Bob Dylan once called Smokey Robinson "one of America's greatest living poets," and one listen to the 50 sumptuous tracks in this power-packed two-CD set provides validation for the quote. Aside from being Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.'s right-hand man almost from the label's inception, William "Smokey" Robinson was the author of a truckload of hits for the fledgling Motor City operation. With the Miracles, he was in peak form. This excellent compilation covers all the bases: from timeless classics such as "Shop Around," "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Ooo Baby Baby," "The Tracks of My Tears," "More Love," "I Second That Emotion," and the immortal "Tears of a Clown" to gems like 1960's "Who's Lovin' You" (later popularized by a youthful Michael Jackson and his brothers) and the group's earliest sides, "Got a Job," "Bad Girl," and "Way Over There." There are treats like a live version of "Going to a Go-Go" and previously unreleased cuts like "My Heart Says Yes" and "'Til You Were Gone." Truly a remarkable collection that leaves no doubt that Smokey and the Miracles remained at the top of their game for almost 15 years. --David Nathan

Amazon.com essential recording

The Temptations have long had the reputation for being able to out-sing, out-dress, and out-dance any vocal group in sight. Their earliest hits featured either the grits-and-gravy stylings of David Ruffin ("My Girl," "I Wish It Would Rain") or the gossamer falsetto of Eddie Kendricks ("The Way You Do the Things You Do," "You're My Everything"). Replacing Ruffin with Dennis Edwards, the group went to a five-lead-voices concept ("Cloud Nine," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone") that kept them in hits for another two decades. This 46-song, 2 CD set sports every one of these classics, an incredible live! version of "Ol' Man River," the seriously funky &quo;Shakey Ground," the Rick James-assisted "Standing on the Top," and many, many magical musical moments more. Bassman Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, and the unrelated Otis Williams were the other key members . Recommended reading: Temptations by Otis Williams with Patricia Romanowski (Putman, 1988) and Deliver Us from Temptation by Tony Turner with Barbara Aria (Thunder's Mouth Press, 1992). --Don Waller

5 out of 5 stars Top class stuff.......2007-03-04

My copy of this CD arrived damaged and so I had to order a slightly different version rather urgently from somewhere else. I'd still like to review it though.

I wanted to get this CD after hearing the song "Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today)" being used to promote (the then upcoming) Season 4 of HBO's "The Wire". Check out these lyrics: "People moving out, people moving in (Why?)/ Because of the colour of their skin/ Run, run, run but you sure can't hide/ An eye of an eye, a tooth for a tooth/ Vote for me and I'll set you free!/ The only person talkin' about love, my brother, is the preacher/ And it seems nobody's interested in learnin' but the teacher."

The producers of that show are incredibly smart. I'm sure any fan of "The Wire" will agree that those few lines capture the current season of the show perfectly, almost as if the song was written for it. Or as if they wrote the show around the song.

Of course neither is the case; the use of the song simply came about as the result of good researching, and The Temptations probably don't need any introduction anyway. Alongside other male vocal groups like the O'Jays, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5/The Jacksons, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and even The Commodores, these dudes were the soundtrack to the 60s and 70s, and the soundtrack to my generation's youth. They don't make them like this anymore.

All the hits are here; tunes like "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone", "My Girl", "Get Ready", "Just My Imagination" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (with Diana Ross & The Supremes) among more recent ones like "Treat Her Like A Lady". And of course, "Ball Of Confusion". Over 40 songs and not a dud to be found anywhere. They certainly don't make them like this anymore.

This is one of those CDs I put on and find difficult to stop even if I'm late for an appointment somewhere. I'm playing it in the car and I get to where I want to go and I don't want to get out, at least, not until the song I'm listening to has finished. This is top class stuff. The best Temptations collection around today.

Right on, brothers!

5 out of 5 stars Is Temptation a sin then iam guilty........2006-01-26

First let me address the Mono issue which is an issue for some people. My music sytem is so sophisticated it takes Mono and split it into multichannel stereo sound.Motown used the original master tapes, the result is nothing short of breathtaking. Finally, as far as the collection is concern this is and will always be the best Anthology ever created.I will venture to recommend the Michael Jackson Anthology created by the same people with absolutely amazing sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars I've got sunshine on a cloudy day!.......2005-08-18

The Temptations are my favorite band of all time. Their music is just fantastic. Even though I am only 17 but I love their music. I wish I was born when they were performing classics like "My Girl" "Since I lost my Baby" and the timeless ballad "My Imagination. Too bad this CD is out of print. This is definitly one of the best greatest hits collection amazon has on sale.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2005-08-10

This is the best compilation of the Temptations music on the market today. It has almost forty of their greatest and most memorable hits. Disc has mostly there sweet love songs and ballads, while David Ruffin was apart of the group. Disc two has some of their more disco sounds and music from the 70's after Dennis joined them. I've always been a fan of the Temptations and I find listening to this cd a joy.

3 out of 5 stars Mono?!?!!?.......2005-05-23

I realize that posting a review of anything less than five stars seems not only sacrilege, but will also subject me to "not helpful" ratings - anyone wandering upon this title will be predisposed to wanting to like it, but .... wow, Glenn Johnson's review here hit this nail on the head!!! Reviewing the track listing is a joy, but listening to the mono mixes, knowing that pristine stereo mixes of these Funk Brothers tracks exist, is so frustrating as to detract from this heavenly music. Hey, I love listening to Ruffin and Kendricks and the Funk Brothers, but can't give this one a higher rating due to the ridiculous mono treatment of the early material. Some material should be heard in mono (see Phil Spector's glorious 60s productions where the stereo separation robs the sound of its overall power), but each instrument and vocal here is much better experienced for the tracks that overlap on Compact Command Performances.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2001-08-09

This cd combines some of the prettiest songs on Broadway (Don't Cry for Me Argentina; Music of the Night) with some of the best chorus songs on Broadway (Big Spender, Mame) with some of the funniest songs on Broadway (Sue Me). With additional songs like the Impossible Dream and the one and only Broadway anthem (There's no business like show business), whats not to love about this cd. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars It's all right........2007-06-09

This is a good collection of 50 hits, b-sides and album tracks by The Dave Clark Five. The only US hit that is missing is "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby". There are a few UK hits missing, but that is understandable, since this collection was designed for the US market. The songs are in mono, with the exception of the last three songs which are in stereo. Most of the songs here are great, so I highly recommend getting this collection (if you can find it).

5 out of 5 stars Dave Clark Five - 'History Of The .....' (Hollywood Records).......2007-02-18

Review number 42. Total of fifty solid must-have British Invasion tracks of the Dave Clark Five's work on two CD's. Some say this five piece could HAVE easily been the Beatles. Tunes that'll never grow old are "Bits And Pieces", the rousing "Do You Love Me", "Anyway You Want It", "All Night Long", "I Miss You", the timeless "Catch Us If You Can", "Over And Over" (I've had female friends go nuts when I had this song on my answering machine) and "Maze Of Love". That's just for straters. I don't think there's a single bad song here. Most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars REAL ROCK AND ROLL.......2006-12-20

HARD DRIVING ROCK AND ROLL THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. MIKE SMITH MAY BE THE GREATEST ROCK SINGER OF ALL TIME. "DO YOU LOVE ME" IS MY PERSONAL #1 R&R SONG OF ALL TIME. THEY MAY HAVE PUT TOO MANY OBSCURE AND LESSER KNOWN SONGS ON THIS COLLECTION, BUT I'M HAPPY THAT ALL THE BIG HITS HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. WITH THEIR RECENT NOMINATION TO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, PERHAPS A MODERN RENAISSANCE IS IN ORDER FOR THIS MOSTLY UNHERALDED ENGLISH INVASION BAND.

5 out of 5 stars This Makes Me Glad All Over!.......2006-12-05

The DC-5 charged onto the music scene in 1964 on the heels of the Beatles' first U.S. tour. The DC-5 gave the Beatles a run for their money and, as one of the pioneer groups during the British Invasion, the Beatles and DC-5 were considered top contenders in the music scene. (I still think the Beatles are the top band).

Still, the DC-5 do not disappoint. Standard classics like 1964's "Glad All Over," "Bits & Pieces," are sure to delight as are more obscure gems such as 1964's "No Time to Lose" and the early 1966 treasure, "Try Too Hard." I just love "Somebody Find a New Love," which is my favorite DC5 song. The opening of "At the Scene" sounds a lot like Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Just Like Me." Still, I love the Raiders and I love the DC5, so the whole thing works for me!

Don't try too hard to get this - just order it now and enjoy it. Gear up your cooooooool 1963 Ford Falcon and enjoy those Cool Classics! I love it!

Although Nilsson didn't select the tracks for this two-CD collection drawn from his '60s and '70s work for RCA, Personal Best generously touches on the many sides of his musical personality: the whimsical (his layered version of the Beatles' "You Can't Do That"), the soaring ("Without You," "Don't Leave Me"), and the flat-out oddball (a cover of the Louis Jordan-Ray Charles classic "Early in the Morning"). Holding it all together is his tremendous melodic sense and a voice that was at first gorgeous, then ravaged by the artist's excesses. When he died in 1994, the world lost one of its truest originals. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best from one of the best.......2006-06-21

If you appreciate finely crafted pop/rock music and a one-of-a-kind knockout singer with a 4 plus octave range, it's pretty tough to go wrong with this collection. Harry Nilsson was one of the best ever, and 50 songs aren't enough, but what is here, particularly the period from 1967-1973, is incredible.

I really wanted to correct the plethora of misinformation that appears in "Marty from S.F.'s" review. First, Nilsson first recorded in 1962, not 1964, and that material (originally demos) is currently available. Also, I don't know how many singles Harry actually released (I'm thinking somewhere around 20-24), but it is nowhere near 60. Finally, from 1967 to 1981 (he didn't release anything after 1981), he released 14 albums. This does not include the soundtrack "Skidoo", for which he wrote some material, but certainly can't be considered a Nilsson album. It also does not include Son of Dracula or Aerial Pandamonium Ballet. Dracula (soundtrack to the terrible film) only included one new song (Daybreak) and A.P.B. was a remixed composite of Harry's first two LPs, released to capitalize on his new found popularity and respect after winning a Grammy for Everybody's Talking.

I love that Amazon provides this great forum for sharing POV, but I don't care for those who want to rewrite history. The facts are the facts...don't mess with 'em.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Rest!!!.......2006-03-16

This is a great compilation of Harry Nilsson starting out with his autobiography song 1941 all the way up to his last songs released in 1977 !!! The only problem is they could have added a few more favorites this compilation like Cuddly Toy , The Puppy Song which were included on his Single Cd Greatest Hits also they could have included Kojak Columbo and Who Done It, maybe even the Long version instead of the Single version of Jump into the Fire but overall a nice package!!!

5 out of 5 stars Should'a been 3 discs and the correct track order for Harry.......2006-01-29

Rock history is littered with the bones of artists who were broken by their record companies, RCA were no different, Harry wanted 3 discs and the tracks to be in the order he felt was right. They wouldn't and didn't, not long after he died of a massive heart attack. Not suprisingly really! Still, these ARE some of his greatest gifts to us, sadly you can see how his lifestlye finally ravaged that sublime voice and his pitch was not so perfect, but still an amazing legacy we can enjoy for ever.

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive anthology containing 49 songs..........2004-12-08

Very comprehensive anthology containing 49 songs from 1964 to 1992. Includes a 36 page booklet with an excellent biography with lots of interesting insights and trivia and plenty of cool photos. Normal people would be better served owning either a greatest hits collection or his phenomenal album Nilsson Schmilsson, but of course I'm not normal.

4 out of 5 stars A Broad taste of Harry.......2004-06-05

This is a broad collection of Harry Nilsson tunes from early works such as Cuddly Toy(My Best Friend) to Midnight Cowboy to his Classic Nilsson Smilsson work to the end of the trail when he does his Pussycats album with his voice sounding much labored. There is virtually every memorable tune that Harry has done such as he early 70's sweet "Me and My Arrow" to soft clasics that are joyous renditions such as "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and "as Time Goes By" and his song about New York City. These latter songs have gotten play on the Big Screen with "You've Got Mail" and other romance movies showing that Nilsonn's voice was elagant and beautiful even for today's adult romantic fims. The range is very broad and some songs I feel do not peice together well as the CD tries to capture something during the entire length of Harry's career. It is still a great collection. The great thing about a CD is that you can push a button to by pass a tune to get to those that you love. This Cd gives you a nice swath of Nilsson's career.

Amazon.com essential recording

Balancing raw power with shades of vulnerability, Gaye rose to the top of Motown's roster without the benefit of a supporting vocal group. Whether singing love songs or social commentary, Gaye's voice displays an earnestness and sincerity that are a soul singer's most potent weapons. Among these 47 hits are his memorable duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell along with Motown staples such as "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is," "Ain't That Peculiar," and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." This 2 CD set also covers socially conscious 1970s originals such as "What's Going On," "Mercy, Mercy Me," and "Inner City Blues." Only his last hit, "Sexual Healing," is left out. --Marc Greilsamer

i had the original motown cd...the one i ordered from
amazon was a HORRIBLE sound quality. the outside of the cd
said it was done in 'germany'...the sound was hollow and
scratchy. i returned it with a minimal amt of trouble.

5 out of 5 stars An impeccable collection of classic Marvin.......2005-12-13

I am not used to writing reviews but I had to for this item. This is the most comprehensive collecion of classics from Marvin Gaye, especially the second disc. He has had such an influence from Soul and R&B to Hip-Hop and continues to be a legendary force in music. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Marvin Gaye album, please go with this one. It will give you a balanced and enjoyable experience with the beauty of his music and will leave you wondering why you hadn't done it sooner. I was 18 when I "borrowed" this album from my mother and don't think she will love it as much as I have consistantly loved it for the past 5 years.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon has double listed the 2nd disc.......2005-04-04

The track listing for the second disc has been repeated. There are only twenty (20) songs on the second CD, not forty (40).

BTW, great album. This is the best 'best of' collection/ compilation/ anthology of Marvin Gaye's work, outside of the box set.

5 out of 5 stars Superb anthology .......2004-11-28

Marvin Gaye was a great singer who lived from 1939-1984. He had a tremendous vocal ability that allowed him to sing sweet soul music, politically-aware commentaries, hard funk, disco-ish stuff and eco-friendly classics all with equal conviction. As a boy in 1985 I remember TWO tribute songs to him that charted in the US Top 10 - a measure of the esteem in which he and his music was held. As one of the original Motown artists, he helped to define the golden era of mid-60's pop music, and trumped even this with his great album What's Going On in 1971.

This superb anthology from the Motown vaults is packed with great songs, and I have been a big fan of this record since discovering it in 2001. I cannot recommend this more highly to those Amazon shoppers who may yet be unaware of this great vocalist.

By the way, these Motown Anthology 2CD sets are not to be missed. Try out The Supremes and The Temptations also in this series.

5 stars!!

5 out of 5 stars The Diary of a Motown and Soul Music Legend.......2004-05-18

Now I know that some of you are disappointed that Marv's last hit (at least on the pop charts), "Sexual Healing", is not in this fabulous collection of classic hits but let's face it, it chronicles his time as a MOTOWN artist. So of course they weren't going to include an out-of-label hit even if the hit was viable to that star's career. Same thing they did with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson's anthologies.

Anyway, this 2-CD (or 2-tape) collection of 67 songs, 40-some known hit singles and some album cuts, b-sides and rarities is the PERFECT album for a true artist like Marvin Gaye was. Many cats can only wish that they can have the hit catalogue that this brotha from the Chocolate City had! I mean, he was not only just a popular singer who recorded some of the 20th century's greatest songs and albums known to mankind, but he was also a great writer, producer, arranger, mixer, musician and instrumentalist not to mention he already had a career as a lead singer of two R&B groups in the late-'50s before signing with Motown in 1961 to be a jazz singer (his original intention of rebelling against what people were telling him how he should be).

And then you can't forget his LEGENDARY and AMAZING duets with classic R&B female legends like Mary Wells (the first female superstar of Motown), Kimberly Weston, the wonderful and memorable Tammi Terrell and last but not least the Motown Queen, Diana Ross. So not only has his career spread four decades but in the middle of it, he was able to be in a couple of groups, be a legendary duet partner and he even played in a couple of movies or three.

But anyway back to the anthology set of Marvin! The man's hit career spreads into three or four or even five different periods at a time:

Suave Gentleman (1962-67)
Soul Loverman (1967-70)
Patriotic Ghetto Warrior (1971-1972)
Romantic and Erotic Ladies' Man (1973-1977)
Confessional Ghetto Preacher (1978-1981)

The first CD (full of 20 solo hits and 7 wonderful duets) may be the most interesting of the anthology set. It shows Marvin at first reaching his inner Sam Cooke in the early portion of his career going from "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" to "Baby Don't U Do It" and then finding his own voice slowly from "How Sweet It Is" and then finally finding his vocal POWER in songs like "You" (check out the HIGH note near the middle of the song!) and "Grapevine". And then there's the memorable duets with Tammi Terrell that are the essence of true soul. Marvin & Tammi should both be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just for the five songs listed on the album.

But then again, the second CD of the anthology set can be the most complex! I mean, this is when Marvin Gaye took FULL ARTISTIC CONTROL and gave us the legendary albums WHAT'S GOING ON, TROUBLE MAN, LET'S GET IT ON, MARVIN GAYE LIVE, I WANT YOU, HERE, MY DEAR, and IN OUR LIFETIME (which was Marvin's first entry into the '80s). You would fall in love with the different production of "What's Going On", without so much of the people talking and just the music, it also shows more of Marvin's vocal backings in its beautiful pitch. "God Is Love", even with its short time, is classic MOTOWN with a gospel-soul feel to it. You had a feeling R. Kelly was listening closely to this album while making Step In The Name of Love. "Sad Tomorrows" with its different feel of a bluesy and classical feel and with that soul is different from the album version (Flying High) from What's Going On and it's also breathtaking that you have to play it over and over. "The World Is Rated X" and "You're The Man" is the brotha's finest work as a political preacher as he sung about the social ills of the world and the political administration. And of course songs from the wonderful "Let's Get It On" album is produced brilliantly here. "Just to Keep U Satisfied" is classic doo-wop!

Then you get into the live recording of "Distant Lover" even while edited (for album purposes) and well it's still a masterpiece. "I Want You" and "After the Dance" are classics and of course "Got to Give It Up" is a blue-light in the basement party anthem that is still hot even after all these years. Finally Marvin's later work with "Here, My Dear" and "In Our Lifetime" are produced and helps brings a climatic ending to the entire 2-CD set.

From "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962 where he was in love with a girl but somehow stubborn to his or his woman's feelings to when he was looking for love in 1981's funky "Heavy Love Affair", it's particularly the Diary of Marvin Gaye. Nobody in soul music was like this cat and there will be nobody like him again no matter what you say! Marvin Gaye is forever the Original King of R&B! (TAKE THAT, WHITNEY, HA-HA!)

3 out of 5 stars Shovelware.......2006-01-21

Originally released in 1976, The Argent Anthology is a direct re-issue of the LP. It is not remastered and it has no bonus tracks. While this was good enough at the time, I can think of few bands in need of a remastered "best of" more than Argent.

Nevertheless, there are some excellent songs here (besides the classic Hold Your Head Up). Tragedy is a funky little number and Pleasure could have appeared on a Zombies record.

A revamped Anthology is needed. This single-disc compilation would have to include: Liar, Dance in the Smoke, Bring You Joy, Celebration, Rejoice, Pleasure, God Gave Rock & Roll to You, It's Only Money, Pt. 1 & 2, Hold Your Head Up, Tragedy and Pure Love/Fantasia/Prelude/Pure Love/Finale.

I suggest waiting for a proper collection.

1 out of 5 stars Hold Your Head Down.......2005-12-21

This has to be one of the skimpiest compilations ever made. Based on the success of Rod and companies biggest hit "Hold Your Head Up" the rest of the cuts are mediocre at best. Hold out for Three Dog Night's version of "Liar" , the Kiss version of "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" and anyone else's version of "Time of the Season". Its amazing that the Zombies classic with Rod playing on it can be messed up so badly. So much for inovation. I wonder if Colin Blunstone gave his ok for it. I think not.

2 out of 5 stars Argent deserves better.......2005-08-13

Some serious issues with this release.
It's the epitome of budget hour.
Skimpy short and there are absolutely no liner notes or credits whatsoever.
In addition, this was released not long after CD's came out so sonically it's very lacking and in desperate need of a remaster.
Argent needs an updated Anthology that improves the audio and adds a few cuts that better represent the band.

2 out of 5 stars Far From the Best.......2002-10-02

Of course, I am going to fall even farther afield than some of the other opinions here, but I really like the Argent albums after Russ Ballard left, "Circus" and "Counterpoints" which were Argent at their most zealously progressive. Since no songs from that period are included here, this is, indeed, anything but a best of compilation.

4 out of 5 stars What's With All The Argent Bashing ?.......2001-01-31

I have no idea what all the Argent bashing is down below. Then again, I consider myself more of a Jazzer and Soul Man than rock and roller. Yet, I never complain when tunes like Tragedy, Time of the Season and Hold Your Head Up come on (someone else's) radio. ...And I certainly don't go running to change the station when Steppenwolf, Santana, or the Allman's come on either. That sizzling Hammond does it for me... o.k. Its DEFINITELY not as hard hitting as some f the abovementioned groups, (and I'll have to add Humble Pie when it comes to the rock side of the B3)... but still.. the sizzling Hammond is there and along with Sugarloaf's Green Eyed Lady, I'd have to say that Time of The Season has one of my all time favorite Rock Organ Solos.

Incidentally, if you're interested in getting deeper into the B3 sound, check out Brian Auger and the Oblivian Express as well as Tony William's Lifetime (with Larry Young) !

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not my Devil's Answer.......2006-04-05

American buyers beware: The version of The Devil's Answer on this compilation is the UK single version. In between the release of the UK single and the release of the US version the original vocalist left the band and so the vocal was redone (by the replacement singer, an octave higher and in a somewhat different style), and the two versions sound very different as a result. Given that there was room on this 2-CD anthology for both versions (without having to cut any other track), it's a real shame (from an American buyer's standpoint) that the US version wasn't included.

1 out of 5 stars Atomic Crap.......2005-10-20

These guys suck. I used to think that any number of cheesy 80's metal bands were the inspiration for Spinal Tap, but Atomic Rooster predated them all. Don't waste your money on this garbage - if you're looking for some good, relatively obscure blues based rock, go dig up some Blue Cheer albums.

5 out of 5 stars It's Atomic Not Iron And Rooster Not Kitten.......2004-07-10

A near-definitive comp covering the first four years (five albums) of this intriguing and often misunderstood band and the late Vincent Crane. Every album gets at least 5 tracks, and one (IN HEARING OF) is presented in its entirety, minus one track. That alone is amazing enough, but what's even better is that the selection is representative enough so that this is all you might ever really need of the Rooster. If you're at all curious about the band (or, more properly, bands - - the personnel wavered constantly with Crane the Fripp-like mentor and only constant) do yourself a favor and pick this up. It might pique your curiosity even further, and all of the albums are worth your time. It's also mostly chronological, which makes for an interesting listen. Also, a few non-LP tracks (the great 'Devil's Answer' single included) are thrown in to liven things up as well. The early Rooster was mostly heavy, curiously jazz-tinged riff-rock with lots of organ and piano. Tracks like the archetypically heavy 'Death Walks Behind You' and the utterly haunting 'Nobody Else' (an interesting take on isolation) are standouts. By the time Chris Farlowe took over the vocal chores on the fourth LP MADE IN ENGLAND Crane had steered the sound toward a more soulful soft-funk format (the vocals had always leaned that way anyway) to which Farlowe was perfectly suited, fresh as he was from the ashes of Colosseum. His faux-testifying introduction to the intense, piano-driven 'Breathless' is hilarious. Most fans of the early Rooster scorn the later stuff; personally I like it all and find later tracks like the sweeping 'Can't Find A Reason' and the lovely instrumental 'Moods' quite enchanting. Atomic Rooster were analogous to King Crimson in some respects, not the least of which was Crane's continually evolving musical direction. A great collection from a fondly-remembered and missed man and his bands.

Most pop stars are lucky if they can create one enduring piece of cultural iconography for themselves. Unfortunately for Robert Palmer, his MTV-forged persona as impeccably tailored `80s crooner backed by a band of leggy fashion models largely overshadowed a career that was as eclectic as it was accomplished. Those who know the singer only by his video for "Addicted to Love" arguably don't know Palmer at all. Indeed, during the previous decade his ostensibly blue-eyed soul sensibilities had actually encompassed funk, New Orleans R&B, reggae, rock, and pop both Euro ("Give Me an Inch") and synth Gary Numan's "I Dream of Wires"). But that creative restlessness also seems to be the reason his commercially promising stint in the all-star Power Station (represented here by "Some Like It Hot" and an infectious cover of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong") was so short-lived. And it's perhaps why, after "Simply Irresistible" and the surge of alternative rock essentially marked the end of his MTV prime, his `90s work variously retrenched Palmer in soul (including a rewarding medley of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me"/"I Want You"), torch songs, Caribbean influences, and even Delta blues. This collection ably completes the musical circle Palmer began in the mid `70s, astutely chronicling pop's ongoing battle between style and substance along the way. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars ADDICTED TO ROBERT PALMER ? HERE'S YOUR FIX !.......2007-04-10

If you've just got to have some Robert Palmer music, this is what you want, right here! A 2-CD career spanning collection with 42 songs, it has something for everyone. His early mid-seventies funky rock n' soul songs like Sailin' Shoes and Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, which were AOR radio staples in their time, are here, as is the popular Give Me an Inch, down and dirty Spanish Moon, and big hit Bad Case of Lovin' You (Doctor, Doctor). Also on Disc 1 is Some Guys Have All the Luck, a hit for Rod Stewart. These days when Rod performs the song in concert, he pays tribute to Palmer by showing film clips of his late friend on the big screen over the stage. Disc 2 includes Power Station's Some Like It Hot, and his MTV mega hits Addicted To Love and Simply Irresistible. If you're not convinced Palmer can sing, take a listen to his cover of The Gap Band's Early In The Morning. Case closed. This disc also includes his excellant cover of Marvin Gaye's Mercy Mercy Me(The Ecology)/I Want You medley. Looking over the track list to this album, you may not recognize some of the titles, but listening to this anthology will trigger memories, and you'll soon realize how many of these songs dominated radio playlists from 1974-2001. Robert Palmer Best of Both Worlds: Anthology 1974-2001 will definitely satisfy your craving for the man and his music.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the Many Shades of Robert Palmer.......2006-01-28

This is an excellent and diverse collection encompassing Palmer's entire career (with the exception of "Drive," the blues album he released just before his death in 2003). Those who know him only from his later hits may be surprised-as I admit I was-that Palmer had been recording for over a decade before Power Station, "Addicted to Love," and "Simply Irresistible." All those biggees are here, as well as early hits like "Every Kinda People" and "Bad Case of Lovin' You," but the best part for me was discovering lesser known gems like "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)," "Some Guys Have All the Luck" (bears almost no resemblance whatsoever to the Rod Stewart version), "Know By Now," and his fantastic covers of the Gap Band's "Early in the Morning" and Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)." An underappreciated artist whose range of material was far broader than his American successes would suggest. For any fan of rock, pop, blues, R&B/soul, and even a little techno, this is absolutely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars almost.... missing something.......2006-01-07

Although this is a pretty impressive collection, it is lacking. Having 'Power Station' songs on here is a big, big plus. Although the new release of 'Power Station's' collection is very good, it is nice to have it on here because of Palmer's voice. Also, the track with UB40. Kudos to those tracks present here.
However, not being a big fan of live recordings (they always seem to be lacking also) I wish his hits, like 'riptide' & 'looking for clues' would have been the studio versions.
'You are in my system' & 'Addicted to Love' remixes are good, but the originals really should have been on here as well as the remixed versions.
But any of the tracks from 'Ridin High' or 'Don't Explain' could have been here too. It seems those two wonderful song collections have been ignored. 'Hard Head', 'Witchcraft', 'Aeorplane', 'Housework', 'Goody Goody','Light Years','Your Mother Should Have Told You','Dreams To Remember', 'You're My Thrill', 'Baby It's Cold Outside', and 'Don't Explain' are all fantastic recordings and deserve some recognition. The tracks that are representative of those two cd's are the commercially successful tracks. Maybe that's what an anthology is all about.... I would have thought it was to showcase the talent of the individual.
'Sweet Lies' is a nice suprise on here, as well as 'Spanish Moon', unexpected nicities. 'Wham Bam Boogie','Honey' and/or 'Love Takes Time' would have had a place here too... but alas, in the missing also.
I guess someone as enduring and versatile as Robert Palmer deserves more than just a flashy collection labeled 'Anthology'. One would think he deserves a 'Showcase' collection to show off his non-commercial talent as well as his commercial talent.
The packaging is very nice, I like the inner flip-disc holder method as opposed to others. The booklet and liner notes are very well done... but again missing something.
I would highly recommend including this cd in your collection IF, and only if, you already have 'Addictions' both volumes 1 & 2, 'Ridin High', 'Honey', and 'Don't Explain'. Then, indeed only then would you have a true representation of this fine entertainer that would span ALL of his career.

3 out of 5 stars Some Like It Warm: a missed opportunity.......2005-07-22

There's a a lot of good to said for this collection. While there have been several in the past like "Addictions" Vol. 1 & 2 where he went back and remixed tracks or added new vocals, or "The Very Best Of" album, there had not been a good comprehensive collection of Palmer until this one. Perhaps that's why it's sold as a two disc set. All the hits are here. This includes a few remixed tracks from "Addictions" which may annoy purests, although I think his updated versions of "You Are In My System" is improved over the original. You can understand why he felt he could give a better performance. The new versions of "Give Me An Inch" is beautiful and soulful, and "Every Kinda People" has moving, sweet colors of Marvin Gaye. It includes Power Station tracks and soundtrack songs ("Sweet Lies"). Also the album's 24 bit remastering is top-notch. Everything here is crisp and balanced with very little analog hiss from the originals.

"Anthology" goes from "Sneaking Sally" all the way through the "R & B" albums covering three labels, so you have to tip your hat to Island Records for putting it all together. Yet the collection has some strange quirks. For example, they use the single version of "Get It On (Bang A Gong)", yet they have the album version of "Some Like It Hot". The album ends with a wimper with awful live versions of "Johhny & Mary" and "Looking For Clues" from "Live From The Apollo". His performance was weak and the recording quality is flat and thin. Just a waste where there should have had the originals. Just because it's an anthology does mean every album has to represented especially when the Apollo album is so bad. Some tracks are just lame like "Want You More". On the other hand, it would be a shame to just have "The Very Best Of" album becuase there's so much good stuff that's not on that one that is on "Anthology" like "Man Smart, Woman Smarter", "Pride", "Some Guys Have All The Luck", and more. It's a quality anthology but also misses its potential.

5 out of 5 stars A great Robert Palmer anthology!.......2004-11-17

I very much enjoyed this anthology, I've liked Robert Palmer, for a long time. All great songs are on here and if I were to have one complaint about this compilation, it would be that one of his 80's songs wasn't included - I don't even know the name of it, but I would recognize it if I heard it. I was sorry to not see it on there, but oh well.Anyway, I would recommend this anthology to any pop/rock fan and pop/rock that is soul-flovored. Also a must if you like Robert Palmer!
