Patrice Rushen is a very talented artist and composer! She is a very versatile musical genius. Not only can she play and compose music, her vocal talent adds to her outstanding accomplishments. This is old school Patrice Rushen at her finest. I love this CD!

4 out of 5 stars Go Patrice Rushen!.......2007-04-04

As an Amazon customer, I enjoyed listening to Patrice Rushen's greatest hits from back in the 1980's & 1990's such as "Sending me Forget-Me-Nots," "Haven't you Heard," and "You Remind Me." Her sultry, quiet-toned voice really made these chart topping classics great music to listen to at parties, clubs and social gatherings. This CD is hard to find in local stores, so you Patrice Rushen fans should "hurry and order from Amazon before THEY ARE OUT of STOCK!"

4 out of 5 stars wonderful!.......2007-03-08

i really enjoyed nearly all of the pieces on this album. the one that stands out is "settle for my love." nice changes and great mood.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! I never want to lose it.......2007-02-08

You can get Rushen's Magnum Opus on any compilation CD of 80s pop music. A lot of these other Quiet Storm gems, on the other hand are not easily found on compilation CDs, even though they are great songs in their own right ("Watch Out"/ "Feels So Real"). Rushen has made great use of synthesizers and uses a lot of different song structures that keep the music from sounding like pop kitsch.

This is a great and versatile CD for running or just listening to quietly in the dark.

It's very well worth the purchase price.

"I woke up thirsty on an island in the sea," went the last line in the last track on the last album by beloved indie rock pranksters, The Unicorns. At least two members took those words to heart, as frontman Nick Diamonds and drummer J'aime Tambeur return as Islands, a Montreal duo that reigns in some of its former band's more obnoxious qualities in favor of more manicured melodies and purposeful arrangements. Oh, who are we kidding? The seven-minutes-plus opener, "Swans (Life After Death)," sets the insane tone, showcasing sprawling rhythms and a freewheeling arrangement that leaves room for epic guitar solos, blustery piano flourishes and a falsetto vocal lead. It's like "November Rain" on magic mushrooms. Other highlights--if you could call them that--come in the form of the faux Caribbean jam "Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby," the spacey instrumental centerpiece "Tsuxiit," and the frankly convoluted prog-rock-goes-hip-hop of "Where There's A Whale, There's A Whalebone." Warning: They Might Be Giants sound rational in comparison. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

Hailing from Montreal, Islands is a 7 piece band founded by former Unicorns front man Nick Diamond and drummer J'aime Tambeur. Following the untimely disbandment of the Unicorns right as they were on the cusp of breaking through, this highly anticipated debut release by Islands entitled Return to the Sea, with its quirky sounds and refreshing, catchy melodies, contains collaborations with members of Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade and Beck.

5 out of 5 stars they're gRRReat!.......2007-02-07

I saw Islands open for Metric at the Fonda in Hollywood. they put on an awesome show - complete with a flaming guitar, a 8+ person music ensemble, and most importantly - excellent music. this CD has steadily grown on me, and is now one of my favorites. thank you, Islands.

5 out of 5 stars This music is... fun?.......2006-12-23

This CD is a bit "out there", and thus is not accessible to every audience. For example, if you have friends that listen to pop music all the time, they aren't going to be able to pop this in their CD players and enjoy it (I could be wrong here of course and this is a gross generalization). The feeling of this CD seems carefree and happy at times, and it reminds me of the way listening to Animal Collective makes me feel.

Criticism of the "rap" in "Where There's A Will, There's a Whalebone" seems uncalled for in my opinion. It's not like this is a hip-hop CD, and the disjointed sound is obviously what they were going for.

All in all, this is a great CD. But, one last note: I wasn't previously a fan of The Unicorns, so I didn't have the "hey, this doesn't sound like The Unicorns at all!" disappointment I see in here. So, if you are a fan of The Unicorns, just keep in mind that this isn't their latest CD under a different badge.

4 out of 5 stars A bit of a lark.......2006-11-28

Somewhere between "The Pixies" and "The Flaming Lips". Love the way they dont take themselves too seriously. Great little album if you are driving to the beach.

4 out of 5 stars Hey, if you like fun pop..........2006-11-24

I bought this album, listened to it, then payed no attention to it, dismissing it. I came back to it a couple weeks later and really started getting into it. The songs are really good and you can't go wrong with "swans", "rough gem", and "volcanoes". I was skeptical that this album wouldn't be what I loved from the unicorns, but in many ways it's even better. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Bones bones brittle little bones.......2006-11-21

The Unicorns turned out one album and one EP before shattering, reforming under a different name, shattering again, and scattering into other bands.

Hopefully the Isands will stick around longer than its mother band, because "Return to the Sea" is an outstanding debut album. Living up to their name, the Islands produce a flowing, fuzzy kind of pop, flavoured with calypso and dancehall music. Imagine Sufjan Stevens on a Caribbean kick, and you have the general idea.

It opens with soft flashes of synth, and some twangy guitar strings being plucked in a rather moody way. As "Swans (Life After Death)" kicks into its catchy folk melody, the eerie synth adds an otherworldly feeling. Nick Diamond croons a song about being reborn on a tropical island, and discovering the joys of being in this beautiful place.

Then they veer into the wonderfully expansive "Humans," which sounds like music-hall piano mixed with a brass band. After that, the band experiments with other kinds of island-folk sounds: bouncy guitar pop, dense folky psychedelica, exotic experimental music, breathless psychedelic rap, and sunny calypso-flavoured pop.

If you ever got shipwrecked on a Caribbean Island with an Elephant 6 band, it might sound -- and feel -- a little like the Islands' debut. Just about any combination of folk, calypso and psychedelica you can imagine will be on "Return to the Sea," done with such polish and confidence that it feels like a band that's been around forever.

Their music is controlled and tight, but with a sunny, giddy little pop edge. They effortlessly mishmash styles (classical and blippy keyboard?), mostly folky, also some dabbles in hip-hop and dense proggy electronica. The songs are seamless meshes of folky guitar, blippy keyboard, buzzing analog synth, swelling violin, kettle drums, and whatever else you can imagine.

Diamond has a rather odd voice -- a little off-key, but still quite pleasant. And he can trip out the slightly morbid lyrics ("Bones, bones/brittle little bones"), written with a flair for description. "Swans sung songs/Till the morning dawned on us/And the sun-smudged peach moon still hung loose..."

The Islands are a pretty new band, but they don't sound like it in their polished debut "Return to the Sea," which sounds like Sufjan Stevens jamming in the Caribbean.

I got the LP over 30 years ago and enjoyed it in monoral sound. I wanted to re-live that enjoyment in stereo or digitally remastered sound, not this time. It's still good. Maybe this TV version musical will be recorded again with a new cast and depth-defying sounds..

5 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Christmas Music.......2007-01-18

In 1956 when The Stingiest Man in Town was broadcast on The Alcoa Hour, my parents loved it so much they bought the record. For my entire childhood this music was loved by all the members of our family. It was our unique Christmas tradition. When my brothers and I were old enough to marry the key question was, who gets The Stingiest Man in Town? When casettes became popular copies were made for all of us - scratches and skips included. We honestly thought we were the only people in the world who knew and loved this wonderful music. In the mid-70's when a cartoon version was made we were pleased that the music was being appreciated by a new generation - but were very disappointed in the quality of the production. Every year I have googled the title just in case - but I was pretty sure our scratchy copy was all we would be able to pass on to our children - who all love it as much as we do. What a shock and a joy to find this wonderful recording this year! The joy on the faces of my mother, brothers, and children when they opened their copies was the best part of this Christmas season. Do yourselves and your families a favor and introduce them to these wonderful songs that do such a wonderful job of reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars The best Christmas drama/musical ever.......2006-12-25

I never saw this on TV -- I was born a year after it debuted. But the album has been in my house since I was a baby. I grew up singing along with the record and can imagine every scene! I'm thrilled that it's finally been released on CD (especially since the record is too worn out to be played). The best tunes and the best acting on a Christmas special ever! The Rankin-Bass version ruined the songs, and the acting wasn't much either. Basil Rathbone and the rest of the cast of this version reign supreme!

5 out of 5 stars The Stingiest Man in Town.......2006-12-13

This is probably the best music I have ever heard and I find it incomprehensible that the world hasn't heard it. As a child, my father brought this tv movie home and we watched it on a sheet in our livingroom. Please, if anyone can tell me how to buy a copy of the movie, I would surely appreciate it. When you hear Johnny Desmond sing "The Birthday Party of the King" tears will come to your eyes. The cast is superb an I can't think of a better way to introduce children to this version of A Christmas carol.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful memories and songs. If only a video survived!.......2006-12-12

I grew up with this music during the holiday's. It is a wonderful combination of inspired actors and songs. Basil Rathbone is a terrific Scrooge (who knew he could sing!?) and The Four Lads as good as any Greek chorus. For many years I'd wander into used record stores just to see if there was a copy of this album only to have record players go the way of the dodo. I do have the album and a record player but they are both well beyond their prime. This is a treat to find available on CD. The animated video does not do the music or story justice. If only a copy of the original 1956 TV special could be found; that would be wonderful!

I've been looking for this CD for years and now I have it

Thanks

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE - CLASSIC PATRICE!!!!!.......2006-02-01

Up until I started hearing her music sampled by Rap and R & B artists in the 90's, I thought that my cousin Cheryl and I were Patrice Rushen's only true fans. I am delighted to see that there are others who appreciate this musical genius and as a teenager in the 80's, Patrice Rushen was one of my musical she-roes! This woman plays many instruments and she also writes, produces, and arranges her own material [which is why she is still around today, working behind the scenes]. She was then, and is now, light years ahead of her musical contemporaries.

Of all of her albums, "Posh" is still my favorite. I can still listen to every song on this album without skipping a track! It is one of the only albums (Yes, I said "Albums"!) that I have a copy of on vinyl, cassette, and now on CD. From beginning to end, the songs on this album blend together beautifully. From the blaring horn intro to "Never Gonna Give You Up" to the concerto-esque opening to "This Is All I Really Know", this album will musically and lyrically take you through all of the emotions of life and love. It is extremely difficult for me to suggest a stand-out song on this album because I love all of these songs. I highly recommend this album to anyone who has ever heard a song with a Patrice Rushen sample in it. (Most recently Kirk Franklin used the Patrice Rushen "Haven't You Heard" sample (from "Pizzazz") for his song Looking For You and Michael Lyttle had the nerve to say the following in his amazon.com review, "One is hard pressed to not remember the Love Unlimited Orchestra when hearing `Looking for You'..." Come on amazon.com! Please give Patrice Rushen her proper credit where credit is due!)

5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2005-05-16

By Patrice's third Elektra release, she had found a genius knack of creating classic R & B songs, and had a unique sound, all her own - a sound that still hasn't been duplicated.

All the songs on "Posh" stand the test of time - each of the eight songs is different and all feature Patrice's various vocal and instrumental powers to great effect.

R&B, funk, soul, gospel, disco, classical, rock ...... you name the genre - everything is here; all within these eight songs.

Patrice's Elektra work is far too important not to be heard.

Anyone with R & B/jazz sensibilites should own at least one Patrice Rushen album - and there's no better place to start than this one! Then go on and buy the rest!!

5 out of 5 stars Boy This Is Nice!.......2004-05-23

As indicated 'Pizzazz' is Patrice Rushen's R&B breackthrough
but she REALLY finds her legs on 'Posh'.The music is solid, the
funk is more muscular and her singing has grown in confidance!
"Never Gonna Give You Up","Don't Blame Me","Look Up!" and the
THUMPASAURUS fonk of "Funk Won't Let You Down" tune down the pop and bring up the grooves even as she rocks out on hard-edged "Time Will Tell" and excersises her piano playing ability in the superbly arranged "The Dream".Patrice Rushen had at last discovered a way to be poppy, soulful, funky AND herself all at once and it wouldn't be very long at all until she parlayed these ideas into a hit-making factory in the pop world!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect album!!!!!.......2004-04-30

I remember this album from back in the early 1980's. I bought in on cassette becuase I heard and loved the song "This Is All I Really Know" on the radio. At the time, I only paid scant attention to the other songs. Of course, the tape wore out and I had trouble tracking down the album. I purchased her greatest hits CD which had a few songs from "Posh" but not "This Is All I Really Know". Finally, someone wised up and put this album out on CD.

"Posh" is a delight from start to finish. The uptempo tunes "Look Up" and "Never Gonna Give You Up" are fun. It is nice to hear dance music which is also great music period. The mid-tempo mover "Don't Blame Me" is a winner as well.
I remember originally not liking "The Funk Won't Let You Down" but now I think it is also a great song.

Of course the ballads are supberb. You can't get much better than "I Need Your Love" and the gospel closer, "This Is All I Really Know". I am not sure if she is singing to God or a person in this song, but you can apply either to the song. I would love to find an arrangement of this and sing it at my church! The piano playing is beautiful as well, especially the introduction. "I Need Your Love" seems like a fairly simple song at first, but has a wonderful, soothing arrangement.

The semi-classical sounding "The Dream" is another wonderous track.

It is really a shame that Ms. Rushen has been relegated to One Hit Wonder status with "Forget Me Nots". It is a great song, but there is so much more to her music. When I tell friends I like Patrice Rushen they usually either say "Who?" or "the lady who sang 'Forget Me Nots'".

This album in particular reminds me of a great period during the late 1970's-early 1980's when some great non-disco/non-rap soul music (Deniece Williams; Brothers Johnson; Champaign, Brenda Russell, Ray Goodman & Brown, George Benson etc)came out. Unfortunately, most people associate soul music from this period with either disco or rap or the more commercial sounds of Lionel Richie or Whitney Houston. Richie and Houston are fine artists, but I find their songs a little too pop/commerical oriented.

Anyway, enough rantings and ravings from me. This album is a gem. Even if you are not that familiar with Patrice Rushen and like Quiet Storm/Smooth Jazz stylings with some uptempo but soothing sounds thrown in, you should enjoy this album! This is good place to get to know Ms. Rushen.

Straight from the Heart has been my introduction to Patrice Rushen. I fist read about her in a Prince fansite. So, curiousity took the best of me and I listened to a few audios in the web. At that point, I decided to search for any of her CDs that I could find. This is the only CD I found in a brick-and-mortar store. Patrice is so talented in many genres like funk, R&B, and jazz. The sweet and silky voice she has is very relaxing and has this aura of confidence.

A great disc from a great musician! Give it a listen! Five stars!!

    5 out of 5 stars THE soul-jazz album.......2006-10-23

One of the most flawless albums of the 80s, Patrice Rushen branches out every which way to make an artistic statement, and passes with flying colors on every count. 80s disco (Forget Me Nots, Breakout!), sensuous balladry (Remind Me, Where There Is Love) and the jazzy instrumental "Number One" tie together for an intoxicating experience that will likely remain fresh 50 years from now.

    5 out of 5 stars Smoothness.......2005-12-21

Patrice Rushen is a genious and this album Straight From The Heart is a must have classic. Of course the unforgettable Forget Me Nots is here but it seems as every song is unforgettable. From All We Need to the magnificent Remind Me to the incredible Where There Is Love, Patrice Rushen keeps the jams comin. And if you REALLY want to jam just put on that Number One, a very great instrumental that keeps you movin. Patrice Rushen was one of the greats that got lost in the shuffle even though her songs are easily recognizable. I'd advise anybody who loves great music to go get this album ASAP! You won't be disappointed trust me! Masterpiece

    4 out of 5 stars 80's revisited.......2005-09-12

I enjoyed this cd to the max! Just took me back to the days when I had the parachute pants, Jheri Curl (Which probably explains my baldness today!), and sported Vans (checkerboard shoes)! Patrice would come on and the block party would go nuts!!!

A collaboration between a Senegalese-French chanteuse and a Spanish-French guitarist may seem unlikely at face value, but the two actually have quite a bit in common. Both traditions share North African roots -- Senegal through its centuries-old link with Islam and Spain via an indelible Moorish tinge that still permeates the nation's culture despite the medieval re-conquest of Granada. Patrice Larose's playing is neat-fingered and unassuming yet rhythmically unfettered, his round-toned, slightly buzzy acoustic guitar makes quicksilver runs between melodic contexts, time-signatures and ports of call. Julia Sarr's silky vocals, while true to her ancestry, are hard to pigeon-hole; she is obviously an open-eared world citizen whose musical vocabulary reflects a life-long immersion in everything from R&B ballads to West African praise-singing. The duo hardly breaks a sweat while shifting between Brazilian bossa nova, French chanson, Spanish flamenco and the mbalax invented by Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour, who sits in on the title track and was the force behind their 2005 Carnegie Hall debut. The album is relaxed and lushly beautiful -- one of those rare must-haves that will never disappoint or grow stale. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Magical Mix of Styles.......2007-01-09

Combine a gorgeous, full-throated voice from Senegal with a French flamenco guitar player and it turns out that you get a warm, musically complex blend of styles that sound like they were made for each other. Sarr's voice has a lot of range, and Larose's guitar work is outstanding. Listen especially for "Nmala DJure," which is the song that got me to buy the album, and for a haunting duet with Youssou N'Dour.

Menotti's masterful orchestrations change texture and color each moment. Castle's moody Baba successfully captures the dark side of her alcoholic hallucinations, while Bedi's artistic and mature Monica sings with country garden gentility, but misses capturing Monica's essence. In the "Black Swan" duet, the haunting lullaby of the damned, Menotti's magical musical lyricism is magnified by their comraderie and close vocal timbres. The Medium is a musical theater piece, dependent upon the interactions of three principal singer/actors, one of whom's a mute whose actions and expressions are intrinsic to the plot's dramatic impact. Without Toby's "voice," the story lacks heart. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

      Album Description

Oft-performed but mysteriously absent on recordings, Menotti's eerie opera The Medium has materialized in its first recording in more than a quarter century. This two-act "musical drama" is about a fake psychic whose surprise encounter with the unknown leads to murder and mayhem. It is staged a dozen times annually in the US alone. Yet, recordings haven't been available for years, and (until now) it has never appeared on CD. A "sensational success" for Menotti (Kobbé's Opera Book), the present version of The Medium had its premiere February 18, 1947 at New York's Heckscher Theater. New York Times music critic Olin Downes wrote, "we have here the quality of opera. It is dramatic music, emphatic in action as well as feeling, and in essence song, which is what opera must be. No other American composer has shown the inborn talent that Mr. Menotti, an Italian by descent, unquestionable possesses for the lyric theater." Critic (and composer) Virgil Thomson called it a "first-class musico-theatrical work . . . the most gripping operatic narrative [he] has witnessed in many a year . . .[It] wrings every heart string, and the music is thoroughly touching." The 1992 Chicago Opera Theater production was the genesis for Cedille's recording. Produced by James Ginsburg and recorded by Grammy award-winning engineer Lawrence Rock, Cedille's The Medium includes sound effects -- gunshots, the cracking of a whip, and more -- to aid the listener's imagination, in the tradition of radio drama. Ginsburg explains, "After the music was recorded, effects were added to emphasize events, gestures, and emotions, and to help create an atmosphere of dramatic immediacy." Scenes involving movement were blocked out and performed before an array of microphones for added realism, Ginsburg says.

4 out of 5 stars an American opera with memorable moments.......2000-01-13

A recent review of the new opera "The Great Gatsby" compared it favorably against other essays in the field that were either "trendy" and devoid of any musical interest to most audiences or both. Although Menotti's short opera has a few (but very few) moments of vocal sterility--although the orchestra always has something interesting to offer us--there are many passages of great lyricism (so lacking in later "operas"). Listen to the haunting duet that ends the first act and try to find anything like it in (say) "Streetcar" or "Lizzie Borden."

We have a very striking recording of this work on Cedille label (CDR 90000 034) with Lawrence Rapchak conducting a top-notch group of five soloists (and one ghost) in what is meant to be (we are told in the notes) a "radio broadcast" version of the work. Alas, one of the great drawbacks is the omnipresence of young Toby who is a mute and therefore invisible on any sound recording; but if you can listen to the "Aida" Triumphal March without seeing the processions, here you can let your imagination supply the boy.

Patrice Michaels Bedi might not catch the last bit of essence of Monica's character; but Joyce Castle certainly comes near to the perfection (though not quite completely matching it) of the original "Baba" of Marie Powers, who can be heard on a soundtrack recording taken from the film version.

Not all the sound effects work perfectly: the doorbell should be much more jarring for one thing. And now and then the microphone placement seems too far from the singers. But the power is there and Cedille is to be thanked for an up to date version of this tale of the charlatan medium who may or may not have made actual contact with the supernatural.

Cedille thoughtfully provides the complete text that is preceded by a list of very generous cut numbers, making it very easy to get to just that part of the opera you wish. However you will not find those numbers in the margins of the text itself, a curious omission.

Oedipus Rex is one of the most remarkable and successful of Stravinsky's "neoclassical" pieces. With text set in Latin, a narrator explains what is about to happen, and invites the audience to observe the action objectively, without becoming emotionally involved. The result is music which has the same monumentality and "spatial" quality as a sculpture garden. Esa-Pekka Salonen has rapidly gained a reputation as one of our finest Stravinsky conductors. Together with his stellar lineup of soloists, he turns in spectacular performance.--David Hurwitz

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Important Stravinsky Work, but not his greatest.......2006-06-20

'Oedipus Rex' by Igor Stravinsky is a short opera with libretto in French which Stravinsky wrote in the mid-1920s, well after he had completed his most important works, the three ballets he did for the Ballet Rousse, especially 'The Rites of Spring'.

This interpretation by Esa-Pekka Salonen is quite good, and it should be especially pleasing to any Stravinsky fans, as the other reviews make clear. It is not, however, an important work if you happen to be checking it out primarily for the performance by Anne Sofie von Otter. Her role as Jocasta, Oedipus' mother, is relatively small, in this short work.

Oddly, I found the work less interesting than the recording of his collected folk songs recorded under the name 'Les Noces' (The Wedding), as this latter performance was more purely a realization of Stravinsky's writing for chorus.

But, if you like Stravinsky, you will not want to miss this work. If you are not fond of Stravinsky, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Most Definitive 'Oedipus Rex' On Record.......2005-09-25

Esa-Pekka Salonen is more attuned to the complexities of this brittle and vibrant Stravinsky oratorio than any other conductor, and despite the fact that this recording dates back to 1992 is still retains the magic he brings to this work. Having heard subsequent performances live of Salonen's way with Oedipus, hearing him grow even more secure with the masses to control, this recording has all of the essentials to make it the choice performance.

The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra may not have the valuable sonic sheen Salonen elicits from the LA Philharmonic, but the playing is responsive and crisp. The cast is superb with Vinson Cole ringingly true as Oedipus and Anne Sofie von Otter as a powerful Jocasta. Patrice Chereau is superb as the Narrator and the cast is rounded out with such luminaries in the opera field as Simon Estes, Nicholai Gedda and Hans Hotter. The choral singing is precise though still in that Swedish manner of straight tone which actually fits this music well.

One can only hope that Salonen will record this work again to demonstrate his current full grasp of a magnificent and too rarely heard Stravinsky masterwork. Grady Harp, September 05

      4 out of 5 stars It's getting a little chilly in here........2005-09-04

I've owned a dozen or more versions of Oedipus Rex over the years, and this one still remains on my shelf. I like Salonen's Stravinsky in general. It follows th composer's preference for chilly, precise, detached articulaiton without sentiment. But in this cast the Oedipus, Vinson Cole, sounds overparted, as does the excellent mezzo, Anne Sofie von Otter. Vocally, the parts of Oedipus and Jocasta are as weighty and florid as anything in early Verdi, and here we have lighter voices trying to carry the dramatic thrust but sounding like fairly polite oratorio singers. I imagine that's deliberate, and the result overall is very musical But for me there has to be more fire in the mix, at least as much opera as oratorio.

      4 out of 5 stars a most sinister gift........2003-11-08

Diaghilev was correct when called this 1927 work by Igor Stravinsky, "a most sinister gift." Everything about it seems wrong: timing; libretto; translation; narration; staging; Italianate vocalisms; the ominous tympani rolls. Its one standout virtue is its simplicity. For those reasons - & more - Oedipus Rex is really an ironic comedy about Stravinsky himself, & quite Mozartian if one is willing to make a character of the composer & laugh at his pretensions as Mozart laughed & as Stravinsky so rarely did.

      Bob Rixon

5 out of 5 stars A crisp and lucid recording of a masterpiece.......2000-06-30

There is not an abundance of modern recordings of this unique work, so I was glad to find one that was as good as this. I came to this piece after falling in love with Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, and I found many of the same things that I loved there in this slightly earlier piece. While I'm not too crazy about Oedipus himself, Anne Sofie van Otter makes a great Jocasta, projecting a very cool image to hide a genuine fear. The demonic mood of "oracula mentitur" is captured especially well. I love the desperation underlying the agressive music.
