A rare Canadian among the R&B elite, Deborah Cox is also notable as one of the few certified divas to write or cowrite her own songs. With her reputation thus established, Cox boldly pushes into a new direction on The Morning After, offering comparatively few ballads as well as two songs aimed straight at the dance floor: the percussive rump-shaker "Up & Down (In & Out)" and the wildly caffeinated "Mr. Lonely." That both appear in myriad remixed versions on an accompanying CD makes Cox's intent clear. Still, fans of the singer's earlier, softer sounds aren't completely shut out. "Hurt So Much" is anguish as a state of mind, while the lush, octave-defying "Play Your Part" puts the passive-aggressive relationship into focus. Sisters get an anthem in "Starting with You," which best captures Cox's overriding messages of affirmation and individuality. Of course, with a voice this boundless and beautiful, Cox could make the white pages sound tingly. That she strives for something more makes The Morning After worth hearing. --Kim Hughes

Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.

Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith Eisler

Bryn Terfel has a beautiful voice. Listening to him is very pleasant and definitely something to look forward to. I read a review saying he would replace tenor Pavroti. However, I believe that Mr. Terfel is a Baritone and not a Tenor. That does not detract from the fact that he should be considered one of the world's top male singers. His voice is truly impressive. This CD by Bryn Terfel is one from our collection that is outstanding and a favorite.

Sorry, I think this guy is one of the most overrated singers out there today. He always sounds like he is singing holding his nose shut. VERY nasal sounding.

If you want to listen to an incredibly beautiful voice, buy one of Josh Groban's CD's--you won't regret it! He has the voice of the century!

Excellent selection of music. It covers many different types. My wife likes being able to hear the words with out instruments drowning out the vocals. I find it relaxing and many of the songs are familiar and very well done.

Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts.......2006-02-25

Simply superb. I don't know what our local (Wash DC) paper was talking about when they said Deep River was the weakest link. I was enthralled from beginning to end. I have had the pleasure of hearing Bryn Terfel live in recital at the Kennedy Center. I can assure you that his voice has only improved with age. He was wonderful then and is spectacular now!

A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15

Bryn Terfel harkens back to earlier American operatic stars such as Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill who crossed grenres to satisfy their unquenchable need to sing any and all songs that moved them to an appreciative public. These great singers all had their origins singing sacred music from their respective religions and learned to lay their considerable talents before the altar of the simple inspirational song.

This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.

Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.

I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.

This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

Real rock 'n' roll!.......2003-08-23

Back in the early 70s the J. Geils Band put out some bluesy harp-and-piano style rock 'n' roll, and their second album, 1971s "The Morning After", is one of their best and most varied.

It opens with the catchy R&B of "I Don't Need You No More", followed by the excellent, harp-driven instrumental "Whammer Jammer", which is a showcase for the group's talented harpist and co-founder, Richard "Magic Dick" Salwitz.
"So Sharp" is a funky, swinging slice of soulful blues-rock, "The Usual Place" is one of the band's best ballads, and then comes "Gotta Have Your Love" and "Looking For A Love", two tough barroom rockers.

"Gotta Find Me A New Love" is a little bit generic, but it's a good listen while it lasts. "Cry One More Time" is a great slow piece of rhythm & blues. And the album finally winds down with the piano-driven funk of "Floyd's Hotel" (more excellent harp playing) and the hard rocker "It Ain't What You Do (it's how you do it)".

Even though this is hardly innovative music, the J. Geils Band makes it all sound fresh and energetic. And you don't even need to edit anything out!
"The Morning After" stands alongside "The J. Geils Band" and "Bloodshot" as the group's best and bluesiest efforts. Highly recommended.

A rock and roll classic!.......1998-09-20

The Morning After, along with the first J Geils Band album, are among the finest LP's in my collection. I learned to play the Blues Harp listening to Majic Dick play Whammer Jammer. This is a great party album. The J Geils Band offered an incredible amount of energy on this album and it is one that will make you feel happy!

Face it, anyone who can play Horowitz's fabled transcriptions or Cziffra's madcap interlocking octaves Flight of the Bumblebee will get attention. What is most impressive, though, is that Arcadi Volodos replicates the notes, but not the performances. His tempos and voicings are completely different, and just as valid, if not quite as coruscating as the originals. In other words, Volodos makes this repertoire his own, as well as the other selections on this well-recorded debut outing. --Jed Distler

I do not want to take away the pleasure of the many reviewers who have found this item a thrilling enjoyment. Only I want to issue a warning to all lovers of the art of the piano: Do not buy this album in the hope of hearing a worthy successor to such past Russian titans as Richter and Gilels! Volodos is easily their master in terms of blistering dexterity, power of attack and distinct arpeggios. Yet, in all other respects he is dwarfed by comparison. His playing, all in all, is egocentric, crude in terms of its conventionality of expression and bereft of the humour that might have made his incredibly overloaded arrangements truly delightful. Now, they are at most decent circus acts, leaving one to wonder how one man with only two hands can plays this fast and how that very same man can take such a hamfisted approach to his slap-stick repertoire.

With an orchestra Volodos most often plays as if he cannot hear the other musicians through the noise he is making. On his own he fares slightly better. Still, he seems to be more in the service of technical boasting than musical expression. To take two examples:

1. His "Bumblebee" clocks in at a mindboggling 1.36 sharp. That's about all that recommends it. In musical terms, the performance is absurd: This witty piece is meant to portray an amiably buzzing furball, NOT an angry wasp on steroids.

2. Many performers have been tempted to beef up Mozart's somewhat monotone K331 "Turkish March". Volodos' paraphrase goes over the top with nifty counterpoint coupled with all sorts of tricks from the virtuoso shelf. This could have been a true delight if the performer had only loosened up a little and offered the occasional comic relief that such an encore so obviosuly calls for. Here Volodos simply seems oblivious to the inherent potential for musical expression. On a repeated listening the performance tires by its utter conventionality of phrasing.

Praised be the day when Volodos opens up his ears to the music he is performing. Then we might hope for new reference recordings of various works in the superdifficult division. Until then we may only grieve that such supernatural technique is going to waste in sideshow idleness. If you crave for a contemporary Russian virtuoso, try out Nikolai Lugansky, even if his somewhat austere taste in the romantic repertoire might deter some fans of Horowitz et al. Lugansky is in supernatural technical command if the keyboard, yet never leaves you in doubt that you are listening to a true musician.

superlatives fail.......2006-10-22

Volodos is simply one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard. The transcriptions on this CD are well worth your investment. I was fortunate to hear Volodos at Lincoln Center play the finger-bending Prokofiev 2nd piano concerto. I am a professionally trained pianist, and I have simply never heard a performance to equal it. I was convinced two or more people were playing. The emotional power was overwhelming. I wish he would record it. And the complete Transcendantal Etudes.

Mind-shatteringly superb.......2006-08-08

Volodos strikes us with some incredible works here, friends. These are quite simply some of the most perfectly executed works upon the piano I have heard, and this is no light affair considering the depression-inducing difficulty of some of these behemoths of the piano (Horowitz transcription of the Hungarian Rhapsody sounds like it requires a virtuoso of the highest order to play well.) We're dealing with a pianistic genius who I'm sure will continue to astound us in the future. And what, he began studying at the age of sixteen!? I want him to record all the Transcendental Etudes, but who knows if that will ever occur. Check out his Rachmaninoff concerto as well, it's about as close to perfect as it gets.

Unbelievable.

Ladies and Gentlemen, what we have here is quite possibly the greatest piano virtuoso alive today. While the musicality and emotion the artist puts in his work are exeptional, but not without precedence, his virtuosity, technique and rapidity of execution are quite simply...GOD-GIVEN. Period. The title of this project is aptly-named. Regina Carter, a Detroit-born, classically-trained jazz violinist, traveled to Genoa, Italy in December, 2001, and performed on Paganini's legendary Guarneri violin nicknamed "the Canon." After winning the hearts of the skeptical Italians, with armed gunmen surveying her every move, Carter played flawlessly, and became the first jazz musician and African-American to the play the instrument. The next year, Carter returned to Genoa, recorded on Paginini's violin and performed a pleasing program of crossover-friendly light classics, South American compositions, a movie tune, and original works. Produced and arranged by Jorge Calandrelli and Ettore Strata, and backed by a combo led by pianist Werner "Vana" Gierig, the selections, while not exactly groundbreaking, successfully show off Carter's impeccable and soulful playing, and the violin's rich and reverent tones. An 18-piece orchestra supports Carter on Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante defunte," Piazzolla's "Oblivion," and Ennio Morrricone's Cinema Paradiso theme. Borislav Strulev's cello co-stars on Luiz Bonfa's "Black Orpheus (Manha de Carnaval)" and Faure's "Apres un reve." For Debussy's "Reverie," Carter delivers some straight-ahead swing. The most outstanding music I've heard in years. It was playing in a designer's home in Highlands, NC when we went to show it to real estate clients. And boy did it set the mood: Sophistication, High Culture and Joy.
After we left, we orderd 3 copies- one for each of us.
And we buy about 2 CD's year. That's how motivivated we were.

Terrible, terrible CD. I got it two day's ago and could not even listen through the whole CD. Regina plays the violin and the music with such bad taste. What a disgrace to the once Paganini's violin. I can't believe I spent my money on this. It should not even have 1 star.

Like a breeze, caressing you..........2006-08-21

Well, you know how there are some songs that work best in their original form and should not be remade / remixed / jazzed up by any musician at all? Regina Carter is the exception to that rule, for her touch is magic.

Save for Regina's own composition, every song on this album is given a contemporary jazzy twist. The sound is light, breezy and wistful. Regina possesses the inimitable ability to make a violin sing so tenderly, it breaks your heart just listening to her play. This lovingly produced album is the perfect companion for many things: a candle-lit dinner, appreciating a beautiful painting, retrospection, a drink in a bar, a ride in a car, gazing at scenery from afar... the possibilities are endless.

Generally, the problem with remaking well-known songs is that playing the tune, give and take some rephrasing or improvisation, is not enough. To impress, the arrangement, playing, and overall production has to be inspired and tight. In this respect, Regina delivers. It is unfortunate that there are some moments on this album which sound a tad "too easy" or, for lack of a better word, pedestrian. But given the overall substance of this album, those moments are easily overlooked.

For those familiar with the original classical works on this album, they would surely appreciate and marvel at how Regina manages to make songs that are tough to remake, sound so gloriously refreshing. Like a breeze, caressing and loving you, this album is a god-sent.

I love this band.......2006-10-06

The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Byrds and some hippies on acid all had a roll in the hay in the Aussie Outback, and nine months later, out popped the Morning After Girls. Much of the Girls' strength lies in their wearily sexy vocals and swirling bed of guitars, strings and harmonies. My love for the Morning After Girls began with their first EP, which features fuzzed out guitars, the dueling vocals and songwriting of Sacha Lucashenko and Martin Sleeman and lots of tambourine. From opening track "Straight Through You," which would have fit perfectly in between the Mamas and the Papas and Buffalo Springfield at Monterey Pop Festival '67 to final track "Lazy Greys" with it's whispered count-in and gorgeous boy-girl harmonies, the EP is a 5-track introduction to a band that leaves you gagging for more.

The first track I heard off of EP 2 was through the video for "Hi Skies," which you can check out at their site, and I couldn't believe what I heard (or saw). On this track the opening "Three Four" count-in is screamed, not whispered, and Martin's vocals leave familiar territory and jump into a perfect rock scream/growl. The second EP in its entirety fits remarkably well with the first. Lead track "Chasing Us Under" flows perfectly from "Lazy Greys," with its gorgeous cello line and delicate guitar parts. "Always Mine" always makes me turn up the record, with its opening feedback and propulsive drumming.

Even though this is 2 EPs smushed together, it is an amazing introduction to this band.

SOLID first record!.......2006-06-27

The Morning After Girls, an Australian band, are a bunch of guitars and a dollip of percussion. My definition of a rock band line up!

And while from Australia one might SWEAR that they're from the Pacific Northwest. The MAG's, as do I, worship at the Rock Alter of Anton and Courtney!LOL In fact as one of the other reviews for this cd correctly points out this disc could be a lost Dandy Warhol's record circa Rule OK and Come Down!

But don't take that comment to mean they stole the Dandy's sound. It's more the the alternating rocker/trippy ATTITUDE that is conveyed by The MAG's. They are musical brothers and sisters in arms.

Too bad Amazon (as of this writing) doesn't offer up sound clips, but suffice to say this is a collection of all out rockers and laid back psychedelia. "Always Mine" and "Run for Our Lives" are two stand out blasts.

The best song for me is "Chasing us Under." It's psychedelic soaked beauty! The only problem with the song, in fact the reason I gave the disc only four stars, is it could have, should have been longer. The perfect example of this is "Chasing Us Under." I love long tripped out songs, like the Dandy's "16 Minute Rave Up," any Warlocks jam, or Quarter After's "Too Much to Think About." "Chasing Us Under" should have been at least ten minutes. The song is still great, my favorite on the disc, but not long enough.

If you enjoy the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Dandy's, The Out Crowd, The Warlocks, The Quarter After, Major Stars, Dead Meadow and/or Innaway then you NEED this record.

Kangaroos can make some good damn music. This is probably the best stuff I've heard in a while. 4 guitars and vocalists, drums and a girl on percussion. Sounds really good together! Nice simple riffs.

Saw them on KCRW website and was hooked. Not sure how to describe them (I would go on their website to listen to tracks), but they are something special. Catch their live show if you can, you won't be disappointed, full of energy, melodies, and good 'ol distortion.

Championed by Geoff Travis (who discovered The Smiths and manages Pulp and Beth Orton), Cara Dillon has one of the most beautiful voices to emerge from the Celtic scene in recent years. Her latest effort, After The Morning (her first release in the US) establishes her uncanny ability to wed traditional influences to contemporary folk sounds and themes. The album was produced by Sam Lakeman (both were former members of the group The Equation) and features an appearance from Paul Brady on the duet The Streets of Derry. After The MorningÂ's first single, Never In A Million Years, garnered heavy airplay from BBC2 in the UK, was the single of the week on BBC Radio Ulster and earned Cara a spot at this yearÂ's Cambridge Folk Festival. Dillon is no stranger to success. In 2002 she was nominated for four and walked away with two BBC Awards: Best Traditional Track (for Black is the Colour) & the Horizon (Best Newcomer) Award. In 2004 she was honored with the Irish Meteor Award for Best Female Singer and the Irish Tattler Woman of the Year Music Award. It comes as no surprise that Q Magazine would assert that "...Dillon's vocals, expressive beyond her years, are right on the money."

Born in 1975 and raised in Dungiven, Co. Derry, Cara comes from a family steeped in traditional Irish music. At 14 years old she won the acclaimed All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy and from there went on to earn her reputation as an outstanding vocalist with the young Irish band, Oige. In 1995 Cara replaced singer Kate Rusby in the new folk super-group, The Equation. It was as a member of The Equation that CaraÂ's musical partnership with Equation co-founder Sam Lakeman began, and since the mid-90s when the two left the band that partnership has developed at a rapid pace. Unusually sophisticated and yet completely unpretentious, their music reveals refreshing imagination and considerable flair and it belies the fact that they are both in their early 30s. While Cara Dillon is still relatively unknown on this side of the pond, After The Morning is sure to make her a favorite of North American folk music fans.

Wonderful 3rd Album!.......2007-07-13

I am really enjoying this album... The first song does veer towards pop rather than traditional, but it is an excellent song! There are also several awesome songs that tend more toward the traditional... like The Snows They Come The Soonest and Bold Jamie. Then there's Garden Valley, written by Scotland's modern poet laureate, Dougie MacLean, that Cara does a magnificant job with. Granted, there are a few songs that don't highlight Cara's ability as well as they could, but her beautiful voice can compensate for a lack in any song.

After Cara's first two excellent albums that retained a real traditional feel within a modern setting, this came as a huge disappointment. The voice is just as lovely, but the music has veered right away from the traditional and into bland commercial-style music. Right in the footsteps of Mary Black. A pity.

ONe of the best CD music investments I have made. Use it primarily for relaxation/meditation but it will also work well with massage environment.
It goes from spine tingling inspirational to soothing and relaxing. Totally shifts my conciousness to a higher plane.
