CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE LISTENING TO THE BROTHERS MUSIC. BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES. THEIR SONGS PLAYING MAKES ME FEEL A LITTLE YOUNGER AND HAPPIER.

4 out of 5 stars Brothers Four Greatest.......2006-09-02

This is a nice quiet album, definitely easy listening. It would be nice to have a few songs that are a little snappy to intermingle with the mellow ones. Overall, a nice album.

4 out of 5 stars The brothers four-Greatest hits.......2006-08-27

I like about the music of "The brothers four", I`m 58 years, that`s kind of music I've been listening about 25-30 years ago, living in a small town in Finland I didn`t found that kind of CD here, so I`m satisfied to get it. Thank you.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Honest music, wonderful voices, timeless value.......2006-03-08

Five stars is not enough! An excellent compilation of some of the greatest tracks from the original members of The Brothers Four. This CD is an import and therefore much more expensive than in Japan, but even at this price it's well worth the extra cash if you want a BEST OF to take with you on your travels or simply to try out.

I used to revere The Brothers Four as a kid, and now, after many years of listening to other things (classical, jazz, tango and pop), I still feel that they are one of the best things to happen to music. Their rendering of Seven Daffodils is devastatingly beautiful, and to my ears unsurpassable. But one thing that has struck me this time around is their group dynamic, which comes across most clearly, I think, in Goodnight Irene: the voices match the verses perfectly and each Brother does his part quite selflessly to make the song much funnier and more tragic than it might have been otherwise. Very gratifying to both heart and mind! Who said that folk music can't be subtle?

Jamaica Farewell and Where Have All the Flowers Gone are bound to sound familiar to most people even today - again, at least in the case of the latter song, I haven't heard many performers who come close to The Brothers Four. As many people have said before, it's the unbeatable combination of their perfect sense of harmony and their exquisite voices. I would also add their restraint and delicacy.

The songs they seem to be best known for are also here: Green Leaves of Summer and Greenfields. Unforgettable!

Yellow Bird: sheer delight! If you're the least bit synesthesic, you'll practically "see" the bright yellowness jump out of the vocal harmony.

And then there are some up-tempo songs which will make you chuckle and soar: San Francisco Bay Blues, Abilene, Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport, John B. Sails. Listen to the virtuoso guitar playing on these!

Scarborough Fair sounds quite eerie, bringing a whole new feel to this already strange and wonderful canticle. Unlike most of the other songs, where the four voices are clearly separated in stereo, here you have the guitars separated and the voices fused at the center for the most part. Interesting effect.

Some pop-like songs which grow on you because of the beauty of the voices (I keep coming back to that!): Changes, Try to Remember, Both Sides Now

The lyrics of This land is Your Land bother me a bit. This song seems to be a favorite at folk gatherings, which is understandable, and The Brothers Four do a superb job as usual, though it's one of the two tracks on this CD I don't listen to very often. The other one which I can't drum up much enthusiasm for is 55 Days at Peking - the singing is great, but the lyrics leave me cold.

Finally, the most pleasant surprise on this CD was Come to My Bedside, My Darlin'. I hadn't heard it in my childhood, and if I had, I'd have probably mistaken it for a lullaby. Makes me blush!

To wrap up, for those who loathe the banjo with red-hot passion, forget your prejudices and get ready for a deeply soothing and heart-warming experience. And for those who don't like apolitical folk music, think of these songs as manifestations of eternal yearnings and hopes, the best our human hearts can accommodate. Listen to this CD with your loved ones, especially your kids! This is what singing used to be, this is what four guys in their 20's were capable of expressing. Maybe we'll see the day again when the emotional maturity of our youngsters will rise to this level.
