In a promising filmmaking debut, young BYU grad Jared Hess informs this indie tale of an aggressively nerdy backwater teen's foibles with the bittersweet dimensions of the director's own small-town upbringing, making it the dry comic hit of Sundance. Its soundtrack picks up on that earnest awkwardness via dollops of '80s new wave, both underexposed (Yaz's "Only You", Alphaville's "Forever Young") and otherwise (Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy," a faithful cover of "Time After Time" by Sparklemotion), as well as moodier contemporary cuts by Rogue Wave (a live take on "Every Moment"), Figurine in full synth-pop revivalist mode, and the nuevo-soul of Jamiroquai and Money Mark. Interspersed with a generous sampling of dialogue snippets, John Swihart's shrewd, intimate underscore runs the gamut from "The A-Team Theme" to geek-friendly exotica and nervous cocktail jazz, stitching the score's disparate parts into a memorably quirky whole. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars missing my favorite tune!.......2007-03-29

This is a good album. But I give it three stars because it's missing THE best song on the soundtrack, a beautiful acoustic guitar piece with a Irish folk lilt that plays just before the end of the film. Why the producers would leave this gem out is beyond me. I would have replaced "I want Candy", which everyone's heard a million times, for this one any day.

4 out of 5 stars Unique, fun.......2007-02-24

Do you like unique, fun, stupid funny? We do...and this really delivers - fantastic nostalgia for Napoleon Dynamite movie lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Just like watching the movie.......2006-11-13

This is a great sound track. It includes bits of dialogue from the movie between songs. As a bonus, there are several songs/dialogue bits that were deleted from the final cut of the film. My only beef is that many songs are not in the order they appear in the film. Be warned...the last track is handled just like in the movie, so you sit through 30 seconds or so of silence, and then there is a final bit from the movie.

1 out of 5 stars What!?? Are you kidding me?! The Main Title Song Is MISSING!!.......2006-09-20

Am I the only person who gets annoyed with so-called soundtracks which leave out songs which were used during the movie? The Napolean Dynamite soundtrack includes songs that were NOT even used in the film (one example I Want Candy), but then it fails to include THE MAIN THEME by The White Stripes. I think if a CD is going to be called a soundtrack it should at least include all the music that was used in the film. And, how can a soundtrack not include the MAIN TITLE THEME SONG?! Granted, there is a lot of good music on this CD, but I still refuse to purchase this CD based on the principle that a soundtrack should, at the least, include music actually used and played in the film.

4 out of 5 stars Fiction Company???.......2006-07-20

Napoleon Dynamite is a great movie. I actually relate a bit and some of the characters remind me of my friends from high school. Anyways, about one of the songs on the soundtrack. Fiction Company does a song called "Design" on the soundtrack. I love this song and I've never heard of Fiction Company before. I tried looking for more of their songs or even a discography or any information and I can't find anything. Does anyone know if they have any more music out there?

4 out of 5 stars An audio time machine.......2006-08-02

I bought this album as a lovesick teenager in 1990. Revisiting it again it brought me back so quickly I felt like I could step out of the room and into the past.

Those looking for a song as good as "The Promise" will be disappointed... but the album is full of excellent vocals and song arrangments. The lyrics--well, this is the only weakness. Song after song seems to have brilliant, poignant words for the verse only to follow up with a chorus that is bland and verges on non-sequitur.

And after so long, I'm still not tired of it just the same.

Some questions if anyone knows trivia:

1) The last two songs "Total Devotion" and "Everything" seem muddled together a bit, for example, the chorus "Everything, everything" appears in "Total Devotion"... and the insertion of the title into the song "Everything" sounds awkward every time. What's going on with that?

2) Who IS the girl on the cover?

5 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. (I promise).......2006-07-16

I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be.
But if you'll read more of this review, I'll make you fall for it, I promise, I promise you I will. When in Rome: Clive Farrington, Andrew Mann and Michael Floreale were part of an earlier Manchester outfit, Leisure. Leisure featured Corinne Drewery, who would go on to front Swing Out Sister. After Swing Out Sister had enjoyed their ten minutes of fame with the single 'Break Out,' When In Rome stepped up to join the ranks of one-hit-wonders. Their 1988 single 'The Promise' was by far their biggest commercial success, and the popularity and staying power of the song is evidenced by the fact that it has been the most requested song at nearly every 80's music station. They released just the one album, and promptly faded into obscurity.

'When your day is through, and so is your temper,
You know what to do, I'm gonna always be there.
Sometimes if I shout, it's not what's intended.
These words just come out, with no gripe to bear.'

Until one movie would resurrect this 80's pop band. Napoleon Dynamite, which made its debut at the Sun dance Film Festival in January 2004. Napoleon was released to theaters in June 2004. That's when the song 'The Promise' became popular again hitting the top of Billboard's Dance Club Play chart. 'The Promise,' remixed, was the first single from their self-titled debut album. It was an instant success barely missing the Top Ten in the United States peaking at #11. Months later the trio reached Billboard's pop chart's lower reaches for the last time with 'Heaven Knows'. The Promise 2006 New CD, featuring never before released versions of 'The Promise' and the newly released radio edit mix of 'The Promise 2006'. This 7 track CD also includes their classic hit 'Heaven Knows'(Ultmix mix) and includes a bonus track 'Wherever You Go.' From their new CD soon to be released.

4 out of 5 stars Pop heaven.......2006-02-17

The megahit "The Promise" certainly COULD have been the first of several hits from this album, had the record company chosen the right follow-ups. The two should-have-been followup hits on this album, "Wide Wide Sea" and "Child's Play", both featuring really infectious choruses, would have been better programmed right after "The Promise", giving the album a stronger beginning. Other highlights include "Everything", which brings to mind The Hollies, and "Heaven Knows", with its Pet Shop Boys-like intro. There isn't anything too deep going on in the lyric department here (apart from the singer being bothered by his partner "dancing with another"), but, hey, this was the Eighties, remember? Repeated listenings reveals that this is really a quite wonderful pop album. OMD, Pet Shop Boys, The Human League, and early Tears For Fears are obvious influences, and if you like that kind of sound, this is a must. It would be nice to see an expanded edition of this CD, with the B-sides "Tonight", "Basilia", "1000 Questions", and "Whatever the Weather" (also on the original UK 12-track version with "Big City".)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2006-02-11

I have to say that "The Promise" is my absolute favorite 80's song! I love lots of 80's songs, but nothing compares to this one. Whenever I listen to it, it brings back good memories of my high school days. I can still remember the first time that my best friend and I heard it, and how we went crazy trying to find out who sang the song and what the title of the song was!

I am SO glad that I found this CD! The other songs are good, but "The Promise" is what really makes this CD worth buying. I've wanted this song forever, and it's a song that I never get tired of hearing, so it was worth it to spend a couple of bucks to get such an awesome song!

Jason Kay melds his longtime '70s fixations with '80s style synths on Dynamite, Jamiroquai's first record since 2001's A Funk Odyssey. It's been a long time since the acid jazz/funk hit "Virtual Insanity" (1996's Traveling Without Moving, to be exact), and even though the band never became the huge hit machine they seemed destined to become, they've continued to put out solid work. Odyssey and 1999's Synkronized showed off Kay's dexterity with this material, mining urban dance grooves from a goldmine of Motown, Stevie Wonder and far-ranging disco and soul. Dynamite keeps going, constructing an exuberant club vibe out of R&B styles, but also borderline electro ("Electric Mistress"), jumpy Squeeze-style pop ("Black Devil Car") and soulful, smooth nostalgia ("Seven Days In Sunny June"). A would-be guilty pleasure, only without the guilt, Kay's musical obsessions combine with his burgeoning talent on Dynamite to create another winner. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Strong........2007-05-30

This is one the strongest efforts by Jamiroquai. He has cretaed his own style which is very recognisable and, of course, he keep persuing it. Jamiroquai is innovative because he is different from others. And, this is true to his every album.

"Dynamite" is diverse in tempo and includes a number of really good songs. Some of them you may enjoy when you are up in the spirit and need some further drive, the others will serve well when you are a bit down in the mood. The album is recorded very well, both highs and lows. Very well defined bass. The voice sounds very natural. The sound engineering is great.

You will enjoy both the music and the sound. You will hear the details that add to the overall perception of this highly recommended CD. Take time and it will grow on you even more.

5 out of 5 stars Great blend of pop, rock, jazz, dance music !.......2007-03-15

Jamiroquai propels their tunes with a contagious rhytmic section of bass & drums, plus a jazzy piano, swinging pop lyrics, some tasteful guitar work and on top of that a great excuse for hitting the dance floor or at least tap a beat with your feet or hands. Excellent !

5 out of 5 stars The Space Cowboy Does it Again!.......2007-01-27

Dymanmite is yet another montage of eclectic musical genius from Jamirouquai. Although this album is phenomenal it is no better than any of the others. Only different, on yet another level. But then again each of their albums are an expression of the mind(s) and soul(s) behind the sound, boundless. If you haven't yet seen Jamiroquai in concert you must put attending a performance in the US or abroad high on your list of priorities. Why? Don't ask just go and see for yourself. By the way, my favorite song from the album is Seven Days in Sunny June.

4 out of 5 stars Great album..........2007-01-13

A long time Jamiroquai fan, I was disappointed when I first listened this record... somehow I was looking for it to best "A Funk Odyssey" and "Synkronized" right away. I had forgotten how long it took for those albums to grow on me. After having "Dynamite" in the collection for 3 weeks, I have come the conclusion that this album is a worthy continuation of the Jay Kay saga. If you are a die hard fan, I think you'll find it hard to rate the album above "A Funk Odyssey" and "Synkronized" but probably right on par.

GIVE YOURSELF TIME for this album to grow on you...

5 out of 5 stars DYNAMITE.......2006-09-18

After a four year hiatus since the release of their last cd 'A Funk Odyssey', Jamiroquai is back and better than ever. With thirteen years and five hit records including 'Traveling Without Moving' and 'Synkronized' under their belt, this is one band that understands the concept of "if it aint broke, don't fix it".

With their latest effort 'Dynamite' a heavier, edgier Jamiroquai is brought to light. This album, though slightly more guitar oriented (as heard on tracks 'Loveblind' and 'Black Devil Car') still manages to keep that funky flavor we all know and love. As is true with most great recordings of our time, this album is not necessarily a love at first play affair. Give it a couple of listens however and there will be no need to make extra space in your cd rack, as it will never leave your player.

The first track 'Feels Just Like It Should', slaps you with a groove so raunchy it'll curl your mothers hair. Although Jay Kay uses no "actual" profanity in his lyrics, the implied subject matter definitely keeps up with the trashy vibe set by the distorted bass and funky back beat drums.

For me though, the album really kicks into gear with the second song and coincidentally title track, 'Dynamite'. This along with songs such as 'Starchild', '(Don't) Give Hate A Chance' and 'Time Won't Wait', is where the band brings us back into familiar territory via a mixture of solid dance beats, funky bass lines, smooth, dynamic vocals and flirtatious melodies. This vintage disco/funk genre is definitely where the band is in their comfort zone, and where they seem to shine the brightest.

An instant vibe is set in the song 'Seven Days In Sunny June' that makes you feel almost as if your listening to one of your own memories. The cool and breezy feel of this one sets an ideal backdrop to Jay Kay's tale of summer, friendship and unrequited love ( or lust maybe? ) This song is a prime example of a perfect marriage between words and music.
'World That He Wants' is a departure from Jay Kay's usual dilettantish approach to lyrical composition. This song conveys a strong and poignant message about the tragic state of affairs in the world and the man responsible for them. By using sparser instrumentation on this track Jamiroquai takes a detour from their normal "groove oriented" format placing more emphasis on the lyrical content.

All in all, the arrangements, musicianship and production value on this album are the same high quality we've come to expect from this band over the years. In my opinion this is their best work to date, (not to mention one of the best live shows I've seen in a long time). Do yourself a favor and add this amazing album to your cd collection.

In summation 'Dynamite' is, well... DYNAMITE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Tightening Up, Finally.......2006-11-14

Mick Jones' post-Clash output has suffered from a grave sort of inconsistency. Big Audio Dynamite's Tighten Up, Vol. 88, which I bough two weeks ago, shows how the band could have a few decent ideas. However, that album's main fault was its lack of focus and directions. The songs were more like jams with half-spirited lyrics and repetitive motifs. 'Twas a fun album to make, I bet, but it wasn't on to listen to often.

Big Audio Dynamite II's album, however, shows a band with renewed energy and a more streamlined approach to its delivery. Now, songs don't prattle on in the pointless manner of the 1988 release. Instances of sampling have translated beyond vocal samples. Some tracks sample the synth from "Baba 'O Reily," one borrows from Kraftwerk, one nabs a bit of Phil Collins, and one even pilfers and loops a smidgeon of "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?".

Other songs are forgetable filler. What I've learned is that Mick Jones should only tinker with guitar noises if they retain a Kink-ed out influence. Otherwise, they're just rambling ditties. When he gets inventive and plays with synths, beatboxes and samples, however, he's a genius.

Hightlights include: "Rush," "The Globe," "I Don't Know" and "Kool Aid".

I'd suggest that, if you're curious about Jonesey's career, you try this album, plus some early B.A.D. and maybe you could even visit Carbon/Silicon's page and download their free tracks (this band consists of Jones and Gen X's guitarist, and they give away their music... nice!).

5 out of 5 stars Never outdated.......2006-03-14

Found this album again. I bought it when it first came out. My then girlfriend was listening to anything but alternative music and even she was hooked. I feel nostalgic listening to it again now but damn if I'm not jamming out to it how many years later? It doesn't grow old or get stuck in a certain "time". This may be true with alot of alternative music. One of my favorite albums.

3 out of 5 stars Guy with new ears speaks his piece.......2005-04-15

I'm not the average reviewer for this one. This actually was "inherited" by marriage from my wife, so I can't claim any nostalgic link to this CD. Except for "Rush" and the title track (which I'd heard on alternative radio) these are "new" songs, at least to me.

Big Audio Dynamite was former Clash-man Mick Jone's new project after he was given the heave-ho by Mick Strummer. It combines hip-hop samples with rock predating similar 90s bands like EMF or Jesus Jones. To my ears anyhow, this has held up pretty well and while not a "classic", it's still pretty listenable lo these many years later.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The singles stand tallest here. The self-examination of "Rush" is laid atop a sample-heavy driving drum beat with some clever oh-so-serious Britisher's musings about the nature of music providing an odd stop in the middle. "The Globe" is catchy party fare, if not especially inspiring lyrically, though it offers this medical advice:"What`s the health department got to say?/Don`t smoke more than 50 fags a day". (That's "cigarettes" in UK slang). "Innocent Child" recalls the Beach Boys "Caroline No" lyrically, with its theme of longing for a less jaded youth.

LOWS:
"The Tea Party" is really just a band joke..a medley of the songs before it "toned up" with fake strings and a semi-operatic vocal courtesy of Lorna Stucki...B.A.D. reimagined as Muzak more or less. Not one you'll want to hear much. Most of the other tracks are probably a shade too long..tightening them from 5 minutes to 3 1/2-4 would improve them.

BOTTOM LINE:
Not sheer genius but it did prove influential to others who fused rock with sampling and still is a decent listen. This may be the only time that Lionel Richie and Phil Collins sound COOL.

5 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2004-06-15

What do you expect more Clash? Naw! This album fuses rap/rock/electronica/dance wrapped into one party album. Don't expect the worlds best, but dudes, have it in the collection just in case you have those types o people back after the club.

3 out of 5 stars "B.A.D." to the bone........2004-04-04

Some people might just want the "Greatest Hits", but I'd actually rather have this album. It includes "Rush" and "The Globe", two hits that any alt-radio listener would know, plus the good tracks "Can't Wait/Live" and "Innocent Child". Also here is "Green Grass", which is a fairly catchy song, and I think contains a "Kate Bush" sample. The end of the disc isn't as strong, but it's still decent. Overall this is pretty good, it's no "Clash", but good.

5 out of 5 stars A very awesome CD. DEFINITELY recomend it.......2006-08-01

I love this album to death, it has such a mix of songs on it, including their most famous hit, Boyz-N-Tha-Hood. Anyone who likes alternative off the wall artist, should have this CD in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Better than anticipated.......2006-07-15

I bought this cd for the cover of Boyz-n-the-hood and was surprised to like all the songs on the cd. The real surprise was the acoustic version of "Anyway" sung by Emily Kate sister of Mark Morris. It is incredible. I hope dynamite hack continues to include her amazing vocals on their albums.

4 out of 5 stars Grew on me.......2006-03-12

I so often buy a CD for one song and regret ownership of the rest of the tracks. I initially thought it would be the same with Superfast, but I'm hooked. The songs are quite varied, well written, and fun. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars I still listen to this CD.......2005-12-12

I bought this CD when it came out (i was 15). now, almost 6 years later I still love listening to this album. I initially bought it for the "boyz in the hood' song and really loved all the other songs on it.

4 out of 5 stars Get it for "Anyway".......2005-04-01

Ok, I'll be honest. I don't really own this album. But I did download most of the tracks from it and listened to them. I wasn't expecting much, since I haven't heard anything from these guys from the late 90's, but there are some good songs on Superfast, and a few incredible ones. Their song "Anyway" is easily the best on the album. It's been a while since I've heard a song that completely hooked me, and that's what "Anyway" did. It should have been a hit long before the now cliched "Boyz-in-da-hood." I really think Dynamite Hack never really got their shot since their number one single was a cutesy rap cover. I know I wrote them off as soon as I heard it. But they're talented, and have a some pretty heavy songs. The next time I go to the used music store, I'm going to look for a cheap copy of Superfast. There's also a great piano/female version of "Anyway" that's hidden on the album. It's a beautiful song, and the woman singing it has a very good voice. She doesn't try too hard, and her voice is very sexy. I'd like to find out who she is. The point of this review is to give these guys a chance. I never did, and now I regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title - Big Audio Dynamite.......2006-12-14

What a great blast of beat-heavy weirdness. This album was a sensation when it hit; "The Bottom Line" was a big favorite in the clubs. Great dance music. "This is..." turned out to be an unforgettable album, perfect for parties, or for just hanging out with friends. An unbeatable traveling album as well. Only 43 minutes in length, it's great from start to finish. The songs are layered and unique, and the beats (and the super-fun sound effects) are varied and even funny. The lyrics are excellent. With one bold step (surely made up of a million agonizing minutes in the studio) Mick Jones launched himself beyond the Clash. He brought good company with him, making "This is Big Audio Dynamite" one of the very best records of its decade, of all time, and definetly a classic.

5 out of 5 stars The first of several great records.......2006-05-15

BAD went on after this witty, original, melodic, rhythmic release to produce at least two other superb works: Megatop Phoenix and The Globe. Mick Jones is a really creative fellow, with some of Frank Zappa's humor and ability to write a great tune. Wanted to point out - since many reviews refer to the Good/Bad/Ugly sampling - that the dialogue in E=MC2 (you're Jack the Lad...give them a bit of stick) comes from the Nicholas Roeg film Performance, with James Fox, Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg, set in 60s London. Jones evokes the Swinging London era quite often; there's a hilarious sequence on The Globe where Cathy MacGowan, or someone like that, is rambling on about dolly birds and with-it clubs.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic!.......2005-11-13

When this album came out, many people were surprised that Mick Jones had done something so different. Everyone knew he had a more poppy taste than Joe Strummer, and he indulges it here to great effect.

At the time, it was one of the first albums I had heard that used sampling on such a large scale. Medicine Show kicks off the album with its samples of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." Even my non-music lover husband likes this because he's a big Clint fan. I just love the way the music grooves so mellow and happy under the shootout you hear above! Sony is a classic 80's retelling of the prototypical Japanese worker, at the same job for 40 or 50 years. Of course, at the time, there was a lot of fear economically of the Japanese; however, they were revered in their work habits, inventory control procedures, and quality circles. This song is pretty stereotypical but it's tongue in cheek as well, which is what makes it great.

E=mc2 is wonderful! The beat starts in and never lets up the entire 6 minutes of the song. The samples this time are from an English film, "Performance," and are a nice complement to the pulsating beat of the song. And The Bottom Line... "the horses are on the track!" Who can forget that line?

What a breath of fresh air in 1985--and a biracial band as well. DJ/filmmaker Don Letts was a driving force in the band and the one behind all the samples.

If you like "Inoculated City" from the Clash's Combat Rock, you'll love "This is Big Audio Dynamite." It has the same funky feel and Mick Jones vocals, but a whole album's worth this time!

5 out of 5 stars E=MC2=absolutely amazing!.......2005-06-16

This is almost exactly what I look for in a sampling-based album - strong vocal, strong song structure, and catchy beats. "This is Big Audio Dynamite" definetely delivers in all aspects - unimaginably catchy, intoxicating beats that really get into your soul.

"E=MC2" is now one of my favorite 80s tracks - brilliantly put together with a strong vocal and amazing beat.

Why did it take me so long to find such an amazing-sounding album? I thank the wonderful "Listmania" creators on Amazon.com for this amazing discovery.

Besides "E=MC2", the best tracks are "Sony" and "The Bottom Line." Download or buy ASAP!!

5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2005-04-12

Big Audio Dynamite's first album has got to be their absolute best. My first exposure to B.A.D. was hearing the song "Bad" in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", and it made me seek out this album. (This was before I was even a big Clash fan, and I later become one.) To my surprise, every single track was just as good as that one, if not better. From the western sampled "Medicine Show" (with clips from "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" and "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre"), the catchy and kitschy "Sony", the dance hit "E=MC2", to the Reggae peppered "A Party", I can't find a track among these 8 songs that isn't good.

I highly recommend checking out anything of Big Audio Dynamite that you can get your hands on, but a lot of it is out of print. (The drastically underappreciated F-Punk being one of those) Luckily, the brilliant debut album is still in print, and even though it's still a bit hard to find, you can find it without nearly as much as hassle as some of the other releases. Grab this one!

A reminder that the post-Clash Mick Jones once had something exciting to say about the gray area between rock and dance/hip-hop. Initial fare like "E=MC2" and "C'Mon Every Beatbox" swings loose and wild, while such early '90s tracks as "The Globe" and "Rush" benefit from a tighter reign. A definitive collection. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Spread The News The Maestros Back.......2006-12-04

From the acrimonious breakup of The Clash - though Joe Strummer later colllaborated with Big Audio Dynamite - came several bands with varying sound from Mick Jones. The group has been known as Big Audio Dynmaite, Big Audio Dynamite II and Big Audio due to the changes in band personnel and approaches to music.

With elements of the sound he refined as guitarist/vocalist in "The Only Band That Matters," Jones delivers lyrics that are sometimes comparable with the snapshot mosaics of John Dos Passos in his classic USA Trilogy and the spoken performances by Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg. Many of the earlier songs intertwine lyrics with cuts from TV shows, movies and music.

Jones especially shows his brilliance in the still politically timely The Bottom Line, guitar-powered E=MC2 and C'mon Every Beat Box. In Sightsee M.C.! and I Turned Out A Punk, Jones pounds away at issues like mindless hate & how many let a musical movement narrow their thinking to extreme levels of nothingness.

The band somewhat devolved from a post-punk dance/rock to a heavier sound comparable with The Clash, and then - with the addition of the legendary Ranking Roger - began to explore the ingredients that made ska essential and timeless.

Planet BAD is a great sampler and shows that a greatest hits package is only as good as the band whose name appears on the cover.

1 out of 5 stars Got to be one of the Worst Bands I heard.......2006-10-02

I was forced to listen to this band because everytime I got into a friend's car that loved this band had it blasting in his car. I couldn't stand that ridiculous voice from the lead singer and the band's wacked sound. Don't get me wrong here. I'm not a hater, I love all type of music, from rock, rap, metal, new wave, pop, jazz, freesyle, opera, classical, country, R&B, blue grass, gospel, nu metal, industrial, techno, to the homeless guy on the boardwalk beating on pots and pans for a nickel. I LOVE music. But....WHAT THE HELL DO YOU FIND IN THIS BAND????? THEY SUCKED!!!! BAD....LY!!

4 out of 5 stars This collection is dynamite........2006-09-13

This obviously works well for someones first or only B.A.D. album, which of course is the intent. Everything that any casual fan might know is present. There's no doubt that the biggest hits here are "Rush" and especially "The Globe", but the rest is good too. Minus those two songs, the strongest stuff is the first 4-5 tracks. All are sample-filled and hit-worthy. The rest is decent and fun, which I think sums up the band as a whole also. Truth be known, if all you know is "Rush" and "The Globe", you may just want to get "The Globe" album. It has both hit songs and is solid front to back with killer tunes. Can't go wrong here though.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasic Band!.......2006-02-07

This compilation covers most of the best BAD songs, not that you wouldn't want to collect the individual albums, but if you just have a casual interest then you can't go wrong here.

Nearly all the songs still sound innovative and enjoyable. I personally don't think they sound "dated" at all. And even if they did, so what? This type of music still towers over the dumbed down, depressing, cookie cutter garbage that dominates the pop charts today. And what about the lyrics? I think BAD's lyrics are some of the funniest, most clever I've heard. You just don't find any other band quite like them when it comes to song material.

Even if you don't remember BAD from the eighties and nineties, if you give this CD a chance to let it grow on you, you won't regret it. Listen to this, and then turn on the radio and compare it to the hip-hop and teeny bopper regurgitated pap pushed on the masses today. I know you'll find BAD still sound refreshing and catchy with memorable lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Songs are good, if sounding a bit dated.......2005-04-12

Big Audio Dynamite is one of those bands that did not achieve major crossover success, despite the fact that they appealed to so many different segments. Their Clash roots lent them punk and indie credibility. They also appealed to those who liked the new wave/synth bands of the 80's. Finally, their music was embraced by the dance community and was a staple of early 90's club play.

This CD assembles some of those excellent tracks, including their 2 biggest hits: "Rush" and "The Globe". But many other songs are good as well including "C'mon Every Beatbox" and "I Turned out a Punk". The one thing that hampers the songs and makes them seem somewhat dated is the often heavy use of sampling and sound bytes. I know sampling still goes on today, but I think it is more subtle now than it was then. If anything turns people off on this CD, I would say it is the fact that almost every track uses some kind of sound byte. The way these sound bytes have been used are often clever, but the songs stand up on their own and the sound bytes are not necessary. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A gem.......2007-03-25

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD!.......2006-05-10

I have everthing they've put out and I still think this one is the best. The vocals and backround vocals are simply awesome. The energy and electrifying guitar that go with the great songs on this CD make it a joy to listen to all the time. The title track is still my favorite..."Cry Baby" and "Cold Shower" are 2 other standouts. But every song on this CD is outstanding. Kudos to Kix. They didn't get enough recognition for such a great band. Saw them live twice in Maryland back in the days and they were outstanding. Pick this CD up.

5 out of 5 stars KIX are for Kidz.......2006-01-06

Having grown up in MD and watched KIX as a copy band named Shooze, they always put on an EXCELLENT Live Show. They played much of thier 1st album material in a local night club named Leonardtown Wharf before their first recording contract. Their music was always fun and loud, what Rock-N-Roll is all about. ALL of their releases, Midnight Dynamite included, have that spark with catchy hooks that just reels you in for more of the sound. You gotta have this one!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome AC/DC-styled rock.......2005-06-17

Kix was one of the pop metal bands that unfortunately slipped under the radar of the record buying public, even those who remember them often just remember the song "Don't Close Your Eyes" from the 1988 album "Blow My Fuse." However, those wanting to know more of the Kix story should check out this awesome slab of AC/DC styled rock.

Kix hailed from Hagerstown, MD, a blue collar town that's close to both western PA as well as West Virginia. I grew up not too far from there, and they played at Hammerjacks in Baltimore a lot, plus they recorded their live album (in 1992 I believe) at the University of Maryland, where I eventually went to school.

Anyhow, as I grew up in Maryland, I always had a little bit of knowledge as to who Kix were, and I thought the snippet of the song "Cold Chills" in the Wayne's World movie was pretty cool. This was the 3rd Kix record, and it blew me away. It was a great blend of the straight-up hard rock of 1988's "Blow My Fuse" with the quirkier elements of the first two records still intact.

If you live near the Baltimore area and get the 97.9 FM station (98 ROCK), you may have even heard the tune "Cold Shower", possibly the first rap-metal tune ever (not of the Limp Bizkit variety though - this one is a lot more fun and lighthearted - and 80's sounding). It still gets played every once in awhile too, a testament to the band's awesome local legacy. Plus you get one of the alltime unsung hard rock ballads in "Walkin' Away" - this album is a must buy for fans of AC/DC, Cheap Trick, early VH, and Hanoi Rocks - great rock bands with good tunes and a good sense of humor. Guitar World also called this one of the 20 essential hair metal albums, which sums it up pretty well.

Best Tracks:
"Bang Bang (Balls of Fire)" - Pretty much AC/DC 101 here, with the cool trivia that this was Kip Winger's first songwriting credit (cowritten with the band).
"Layin' Rubber" - Awesome uptempo hard rocker with a few twists, and of course that ever-so-subtle double entendre.
"Walkin' Away" - Put it this way, this is probably one of the top 20 ballads of all time (in any genre). The lyrics are about as sincere and honest as you can get, and when you think you've got it pegged it switches gears and starts rocking hard.
"Cold Shower" - Hilarious, unique, and should have been a hit.
"Sex" - This song just rocks without question, like a great lost Aerosmith tune. Harmonica, a funky & tricky riff, handclaps, memorable chorus, it's all here. Another should-have-been hit!

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore Rocked.......2005-02-27

I've been thinking about this band and the songs on this album since the 80's when I was partiing my *^$# in Baltimore. We use to hang out in a place called Hammerjacks and these guys were a regular there. For the 80's hair bands they were original and have extra kick. I believe at one time they were #1 on the British charts and for good reason. Anyway they bring back great memories but even if I never heard them before I would still think they were a great rock and roll band. There's enough said in other reviews about particular songs so I'll leave it there.

Throughout the 1980s, "We are the Scorpions!" was lead vocalist Klaus Meine's concert-opening battle cry, energizing and readying the faithful in sold-out stadiums for a Teutonic onslaught of vital, sometimes plodding, eardrum-splitting rock anthems. In short, the arena-rock monsters were never a picnic-under-the-stars kind of band ... until Moment of Glory. The new millennium brings the Scorpions full circle, melding in-your-face party anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (now called "Hurricane 2000") and "Big City Nights" into fully orchestrated concoctions featuring the Berlin Philharmoniker. Where the grandiose likes of "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You" are obvious choices for such a pairing, and indeed, work well, the "Deadly Sting Suite," with almost unrecognizable instrumental versions of "He's a Woman, She's a Man" and "Dynamite," will likely catch the unknowing fan of classic Scorps off guard. Both Deep Purple and Metallica have used full orchestras to accent their songs with mixed results, and the same goes for the Scorps. There's a fine line between wine-and-cheese classical fare and whiney and cheesy metal. Here the Scorpions teeter, if often gracefully, on that line. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on Scorpions.......2007-04-12

I absolutely love the marriage of rock and symphony here. It's gorgeous. The Scorpions take already amazing songs and pump them up an extra notch. A long time ago I heard "Still Loving You" on the radio, not knowing who sung it. It took me years to finally discover the Scorpions. I own two different versions of "Still Loving You," and I far prefer this one to the original. It gives me this yearning inside. The only thing I don't like about this album is the guest vocalists. I love Klaus Meine. He adds an ethereal element to the music, and with the guest vocals, it takes away from the beauty, in my opinion. But don't let that deter you from getting this, because it is so worth it. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is amazing! It's all amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Moment of Glory.......2007-04-01

With metal music it is always louder is better and this album found one of the coolest ways to make metal louder. Combining the Scorpions with a the Philharmonic creates one of the coolest sounding albums I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars [].......2007-03-14

i dont own this album but i have heard the songs off of it and i think their all great and performed well. and also as a side note since i read alot of comments about the guest vocals on "big city nights" but no mention of who: it is Ray Wilson best known for replacing Phill Collins in Genesis and recording the classic Calling all Stations

1 out of 5 stars dynamite!.......2002-10-21

Just when you think the scorpions couldn't do worst...they prove you wrong!
Even Metallica's s&m is better...close but still.
I am sure that it was a great experience to live, for the band and the audience, because that type of event is always unique and can bring strong emotions-unless you have a dumb..s sitting next to you, drinkin' beer and screaming every five minutes Dynamiiiiiiite!!-but on cd...for me it doesn't do it,but it probably is a treasure for those who were there.
Now, I'm not gonna start the debat with DEEP PURPLE and the LSO(1999) but I was there at the Royal Albert Hall and that's why I can understand the concept and the thrill of holding the recording of such concerts...but still DEEP PURPLE 's symphonic album features something that neither Scorpions or Metallica holds...and this is an ORIGINAL PIECE OF MUSIC CREATED FOR A GROUP AND A ORCHESTRA!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Moment of Glory for the Scorpions!.......2002-07-31

AWESOME is how I would sum up this CD. From the moment I first heard it, I knew I HAD to have it. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars This time I'll bet you it's BAD.......2007-02-08

This album is so hot that most people have not caught up with it. Some people may never catch up with it.

Mick Jones tosses off killer hooks and melodies endlessly and effortlessly. (Most) other songwriters should be as jealous as hell. You hear the germs of 4 or 8 good songs in one song full of these little false starts the band is famous for doing.

There are lines on this record--it's true of so many Clash and Clash-Related songs--lines that have seemed so wise or so right-on that these days, when I'm baffled or disappointed, they are what come to mind. ("And a drifter will tell you no place is best..." from "V Thirteen", is one example.) With Joe (RIP) so much in on things on this one especially, this, and the BAD records one before and one after, meld into a general category I have mentally set aside and labeled as my Clash and Clash-Related Appreciation Department.

I got it on tape when it came out. When I upgraded to CD, I was disappointed to find that the CD version of "Hollywood Boulevard" is different from the cassette version. The CD version is OK. The tape version is amazing.

If anybody knows of some CD like a best of collection, or some version of No. 10 that I could look for with the better cassette version of "Hollywood Boulevard", I'd appreciate your telling me where to find it (in the comments section, perhaps?).

5 out of 5 stars Big Audio Dynamite's Best Album!.......2005-06-15

No. 10 Upping Street perfectly captures Big Audio Dynamite at it's creative peak. Using soundbytes from "Scarface" and
"Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" very wisely, drum machines, keyboards, bass and guitars very effectively, Mick Jones and Joe Strummer create an awesome mix of music and politics. It must have been a strange sight to see Joe Strummer walk into the studio and work on the recording of the album with Mick Jones. In some ways this is a Clash album (what it might have sounded like if they continued with the musical progession of Combat Rock). Don Letts contributions are also cool (mixing and editing of the f/x and
vocal tapes). The bass riffs add to the album as well.

The tracks C'mon Every Beatbox, V Thirteen and Limbo The Law are amongst my favorites. Some might disagree with me about which Big Audio Dynamite album is the best one.
For my money it has to be No. 10 Upping Street. Mick Jones and Joe Strummer made one hell of a musical duo.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This is BAD at their best.......2005-03-03

To me, this was Mick Jones at his best. Mick loves to experiment and get a little bit funky and creative and no BAD album is more creative and funky than this one. "C'mon Every Beatbox" kickstarts this thing into action and is one of the most upbeat and exciting songs you will ever hear. "Limbo the Law" and "Sambadrome" take the sound into a Brazilian alternative direction that will have you hitting rewind numerous times. There are a ton of samplings of movie clips mixed in with the dance music, in keeping with the BAD tradition. To me, It is a BAD that is a little more relaxed than they were in their first album. This album is not better than the first one, just different. I like this album, I like it a lot!

5 out of 5 stars stick of dynamite.......2003-11-10

5/5.
"#10,upping street" is unmistakably one of B.A.D.'s best.hardcore beats had to have started somewhere, why not the 80s! big audio totally made their mark on music, and our stereos!
so basicslly, this means the origional art of sampling was created by artists like them.
music today totally sucks. that's not hard to see. "#10 upping street" had a solid beat that totally dented hip the beats of today. i'm 17, but i know what music is.

2 out of 5 stars For Hard Core Fans Only.......2002-07-22

Mostly bland, by this time it seemed that BAD was dead in the water, nothing here matches the excitement of THIS IS. Especially annoying are `Sightsee MC!', `Ice Cool Killer' and `The Big V'. BAD goes rap? No thanks. It's easy to see why they did the whole BAD 2 thing. Buy THE GLOBE instead.
