborate vocal harmonies atop a churning, muscular dance beats. The second disc recycles eight of those tunes in extended, instrumental mixes, thus making it easier for today's hip-hop collagists to sample (and pay royalties on) Collins' inimitable grooves. After all, there's hardly a major rap act who hasn't sampled a P-Funk or Bootsy's Rubber Band track at some point. --Geoffrey Himes

From the Label
He invented funk bass with James Brown. He reinvented it with George Clinton in Parliament/Funkadelic. His solo career turned funk inside out with the Rubber Band. Ladies and Gentleman, from all corners of the universe, the man with the sunglasses and the platforms is back and he's gonna tear the roof off the sucker again. The name is still Bootsy, baby....May the funk be with you.

After laying low for a few years, Bootsy Collins relaunched his career just in time for the '90s "funk resurgence," though true believers know that the funk never went away. BLASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, his first release for Rykodisc features an all-new Rubber Band, along with some of the original Funk Mob from back in the day. A two-hour-plus collage of live and studio material, slow grinds and bottom-heavy gutbucket grooves, BLASTERS was greeted as a welcome kick in the booty from one of the true originators of the funk canon.

"It's all come back around," Bootsy noted at the time of release. "This is a record that we've been wanting to do for awhile. After doing all live shows, that told me people really wanted to hear the old way that we used to put records together, but with a whole 'nother outlook, a whole new reach for it with new faces and new places. I tried to mix the old and the new, with more of a live feel to it, which is something we didn't think about trying to do until the people said, 'Well, give up the funk!' "

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2007-07-18

The Blasters were truly original. Many people think of them as only a Rockabilly band (which they did extraordinarily well), but as this set confirms, they blazed a wide path. Truly a great band and a great CD set to showcase that. I'm very pleased with the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars skip the first 12.......2007-06-10

skip the first twelve cuts, they are a work in progress, the rest really rock with that retro fifties/eighties punk attitude, well written songs....and guitar energy...

IF YOU LIKE THE ROCKABILLY SOUND THIS IS FOR YOU. GREAT SONGS FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS FROM U.S.A., THIS COLLECTION HAVE ALL THE SONGS YOU SHOULD NEED TO HAVE FROM THE BLASTERS, A CLASICC RECORD!!!

I was born in 1955. When I first heard the Blasters, it was like being born again ! I don't see how I could add to the praises others have bestowed upon this fabulous album right here, but I just wanted to insist on one point one fellow came up with : Pleeeeeaaaaaaase, re-release Phil Alvin's Unsung Stories on CD ! What on earth must we do ? Start a petition here on Amazon ? Meet in the street and start a demonstration ? A riot maybe ? Pleeeeeeeaaaaase, re-lease Unsung Stories !

these two discs are blazing for the most part.Bootsy hardly gets the Love&respect he deserves.this man is very talented.not only on bass, but as a guitar player, keyboard player and a blazing drummer.not to mention as a writer, arranger&producer.then on top of all of that he has a blazing band that can give up the funk and take names.this is a good set.a must have for fans of the P-Funk Mob.

"4-11-44" is as good as its gonna get without Dave Alvin. This is classic rockabilly blues. Phil Alvin's voice is like hearing an old friend and "on the rebound" would make Charlie Rich Proud. If you pine for the past (the 50's, 60's and The 80's) this is where it's at. Buy Now.

The Blasters are a blast! And this album is a real treat. I'm not certain how to describe their music - rockabilly? blues? rockabluesy? or just rockin' American music? -- and I'm not sure it matters. My suggestion is to listen to the samples Amazon has provided, because even 30 second bites of The Blasters are pretty darn tasty.

With so many good songs on one CD, I'll touch on a few. Daddy Rollin' Stone struts, in the studio audio version, as well as the live, computer-playable video version (this is the only video on the disc). The title track is a great number about playing your lucky numbers ("If you're working harder than you're getting paid, 4-11-44/The poor man's remedy"). Julie is a plaintive promise to a lover who's a prison term away. Dry River is a fine ballad about lost Los Angeles and lost love. Precious Memories is a rollicking romp down memory lane ("I turned out to be/The only hell my Mama ever raised"). Just To Be With You is a very good harmonica-led blues track. And the closing track, Fire of Love, is about playing with fire ("Now love is an ember/It once was a flame") while trying not to get burned. Throughout, Phil Alvin is in fine voice and the band is terrific.

I've saved the best for last. My favorite is the rocker Rebound. Just try sitting still during Rebound, I dare you. If you're not bouncing around the room inside the first minute...call 911...check for a pulse...heartbreak has never been so much fun.

Thanks to The Blasters, even being unlucky can be very lucky indeed. 4-11-44 is a very lucky number.

Album Description

The Blasters emerged from the Los Angeles rock scene in the late 1970s. Led by brothers Phil and Dave Alvin, their contemporary twist on America's not-so-distant past set new standards for American roots rock. Frequent shows with fellow Angelenos X helped earn the band legions of loyal fans whose numbers continue to swell today. In August 2003, the original members reunited (once again) with both Alvin brothers intact. Captured on their first DVD and this companion CD, the set showcases 19 tracks, including staples like "Marie Marie," "Border Radio" and "I'm Shaking." Joining them onstage are Sonny Burgess, Billy Boy Arnold, and surviving members of The Calvanes and The Medallions - artists who have all played an important and influential role in the band's history. The Blasters Live! Going Home documents the band nearly 25 years after its formation. They've never sounded better.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best CD of 2004 - What it means to be Live!.......2005-01-27

This is clearly the best CD of 2004 if not the best of the decade. The production and sound for a live CD is incredible - clear, clean, and captivating. But to love this CD like I do, you have to appreciate piano (Gene Taylor) and background vocals (The Valvanes and The Medallions) -- all together. What The Blasters provide by themselves is incredible (Phil Alvin's singing and Dave Alvin's guitar alone would be worth the price of admission), but who they have accompying them is extraordinary. I cannot wait to receive the DVD of this concert because the CD makes it sound like a blast. Most of their classics are here (Marie, Marie; American Music; and Border Radio), an all-time (Joe Turner) classics (Flip, Flop, and Fly), and some incredible sounding "lesser classics" (Don`t You Lie To Me, So Long Baby Goodbye, and Have Mercy Baby). In the old horror classics they use to put a mirror near one's mouth to see if one were alive and breathing, now all you need to do is put this CD on and check if their feet are tapping. Try it on yourself, since you are alive, you will also want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent come back cd, recorded in Santa Ana, CA.......2004-06-03

I love local bands from the most beautiful place on earth Orange County! This is one of OC's best rockabilly bands, and they sound as good if not better then they ever have, an extra added bonus is hearing Billy Boy Arnold's duet with them, his voice is so "rockabilly 1950's", and of course he really was a recording artist from that period, and hasn't lost a thing. This concert sounds like it could have been recorded in 1955, I mean this music sounds like the stuff from Sun Records! A great fun set of lively rockabilly and occasional jump blues, by a super tight swingin' band, recorded at the famed Galexy theatere in Santa Ana!

4 out of 5 stars The Blasters are back!.......2004-04-08

A blistering live set, recorded in the Santa Ana, California's Galaxy Theatre, in the band's old Southern California stomping grounds... Phil Alvin spits out his lyrics like he wants to set the mic on fire, while Dave whips through some dazzling guitar licks... These guys may be old geezers, but they sure haven't mellowed out!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!! Blasters Forever!.......2004-03-05

Just had to post a few comments about this. When i heard that the Blaster's first and only concert video would be released on DVD and CD i just had to go out and get em both.. all you blasters fans out there will know that these guys are all about playing live! - well, the CD & DVD totally captures the energy and atmosphere... and if you never got to hear em play live... u just have to get this !! - The companion DVD that comes with the CD is just as awesome in it own capacity... Both the CD and DVD feature performances of "Blasters" classics such as "American Music", "Marie, Marie" and "Border Radio". They are also joined on stage by rockabilly guitarist Sonny Burgess, Chicago blues great Billy Boy Arnold and the surviving members of the California doo wop legends The Calvanes and The Medallions.

go buy this now!!

adios

5 out of 5 stars Better then i thought it would be........2004-03-01

Here is the truth, this is a great dvd. The sound quality is excellent, the picture very sharp, the Blasters as a group materiel is a bit stronger then the seven tracks with there invited guests.I was not sure to i wanted to take a chance on this dvd at first, but i am glad i did.I believe it was put together by the former Rhino people, it is a top notch product.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS EVER!!!.......2003-08-03

Founded by brothers Phil and Dave Alvin, the Blasters tore up the early 80s L.A. punk scene with their electric, punked-out, blend of rockabilly, blues and country. Breaking up shortly after their John Mellencamp-produced "Hard Line" failed to garner the national attention it deserved, and the brothers began fighting all the time, it looked like the Blasters would be nothing more than a vinyl-only footnote to the later, Grammy-winning, career of Dave Alvin. Luckily, however, their catalog is being reissued and, even luckier, Phil and Dave have mended some fences. The result of that fence-mending was an intentionally brief live reunion last year that yields this scorcher of an album.

Joined by fellow Blasters John Bazz, Bill Bateman and Gene Taylor, the Alvin brothers tear through seventeen of their best songs, from originals like "Long White Cadillac" (later a hit for Dwight Yoakam) and Dark Night (featured in the film "From Dusk to Dawn") to blues classics like "Cryin for my Baby" and "One Bad Stud," all done with a fiery style that makes moving your body mandatory.

If there's a flaw to this album, it's that it's probably their last for another twenty years, given the brothers are back to their solo careers. But at least we have this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Live Recordings Ever.......2003-01-31

I know I'm going to sound like an oldtimer in writing this review, but back when I was in high school in the early 1980's I had the pleasure of growing up in Southern California when music was so alive. Bands like X, Van Halen, Los Lobos, the Plimsouls and the Minutemen were playing small clubs and creating excitement about new music. Some of it was punk, some of it was hard rock, and then there were the Blasters.

Some folks said the Blasters played rockabilly. Some even thought they sounded Country. Then again, they were playing blues too. The bottom line is that they played the best American music you would ever want to hear, and they were absolutely the best live band around.

Alas, things don't last forever. The band, which features brothers Phil and Dave Alvin couldn't stay intact in their original form and that was a good thing. Dave went on to a great solo career and even won a Grammy and continues to be one of America's great songwriters.

Given the Blaster's heritage, the band re-released a compendium of all of their recorded music titled Testament. The two CD-set enabled the band to offer a more permanent public release of music that had long been out of print.

Last year, the band played five concerts in Southern California and this CD was recorded at one of the shows at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. The band also toured after the release of this CD as well.

I had the pleasure of attending two of those shows and feel honored to have had the opportunity to witness two of the greatest rock and roll shows I've ever seen. This CD is faithful to the quality and energy of those shows and is worth your investment.

Yes, the band members have aged a bit. Phil is a bit heavier and Gene Taylor has plenty of gray hair in that bushy beard. But they will give any band in the world a run for their money. This CD doesn't have a single track on it that won't make you want to sing along or dance. This is what American Rock and Roll is supposed to be.

5 out of 5 stars Top 10 of 2002.......2003-01-22

Why, oh why has massive acceptance escaped this band? They continue to be one of the vital forces in American music, after more than 20 years. The caliber of live performances contained herein will never be matched by 75% of the CDs on Billboard Magazine's weekly Top 10 in sales in any given week, even with millions of dollars in studio "sweetening." Talent and tunes!!!When I win the mega lottery, this is the band I'm hiring to play at my celebration party.

4 out of 5 stars Quit teasing us.......2003-01-15

So they got together in L.A. last year to put together a terrific show, which sounds great when played on CD as a live recording. I love this album. What sets it apart from many live albums is that the songs still sound fresh. Maybe it's because they "broke up" and hadn't played in awhile, and needed to prove something. Maybe because they knew it was going to a gig just to record a live album and they wanted to get it right. But boy, I miss them even more after seeing this.

So then why four stars instead of five? Stubborn principle. First, they're redone songs. Second, I didn't see the band tour in my area, so I imagine it was a one time get together. The album itself has all the energy and musicianship I would expect from the band, and I've played it over and over again. It's just not knowing if they're going to get back into the studio or tour again that bugs me.

4 out of 5 stars Viva Phil Alvin!.......2002-12-08

3.5 stars

Don't get me wrong, I'm as happy to see the Blasters back together as I would be if Carl Perkins crawled out of the ground and reached for a Stringbender. For all the crowing about Dave Alvin's maturation as a solo artist, the Blasters were his high-water mark for energy and just plain fun music. And there is plenty of energy here, but perhaps a bit too much bombast. A few of the tracks sound like Jimmy Thackery or some other uber-amplified bar-band drudgery. The Blasters worked because they could mix tasteful playing with driving, nine-pound hammer rock and roll.

Nevertheless, this is a welcome return. Good covers of Guitar Watson and Billy Boy Arnold, great version of "Long White Cadillac." ...

Americana--a mixture of folk, rockabilly, blues, country, Cajun, and other roots music--is now a well-established radio and industry genre, and this is the album that almost single-handedly created it. When the Blasters, fronted by brothers Phil and Dave Alvin, came roaring out of Downey, California, during the heyday of punk back in 1977, many considered them a throwback, but once the savage energy of this band hits you, it's obvious they ain't no wannabes. They took every style considered corny and unhip by the new wave generation, and in a magical burst of inspiration, turned it into something that never goes out of style--high octane, pedal-to-the-metal rock & roll. Luckily, Rollin' Rock's Ronnie Weiser had the wisdom to rush them into the studio and capture them at the height of their creative frenzy. Now classic Dave Alvin tunes such as "Marie Marie" and the title track rub up against chestnuts like the Hollywood Flames' "Buzz Buzz Buzz," and sparks fly. This long-overdue reissue includes seven tracks that never made it onto the original vinyl, to give you 19 raw and raunchy tracks that sum up the past, present, and future of American music. --j. poet

5 out of 5 stars The Blasters - American Music.......2007-02-07

This is a great release. All the tracks from the first Blaster's LP plus the bonus tracks. The sound quality is a little edgy, but still well worth the listen. I saw them live in Philadelphia in 1985 as a five piece band and they were phenominal. This is where it all began. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALL-AMERICAN ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC.......2001-08-04

The Blasters were one of the great unsung roots rock bands. With Dave Alvin leading the way on guitar, and his brother Phil on vocals, these guys were at the forefront of the late 70's early 80's rockabilly revival. What seperated the Blasters from the rest of the pack was their ability to combine their rockabilly sound with everything from R&B and country to punk. And as members of the L.A. punk scene, they were influenced by bands like X, who Dave Alvin later joined after the Blasters broke up. They also had a little bit of a country sound at times, probably influenced a little by Dwight Yoakam, who they often shared a double bill with. Just like the title of this cd suggest, this is all American Music. Influenced a lot by people like Jerry Lee Lewis and Big Joe Turner. But by no means did they copy these artists. The Blasters had a distinct sound of their own. There is a ton of great music on this cd. The songs I particually like are their anthem "AMERICAN MUSIC" and "MARIE MARIE", a song which another outstanding rockabilly artist Shakin' Stevens made a hit out of over in England. I also like the song "BARN BURNING", a bluesy tune that Dave Alvin later did on his solo album. All the tunes here are 2 to 3 minute little gems that keep this album rolling along nicely. My only gripe about Blasters music is why haven't they released more of it. Warner Brothers needs to re-release the "Blasters Collection" cd of their greatest hits off their 4 albums. I can't believe "American Music" is all they have availiable from their catalogue. If you like the Blasters, I also suggest picking up "Blastered", a Tribute To The Blasters. This is an excellent collection of Blaster songs from 16 of the best rockabilly bands around. In the meantime, American music is a good (and only) place to start listening to what I consider one of the very best roots rock bands ever.

5 out of 5 stars God Bless America, AND THE BLASTERS!!.......2001-06-20

So someone introduced you to the music of Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men one night at a ripping good party, eh? Or maybe they played stuff by "X"? If this is the case then, you had one of two polar reactions... you either loved it beyond belief or hated it with a passion. If the former is the case, then you MUST hear where it all began!! The Blasters are Rockabilly/Hillbilly/Cajun/Blues/R&B/Rock & Roll all blendered together into what the album title describes as "American Music"! I'm sure the members of the Stray Cats and Webb Wilder all have multiple, well-worn copies of this classic everywhere they go. If you dig roots music with a blues edge played with a ripping good guitar, thumping bass, thundering drums, and surprisingly thoughtful songwriting, then this will blow you out of the water! It will also send you on a frenzy trying to get every copy known of the original Blasters live shows from the late 1970s when punk rock was all the rage. Dave Alvin and the rest of this band are true American originals that made legendary reputations out of all the roadhouses that this band tore up musically during their too short reign.

Buy it and tell a friend!!

4 out of 5 stars High-Energy Road Music.......2001-04-14

I saw the Blasters play in Austin back in the early 80s-great show-but I had forgotten all about them until I was recently turned on to Dave Alvin. Remembering what a great show it was and wanting to know more about Alvin's music, I picked up this little gem. This album is good old-time rock and roll with a judicious layer of rockabilly and blues. It takes me back to the days of the Mandolin Wind club in San Diego where one could always go and get a good dose of high-powered blues rock. While there is nothing here that could be termed virtuoso, every cut is enjoyable. The Blasters are bursting with high energy and that makes this CD a perfect companion for a road trip through the wide open west. Crank it up, beat on the steering wheel, and sail on down the road!

5 out of 5 stars Birth Of A Legend.......2001-04-11

Now that The Blasters' complete Slash recordings are now available on CD, I guess I'll have to find something else to lament. "American Music" is essential for any fan of rockabilly, roots, Americana, however you want to label it. This album takes us back to a time when the brothers Alvin were honing their chops in and around their hometown of Downey, CA. Rockin' Ronny Weiser believed in the band enough to take them into the studio and release the results on his tiny, but apparently influential label Rollin' Rock back in 1980, albeit in a run of less than 2,000 vinyl LP's. Even at this early stage, The Blasters fused an almost punk energy with rockabilly, swing, R&B, and country and called the results their own. Displaying the unrelenting drive and swing that would become their trademark, powered by Dave Alvin's revved up Fender pyrotechnics, brother Phil's versatile vocals (and on stage, a facial grimace that combined equal parts jack-o-lantern grin and constipation visage), and the crack rhythm section of bassist John Bazz and drummer Bill Bateman, this is a pretty engrossing look at the band in it nascent stage. Included are the original versions of several songs they would go on to re-record for their Slash/Warner Bros. releases, like "American Music," "Barefoot Rock," "Marie, Marie," and "Never No More Blues," as well as covers of Magic Sam's "21 Days In Jail" and Ray Harris' "Lone Wolf." Unqualifyingly recommended...

4 out of 5 stars Still the Blasters.......2005-01-12

This is the Blasters first studio album since their original run ended in the 1980s. So there are no Dave Alvin songs or guitar solos here. That said, this is still a good record. Phil Alvin sounds as great as ever, embodying the songs with his big voice and big personality. John Bazz also remains from the original lineup. The new members fit well, and the songs are great. My only quibble is that there are no songwriting credits. I recognize a lot of the tracks as being old songs, but is the entire album covers? Are any of these originals?

And on a final note, could somebody PLEASE reissue Phil Alvin's incredible first solo album, "(Un)Sung Stories" on CD?!
