Throughout his long tenure with New Grass Revival, John Cowan sometimes sounded like a frustrated country-bluegrass singer yearning to let loose a rock & roll wail. On this self-titled album, his second solo record, Cowan more often resembles a frustrated pop-rock singer yearning to get back to the country heartland. The album was produced by Cowan's friend and fellow pop-country vagabond Wendy Waldman. The 13 tracks encapsulate Cowan's stylistic reach, from the bluegrassy "My Heart Will Follow You" and the extended instrumental jam "Sligo" to the computerized funk of "Roll Away the Stone" and the arena-rock posturing of "High Above the Powerlines." Several of the better tunes are among the more laid-back: the jazzy "Nothing but the Blues," the slinky "Mississippi Delta Time," and a lovely Celtic-flavored cover of Merle Travis's "Dark as a Dungeon" that shows off Cowan's sirenlike tenor without overwhelming the song.

As the lead singer of New Grass Revival, über tenor John Cowan always brought an urgency and bold authority to the experimental form his bandmates forged out of bluegrass. So it's no surprise that his versatility carried over to his next ventures, blue-eyed soul and prog-rock, or to his current eponymously named acoustic ensemble, where he's joined by Jeff Autry (guitar), Wayne Benson (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), and Noam Pikelny (banjo). Their kick-off tune, "Carla's Got a New Tattoo," in which a locomotive rhythm propels Bob Lucas's cheeky lyrics about the cool of body art, recalls the legendary New Grass at their zenith. But the band quickly switches gears to the dark blues of "Misery and Happiness," in which Cowan, powering down his force-of-nature voice to make room for ghostly harmony by Patty Griffin, stunningly evokes the searing pain of redemptive love gone cold. The highlights here are many, and a lot of them bear the stamp of Cowan's friend Darrell Scott, beginning with the spiritual "6 Red Birds (In a Joshua Tree)," which Cowan and Scott wrote together, and segueing to "With a Memory Like Mine," an exquisite song of the crazy-making grief of war (written by Scott and his father, Wayne). But the collaboration that will long stick in the mind is "Drown," a harrowing story song of child molestation. Cowan and Scott (who contributes plaintive piano accompaniment) wrote it together, but it's Cowan's own story of violation, and it's one of the bravest songs of the year. All in all, this is a sterling collection of unusually fine material, delivered in Cowan's trademark ice-and-electricity vocals. --Alanna Nash

Genre-bending innovators and adventurists.......2006-11-24
Playing Time - 46:47
Who They Are: Genre-bending innovators and adventurists
What They Do: Progressive newgrass full of vocal and instrumental pyrotechnics
Little Known Facts: Some of Cowan's early rock and blues bands included Everyday People, The Sky Kings, Duckbutter and Grooveyard.
The Songs: "Carla's Got A New Tattoo" opens the set with barn-burning instrumental work and inspired vocal spunk. The soulful "Misery & Happiness," a lamentation on the bittersweet experience of finding love and losing it, features gorgeous harmony vocals from Patty Griffin. "Working In The New Mine" harkens back to old school bluegrass, with a driving tempo, stellar picking, charged modulation, and acrobatic vocal harmonies. A melodic "Back To Your Arms" and Mark Simos' "Hurting Sure" are modern country masterpieces that would sound right at home on country radio. "In Bristol Town" is a ballad with some old-time Appalachian character. The 6-minute closing track, "Drown," is the most emotional and controversial. It's a disturbing and detailed disclosure about child molestation. Based on personal experience as a seven-year-old survivor, John felt it was a tragic story that needed to be told. Cowan collaborated with Darrell Scott on "Drown" and "Red Birds (In A Joshua Tree)." Darrel and his father (Wayne) penned "With A Memory Like Mine," a sad song of a son returning frm war in a flag-draped casket.
The Musicians: Besides Cow on lead vocals and bass, the band's current lineup is Jeff Autry (guitar, bouzouki), Wayne Benson, (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), Noam Pikelny (banjo), and Luke Bulla (fiddle, mandolin). All but Pikelny contribute harmony vocals.
Of Special Note: Six guests who are "special" offer up vocals (Patty Griffin), piano (Darrell Scott), cello (Bryn Bright), bass harmonica (Mickey Raphael), percussion (Giles Reaves), and "sonic onslaught" (Jay Joyce).
Any Recommendations: The studio effects are a little overstated in a few places. Sound effects, echo, reverb and looping sounds have their place, and producer Jay Joyce could've used them a bit more sparingly to create certain intimate moods and soul-stirring settings.
Their Bumpersticker Might Say: "Johnny C" for Secretary of Musical Defense!
The Bottomline Is: Explosive Ebullience with a capital "E."

Beats the 2nd album, good song selection.......2006-09-08
I like the return to a little more acoustic sound than on the previous John Cowan CD "Always Take Me Back." That one had some superb novelties, like the Yes and King Crimson covers, but it lacked cohesion, and the original songs were not as good as on John's debut. This one is closer to the New Grass Revival vibe with strong songs throughout and some expert instrumental passages, too. John's cover of The Blue Nile (Tomorrow Morning) is a wonderful choice, and it sheds light on the underrated songwriting of Paul Buchanan. With Sam Bush's recent album "Laps In Seven" also sounding great, these are good times for New Grass Revival fans.
Bottle this young man's voice and sell it!.......2006-09-01
First and foremost, John Cowan's resonating tenor voice would send shock waves through a polar ice cap. The hair on my arms stood up the entire concert. The way the album is mastered, it's one long continuous medley that's over far too quickly. The arrangements are laid out in an order that flows like a river. John mixes styles on this recording that range from blues to southern rock to Celtic soul in a most indelible piece of work. Cow band rocks on this, especially fiddler Shad Cob and mandolinist Wayne Benson. Didn't think it was possible for JC to improve, but he continues to outpace himself. One for the collector's list and posterity. Tattoo transfer was a really cool bonus!
Possibly the best yet.......2006-06-29
Best work by Cowan yet. No let down from start to finish though the last song "Drown", which deals with the reality of child molestation, seems out of place for this particular album. Regardless, it's an excellent mix and masterful production. Certain enjoyment for any newgrass fan.
I dare you to sit still during this CD, it s not possible!.......2006-06-26
Bought it 2 weeks ago on release date and have been listening to it every day since. Still not tired of it. The music is a large heaping dollop of bluegrass (excuse me New Grass)a dash of country with a pinch of southern rock, a bit of gospel, and a little mountain music tossed in, served up with a serious jolt of reality (referencing last cut "Drown").This group is in unison with one another and this Cd reflects their individual awsome talents especially John Cowans incredible vocals. That man can belt a tune in any category from rock to country and everything in between.

What do you get when you cross country music with prog rock? Something not unlike this recording by former New Grass Revival singer John Cowan. Cowan's formidable voice has always been bigger than bluegrass, and on Always Take Me Back he leaves no doubt that his roots are as firmly planted in rock dramatics as in the string music of his Kentucky upraising. If you are among the select few who have always yearned to hear Yes's "Long Distance Runaround" done without irony and with a drum program, banjo, and fiddle backing (it works better than you would think), or the recitation from King Crimson's "In Discipline" pasted over a banjo instrumental, you've come to the right place. Cowan's own tunes are well-crafted tales of his family relationships and upbringing, sung with a power that occasionally dwarfs his semi-acoustic backing. Bluegrass, like prog rock, has always been the province of virtuoso instrumentalists, so perhaps the combo should not be so surprising. It is not meant as a value judgment to say that if Journey had a banjo they might sound like this. --Michael Ross

The most perfect voice in music...........2002-08-05
As a HUGE fan of John's, I was so excited when the new album came out! No one has the soul and conviction he can put into a song! I love "Sittin' on Top of the World," I'm sure Jimmy Martin would be shocked by John's funk version! :0 Also, "Someone Give Me A Stone," made me smile! The ballads are John's forte, you can never quite explain how great he is until someone hears him sing! Buy the album and definitely check out the band if they get near your town!
How can he get any better!.......2002-05-08
I have followed John Cowan from the New Grass Revival to his own band now. Just when you think his music can't get any better, it does. The new album Always Take Me Back just blew me away. The production on this album is incredible. It covers ground from new grass, bluegrass, rock , country, soul, gospel. I especially liked Someone Give Me a Stone, which has a Celtic, funk sound with a rock edge. All of the songs on this Cd are good. There are no bad cuts. I got a tear in my eye hearing My Fathers Field. That brought back memories. Everyone should hear John Cowan's music. Its great and getting better.
I wish you were here to see it............2002-04-19
Of the three solo efforts by John Cowan, this is fast becoming my favorite. I have had the pleasure of seeing John's band on multiple occasions and to watch it grow and evolve.
This current line up is hot. This album contains a great mix of emotiontionally charged tunes with a few "just plain fun" tracks.
Scott Vestal shines with his progressive approach to the Banjo and his Roland driven synth Banjo.
John Cowan is growing with leaps and bounds in the songwriting department.
But it is the *Voice* that is the star of this show.
If you are unfamiliar with John Cowan you really should check him out and this album is a great starting point.
It is difficult to pidgeon hole the musical style into any one genre but here is a voice that demands wider recognition.
Buy this record, you will not regret it.

Cowan Just Keeps Giving His Best.......2002-04-11
This is John Cowan's second solo CD since he formed his own band and it's just a wonderful as the first one. I really couldn't possibly choose which one I like better. There are two songs on this CD that really pack a punch. ``18 years,'' is a song about his father's painful legacy and ``Blood'' also deals with his family and his past. Powerful stuff. All of the songs left me humming and remembering the lyrics. I just can't listen to this CD enough. John's voice, as usual, is in fine form. He has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
THIS IS A MUST CD...John Cowan Band at their best!.......2002-04-04
I have been a John Cowan and New Grass Revival fan for that last 10 years and out of all the John Cowan and NGR CD's this one tops them all! If I were to pick a favorite song on this cd...I CAN"T because they are all incredible Love alone, Call Me, Someone Give Me A Stone, Blood...they are all just GREAT!! Jeff Autry, Scott Vestal, Passi Leppikangas, and Randy Kohrs (replaced by Luke Bulla after the recording) are incredible musicians and they did an excellent job on this cd- you can't find and better musicians out there! Also if you haven't seen these guys live YOU MUST...so head out to the nearest festival and catch these guys and check out johncowan.com This

John Cowan is one of my favorites. My love for him goes back to his days in New Grass Revival. I look forward to the next CD.
CD review.......2001-07-01
I bought this CD thinking it was going to be like "The New Grass Revival" ,but, This CD has more of a rock'n'roll sound to it. But, still is a nice CD.
An Extraordinary Talent!!.......2001-06-28
I first heard John Cowan back in the 1980's when he was part of The New Grass Revival and they toured with Leon Russell. I went to hear Leon, but it was John Cowan's voice that really gave me goose-bumps...and it STILL does! This CD is a wonderful mix of bluesy ballads, love songs that you'll want to play for someone special and up-tempo tunes. It crosses over boundaries into blues, bluegrass, soft rock and pop. It's been a long time since I've found a CD as rewarding. I can play it repeatedly, even on long trips in my car, and never get tired of it. John Cowan's talent is a special gift from God! Buy this CD if you want to hear a great singer, songwriter and musician.
Who else can hold a note for 24 bars and more?.......2001-05-28
I'm proud to tell you John, our 13 yr old daughter LOVES this CD. Her tastes might just be growing beyond the boy bands, thank goodness. As for the music, it's all terrific.
Amazing Vocals.......2001-04-03
This album captures the greatest singer of our time. See him live! Not only does he sing better than all others, he does so while playing the bass! If you're a musician you know how hard that is. These songs are uplifting and imaginative and John Cowan deserves more recognition than he gets. Truely unbelievable.

Could have been a great recording.......2005-02-12
I considered the only review available, and purchased, but found audibility real problem (on my Bose system). Sometimes it cannot be heard, then I have to hurry and turn it down before I blast my eardrums out. I have become familiar enough with the CD to just avoid a few of the tracks, though I wish that were not the case.
One of the best choral works ever.......1999-09-11
I've listened to many choral cds over the years, but this one, by far, is the best that I have ever had the pleasure of listening. It simulates an evensong complete with the lessons. The balance is great, the sound quality is exceptional. All choral music lovers should immediately purchase this cd.

And I don't even listen to Bluegrass, usually!.......2005-01-03
Let me be up front about this: Bluegrass isn't the kind of music I'd normally listen to. Don't get me wrong, I generally have a pretty wide taste in music. (I'm still working on rap & most hip-hop, but I don't think that stuff is written for a small-town, 40-something white guy like me anyway.) I just never had much interest in listening to bluegrass, but when a friend loaned me a copy of Scott's CD, my musical curiosity got the best of me. It's not just a great "swampgrass" CD, it's just plain good music, a must-have for the well-rounded listener's collection.
Astounding, groundbreaking contemporary bluegrass.......2002-10-12
I can't say enough about this CD. It was like an epiphany when I first heard it. I wanted to quit my job, leave my wife and four kids, and just move to Tahiti or the Sudan or somewhere and just listen to this CD constantly. But I knew I'd not live long if I did that, so I came back down to earth and just listen to it as much as I can while still working at my job and dealing with the ball & chain and rugrats. Scott's playing makes Earl Scruggs and Bela Fleck sound like ham-handed visigoths, and his singing makes Vince Gill and Dudley Connell sound like Ernest Tubb and Narvel Felts. It's just a great, great collection of music.
Florida Grunge-Grass Burns!.......2002-09-04
Scott Anderson is a talented banjoist, mandolinist, guitarist, photographer, singer, song-writer, pharmacist, and after years honing his musical craft with other bands such as Endless Highway he has melded his many musical influences into a singular vision that is artistically VERY satisfying. This album, produced by the amazing Scott Vestal (who also takes a guest solo on "the one"), features Wayne Benson (of Third Tyme Out) on mandolin, Rob Ickes on Dobro, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle - you get the idea.... Best-in-the-business musicians playing hot arrangements of fantastic songs. Scott shares lead singing duties with Gabe Valla and Darren Wainwright, and the original tunes sparkle amongst the carefully chosen covers.
I recommend this album highly and I recommend a live Scott Anderson Band show just as highly.

Super-charged newgrass!.......2002-04-14
Caution: this hot new highly-arranged newgrass album includes drums and various other unconventional bluegrass instruments on some cuts. The duo of mandolinist Chris Emerson and guitarist Ty Bennett assembled a very impressive all-star lineup of special guests to assist them on "Candlewyck," their self-titled debut album (Votive Records-2112) which includes twelve original songs. Any album with the likes of Don Rigsby, John Cowan, Terry Baucom, David Grier, Shawn Lane, Russell Moore, Kenny Smith, Larry Rice, Michael Faith, and Sammy Shelor is bound to be a winner, which "Candlewyck" most definitely is. From North Carolina, songwriter Ty Bennett first began writing and playing the age of thirteen on his mother's piano. With a degree in classical composition and music theory, he has always maintained a deep passion for performing, writing and recording all forms of music, from bluegrass to jazz, rock to gospel. Aside from his writing and playing in Candlewyck, Ty also works as an arranger, producer and instructor in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chris Emerson also provides an exciting mandolin style to the Candlewyck mix. With innovation and technical virtuosity, Chris turns heads with his personalized blend of new music. Equally adept on acoustic and electric mandolin, he has developed a style that blends traditional conventions with brand new ideas. Chris taught himself to play by studying and listening to David Grisman, Bill Monroe, and Matt Mundy. His affinity for many diverse genres of music such as jazz, classical, Celtic and rock is also very evident in his playing. A real showcase for Ty's distinctive songwriting, the album kicks off with the hard-driving song, "Whatcha Gonna Say," that kicks...ala Newgrass Revival. John Cowan's lead vocal is tightly supplemented with harmonies from Russell Moore and Time Cashion. Then, "Firemen" has Don Rigsby singing about how a fireman's got to do it by the Book. Brad Hudson sings "Little Jasper," an uptempo ballad about a little dog left behind when Atlanta burned.. "Find Me" features Tim Cashion on vocals and includes drums in the mix. It is also a showcase for David Johnson who plays fiddle, banjo and dobro on the song. The next Ty Bennett song to receive an all-star interpretation is Shawn Lane's singing of "Things I've Got to Pay," with Russell Moore and Chris Jones singing harmony. Candlewyck has a strong affinity for instrumentals, with over 50 percent of this debut album featuring vocal-less offerings. "Rusty," "Crooked Creek," and "Wilkes County Breakdown" are hot fiddle tunes which I wished would've been mixed with more of the mandolin breaks and less chunking on the left side (which was obviously mixed strongly to provide the drum-like backbeat to their music). The latter tune did, in fact, include drums which, in my opinion, could've been toned down in favor of more of Barbara Lamb's fiddle. "Give Me A Minute" is a short jazzy interlude with only mandolin and guitar. "Mercy Percy" is a super-charged, high-voltage instrumental with a unique sound that includes electric mandolin, bass, drums, steel guitar. The jazzy "Betsy's Lullaby" retires the banjo in favor of piano, guitars, mandolin and percussion. Saxaphone and piano are featured to close the album on a jazzy note "Just So You'll Know." Well actually, a stormy guitar/mandolin duo surprise the casual listener with a short bonus closer.
Chris and Ty are two young guys who are pioneers -- explorers tapping creative energies and youthful exuberance. They're obviously respectful of the bluegrass tradition, but their music pushes the envelope into Newgrass and Americana territory. Candlewyck creates a boiling cauldron of fresh sounds with elements of bluegrass, rock, jazz, folk, country and classical music. Their destination is a shining light on the horizon. They are promising new talents that we'll be hearing more about. There's a strong following of young folks for their kind of music. This album probably isn't for your typical traditional bluegrass fan. I, however, particularly enjoyed the varied hot ensembles that were put together for each highly-arranged song on this project. I liked the diversity found in their music, but perhaps the overall project may have suffered a tad bit from a slight lack of musical continuity. Nevertheless, Candleywyck is made up of two very talented young guys with a gift, and I look forward to seeing how they channel all that energy and skill into their next project into uncharted waters....
