There's music for Saturday night, and there's music for Sunday morning. The late Sam Cooke made music for both days and, in fact, every day of the week. Cooke was blessed with a fluid, emotionally resonant tone and a graceful, effortless élan, and his legacy has only grown over the years, in spite of his violent death under mysterious circumstances in 1964. Keep Movin' On not only keeps Cooke's flame burning but turns it up a notch, including 23 tracks, 21 of which have not been available to the public for many years. Most songs on this album (many of which were written and produced by Cooke) come from the latter part of his career, and the title track, a finger-popping and soulful stroll, was recorded a month before Cooke's death. Featuring extensive liner notes by noted writer Peter Guralnick, Keep Movin' On features such Cooke classics as "Another Saturday Night" and "A Change Is Gonna Come," along with a hip-swiveling cover of "Tennessee Waltz" and the elated "Yeah Man," whose melody became Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music." In this era of neo-soul, it's often rewarding to go back to the source, and given the wealth of great music for which Cooke's sophisticated passion was a source, this collection is a must. --Amy Linden
