Former busker Robert Bradley and his Blackwater Surprise band take a different track on their third outing. Instead of rejuvenating classic soul and R&B-based funk by fusing it with sprawling blues romps, they take a trip to the Temptations' psychedelic shack and bring back some souvenirs. Not only have they added spacey sound samples--the kind that accompanied George Clinton's Mothership on its travels--but they use some contrivances right at hand for an interesting, post-millennial edge. Not since Jane's Addiction's "Got Caught Stealing" has a canine been put to such good use as a percussive instrument as on "Lindy," where a swampy piano, handclaps, and some fuzzy guitar are carried along by a well-trained pooch who barks on the beat. The shimmering "Ride My Wave" approaches trip-hop, as Bradley hypnotically chants in a style that approaches Marvin Gaye at his sensuous best. Bradley and his alternative-rockers still explore rhythms that showcase this grizzled blues singer's emotive mastery, but they've gone a little further afield for inspiration. What's the Blackwater Surprise? That these disparate parts fit so seamlessly. --Jaan Uhelszki

What goes around, comes around. As the resident rock star in Nickel Creek (contrasting with the trio's more reserved Watkins siblings), mandolinist Chris Thile has sent his music soaring in surprising directions from its bluegrass base. Though this solo release finds him dipping into the songbooks of the White Stripes ("Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground") and the Strokes ("Heart in a Cage"), much of the music sticks closer to tradition than Thile has in recent years. Among the highlights are an uptempo romp through Gillian Welch's "Wayside (Back in Time)," a pretty fair yodel on Jimmie Rodgers's "Brakeman's Blues," the close harmonies of the bluesy "If the Sea Was Whiskey," and Thile's original "You're an Angel and I'm Gonna Cry," classic country weeper. Five of the fourteen cuts are instrumental, with the opening "Watch 'at Breakdown" combining bluegrass instrumentation and jazzy sophistication, and "The Beekeeper" giving Thile's fingers a chance to fly. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

This isn't good music. This is the best music. Seriously. It will make your heart full, be prepared. Know ahead of time the possible symptoms so you don't mistake them for a medical condition. You will perceive a swelling in your chest, kind of an ache...but the best possible kind. Your body may move uncontrollably. Do not be afraid, these are common side-affects and should be embraced.
To know this music is to love it. If you know it and don't love it, I have nothing to say to you. Go away!

The lineup of this nationally televised concert, organized by Wynton Marsalis at Jazz at Lincoln Center, ranged from the gospel queen Shirley Caesar to the quiet wunderkind Norah Jones. But the night belonged to the Big Easy's brethren, including the crawfish cadences of Buckwheat Zydeco's "I'm Going to Love You Anyway" and the second line strut of Art and Aaron Neville's "Go to the Mardi Gras." Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield's tearful "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" was dedicated to his missing father. The Jordan family: flutist Kent, violinist Rachel, vocalist Stephanie, and trumpeter Marlon--who was trapped for days on a roof--performed a heartfelt, affirmative rendition of "Here's to Life." Without the Crescent City, American music as we know it does not exist. If enough of you buy this CD, we won't "Know What it Means To Miss New Orleans." --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:

For the past 30 years, Paul Winter has been the foremost exponent of integrating sounds from nature into environmental-themed music to espouse an optimistic kinship with Planet Earth's myriad creatures. Fusing animal callings with jazz, orchestral, and choral arrangements, folk, and world music, Common Ground is a cohesive concept album with more than its share of beautiful music. Winter's mimicry and accompaniment of wolf and whale on soprano sax is eloquent, though the human vocal passages sometimes verge on a sanctimonious folkiness. His "best of" collection, Wolf Eyes (which features various versions of about half of Common Ground's selections), is a more consistent introduction to Winter's distinctive music. --Richard PriceCustomer Reviews:

Ave Maris, Ave Om.......2001-12-20
I first heard this album when I was very, very young, probably two or three years old (I'm 21 now). At various times, the album simply returns to my life, and I'm constantly reawakened to its beauty. It opens with "Ancient Voices," a teriffic song that gradually shifts from African mbira dzavadzimu (sort of an enlargened African marimba) to a mid-tempo shuffle. And the lyrics gently introduce the entire theme of the album ("Ancient voices sing forever, guide me on my way. . . Turning spinning circle ending, Light begins the day"). "Eagle" features McCandless's soaring, sweeping oboe runs echoing the flight and call of an African Fish-Eagle. McCandless is an amazing oboist, as this piece and "Common Ground" highlight-- rare is the occasion when you can say "jazz oboist," but he pulls it off quite nicely. The more Brazilian take on Ralph Towner's "Icarus" (a Winter Consort stable) is quite lovely; this is my particular favorite arrangement, slightly ahead of the original. "The Promise Of A Fisherman (Iemanja)" is teriffic, a slow, majestic chant to the Candomble goddess set against frantic, rhythmic percussion; a very nice juxtaposition. And the song is a brilliant segue into the album's centerpiece, the wondrous "Ocean Dream." This is my favorite song on the album, an ode to the mysterious, beautiful creature, the whale (specifically, the humpback whale, whose call is heard throughout the song). What is so amazing about this song is, the chords and melody are based around the whalesongs, they're singing to the whales, and almost vice versa. The lyrics echo the childlike fascination and wonder Winter seems to hold for these creatures-- "Ocean child, come now home, holy wonder, wholly one; Ancient song, call me home, ave maris, ave om." And the song ends with Winter's soprano sax echoing the whale's calls. Beautiful. "Trio" represents the human side of the whale/eagle/wolf trio, later echoed on the final song, "Trilogy." It's a very subtle conclusion to the first side, and a nice short afterthought following "Ocean Dream."
Side Two opens with the rousing "Common Ground," an uplifting, spiritual piece with some teriffic solos and a thunderous Steve Gadd rhythm. Once again, the oboe solo in the middle of the song is absolutely breathtaking. Calming down a little bit, the next piece is the ethereal, soul-clensing "Lay Down Your Burden." Susan Osborne's voice is so emotional, and the song is so captivating, it draws you in and gently releases you at the song's conclusion. The best line, in my opinion, is "Sing with the choirs that surround you, and dance to the music in your soul; Look into the eyes that really see you; Place all that you have into that bowl." It's a call to one's soul, to be willing to sacrifice all and go with your own spirit. I love that idea. "Wolf Eyes" is a rather sad piece, very intriguing since generally, in pop culture, wolves are regarded as rather fierce, canniving creatures (this was before "Never Cry Wolf" and the incessant early-90's Disney G-rated Alaskan wildlife family adventures of course); here, the wolf is almost pitied, as the poem in the sleeve notes seems to emphasize ("The wolf had amber eyes/That stared out/The back of a station wagon"). And then, the most spine-tingling moment of the album, "Duet," a music duet between wolf and saxophone recorded live in the Village. It's just incredible (and additionally, showcases Winter's remarkable sense of pitch!). A reprise of "Minuit (Midnight)," first heard on the ICARUS album, is almost better, primarily for the addition of Osborne's "Midnight has come, I hear music, and I keep on singing" chant featured at the end of the piece. The album ends with Trilogy, blending the three animal voices together (remarkably, they were all in the same key), with but one organ note. An amazing ending to an amazing album.
This is my favorite Paul Winter album. Others worth hearing, especially if you enjoy this release (and I surely hope you do), include ICARUS, CANYON, and EARTH: VOICES OF A PLANET. All of his works either expand or follow the themes presented on this album, but in my opinion, it was with COMMON GROUND that Winter fused them best. A Must Own.
A BEAUTIFUL, CLASSIC RECORDING.......2001-11-28
Cutting his teeth in jazz, and combining his seemingly endless talent and imagination with his love of the earth and its inhabitants -- human and animal alike -- Winter has, over the years, consistently produced melodic, interesting albums that are challenging and comfortable at the same time. Always surrounding himself with stellar musicians -- a cast that has changed over the years, always first-rate -- he has continuously managed to transform his vision and emotion into some of the finest music of our age.
The ultimate tool that has allowed him to maintain his integrity is, I believe, his honesty. There is absolutely no element of pretense in his art -- he feels strongly and deeply about what he's doing, and it's present in every note. He combines various styles of ethnic music from around the world -- African, Brazilian, Native American and more -- with elements of jazz and classical music and sounds from nature (the wolf, the eagle, the whale) into a mix that comes together in such a way as to be seamless. It's as if they were made to fit together -- an audio metaphor for how we should live with each other and with the planet.
There is a comfort and serenity to this music -- and there is joy and rhythm and life. It's almost like a celebratory prayer -- a prayer of thanks for what we've been given in the form of the natural world and its peoples, and a prayer of hope that we don't throw it all away. It's a breathtakingly beautiful, stunning document.
The Paul Winter Rosetta Stone.......2000-11-23
"Common Ground" is a transitional album, made in 1977 after the original Paul Winter Consort, due to "artistic differences," split into Oregon (Paul McCandless, Collin Walcott, Ralph Towner and Glenn Moore) and the later Paul Winter Consort that was to begin with his "Callings" album in 1980. Produced over a full summer's worth of creative activity, it features artists from both the old group (McCandless, David Darling, Janet Johnson) and the Consort of the "future" (Susan Osborn, Oscar Castro-Neves, Jim Scott, Steve Gadd and others). It is the Rosetta Stone, the "connective tissue," if you like, to these two rather disparate groups.
A few of the pieces here ("Icarus," "Minuit") are Paul Winter Consort cornerstones that have stood the test of time and transmogrification, still as fresh today as they were more than 25 years ago. The opening track, "Ancient Voices," is a collaboration with Paul Berliner, based on the latter's "Nhmamusasa" that appears on his "Zimbabwe: The Soul of Mbira" album, an early foray of Winter's into world music that continues to this day with Arto Tunchoyaciyan. There are a few tracks ("Eagle," "Common Ground") where Paul McCandless soars on oboe as only he can. His riffs on "Common Ground" simply have to be heard to be believed. "The Promise of a Fisherman" ("Iemanja"), an Afro-Brazilian chant, which was to later find a very comfortable home in Winter's "Missa Gaia" (Earth Mass), features lyrics by Ivan Lins, one of the early founders (with Castro-Neves and Winter) of the Bossa Nova movement.
But there is one overriding, compelling reason for my writing about this album, and that is the introduction of Susan Osborn as a vocalist to be reckoned with. Susan's "Lay Down Your Burden" (with Castro-Neves on Rodgers touring organ) is a blues/gospel classic. On this track, Oscar lays down his own blues chords which, quite frankly, are some of the best I've ever heard. And Susan's voice simply knocked me sideways.
I expect that Susan will have the same effect on you. Now, isn't that reason enough for you to get this classic album?

Album Description
Saxon are dyed-in-the-wool musicians, legends of heavy metal. This British band kept holding up the Saxon banner even in times of a galloping metal recession and dwindling sales figures. Whenever frontman Biff Byford struts across the stage with flying hair, fringed leather jacket and a grumpy expression, his fans go into raptures. "You fucking people should go home," comments Biff frequently with feigned anger on the regular ´encore` demands voiced by his audience, while enjoying their enthusiasm with obvious delight. Byford and his four comrades-in-arms Paul Quinn, Doug Scarrat, Nibbs Carter and Fritz Randow may be certain of this enthusiasm once their highly impressive new album KILLING GROUND arrives, which is set not only to delight the band's faithful supporters but should also attract a new audience.Customer Reviews:
"Forged from purest metal".......2005-05-06
Killing Ground begins with a 1:36 intro with battlefield sounds and a slow, rich guitar instrumental. The title track opens with a heavy, Metallica-esque guitar riff. It is a power rocker with excellent vocals and unique guitar and bass work at the bridge. "Court of the Crimson King" offers a progressive sound. The 6:00 track sounds like something that, well, King Crimson would do. I can almost hear John Wetton singing this interesting epic. It is complex with a lot of depth. "Coming Home" is one of the more accessible numbers here. It is a little repetitive but catchy. I can't help but sing along to the chorus. The lyrics are about lonely life on the road. It has a classic rock sound. "Hell Freezes Over" is my favorite. The opening riff which continues through the verses really grabs the listener. It rocks! Nothing fancy here, just awesome guitar with addictive hooks. It is followed by the straight-ahead, driving metal track "Dragons Lair."
The second half of the CD is not as stellar as the first. "You Don't Know What You've Got" has a cliché for a chorus. OK, so does "Hell Freezes Over" but this track is not a stand-out. "Deeds of Glory" has that characteristic Saxon anthem-like sound with hero imagery. "Running for the Border" is another straight rock track but again, is unremarkable. My interest was sparked again by the 6:15 metal work of art "Shadows on the Wall." It is about the nuclear age from the Manhattan Project bomb testing in Los Alamos to the dropping of the Atomic Bomb from an American B-29 named Enola Gay on Hiroshima, Japan. Poignant line: "Where is the city, where are the people? There's only shadows on the wall." The line refers to the phenomenon that occurred when people and objects vaporized in the explosion left their shadows imprinted on walls. The line "Split the tiny atom, Your little boy" refers to the nickname of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima killing 100,000 instantly and dooming 100,00 more to death by injury or radiation poisoning. I always like it when history is used in metal as metal bands usually do such a good job honoring such events, and "Shadows" is no exception. It is a powerful track; slow and melodic at times and then an exploding metal track with distorted vocals followed by the anthem-like chorus. Killing Ground ends with the killer "Rock is Our Life" that is a characteristic Saxon rock rules anthem. Great guitar. Killing Ground is not as solid as some of Saxon's other releases as it tapers off a bit during the first part of the second half, but it is still an excellent album. The CD booklet offers lyrics and a couple of photos of the aging band (ugh! Maybe they should forgo the photos . . . just kidding). No matter their age, these guys can rock!! I highly recommend Killing Ground and even more highly recommend their latest release Lionheart.
saxon are back to their roots.......2004-05-19
Classic Saxon!.......2004-05-13
One of Saxon's strong suits, and frankly it slays me why their popularity has have exploded in the US, is that they bring so much energy to their music, both recorded and live. Saxon is not power metal, but a majestic hybrid mixture of positive powerful hard rock and heavy metal. Their song writing and music have matured and evolved exponentially in the last 30 years to hard rock perfection; what heavy music should engender.
Biff Byford has the quintassential "majestic" rock voice, and I swear it sounds as good here on Killing Ground as it did on the first album I bought, "Denim & Leather." What appeals to me on this album (in my advancing age along with Saxon) are the addition of some groove oriented rockers that move along at the 4/4 time pace, and simply burn an indelible image. The guitars on this album by Doug and Paul are not as much in your face as in younger days, and support the song structures very effectively. The grinding and pumping riffage, and soloing is still there, but appropriately and tastefully so. My favorite songs here are "Coming Home," "Hell Freezes Over," "You Don't Know What You've Got" and "Deeds of Glory." A special favorite, living in Southern California, is "Running For The Border," with numerous references to Mexico (these guys are from England, and rarely, if ever, make it west of the Mississippi....hilarious!).
I know that time will eventually take these guys away, but they are just so good that I hope they NEVER retire! I wish they could get their asses to CA for a concert some day; they'd be surprised at the turnout!
An Underrated Gem.......2003-12-01
this is a great starting point for new fans and a must for any Saxon die-hard. check out Heavy Metal Thunder as well, an excellent set of classic Saxon songs re-recorded with the current lineup.
Incredible !!.......2003-09-03
So, soon after the gig I bought KILLING GROUND (the limited edition). Man, what a job! Giving sequence to their last great albums UNLEASH THE BEAST and METALHEAD, this one here is breathtaking. The quality of production is just the best. The second CD featuring old classics re-recorded is also majestic.
SAXON is a phenomenon. They lost their way in the eighties, trying to adapt their sound to radio and America, but they failed. Since then, it has been a long road back to their metal best, including fighting in court with ex-members Dawnson and Oliver. They are doing it, they are successfull again, even in this environment totally opposite to metal. Also, SAXON has an easily recognizable style, but they manage to do it with a different touch in every album, unlike, for example, Iron Maiden or AC/DC.
KILLING GROUND is a fantastic rock album, simple as it.

35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.
"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.
Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.
In my 700+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.

The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05
It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.
I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.
Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.
My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.
For those who love the music.......2003-11-29

At Least Three Feet Off The Ground!.......2000-11-09
This album has some of everything on it--blues, jazz, gospel, and even a little country flavor in the title track. (Check out the sound clip of that track!) The sound quality of the CD is superb, and every song is played with real feeling for the roots of the music. I've come to love the Hammond B3 (and there's plenty of B3 on "Three Feet Off The Ground" ), primarily because of Bruce's playing...what a great instrument it is when played by someone with Bruce's flair, skill and feel for it. This CD also includes the great Duke Robillard on two tracks, and Bruce Katz wrote the liner notes himself, which I find very refreshing.
Living in the Boston area as I do, I get to hear the Bruce Katz Band relatively often--in fact, I never miss them if I can help it! So I can tell you that they are truly outstanding, both on their CDs and in their live performances--there just isn't a more exciting group around. They never play a song the same way twice because they're good enough to be able to do anything they want to with a song on the spur of the moment, and "Three Feet Off The Ground" reflects their spontaneity and inventiveness. They tour often, so if you have an opportunity to see the Bruce Katz Band in your area, don't miss them! They will definitely leave you feeling at least "Three Feet Off The Ground!"
