Eddie Murphy stars in the remake of this classic flick, but his presence is curiously absent on this soundtrack comp (not even a sound bite from the funnyman). Instead Dr. Dolittle is a solid collection of R&B and hip-hop heavyweights, including Ray J., Montell Jordan, Aaliyah, and All Saints. While there's nothing too groundbreaking here, the album does have its strong points. As the disc progresses, the ballads are left behind and the songs shift into high gear. Timbaland's up-tempo "Da Funk" and Eddie Kane & DeVille's "Push 'Em Up" are party-ready, and Dawn Robinson does a funky rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Rocksteady." But by the time the Sugarhill Gang codas with "Ain't Nothin' but a Party," you realize the bash is just warming up. --Jason Verlinde
Vibe
Dr. Dolittle's line-up--ranging from sweet, mid-tempo R&B to bouncin' southern bass--has little to do with the film's story line, but it sure can make you dance.

Totaly misleading and an insult to the original movie.......2004-01-16
Not what I had expected.......2002-08-05
Every song from DOCTOR DOLITTLE is absolutely wonderful and unique in itself and expresses so much feeling and emotion when sung by it's original cast members and this is really what I prefer exposing the young children to whom I work with each and every day.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to vent my dissapointment in this CD under your customer reviews.
IT IS O.K. THIS CD HAS SOME GREAT SONGS AND SOME BAD SONGS........1999-01-02

Dr. Feelgood.......2005-10-13
R&B OST, anyone?.......2002-05-31
Anyway, the most interesting in this Dr. Doolittle stuff is the soundtrack. Although I'm not sure why some boybands like O-Town ("We Fit Together") or LFO (Life is Good) are in this more r&b fitting movie but the CD is still okay.
Some of the good stuff in here are "Cluck Cluck"- The Product G&B, the awesome collaboration of RL, Snoop Dogg & Lil Lil' Kim's "Do You Wanna Roll", the rough tounged rapping of Flipmode Squad's "What It Is (Part II)". If you enjoy more of the r&b scene, these are the tracks that will relax you somehow-Alicia Keys' "Rear View Mirror" and Luther Vandross' oozing voice "If I Was The One". Other neat songs would be Next's "Lookin' For Love", Jimmy Cozier's "Two Steps" and Deborah Cox' "Absolutely Not".
Good Party Music.......2002-03-07
just brillant.......2002-01-17
A keys, Deb Cox ... you can also feel the touch of Carlos McKinney who did a great job producing. actually if anybody know how to contact him (webpage...) just tell me.
I'll finish saying if you're into R&B that's a must listen to stuff.

one of my favorite '60s scores!.......2006-06-21
old 20th Century-Fox Records soundtrack album for years,and it's
one of my favorite 1960s scores.Like the movie itself, this is an underrated gem!Leslie Bricusse's songs are simply delightful,
and they are beautifully played by the Twentieth Century-Fox
Studio Orchestra under the masterful direction of Lionel Newman
and his staff.Although they are obviously not professional singers,Rex Harrison and Samantha Eggar do very well here,
certainly much better than Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave did in Warner Bros.' "Camelot" that same year.Anthony Newley,
Richard Attenborough, and young William Dix also do well.My
favorites are "Fabulous Places" and "Something In Your Smile".
This is a terrific CD that provides an hour of good listening
and wonderful memories of the movie.
I've never seen anything like it!.......2006-05-13
Talk to the animals
I've never seen anything like it
You've got to see this play. I'ts amazing.
Dr. Dolittle.......2005-10-13
"If only I could sing (with the animals)... joke. i love rex.......2005-04-26
But I forget. This is about the soundtrack. My brother and I have always danced about singing "My friend the doctor says, duh duh duh duh duh duh duh", the catchy opening song that sets a trend for the rest of the songs--- Anthony Newley co-wrote the songs- Anthony Newlety has the best songs. From his cheery opening, to the haunting Beautiful Things and uplifting After Today, you cannot help but love his (fake) Irish vibrato that really makes you soar.
If you are a fan of Rex Harrison, then you will really love the sing-songy/talk of the famous Talk to the Animals. If you arent accustomed to Rex's work, go buy My Fair Lady, learn to love it, and come back and listen to this. If you dislike Rex Harrison immensely, buy this CD for the other songs, and just skip his three big ones.
Rex's Like Animals is best seen, but is also really clever when heard. His other good song is When I Look in Your Eyes, a serenade for a seal, which is considered by an older Guatemalan Psychiatrist that I know, to be the greatest love song of all time.
The reason why this really wonderful soundtrack got a four? It was close to a five, but then I listened to some of the tracks betweened the excellent ones I mentioned. Save for (now Sir) Richard Attenborough's Ive Never Seen Anything Like It, they are mediocre. There is no way of getting around. The songs were not written for females (although many enjoy the pretty At the Crossroads), and others (including the finale) are too children's movie cute.
Save for my minor gripes, the Doctor Dolittle soundtrack is really a wonderful CD, filled with immensely talented actors singing memorable songs.
Such a simple beauty.......2003-12-22

Album Description
Reissue of album the late singer released for Atlantic in 1967, a unique version of the classic musical that Eddie Murphy brought back to the silver screen in a comedic form in 1998. 10 tracks, including 'Talk To The Animals', 'My Friend The Doctor' and 'At The Crossroads'. 1998 Diablo Records/ Crimson release.Customer Reviews:
Worth the wait! More wonderful than I could have imagined!.......2000-10-11
I ordered this CD with little knowledge of the contents. I knew of it's existence, but had never actually seen one available. I had waited for a long time to get this recording and naivite wasn't going to stop me. Having heard on various compilations only two of the ten tracks, I was hoping for swinging arrangements like the two I knew and lots of Bobby Darin "hups" and ad libs. I didn't get those, but got much more.
"Dr. Dolittle" is the score, with words and music by Leslie Bricusse, to the 1960's version of the film (starring Rex Harrison of "My Fair Lady" fame) as sung by Bobby Darin. The ten songs took Bricusse 18 months to write and consequentially, each one is a gem unto itself. There are 4 up-tempos, 1 bluesy ballad and 5 traditional ballads. Bobby sings them all with his characteristic charm and flair. As is true of the Bricusse/Newley penned "Once in a Lifetime," this music fits perfectly into Darin's style and extremely capable vocal abilities. The somewhat dated, though charming and appropriate arrangements are by Roger Kellaway. Most are reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," with harpsichord twanging in the background, but some are completely original, odd at times, and always unpredictable. Songs of note are the reflective "At the Crossroads," the tender "When I Look In Your Eyes," the naively fun "My Friend the Doctor," and the extremely fine performance of "After Today." Also included are the two songs which I had heard previously and which were my impetus for purchasing this recording in the first place "Beautiful Things" and, of course, "Talk to the Animals."
This recording is a must have for any Bobby Darin fan. It shows a side of his abilities rarely heard nowadays. He was a great balladeer in league with the likes of Sinatra and out-shined everyone with his interpretations of up-tempos. Order this CD now and pass the news along to your friends. This rare recording of what should have been Bobby Darin classics, but lacked marketing backing from Atlantic, is available again and sounds better than ever.
4 out of 5 stars because the recording only lasts 39 minutes and should have been coupled with another out of press recording as the label has done in the past with 4 other records.

A Tour de Force.......2006-05-17
Equally accomplished are the charts of Hall-of-Fame arranger Marty Paich, who at the end of the closing tune to this album, 'Talk to the Animals,' takes us home with a witty musical reference to one of Bricusse's contemporary British composers, Tony Hatch, the writer and producer behind singer Petula Clark's hits. Sammy, of course, maybe with one of his appearances on "Hullabaloo" in mind, is hip to the musical reference, and the two proceed to exit musically with a tip of the cap to Mr. Hatch. Hip stuff indeed. Pet Clark must have smiled at that ending.
The CD liner notes are by composer Leslie Bricusse. He goes into some depth concerning the gratitude he and composing partner Tony Newley had for Sammy championing their music over the years. He mentions that Sammy was the first person he actually played the Dolittle score for while he was staying at the home of Sam during one of his visits to the States in 1966. Upon hearing it, Sammy told him he liked it so much he promised to record it. And boy did he! Sammy's New York hometown protege Bobby Darin must have also been quite impressed, because he later recorded his own version of Dolittle with the help of arranger Roger Kellaway. Darin's is a nice set too, but this one by Sammy is definitive.
