5 out of 5 stars Great Overview.......2006-06-14

This cd is a great if not complete overview of Linda's wonderful recordings, Linda had one of the best voices of the 70's and she is very underrated! Linda fit easily with R&B, Disco & Soul with this cd you get a mixture of those different styles, featuring the wonderful duets with Curtis Mayfield 'Between You & Me' & 'Love's Sweet Sensation', and Linda's big hit 'Runaway love'(with the Jones Girls on background vocals) and from my favorite Linda lp 'I'm Yours' the hit 'Shoot Your Best Shot', since the Singles Collection cd is out of print, this cd is the best start to get introducted to Miss Linda Clifford!

    5 out of 5 stars Compilation.......2005-08-28

I still remember Linda performing Runaway Love at Walt Disney
world years ago..a horrible thunderstorm was trying to ruin the
entire evening but during a break from the storm and after many
had given up and gone home Linda performed at her best..a real trooper....rain and all....

5 out of 5 stars DON'T COME CRYING TO ME??????.......2001-08-27

Very glad to have something by Linda Clifford on cd. This is a great compilation, especially given the bonus cd. BUT! WHERE IS "DON'T COME CRYING TO ME"? - definitely one of her best on par w/"red light" and "shoot your best shot" which are both here...

5 out of 5 stars Great Clifford Overview.......2001-07-26

Linda Clifford is not exactly unknown to soul and disco listeners, but somehow despite a frequent output of material in the late 70's and early 80's she still seems to have been underutilized, overlooked, and unfulfilled with regard to her talent and promise. Perhaps this is because during her most popular years her work fell roughly into 4 categories. The ballads were generally typical for a female singer of the time, while the biggest disco tracks she recorded were frenetic and shrill. Unfortunately her producers felt that frantic BPM and piercing backup singers would give punch to revived standards such as "If My Friends Could See Me Now" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The results were more kitsch than intended.

Much more successful were her soulful dance tunes, where a reasonable tempo and an R&B structure allowed Linda's vocals to shine warmly. This collection contains the best of these recordings: "You Can Do It," "Hold Me Close," "I Just Wanna Wanna," "You Are, You Are," and "Shoot Your Best Shot." The fourth category of songs was the rappish funk tunes in which Linda was called upon to be sassy, irritated, and a diva of the street. She played this role well, and it all but overshadowed her warmer, more tender side on vinyl and in album photos. "Runaway Love" was an interesting but not exceptional song, but "Don't Give it Up," the imitator that followed, was weak and made less sense. Maybe if she had been given stronger material this diva-with-an-attitude may have been more successful.

This two CD set also includes some early folk-soul tracks that are surprisingly effective, with Linda's voice fluent and beautiful. The second disc is the original I'm Yours lp, produced by Isaac Hayes. It is a more consistent affair and complements the compilation well. Despite the uneven material, this overview covers the essentials, presenting the less effective experiments as well as the highlights. It is a record of a true talent who would be welcome, no doubt, by many if she tried a return to popular music.

5 out of 5 stars She Shoots Her Best Shots!!!.......2001-02-24

Linda Clifford is in a word wonderful! The duets with Curtis Mayfield are highlights! As are "From Now On" & "Runaway Love". The second CD, The "I'm Yours" album is not to be missed!!! Linda at her Best! I am so glad to have this music on CD. To sum up in two words Wonderful Memories!!

    5 out of 5 stars Finally !.......2000-08-31

After years of suffering through the skips, tics and sundry noises a 22 year old piece of vinyl is wont to make, the wait is finally over. The new millennium has brought us a COMPACT DISC anthology of one of the disco era's greatest exponents, Linda Clifford. There is also a BONUS cd in this 2-CD set. The "I'M YOURS" album is here in its entirety.

Clifford is responsible for two of the most attitudinal songs ever to ignite a dance-floor: "Runaway Love" -- the ultimate "pack-your-stuff-and-get-out" anthem -- and "Don't Give It Up". "Runaway Love" is found here in all its 9 minute, 42 second glory. Unfortunately, "Don't Give It Up" is an edit that cuts out most of the drama. Clifford also managed to take the goofy "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from SWEET CHARITY and give it a little spirit. The great thing about this CD is that it shows that Linda was much more than a "Disco Diva". It includes some of her earlier R&B recordings, two of her duets with soul man Curtis Mayfield and two of her great soul radio cuts:"You Can Do It" from LINDA and "I Just Wanna Wanna".

Doesn't stop there: we get Clifford's funky "Red Light" from the movie FAME, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Shoot Your Best Shot". Also, Linda turns in a virtuoso rendition of "I Had A Talk With My Man" that is so soulful she can make you forget that Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield both recorded this great song.

All in all, this is a mind-blowing collection for anyone with an appreciation for 70's soul and Disco.

    1 out of 5 stars UGH!.......2007-05-08

I can't stand this song. This coming from the same guy who wants women to shake their "Money Makers" and has "H--s in different area codes" actually has something positive to say towards women after putting out several female-degrading records? SORRY, BUT I AM NOT BUYING.

    4 out of 5 stars A great song.......2007-03-11

Ludacris scared the Hell out of me with this single. This great song coming from the same guy who had "H03s in different area codes"? This is such a great song and has such a great message aimed towards women which is strange coming from Ludacris. Most of his other song are all about having sex with women. Luda should make songs like this more often. Great job, Luda.

4 out of 5 stars Running Away To This.......2007-02-15

There are very few times where rap music really does speak straight from the heart. Although more of it has been against others as beefs, there are very few songs now that are worth their message. Ludacris is one of those artists right now. His latest single with Mary J. Blige, Runaway Love, is a reflection of feelings towards abused and segregated women and how they see battered and abrupt life around them as people who are uncaring and with little compassion. I think that this song was absolutely strong and spoke a message that we reallly don't pay any attention to these days, considering more is put on the war in Iraq. This is one of the best songs out right now, and I think it is really worth its feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Great, definitely go with this and TAC.......2005-08-31

Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.

If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-07-03

I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

3 out of 5 stars Bought it used - thank God!.......2005-06-17

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.

However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.

I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)

    5 out of 5 stars magnificent!.......2005-06-15

Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.

As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.

*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.

*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.

*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.

*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.

*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.

*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.

*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).

*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!

Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!

    4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-20

I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.

For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)

    1 out of 5 stars Enormously Disappointing.......2004-10-01

As a big Bernstein fan, I was looking forward to this comp. But I couldn't even make it through one listen. I found it insipid, saccharine. The main idea behind this comp seems to be to stuff every recognizable theme Bernstein ever wrote into one set while cutting out all other sections including any variations or development. They've cut the meat out of the music and left only the fat. The playing is stiff, the tempos are rushed, the arrangements are terrible. Don't waste your time.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......2002-06-07

Fabulous recording. Puts you right in the saddle with the Duke, The Magnificent Seven or Charlton Heston's sandals! Power, scope, range, variety and total magnificence - this has it all. By far the best movie sound-track recording of all!

4 out of 5 stars Sit Up and Listen.......2001-06-28

You pop this CD in to your player and the glorios Magnificent Seven theme knocks you off your feet. I'd forgotten how good it was, an icon of testerone flowing unchecked. Then there is the touching innocent To Kill a Mockingbird theme. Starting with a simple music box theme, the music builds to a dramatic climax, as if all the emotion suddenly exploded. The Great Escape track is, I think, one of the very best march compositions of all time. With the tuba providing the baseline with its own melody, then the light brass, perky and upbeat, providing the second melody, this theme instantly evokes both the fatigue and robotic obedience required of prisoners and the brassy indomitable spirit characteristic of the RAF flyers. If you listen carefully you hear the deeper brass (French Horns) take up the theme and give it a more somber character, as yet another melody is sustained in the background. The Ten Commandments stands alone as a wonderful heroic piece. Buy the CD for any one track and you will be pleasantly surprised by the remainder.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Bernstein Sampler Yet!.......2000-05-21

Varese Sarabande has cheery picked from some of the finest (and most famous) film scores ever composed (and some of the best performances thereof yet recorded) in the second half of the last century. There are samples from sixteen film scores by Mr. Bernstein presented here (and since this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for this prolific, spectacularly-talented composer, let's hope there will be many more Bernstein compositions to come!). It's beyond great to have all 16 film scores represented on one CD, even though most/all of these tracks are available off other CDs (CD-burner freaks, you've been left at the gate, or, rather, the CD-R/W drive on this one!). It does get a bit confusing trying to figure out all the source material (there's Bernstein right off the film sound track, Bernstein conducting the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Bernstein conducting the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Mr. Joel McNeely conducting the Royal Scottish Orchestra, McNeely conducting Seattle Symphony orchestra, Mr. Cliff Eidelman conducting the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and so it goes). But quit making your brain ache; just spin up this CD and let your ears do their thing. And what a wonderful thing those ears will do. Mr. Bernstein, a master of tonality (like Erich Wolfgang Korngold before him), is probably best enjoyed in spurts or in selective film-score "cues"--mainly his opening/closing credit cues, since his scores tend to sag and become less dramatic in between. This CD focuses on the composer's strengths: mostly those opening/closing credit cues you can't help hearing in your mind over and over again. Although the performances are (as previously noted) from many sources, I can't find fault with a single one. The same goes with the recording/mastering/re-mastering. All first rate. One question remains: why are you still reading this write up when you could be buying the CD to empower your ears!

3 out of 5 stars The Bonus Track Was Unnecesary.......2002-02-03

The three main themes from "Cinema Paradiso", composed by Ennio and Andrea Morricone are fabulous and extremely touching. I really love them. However, they are repeated throughout this CD, with the sole exception of 'While Thinking About Her Again', 'Cinema On Fire', and 'Four Interludes'.

The main title is best represented on 'Cinema Paradiso' (track 1). 'Love Theme For Nata' is a fantastic nod for the love theme. And the theme for the child Toto is the one that I praise the most, and it's heard on 'Childhood And Manhood', even though it's repeated on 'First Youth'. And I have to say that the bonus track on this CD, which is a version of the theme played by the string section of the orchestra, was definitely unnecessary because it's a repetition of track 1.

It's a shame that such a marvelous work from Ennio Morricone gets lost in so many repetitions. One thing that makes this CD attractive though, as opposed to the original release, is that the sound is better recorded.

3 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack, Disappointed CD.......2001-08-06

It's a shame that, after all these years, they re-released this wonderful soundtrack CD without correcting an annoying problem found on the original release. I'm talking about the "electronic noise" (???) that can be heard on the track "Love Theme". About one-third of the way into that song, if you pay attention, you will hear the "scratching" sound for about a second or two. This really destroys that song. Everytime I listen to that track, as soon as I'm starting to really get into it, my mind keeps anticipating that annoying sound, which in turn, makes it a very unpleasant listening experience. The only difference between this release and the original (1989/1990) release is that this latest release has an extra track (string version of "Cinema Paradiso"). However, this extra track isn't better than the original performance/recording of the song (Track 1). Therefore, if you already own the original release, you don't gain anything by buying this latest release. The reason that I gave this CD three stars is because of the problem with the song "Love Theme" as mentioned above. There really are only three great tracks (songs) on this soundtrack CD: "Cinema Paradiso", "Love Theme" and "First Youth". If you take away the enjoyment of listening to one of these three great songs, it leaves only two for you to enjoy.
