Before there was a Destiny's Child there was En Vogue. Once dubbed the Supremes of the '90s after snaring two consecutive number one hits in 1990 and three Top Ten hits three years later, the Oakland-based group went through an identity crisis when lead singer Dawn Robinson left the band in 1997. In 2003 the band was able to regain their equilibrium after Rhonda Bennett, a former regular on the Jamie Foxx Show, joined founding members Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron in the line-up after talks with Robinson and other original member Maxine Jones fell through. Though Robinson’s dash and sass is sorely missed, this new configuration blends pristine vocal arrangements and close jazzy harmonies that approaches some of the original band’s best moments. While there’s some real gems on the disc--like the coy-but-clever "Ooh Boy," the arch ache of "Dissed Him," and the spiteful "All You See," which is as sneering as anything Missy Elliot is putting out--much of the disc just doesn't live up to high water mark of their '90s releases. But that’s not to say there isn’t hope. En Vogue is working with longtime producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy again--who penned the disc’s two best hits--so there’s every chance that the "Funky Divas" will once again perch atop the charts in their lofty stilettos. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

You may not know Dionne Farris' name, but you've heard her voice. Hers were the soaring vocals that powered "Tennessee," the breakthrough hit by alternative rappers Arrested Development. Here Farris steps out on her own with a strong debut called Wild Seed-Wild Flower. She smoothly blends elements of hip-hop and alternative rock while positioning herself as a new kind of R&B divathe anti-Whitney. Farris has a lot more on her mind than "I Will Always Love You." On "Don't Ever Touch Me Again," she tackles child abuse, while on "Stop to Think," she rails against drug addiction. But Farris never sounds preachy, and she even manages to take a Beatles song and make it her own with a slow, funky version of "Blackbird." .--Jim DeRogatis

5 out of 5 stars "Time slips ever fast instantly becoming the past".......2007-06-24

Whatever happened to Dionne Farris? The question poses some merit given that the former singer of Arrested Development made such a great solo debut. She had a very hip and relaxed nature about her with one of the best songs to hit radio during the mid 90's in "I Know." She even served as opening act for the Dave Matthews Band when they were first becoming popular. As for Wild Seed-Wild Flower, I haven't listened to this album(or CD)in quite some time until recently, and it still holds up as a terrific offering of rock, pop, and soul. Plus the gospel tinge in her voice still has that perfect passion that made her songs feel so sobering and uplifting when they played the first time around. I'm sure that "I Know" will one day find a second life when it gets played on future classic pop stations once the music of the 90's becomes retro.

1 out of 5 stars no.......2007-03-13

please do not buy this. she has a great voice, but the only song worth anything on here is the 'i know what you're doing' single....

3 out of 5 stars Wild Seed ~Wild Flower - - actually 3.5 stars.......2006-12-06

This is a good debut from an artist who burst on the scene with a phenomenal single, I KNOW. This song featured a mash of rock, pop & soul that touched a lot of fans across music genres. The only other song on the disc that moved me in the same way is, PASSION - that features a stunning baseline, unstructured melody & terric guitar-heavy chorus.

Other tracks that I still enjoy to this day are:

NOW OR LATER - she really toned it down on this one, her vocals are so sweet & light

11TH HOUR - features spoken word & a pretty melodic beat

WATER - her soulful wails & the construction of the song kind of reminds me of an old Rufus & Chaka Khan song

BLACKBIRD - again features really pretty vocals

Although it's unfortunate that Dionne didn't get to release a sophomore set, this is still a fun album that I continue to enjoy listening to as time goes by.

3 out of 5 stars Great Single - OK Album.......2006-06-01

Great single, ordinary album. Going solo after her stint with Arrested Development, Dionne Farris seemed intent on making a statement of her own. The single, "I Know," promised a lot. Based on a snaking slide groove and a neat vocal hook, it gave the impression that Farris just might be able to break out. Unfortunately, the first solo album suggests Arrested Development without the diversity. Like that band, the musical topics are based on inner thoughts; sort of like cranial soul music. The titles alone give away - "Stop to Think"; "Food for Thought"; "Find Your Way"; Even the song "Passion" approaches the subject of the title as if it were a mental exercise. Naturally, the arrangements are intelligently constructed, perhaps even a bit fussy. If only she could have tapped into the passion that she found on her hit single, this would have been one heck of an album. All in all, there's just too much thinking going on here for the record to be much fun.

5 out of 5 stars awesome album.......2005-11-24

the year was 1995 and I was addicted to the radio. This song was on heavy rotation in spring of 1995, it was the catchy melody of the chorus and funky guitar grooves that caught me. I guess she became a one hit wonder which is sad because she has talent for singing and songwriting and I hope she comes back someday.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent renditions and arrangements of chinese folk tunes.......1998-11-03

I was skeptical at first of this particular CD, but the initial listening converted me. The Shanghai String does an excellent job of representing the feel and emotional content of these chinese folk tunes. Zhou Long arranged the traditional tunes for the quartet, and he did a magnificent job.

Though Robinson's dash and sass is sorely missed, this new configuration blends pristine vocal arrangements and close jazzy harmonies that approaches some of the original band's best moments. While there's some real gems on the disc--like the coy-but-clever "Ooh Boy," the arch ache of "Dissed Him," and the spiteful "All You See," which is as sneering as anything Missy Elliot is putting out--much of the disc just doesn't live up to high water mark of their '90s releases. But that's not to say there isn't hope. En Vogue is working with longtime producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy again--who penned the disc's two best hits--so there's every chance that the "Funky Divas" will once again perch atop the charts in their lofty stilettos. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Grown and Sexy.......2007-07-02

Pounding bass, seductive lyrics, fluid melodies meant for the grown and sexy (man and woman). If you're not shy, you can rock it while you're driving down the highway (roof back, windows down). Rhythms good for working out, be it roller skating, step aerobics, or pole dancing. Be aware, profanity in two songs.

2 out of 5 stars Never, Never, Never Shoulda Bought It!.......2007-04-04

Only two members of the original quartet--Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron--remain on this lackluster release by the Oakland hip-hop vocal group En Vogue. The group is now a trio, with the surviving original members joined by Rhonda Bennett. While their first releases, in the 90s, were joyous and sassy, "Soul Flower" lacks the immediacy and power of that early work. It would perhaps be unfair to catagorize this record as flat-out bad (truly, it's not), but it is the first En Vogue album that I find somewhat forgettable. New fans should begin instead with the girls' stronger efforts, such as Funky Divas, which is still their all-time classic. Also highly recommended are Born to Sing, and Masterpiece Theatre, the latter setting hip-hop arrangements and lyrics to instantly-recognizable melodies from classical music. All of these albums are FUN--which is precisely what "Soul Flower" tries to be, but isn't.

5 out of 5 stars Unified Soul Never Sounded Better.......2007-03-16

After the misunderstood "Masterpiece Theatre" failed to generate commercial buzz outside of their hardcore fanbase, two more line-up changes would take place before their fifth studio effort was released in 2004.

Those worried that with Cindy Herron & Terry Ellis being the only two left from the original nucleus need not worry. Rhona Bennet fills in for Maxine Jones on this set. And what a set...

On "Masterpiece Theatre", En Vogue came close to reaching the creative spark that helped put their second album "Funky Divas" on the map, here it becomes a realized dream.

"Soul Flower" is a consistent blend of neo-soul & (again) stylized R&B courtesy of longtime producers McElroy & Foster who manage to tailor their sound for the times. Though the neo-soul movement by 2004 had already long since cooled. Either way the results are winning.

Again, with vocalization at the fore, En Vogue injects familiar harmonies into the cuts, such as the midtempo opener "Losin' My Mind" which works over a smooth, horn sample quite well. Other highlights include the showstopper "I Do Love You (Piece of My Love)" & breezy, disco-fied urban numbers such as "Ooh Boy" & "Ooh La La". The latter two songs feel as though they could've been lifted from a mid-1970's era Supremes album.

Overall, "Soul Flower" is a record that sits alongside their best work "Funky Divas", even if it contrasts in what makes it special. If "Funky Divas" was reknowned for its soulful amalgam of sounds, "Soul Flower" strikes a chord in its smooth, mature, unified whole. Never trying harder than it should to lay down impeccable grooves, velvety vocal work, & empowered lyrics.

It is a shame this record didn't receive the push it deserved, because this was one of the better R&B products of 2004. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars En Vogue knows how to HOLD ON.......2006-05-16

Wow, how did only 50 percent of the original En Vogue pull this album off? Well, we must take into consideration that all four of the original members have powerhouse voices, and so they can still sound good even without some of its prime members. Maxine and Dawn are gone, but enter Rhonda. Rhonda was a really nice addition to the group. She can sing really well, a necessary tool for an En Vogue member.

"Soul Flower" is a quality album. It does include much sampling, but in this case, it's not a bad thing. My opinion of that is, they wanted to entail some songs that were already successful and add their touch to it because they were already at a disadvantage without Dawn and Max. It works! An example of this is "Everday". This song samples The Staples Singers hit "Lets Do It Again". Its one of my favorites on the album. They didn't sample the entire song, it really was just a "sample". "Heaven" is an alright track. Here, the ladies are saying that heaven hasn't been the same since their men came to earth. This is a four star album because some of the songs aren't as good as others, and some are just fillers. "Ez-A-Lee" is a prime example of that. The song seems rushed and I don't fancy it.

Overall, these ladies are my favorite group of all time. No one has ever touched their voices when they sing together. Keep doing your thing ladies! No matter how many of you it is...

Great music falls far from the hit record list and sales list now adays. The truth is these girls had verly little promotion with SOUL FLOWEr being that it is an independent release, If this had been one of the major labels projects i promise this album would be one of the biggest ones of the year. The album is classic and slept on. Every song has it's own flavor. The blend is incredible. The girls always doign something differetn. Highlights included "STOP" "PIECE OF MY LOVE""DISS HIM""OOH BOY" "MILLION WAYS""ALL YOU SEE".,, the album is a must get...

for anyone who has watched an older and more tired b.b. king perform the last couple years the younger generation might wonder what all the fuss was about. well this album from 1978 will give anyone a textbook lesson on b.b. king. his guitar tone is biting and nasty and this is a time when he really cared about playing the guitar. he makes his guitar sing, his makes multiple bends on one note and even shows some fast licks which is not normally a b.b. trademark.also on the album is johnny winter who does a marvelously restrained lead on the song going down slow. if you only own one b.b. king album this should be the one.

4 out of 5 stars my favorite B.B........2003-02-05

just pulled this one off my shelf after a long time having not listened to it. remembered just how priceless this recording is. anybody that looks at the track listing and thinks "oh dear poo, another B.B. CD with 'thrill is gone', 'how blue can you get', and 'caledonia'", subsequently passing on this one is making a huge mistake. that's what those skip buttons are for (unless, of course, these haven't been played out for you). the tracks with the Winters and the 25 minutes of George Benson in the middle of these are indeed the meat and potatoes. I didn't expect much from Benson, but he is fantastic and brings out the best in Mr. King. their extended jams in "Just A Little Love" are worth the price of this CD alone. fans of B.B.'s guitar-playing will dig this a lot more than those just into his vocals.

    4 out of 5 stars B.B. meets Benson & the Winters.......2000-07-03

This is a release of a show recorded in 1978 in New York; a bit of magic captured when George Benson and Johnny & Edgar Winter join B.B. for a blues clinic.

A couple of killer extended blues jams with George & B.B. trading licks straight from blues heaven.

    Definitely a keeper.

This was previously only available through their website.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2007-06-24

There are currently four different versions of this release circulating. The first came out in 2000 with a slip so you could get three extra songs and a Todd interview by downloading it from the King Bissuit web site and the enhanced cd took you right there. In 2001 JVC in Japan did a version called Live, that included a bonus song which was The Ikon/Freedom Fighters which was a download song. In 2002, this was released again but with the extra stuff on a bonus disc. In 2004 this was released yet again as the Best Of Todd Rundgren Live. This release is made up of three different shows, two of which had already been released. The 1978 show is Live in NYC '78 and the '85 show is A Cappella both of which are currently available in the box set Can't Sop Running. The 5/8/77 show is actually a Utopia concert and is were the bonus The Ikon/Freedom Fighters is from. This show is the best performed of the three. I really wish that they had just released that performance and bypassed everything else. If you're going to get this, make sure to contact the seller and that you get the two disc version like I have. If you can't find that, then go with the import with the bonus song.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2003-08-26

This is a great CD if your a Todd fan, outstanding live performances and good sound quality....if you like this then check out "Back To The Bars".....buy this cd today!

4 out of 5 stars "The Icon" and "Freedum fighter" is very good!!.......2002-07-20

I have a same title CD of Import version. This CD contains a bonus truck: The Icon and Freedum fighter. I think these performances are very good and are the most beutiful and strongest tunes in 70's American hard and progressive Rock. I recomennd Import version, if you want this one.

    4 out of 5 stars the A Capella material could've been better..........2001-01-17

    but the rest is great!

This CD is a compilation of three Todd concerts, all recorded for broadcast on the syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour. The first (and weakest of the three shows) is from Rundgren's A Capella tour in 1985. Starting with an interesting version of "Real Man," Todd and his 10-piece `band' (actually 10 vocalists--there were no instruments on the tour--tapes were used when necessary) played, clapped, and stomped thru a selection of songs from his latest album, and a smattering of hits. The highlight here is the always beautiful "Can We Still Be Friends." With all the people onstage, the vocal arrangement really comes to life.

"The Last Ride" kicks off the next group of tunes, this time from the 1977 Schaffer Music Festival in New York. Todd wails on the guitar with reckless abandon, and hits all the high vocal parts with ease. After a medley of "Eastern Intrigue" and "Love of the Common Man," Rundgren bursts into the rocker, "Couldn't I Just Tell You." Always a crowd pleaser, this particular rendition is outstanding.

The last six tracks are taken from The Bottom Line in '78 (note to the tape traders out there: this is not the same Bottom Line show that circulates). Rundgren's voice is a bit weak on "Real Man" (the high notes are notoriously difficult in a live setting), but aside from that, Todd's in fine form--both vocally and instrumentally. As you'd expect, "Black Maria" is stunning, and the medley of "I'm So Proud," "Ooh Baby Baby," "La La Means I Love You" and "I Saw the Light" is always enjoyable.

As a special bonus to those who purchase the CD, you can download 3 more songs that don't appear on the CD ("Honest Work," "Freedom Fighters" and "Born to Synthesize"), plus an interview with Todd from August 2000. If you'd rather not download all this, there's a coupon inside the CD allowing you to get the bonus material on CD. Collectors take note: the bonus CD lists the second track as "The Wheel"--this is incorrect. One other thing I wanted to mention... Yes, all of the tracks from the New York shows are also on the excellent Back to the Bars album--these are not the same performances.

To sum things up, this is another great release from the folks at King Biscuit. Whether you're a long-time Todd fan, or just discovering this music, this disc is a sure bet.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here.......2001-01-02

This CD is O.K. but it doesn't offer much that can't be found on other live Todd or Utopia CDs. The Acapella versions of Real Man and the Lost Horizon medley were "different" but I didn't like 'em. I'll take the full band versions every time. The other songs were no better or worse than what can be heard on Back to the Bars. The mix/recording quality is only fair.

Additionally, I found the fade-in and fade-out of each song detracted from the feeling of a live event. I would have preferred cross fading one song into the next.

If you are looking for some interesting live recordings of Todd, check out the "Somewhere/Anywhere" CD. It has rare live recordings of songs from the first Runt Album, A Utopia version of Open My Eyes, Utopia cover versions of Beatles and Who songs, Etc.
