Gerald's World

Gerald's World

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
In a genre often overwhelmed with flash and flamboyance, Gerald Levert is a low-key love man. The son of O'Jays belter Eddie Levert, Gerald has served up a string of hits since the mid-'80s, either with the trio LeVert ("Casanova"), the '90s supergroup LSG ("My Body"), or as a solo artist. Yet despite his sustained success, he remains underappreciated, which is a shame because what the gruff-voiced singer lacks in Q-ratings he makes up for with his rugged delivery of romantic songs. His first CD since 1999's G is another collection of tough but tender R&B--grown-up in focus but laced with just enough edgy attitude. The down-home, late-night "Soul Mate" and the unabashedly sentimental ballad "Made to Love Ya" find Gerald testifying passionately about love and life's ups and downs. Without breaking a sweat, he gives better-known superstars something to aim for. --Amy Linden

4 out of 5 stars The Man Who Owns The World Of R&B.......2007-03-08

LeVert has the smooth, sweet-talkin' loverman thing down so well by now that he can practically sing an entire album without breaking a sweat or even thinking twice about what he's saying. And, on Gerald's World, he's as smooth and as sweet-talkin' as ever. Unlike some singers Gerald never hooked up with R.Kelly and he never needed to because Gerald has the type of voice that can sing anything. The single Made To Love Ya and the remix was staright slow jam bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-09

This is one of the best albums Gerald put out. It is so good this is my third time purchasing it. If you are on a tight budget and just want to a Gerald Levert album I suggest this one or Groove On. Each time Groove On is misplaced I search hi and low to get a replacement. It has not been out of my collection since it debuted, same for Gerald's World.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2002-11-02

Loved this cd.I feel it is his best yet!!
My favorite is G Spot,Too Much Room,Raindrops..I like them all and would recommend this cd..Good listening.

4 out of 5 stars Gerald does it again.......2002-10-04

There seems to be no stopping Gerald LeVert. You normally would get sick of people for release one album per year, but unlike most artists, Gerald's stuff is always good.

It's hard to pick favorite tracks on this album, but I'm gonna have to go with the two songs he released: "Made To Love Ya" and "What Makes It Good To You". And aside from being a dope singer, Gerald is still an impressive storyteller. "DJ Played Our Song" talks about sudden uneasiness stemming from a lovers-turned-friends relationship, "Same Ol'" goes through trust and accusations, and "Got Love" is a basic love proposal for all ladies in need of it. However, one concern I have is that Gerald usually says something inadvertently that may offend a few female listeners. "What You Cryin' About" is about his girl constantly being upset with him for no apparent reason, and he says "It ain't that time of the month/That excuse don't work, don't front". That doesn't make the song any less enjoyable, though.

I would have given this about five stars except for two things: he should have gotten better background singers for "#1"; and this album, like many other albums nowadays, have too much of a good thing. The album ends with a bonus track: a remix of "Made To Love Ya", which is really only tolerable, and the album is already 70 minutes long WITHOUT that track, thus making it 75 minutes long. Oh well, it's still time well spent.

5 out of 5 stars It's "GERALD'S WORLD", and we're listening to it!.......2002-09-30

I have always known that Gerald Levert has a masterful voice, but he was just one of those artists that I didn't have to have in my collection. If I bought it, then I bought it, and if I didn't, then I didn't-no sweat here. I have heard quite a few songs from this balladeer, and I can truly say that this latest offering is the best of the best! Gerald have never strayed far from the norm when it came to his love songs, but this time, it seems that he went above and beyond to make a lasting impression. The songs still have that old school groove, but a little updated flavor have been inserted to make each selection stand out on it's own. I have repeated this disc over and over and still find myself amazed that I am recommending it to all my people. I may not have collected all of his disc, but I am bold enough to say that THIS is one of his best!

5 out of 5 stars Welsh passion/English art songs.......2007-06-17

Bryn Terfel brings astonishing energy, not to mention eardrum-rattling dynamic range, to these English art songs. Frankly, his passionate, sometimes over the top interpretations work for me, injecting virility into songs that could easily become effete in the hands of a more traditionally "English" singer.

As always, DG's sonics are superior. Where a few others have found overly processed sound I simply find superlative engineering that manages to handle Terfel's sometimes overwhelming voice while still capturing the wide range of colors and timbres he injects into every piece.

Malcolm Martineau, by the way, provides first rate accompaniment, also captured with warmth and brilliance by DG's Tonmeister.

5 out of 5 stars "A great lower baritone voice.......incredible songs,".......2006-07-19

Bryn Terfel has one of the most amazing voices. To top it all he has this real passion when he sings. This is a must have for ANY music fan...

The song selections are great....wonderful classical tunes. Many of the lyrics are by Robert Louis Stevenson who, well, we know his reputation.

My favorite song: Whither Must I Wander?

5 out of 5 stars ENGLISH ART SONGS..........2006-07-17

Terfel does a fine job with these pieces.

Especially fine are the Vaughan Williams and Butterworth songs.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the male music student.......2005-08-17

As a music student I have found this cd to be a priceless tool. With the wide range of artists Terfel has used in this collection it is a great way for begginers to start to explore wonderful pieces of fantastic composers that would otherwise be unknown. While many would be familiar with the NYSSMA standard "The Vagabond" (which is beautifully presented) I hope that future teachers and professionals would take the time to search through the rest to find songs to not only raise interest in the different composers but feed their passion for the art of music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Recording.......2005-05-09

This Blend of English art song is fantastic a must have for any serious bass-baritone. Not only the always amazing and tremendous interpretation of song by Terfel but especially in the Finzi and Williams do we finally, I reitterate Finally, hear the story of the Young composers passion come out! Also another plus to Terfel, we hear the best bass baritone sound that I think I have ever heard from him! I have listened to every CD that he has made to date including the new silent noon and this is still my most frequently used selection. Also Coach accompanist take a listen to the way that Martineau plays this music it is infactuating! If you buy a Bryn Terfel CD I would reccomend this one!

Every once in a while an album just stops you in your tracks. Typically it comes at you from left field, bowling you over with its imaginative artistry and beauty. Such is the case with this unprecedented collaboration between Cameroon's Richard Bona, Congo's Lokua Kanza and Paris-born Gerald Toto, whose parents are Caribbean. This surprising collaboration (which sounds little like their solo work) strips songs down to a bare minimum, with the three singers alternately singing lyrics, melody lines, harmonies, and even staccato rhythms. Conventional guitar, percussion, and other instruments occasionally provide spare backing (such as on Bona's "Kwalelo" and "Ghana Blues"), but the meat of this album is always in those voices. Melding their instruments into soulful but haunting vocal calliopes, the group singing illustrates the entire range of the African Diaspora Toto's "L'endormie" sounds like a cross between atmospheric electro-rockers TV On The Radio and delta blues legend Robert Johnson while his "Help Me" is stripped down soul. Undoubtedly one of the top albums of 2005. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars three voices.......2007-03-24

Three fine musicians, a celebration of the human voice, and of spontaneity. Some of the songs are idiosyncratic and of the moment, while others will stick with you.

5 out of 5 stars awesome blend of macferrin and other influences.......2006-12-13

Probably my second best purchase of the year, or tied for first. It is amazing how unknown albums like this slip through the cracks when so much "famous" commercial junk gets sold in the millions. These musicians are smart, and have managed to put together an album where every song is interesting if not fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars This is a masterpiece.......2006-10-01

I'm a Richard Bona fan but new to Gerald Toto and Lokua Kanza. I know about the producer Daniel Richard who is also the CEO/President of Universal Jazz France. Daniel is responsible for signing Richard, Salif Keita, Meshell Ndegeocello. My girl and I listen to this and bug out. These are 3 musical friends who did their 4 songs at home and traded files. It sounds like one project and a lot of fun. You can tell they are inspired and respectful of each other. Buy this and tell a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Toto Bona Lokua.......2006-07-16

I am not a musical genious nor a writer of reviews, only a lover of world music. But on this CD I had to put in my two cents: Get it. Now. It has risen to the top of my favorites list. I agree with other reviews (and grieve!) that it is too short, and am broken hearted that there will probably never be a chance to catch these three artists performing this material together on one stage. Don't let that stop you from adding this masterpiece to your collection.

3 out of 5 stars A nice addition to one's Bona collection.......2006-03-09

As I will purchase almost anything with Ricahrd Bona on it, I noticed the ad for this recording in one of the "major" jazz mags. It's not a thick work, clocking in at under forty minutes. But it's terrific. Not surprisingly, it's rhythmn heavy, with some interesting vocal arrangements too.
In a lot of ways, it reminds me of Tribalsitas, which was also a one-off collaboration of stars. (Which, like this one, never goes too far from my CD rotation rack...).

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......2005-09-25

There are some unique and interesting songs of this album. Unfortunately the performance does not shine. I found the singing and accompaniment a bit slow and monotonous and uninspired. Furthermore, it was difficult to understand the words at times (indistinct enunciation). There are a few exceptions: tracks 3, 4, 9, 20, 21 I gave 3 stars in iTunes; all the rest got two stars or less. If you want beautiful, traditional choral music, I recommend any of the albums featuring the Cambridge Singers over this collection.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

4 out of 5 stars One thing's for sure you speak for Grown &Sexy R&B.......2007-03-08

Gerald Levert returns with another amazing CD of grown and sexy ballads that real R&B music fans can like. Gerald Levert shines on the slow jam tracks Duty Calls and the two singles released One Millon Times and So What If You Got A Baby. The production is polished and ideal for quiet storm formats and the guest appearances that so often saturate a record like this are noticeably absent and Gerald will always be the teddy bear.

Hey everybody, understand, we've all got to grow up sometime. All the baby making music was fine, but the brother felt he had something to say about conditions. And I applaud him. Too often, these days, entertainers have nothing to say, even in the love songs. THE BROTHER GREW UP!

5 out of 5 stars "The greatest R&B singer of my generation".......2006-11-17

First of all let me adress that that I too am deeply hurt and saddened by the utimely passing of Gerald Levet, he was truly legeng in his own time. I really didn't write this review to talk about this album although it's a great album. See I was born in the mid seventies and to me he was what Marvin Gaye Barry White, and Teddy Pendergrass was to the generation of my parents. I now see how they felt when Marvin Gaye died back in 1984 and I am devestated. See all I listen too is the true greats of music be it soul, funk, jazz, or rock and I could see the apple didn't fall too far from the tree in the case Gerald. He was the ultimate soul singer who passionate pleas to woman made men really wanting to step their games up so to speak. See in this day and time we have very few artist who transcends their respective genres of music and Gerald was one of them. Just two weeks I purchase his group Levert's album Bloodline off of Amazon from a private seller for about thirty bucks. That's how much a fan I was (and still) of Gerald's music, which by the way copleted my whole Levert and Gerald Levert collection.

See to me, he was truly the last of the great baritone singers of our time and one of the true "real man voices" of soul music that is rarely heard in todays music. See he comes from a bloodline of great singers (no pun intended), such as his dad the legendary Eddie Levert of the O'Jays. Just a couple years ago I was just so dissapointed at the state of hip-hop and music in general that I decided to go back to where music had substance and style. While doing this I came across a greatest hits cd of Levert and started to listen to the first track on it fom their first album Bloodline called Pop,Pop,Pop,Pop,Goes My Mind. By hearing that song It took me back to that summer of 1986 back home in D.C. playing with my friends and and chasing girls. See, Gerald bridged the gap between the old and the new generations which was one of the reasons I still listened to curent R&B. But now I and many others will have huge void in ours hearts because of his passing. Every year you could expect an album release by Gerald just like my parents every year back in the 1970's saw a new release by the O'Jays and both were always great. My condolensces to his family and friends, especially Eddie who he was so close to. And last may his music live on forever in our hearts and may God bless his soul. We all love you and thanks for all the great memories we'll never forget. R.I.P. Brother

Ok exactly why did G waste his time on this album. It literally falls short of what he did for Stroke of Genius and G Spot.I hate to compare but he tries too hard at making a Marvin Gaye album[What's Going On].I suggest next time he tries at doing himself instead of something he isn't because it ain't working

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2004-06-09

I generally don't listen to country music, but this French version of it is amusing and entertaining. Some of his other CDs have more of a rock feel but I would call this one country.

I took one star away because I was dissappointed with song #2 (J'en reve encore). I love the moody riff at the beginning and I think this song really had potential to be great, but de Palmas ruins it by adding too many cheesy keyboard effects and a really boring chorus.

The catchy tunes do help you learn French, and de Palmas is definitely talented.

Yes! I wore this CD out as the DJ at French camp, although cabin cleanings were mostly reserved for Mylene Farmer (another great French singer). The songs on this CD is really good, and he's pretty cute too!D

5 out of 5 stars Camp listener.......2003-08-20

During french camp in MI, we had to clean up our cabins every single day, and since we are not allowed to listen to american music for the "experience" of it all, we got to listen to this CD while we were cleaning. At first, we were all disheartened by the sound of French music, but after only a day or two, it became our morning routine to listen to, because it was so soothing and upbeat at the same time. there wasnt one morning when we didnt listen to this CD, and as soon as I returned from camp, it was the first thing I bought! You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Practice for French students.......2003-03-19

I picked up this album on a trip to Paris after hearing samples of the album on FNAC.com. It's been over a year since I took French IV and this album is one of the reasons why I have retained much of my French. DePalmas' style is adult contemporary with an occasional dash of country. He is quite popular in France (Marcher dans le sable was one of FNAC's "meilleurs ventes" for over a year) and won a French "grammy" for "J'en reve encore." "Si Tu Veux" is the easiest song to understand because of it's parallel structure, but I like most of the songs on this album (even if I don't understand every word) because they are so aesthetically pleasing! If you like soft rock (and Uncle Kracker type stuff) and are taking French, get your hands on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Before Piazzolla, Argentinean tango, whether performed in a Buenos Aires waterfront dive or cafe society boïte, was primarily music for a dance famously described as a "vertical expression of a horizontal desire." But filtered through Piazzolla's cosmopolitan outlook and intellect, it became a sophisticated yet still searingly sexy fusion of Argentina's rural milonga and African derived candombe styles with American jazz, European pop and 20th-century classical influences. Today, it's hard to believe that nuevo tango initially raised howls of indignation as Piazzolla's spell-binding bandoneon (accordion) and compositions ultimately won over the traditionalists. This compilation includes many of the late Maestro's best-known tunes, such as Libertango and two versions of Adios Nonino, an elegy for his father. From the percussive, Shostakovich-like thrust of Tres Minutos Con La Realidad to the keening, fatalistic bitterness of Milonga Del Angel, it is a collection to treasure, ideal for beginners and enlightening for collectors. --Christina Roden

      Album Description

Astor Piazzolla is arguably the greatest tango musician of all time and, from the 1950s onwards, he continued to experiment to test the limits of the genre. A virtuoso on the bandoneón, a brilliant composer, arranger and bandleader, Piazzolla conjured a sound that fused the evolutionary tangos of Aníbal Troilo, jazz, ambient and classical avant-garde aberrations. The Rough Guide To Astor Piazzolla is a soundtrack to the teeming city of Buenos Aires - peopled by colourful characters and incredible stories - and reflects his remarkable lifetime achievement.
