Frankly, it feels a bit weird to listen to Edith Piaf perform in English. There aren't many singers so associated with a country as Piaf is with France. And yet she did record some of her hits in English in an attempt to facilitate her career in the United States. While newcomers to the singer's oeuvre should start with her French albums, this CD is fascinating for advanced Piaf listeners. Most of the sides were cut 1950 and show Piaf in fine vocal form on tracks such as "La vie en rose" (she switched from English to French for the title) and "Autumn Leaves" ("Les feuilles mortes"), a strangely compelling hybrid that alternates between French and English. Piaf was certainly more at ease singing in French, but her charismatic sense of drama could break through in just about any language. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

All of Edith in English...I prefer the French of course, but hearing her in English at least give me some base of what the songs mean...plus her accent is precious...what a wonderfully talented voice...heartbreaking!!

What an unbelievable surprise - and joy - to discover Edith Piaf singing in English, and sometimes songs which she never sang in French! Her accent is ten times worse than mine... but the voice remains, outstanding!

I think Edith Piaf was one of the world's great chanteuses. However, she loses a lot in translation. Whereas her songs in French are effective, touching and powerful, in English they are somewhat bland. Perhaps this has to do with the translations which almost always water down the French. Perhaps it is because her command of English is not great. In any case, for the REAL Piaf, buy anything she recorded in French--you will be transported.

This is a nice enough album. I think she sounds a lot nicer in French, but some of these songs are fun, and if you have enjoyed some of her original music and been curious what they might mean in English, this is one way to get a sense of them. Of course, it would be nicer if all the albums came with liner pages of lyrics but they don't. (Edith Piaf sings clearly enough in French that even an amateur language scholar can try to follow the songs by ear however.) I bought this album when I bought "The Voice of the Sparrow," and while I like that one a lot better, and can listen to it more, this one is handy to have. If you do like lyrics in translation, you might also like to check out the music of Joni James and Nana Mouskoura. Their voices are very different from hers, but the multi-lingual aspect is fun.

I am a huge Elvis fan, especially his love songs and gospel music. This CD is excellent and is a very comprehensive collection of his love songs. Even songs that were made famous by other artists, are sung well by him. His renditions are a pleasure to listen to. There is only one Elvis!

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

What can you say about this musical genius. Every song he sang in his career, was a hit. I loved him from the first time I heard him sing "How Deep Is The Ocean", 'Moonlight In Vermont', and other songs that are well linked with my life and mariage of nearly 49 years.I have all of his music in one form or another and reccomend this double treasure to anyone who wants a good Sinatra album/s. It has most of the songs that will get to your heartstrings...I Love it.

Bought this cd for my boyfriend because he loves frank, and he was so excited not only because it was his greatest love songs, but there were tracks on the cd that sinatra sang to that he had never heard before. Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02

Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!

This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

Another favorite is "(IT LOOKS LIKE)I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN", how many of us have felt that way once or twice in our lives, Tom gives a haunting rendition that stays with you. A very big hit for Eddie Fisher was "WITH THESE HANDS", and "I'll never let you go and I will sing to you", Tom gives one of his best performances. With "HELLO YOUNG LOVERS", he swings lightly with a Nelson Riddle arrangement. This Victor Young composition"WHEN I FALL IN LOVE", is the classic Nat "King" Cole hit from a long running career of standards that made us feel every word. Just "HELP YOURSELF", to my lips and my arms, then let's really start to live...this says it all. Love is the thing that the whole wide world needs plenty of "WITHOUT LOVE(THERE IS NOTHING)", words to live by, specially in these trying times. You are my reason to live, all I own I would give as Tom sings "TILL", from the Roger Williams Songbook, as we look back to the '50s...Mr. Jones sings this from the heart, just in time for Valentines Day.

My own personal stand outs are "MY FOOLISH HEART", another Victor Young composition with lyrics from Ned Washington, the night is like a lovely tune, beware my foolish heart...there's a line between love and fascination...the words grab you immediately, and Tom carefully sets the stage for each syllable. One can reach into the Tom Jones bag of hits and close this review with "LOVE ME TONIGHT", lyrics rise like smoke in the night with "please let my stay, don't send me away, hold me now my heart is breaking, something is burning inside and cannot be denied"...Tom ends this on a high note and holds the same for almost 15 seconds...it could have been longer, gotta love it!

Hip-O has outdone itself with the help of some talented people Bill Levenson (producer), Pat Lawrence & Dana Smart (executive producers), Ellen Fitton (mastered by)...and of course the man who stole our hearts and gave so much of himself...TOM JONES!

In 1975 a song stayed with me right up to this very day...the song was "YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL", the Billy Preston/Bruce Fisher tune, the lyrics, melody and the raspy voice performance by Joe Cocker is truly beautiful. Then in 1982 another tune came my way, lovingly remastered on this album, is a must have for seventies rock fans a rare song from "An Officer and a Gentleman", this duet featuring Jennifer Warnes and Cocker is "UP WHERE WE BELONG", a definitive cue from the career of a wonderful performer. A major stand out for blues/gospel fans is "IF I LOVE YOU", has the love of a born again christian theme. Now Joe is mainly known for rock and soul, but listen to "THE JEALOUS KIND", blues beat with a blend of reggae counter beats.

However there are many highlights ~ "A SONG FOR YOU", a Leon Russell song, taps once again Cocker's ability into the world of gospel ~ "SORRY SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST WORD", opening with Deric Dyer on saxophone, this Elton John song has grit and plenty of it ~ "OUT OF THE BLUE", as we reach into our hearts, this tune pours all the love one has for each other, heartfelt lyrics flow from the Cocker interpretation.

Hip-O Records, Bill Levenson (producer), Pat Lawrence & Dana Smart (executive producers) and the musicians who backed and performed with Joe Cocker...this album is truly a love of people, brought to us through music, gotta love it!

This CD offers some of Jim's greatest love songs. But, why purchase a CD that only limits Jim's talent. His best (CD's) to date is The 50th Anniversary Collection, The Definitive Collection. And if it is ever released on CD The Faces I've Been album would be the icing in any Croce collection. By the way for the record. Jim Croce did not die in a helicopter crash. It was a small plane. I love Jim Croce,But I fill like he never gets the respect now that he got back then. He died the same way the great Stevie Ray Vaughan did, They died in a heliocopter crash,But to me,when croce died, almost everybody forgot about him. I fill like he never got any monuments dedicated to him and what he did in his life.I know that I am probably babbling over nothing,but it just that I love him and his music that changed my life forever.I don't even know how old he was when he died,I don't even know where his heliocopter crashed at or what year!

The Dramatics should rightfully be considered one of the best R&B vocal groups EVER!!! The vocal interplay of LJ Reynolds and Ron Banks is even better than Ruffin and Kendricks. The Dramatics are another group often overlooked because they bounced around several labels and were overshadowed by the Motown machine. This album showcases the Dramatics at their best...singing stone cold slow songs that have aged incredibly well. In my opinion only one other R&B group has the sheer volume of quality slow songs as the Dramatics (The Isley Bros.). Be My Girl is a classic, so is In the Rain, so is Just Shopping, etc. Once you buy this you'll definitely want to pick up vol.2 of their love songs which showcases some of their less known cuts. The scary thing is vol.2 surprised me. It was just as good, which gives the Dramatics 30 amazingly beautiful slow jams. How many groups in any genre of music can say that?
Yo Kanye West/Twista how could you leave the Dramatics out of the list of artists you mention in your hit song? Joking....

When I was a kid growing up in Detroit, the fellas and I would blow harmony on the street corner to the cuts the Dramatics had recorded. Songs like In The Rain, Door To Your Heart, Just Shopping (Not Buying Anything), I Can't Get Over You, Be My Girl, and Stop Your Weeping just to name a few, were songs we wore out listening to and singing. However, a complete CD of all the drama the Dramatics displayed must include this CD, and other hits such as Toast to a fool, Whatcha see is whatcha get, Fell for you, Get up get down, Thank you for your love, Hey You! get off my mountain, And I panicked, I dedicate my life to you, You're fooling you, Finger fever, Shake it well, Now you got me loving you, Beautiful people, Say the word, Never let you go, Somewhere in time, One love ago, When love is over, Trying to get over losing you, I cried all the way home, Me, myself and I, Good things don't come easy, I get carried away, I was the life of the party, After this dance, Don't make me no promises, Choosing up on you, Tune up, I'm in love (Dells/ Dramatics), and last but not least, Love is missing from our lives (Dells/Dramatics). ...it is literally jam packed. Each cut is a delicious serving of reeaaal R & Bee balladry! It has what I consider one of the Top Ten all time Greatest--I say Greatest!--Soul/R & Bee Vocal Ballads ever done! The great "Be My Girl" penned by Michael Henderson. But that's the last track on this collection. Which means unless you cheat and skip tracks, you have to WAIT TO HEAR IT....but worry not, y'all. You will better off playing it in sequence in its entirety. It has that "I'll put a hold on your check" catchline used in many a brother's 2 AM club rap (follow me, now) and the beggin' LJ Reynolds goin' into "aw, baaaa-bee, please, babybabybaby, please" vocal overdrive in the perfect "I Can't Get Over You"...it has another classic and perfect tune "Welcome Back Home". Why are you wasting time readin' this? You're missing out on a great, great CD....
