If your taste for funk leans to the obscure and the profound, go no further than this retrospective 2 CD set of Funkadelic's singles from their formative days on Detroit's Westbound label. It's basically a compendium of every Funkadelic single and B-side released from 1968-1976. None of these singles nicked the R&B Top 10--in fact, Funkadelic was so far ahead of its time, most of these tracks never charted at radio, but became staples of the group's live show. Sound quality is raw on a program including slices of acid-crazed black psychedelia, including some stellar gems. Original single edits of "Cosmic Slop," "Standing on the Verge of Getting It On," and "Red Hot Mama" will make you long for the extended album versions. Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

LIVE IN CONCERT .......2005-05-18

I had the honor of seeing Floyd play live in concert at the Indian fair in Oklahoma with my aunt. It was an experience and a huge honor to meet him and shake his hand. His music is very powerful and sends many political messages out. I love his music and actually had them on cassette tape. I finally found this on CD and am very excited to get it. For those who do not understand his music...it's and Indian thing..you wouldn't understand....ayyyee!!

Great music--one missing song.......2003-01-25

This is great music by Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, an American Indian singer-songwriter. Westerman's musical style is influenced mostly by folk and country performers, including his friend Kris Kristofferson. The songs are great, whether you are an activist or just a music lover.

This CD includes remakes of songs from Westerman's two albums: "Custer Died For Your Sins" from 1969 and "The Land is Your Mother" from somewhere around 1980. Though it is a remake, and Red Crow is older, he still sounds good. Like another reviewer, I'd still prefer the originals, but not by much. For some reason, the order of the songs is different from the original "Custer..." album, which can be distracting if you've heard the original many times, but isn't a big deal.

The bigger problem with this CD, and the reason I don't give it 5 stars, is that one song is missing. The original "Land is Your Mother" album included a song called "Bring Me to My Knees". It was one of my favorites on the album and I don't know why it was left out. Other than this one substantial oversight, this is a great CD, one I highly recommend.

rolling with Red Crow.......2000-11-24

Man, just to see the cover of the original album in CD-size is a trip... my pal in NYC gave me a vinyl copy of the original 1969 "Custer Died...," an album that still burns (as the previous reviewer Mr. Nakajima noted so accurately) with the Sacred Fire of hundreds of years of the White Man's oppression. Floyd (real name Red Crow) has written some timeless songs, all right... the 1st half of this CD is a remake (in its entirety) of the original LP, which Red Crow may not even have the copyrights to anymore (don't forget what the music business was like back then, with artists getting ripped off every second). John Prine (an equally as brilliant American Songwriter) just did the same thing with some of his older chestnuts, re-recording them for his new CD "Souvenirs," because (unbelievably) he doesn't own the rights to the original versions! Of his own songs! Atrocious... he (and any other songwriter who's been raped by the industry of their songs) should have some recourse; unfortunately re-doing the songs seems to be the only way.

But no worries... the re-makes are awesome in their own right because, as with Prine, Red Crow has lived inside these songs for decades and knows how to make 'em happen, you know? Guess what, I like some of the re-makes BETTER than the originals, especially "Here Come the Anthros" and "Missionaries." Floyd is top-drawer because he takes the country-ish, pedal-steel idiom (itself the cultural terrain of Whitey) and turns it in on itself, writing almost exclusively about how the White Man completely destroyed his people and, well, much of the world in general. Kinda like a cross between Johnny Cash and Chief Seattle.

The 2nd half of the CD is Floyd's other album, "The Land is Your Mother," which sounds like it was done in the early-to-mid 1970s (his voice sounds closer to the original "Custer..," while the re-done version has him older and in deeper, raspier, more wizened voice). Standouts are many: nice Traditional Native tunes, the "B.I.A." blues, and a song in which Floyd asks us, "How long have you been blind? I've been counting a long, long time...". My favorite so far is "Quiet Desperation," a ballad about an Indian leaving the Big City he doesn't understand to return to the Land. Overall I'd say get this CD and anything else you can dig up on the legendary Red Crow, who many of you may know from his acting adventures in "Dances with Wolves" and one particularly wild 3-part episode of "The X-Files". Maybe someday even the original "Custer Died for Your Sins" will be reissued, who knows?....

Excellent, though not as powerful as the original.......2000-08-08

If you've heard the 1969 version of "Custer" than you may be disappointed. Westerman sounds a little downbeat compared with the fiery AIM/Alcatraz sort of spirit of the original. But, don't walk away yet! This is a terrific batch of recordings. And if "Custer" isn't as good, "La Tierra es Tu Madre" is a wonderful recording. Take a listen.

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

If your taste for funk leans to the obscure and the profound, go no further than this retrospective 2 CD set of Funkadelic's singles from their formative days on Detroit's Westbound label. It's basically a compendium of every Funkadelic single and B-side released from 1968-1976. None of these singles nicked the R&B Top 10--in fact, Funkadelic was so far ahead of its time, most of these tracks never charted at radio, but became staples of the group's live show. Sound quality is raw on a program including slices of acid-crazed black psychedelia, including some stellar gems. Original single edits of "Cosmic Slop," "Standing on the Verge of Getting It On," and "Red Hot Mama" will make you long for the extended album versions. Yet as an overview of this groundbreaking band, this is a great place to start. --Tom Vickers

Wonderful Collection For a Funkhead.......2006-09-06

This compilation is great! When I purchaed this CD, I just listened over and over and....This is a good CD to have in you collection when you just want to "Funkout" and not jump up and change from CD to Cd. This is good for the novice of funk who wants to get funked but too afraid to go deep. One of my favorites is "I Miss My Baby" written by Fuzzy Haskins. Over the years I understand that Fuzzy is a great guitar player. he should have gotten up there with Billy, Tawl, Tiki and the late Great Eddie Hazel! I can imagine how much more the Parliaments would have shined if they had more say---But this CD...

There's so many great tracks on "Music for Your Mother" that you're father might kick the cat across the room.

The holiest of grails for anyone who digs on psychedelic funk music. In many ways, George, Eddie, Bootsy, Bernie and the boys created the blueprint for this indulgent sub-genre in the early 70's. Music like this will never ever be replicated because the sound and themes are influenced so heavily by the times, because the all too obvious, sorry state of music today, and because in the end it would be impossible.

Of course, all of Funkadelic's genius is not contained on just these 2 discs and the one drawback is that many of their epic extended jams are edited down from their original form. But if you're looking for the quickest, cheapest and smartest way to get your hands on the most Funkadelic music you can because you just dug on "Mothership Connection" or "Cosmic Slop" for the first time - Look no further. And don't be stupid and look anywhere else. You found it man.

("Biological Speculation" is worth the price of admission on it's own!)

Not for the Casual/New Listener, but overall still Essential.......2004-07-06

There are a great many albums out there by one of the 70's finest funk bands "Funkadelic", but for those maybe looking to pick up a 'Best of', or a compilation to easily summarise the band, there are a bewildering array of compilations & best of's.....for this band, that will leave all but the most determined, confused & disoriented by the whole thing.

Firstly if you are new to the whole Funkadelic (or even Parliament) sound, then you should stop reading this review, and make your way over to the reviews for "The Very Best of Funkadelic" for a no-frills compilation of their most recognised work, that although uneventful (in terms of surprises) is solid nonetheless. Those that know their "One Nation under a Groove" from their "Maggot Brain", and consider themselves either (a) highly interested in Funkadelic's work, or (B) A Funkadelic enthusiast.....will love this exhausting 2 C-d of A- sides / B-Sides and non album cuts and sublime instrumentals.

Instrumentals of a couple of the major / Strongest tracks ("Music for your mother, I wanna know if it's good to you?"), emphasises how sonically sound the instrumentation of Funkadelics work is, and it's a truly fantastic addition, although oddly it follows the Vocal tracks, rather than being placed further down the album but their inclusion is inspired. If you thought Funkadelic's work was strange at the best of times, then this collection of A+ and Oddball material, will make you strengthen that decision. With the oddball tracktitles giving some indication of the weirdness abound (Better by the Pound?, Biological Speculation??, Vital juices??), but the performances on most of the material begs the question "Why wasn't these titles given more prominence on the studio albums", as the Celebratory, Carefree and Playful lyric/performance dynamic that characterizes their work is so obviously in evidence here. None more so then "I Bet you", a stunningly loose grooved Soul-shouter that was one of the highlights on their debut album ("Funkadelic"), and only featured on a couple of compilations, and begs the question.....Why???, It is (for me) quite possibly one of the best tracks on this collection, yet it barely made it onto more than 1 studio albums, and a couple of 'best of's, yet some of the more well known stuff, makes it virtually on all the funkadelic collections.

And it's those that are interested in hearing some of the more obscure or little known tracks that will truly delight in this release. As it contains a lot of material that didn't make most funkadelic compilations or was deemed too outlandish for mainstream listeners that causally liked Funkadelic. This is most definitely geared towards a more hardcore audience, the chances are that a lot of people won't even be familiar with a lot of the material. Admittedly I'm a relatively new listener to their sound, but the quality of material here, bears up under close scrutiny and proves that some of the B-side material, could have (quite rightly), made A-side status. But again it must be reiterated that this is not for those with a causal or new interest in Funkadelic's work, for something a little more accessible try the aforementioned "The Very best of Funkadelic", or even better try the definitive "Motor City Madness: The Ultimate Collection" for virtually all the hits and listener favourites. But for those that may have these compilations (or several of the studio albums), the next logical step would unquestionably be this remarkable offering.........essential stuff!!!

Primer for new Funkateers.......2003-06-29

If your P-Funk knowledge starts somewhere around "Atomic Dog" and you want to learn more, this collection is an excellent start. A collection of singles from the band's early years on Westbound Records, these are 33 tracks of hardcore, unadulterated funk. "Cosmic Slop" is filled with gloomy lyrics, wailing vocals and a dark, menacing bassline that will force your head to bob rhythmically while you recite the chorus: "Would you like to dance with me we're doing the Cosmic Slop." The title hides the song's content: a son telling of the struggle his mother faced raising her children. Very intense. Some of the other songs to look for are fast paced "Red Hot Mama," "The Undisco Kid," which playfully pokes fun at the disco craze, the introspective "How Do Yew View Yew," These last two songs round out the double CD and show the beginnings of the cleaner funk sound that developed later in the decade. "Music For My Mother" is a great diversion into the blues, complete with some fine harmonica playing and their customarily excellent basslines and percussion. 33 tracks, all classics. If you are even remotely interested in Funk, buy this set.

Don't buy this as a best of....it's all the westbound singles (a 7" vinyl boxset would be nice) so some tracks are edited from the LP version. And then there's the non LP tracks like the amazing "Fish Chips and Sweat", and unreleased "...Can't shake loose" and its brilliant B-side instrumental. I actually prefer the "I'll Bet You" mix from the LP version....sounds better, may be in mono. The later LP edits aren't as good though, "Lets Take It To The Stage" takes away the good rude bits, as does "Red Hot Mama". I'd buy selected LP's first, then get this. Excellent liner notes included.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

Definitly one of my favorite classical CD's....has a bit of everything, and it's all extremely well played and recognizable. I never go on car trips without it with me. If you buy only one classic CD (set), THIS IS IT!
