The Supremes [Box set]

The Supremes [Box set]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This handsome box set is, surprisingly, the first complete history of the pop-soul act that posed Motown's--indeed, America's--most serious threat to the Beatles' domination of '60s record charts. The set's heart is the dozen Billboard No. 1 songs, plus many other hits, scored by the trio of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard (deposed in 1967 and replaced by Cindy Birdsong). Also included are two sides by a 1960 version of the group when it was a quartet called the Primettes, a raft of pre-superstardom singles, and album cuts ranging from Holland-Dozier-Holland stunners such as "Heaven Must Have Sent You" to wan versions of "People" and "Falling in Love with Love." In reminding us of such duds as the latter (not to mention early, unfocused 45s such as "Buttered Popcorn"), The Supremes points up the group's mixed artistic success. Still, Ross and her winning-but-often-thin voice benefited more from cannily written and arranged tunes than any other Hitsville U.S.A. denizen; classics such as "Love is Like an Inching in My Heart" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" showcase her combination of breathy sexuality and emotional vulnerability before it curdled into showbiz insincerity in later decades. Disc Four offers a definitive selection of hits and misses by the revolving-door lineup that carried on under the Supremes banner after Ross's 1970 departure until the inevitable closing of the franchise in the late '70s. --Rickey Wright

In the path of enormously popular collections of number one singles by Elvis and the Beatles comes this crammed (seconds shy of the 80-minute mark) disc from another pop-culture icon, Diana Ross & the Supremes. 14 Diana Ross/Supremes tracks appear in some of their most vivid sound ever, while the post-Ross Supremes get their due with "Stoned Love." Ross' Hollywood years make for the weakest music here ("Touch Me in the Morning," "Endless Love"), but disco smashes "Upside Down," "I'm Coming Out," and "The Boss" prove as smart, canny, and enduring as Supremes 45s like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Reflections." The contemporary, yet already dated, remix of "Hangin' On" at album's end suggests, in fact, that Ross might make one more dance-floor comeback if paired with the right behind-the-scenes team. 5 out of 5 stars Revisiting the 60's in Style!.......2007-07-12

This music defines my happy days living in Austin, TX while attending The University! The Supreme sounds ROCKED the halls of my Dorm and accompanied me on many of my hiking journeys up and down the Hike and Bike Trail. Diana's soft sexy voice played in the background many dark evenings while my boyfriend (now husband) and I "got busy" in the back seat of his Chevy Convertible up on Lookout Mountain! Good times!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs with a great sound.......2007-05-19

I really enjoyed the song quality on this CD. It has all of my favorite Supreme & Diana hits like - Come See About Me, Touch Me In The Morning & Im Coming Out.

I love Cd's that you can put on and just let play whether at home, in the car, or in the background when company is over.

If you like the Supremes and Diana this is one of the best variety of songs available.

I say give it a try & sing along ... I did.

5 out of 5 stars Diana Ross & the Supremes.......2007-05-15

If you want the best of Diana and The Supremes, this is the cd for you! It has all of the #1's from the group and Diana's solo career during the 70's. It is fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!!!.......2007-05-06

If you love the Diana Ross music, you have to buy this cd!!! this is the best effort to compilate all the Diana's career in only one disc, and the quality of the songs (all they are remastered in stereo) is incredible!! but the best is that all the No. 1 singles from the supremes and Diana's solo single No. 1 hits are in this colection and wooow!! 24 songs !!!!; from the first hits like WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO, BABY LOVE, STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE and CAN'T HURRY LOVE to memorable songs like ENDLESS LOVE (with Lionel Richie), DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU GOING TO and UPSIDE DOWN (pure disco), if you think, you can realize that you have songs from the early 60's to the late 80's IN ONLY ONE COMPILATION!!!; THEN I RECOMMEND THIS CD TO EVERYBODY!!

One advertising: some versions of this cd have the inclussion of Diana's song CHAIN REACTION (the latin-american versions like the Mexican and Argentina ones have this song), but the US version doesn't iclude this great song, unfortunately.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh Versions Of Old Favorites.......2007-04-14

I bought this disc recently to add to my Supremes collection because I already knew it would sound fantastic... and it does. The remastering of these classic tracks make them sound better and more vibrant than any previously released collection. But here's the real kicker: most of these tracks appear in versions that are different than have ever been heard before!!

Hardcore Supremes fans will listen to these tracks and immediately feel a shock of revelation that they are not the same old versions that have been on compilation after compilation. Most of these tracks are newly remixed for stronger bass, more stereo separation, and now have extended endings. "Stop In The Name Of Love" for example, goes on beyond it's original fade, so that you can hear the backing track fade out while the girls keep singing until they finish cold, with one final "Stop!". "You Keep Me Hangin' On " has a longer second chorus, as well as a previously unheard cold ending. And the new mix of "Reflections" is a real eye opener, with softer psychedelic sound effects synched up from the originally released version, and an ending that continues on WAY beyond the original fade out point, with an additional coda and cold ending ( not to mention an originally deleted backing vocal in the bridge of the song )! Not every track is that radically different, but most do go on slightly longer than before, and the remastering and remixing makes them sound better than ever.

Even if you own any of the previous Supremes compilations, this collection is a must, for the alternate versions of these songs, and the much improved sound quality.

3 out of 5 stars Great Idea That Misses The Mark And WAY OVERPRICED.......2007-07-31

This was a CD I had ordered without the least bit of hesitation, After hearing it I had wished I had had a chance to sample. This is a great idea,
remix one of the most popular bands of all time. However the project comes up short. Grant it that there are a few good tracks, the rest fall short of grabbing the dancefloor. You Can't Hurry Love And I'm Coming are decent dance tracks, the remix of Ain't No Mountain was to say the least DISSAPOINTING. Just a drawn out intro that never really goes anywhere. Oh Well I guess if you're a Supremes Fan you''ll buy this just for the pure novelty of the disc, my advice look for a used price that will save you $10 or $15.

5 out of 5 stars Diana and The Supremes Are Never Leaving !!! .......2007-07-28

I bought this cd because i not only love them, but wanted to hear the mixes which i always buy from other artists. I LOVED them all! I would have to say that if this would've been a US release, I could so see the music company promoting the Remixed album with Stop In The Name Of Love.
First there was Marilyn Monroe Mixes from Japan, Now Diana Ross and Supremes. What next, Elvis Presley !!!

Japan DJ Mixers Know how to make you Dance!!!!

5 out of 5 stars re invented.......2007-07-25

I love these mixes. I have previously bought remixes of Diana's both made in the States and in England but they merely put a revamped beat behind the groove. These Japanese remixes totally change the concept of Diana and the Supremes. The new version Of I'm still waiting is my favourite. Also deeper beats on Upside Down and the Boss have absolute excitement for me. I think we should give credit where it is due. These modern Japanese producers have made the songs sound so new and I can easily imagine them being dropped into a set at nightclubs and dance parties.

1 out of 5 stars NOT EVEN FOR TRUE FANS!.......2007-07-25

the remixes are gawd awful. was hoping for some sort of dance remixes which have heard in clubs. however, the songs on this cd sound as if someone was just tinkering with some electronic equipment and decided that could be called "remixes". this is NOT worth purchasing - trust me. and I am a B I G both diana ross and the supremes fan.

5 out of 5 stars Progressive Japanese Remixes Capture the Flavor of the Originals.......2007-07-25

This is a great package of remixes. The new versions are longer, deeper, and more challenging than the "safe" American remixes we get here. Some of these guys took the girls' voices way out there and came back winners. There's hard dance music, melodic "disco" type songs, and a couple of experimental sounding mixes that I hope will grow on me. The Fantastic Plastic Machine remix of Ain't No Mountain... is exciting and fun. Man, I'd love to be on a dancefloor with this song playing full blast. I'm Still Waiting is given a shuffling beat with sweet strings. All in all, you'll hear the Supremes voices sounding just as contemporary in these remixes as any of the current divas out there, and that's just wonderful. Touch Me In the Morning gets a down and dirty, fast tempo remix complete with an audience cheering. Diana's voice doesn't sound distorted at all as she asks if we know where we're going to as the music POUNDS behind her. I hope Diana Ross listens to this and gets a warm feeling knowing that a whole new generation will be discovering her voice. I'm old enough to have seen her performing with the Supremes on Ed Sullivan, and this collection respected us older listeners and gave me lots of listening pleasure. Very deep, joyful mixes with the melodies intact.

The title is a bit of a misnomer: The Supremes are anthologized in more comprehensive fashion on Motown's three-volume Greatest Hits series, while this package is denser, and has a higher hit-per-track ratio. But if you'd rather pick up one collection than three, and if you want a good, thorough skimming of cream from the group's catalog, this is the better choice. All of the familiar songs are here, with no major omissions--and they're packed in with a liberal helping of second-magnitude hits. For a collection that samples only the extreme top end of the Supremes' output, there's Every Great No. 1 Hit, also on Motown. It's missing a lot, but it delivers exactly what it promises. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's About the Music.......2007-06-27

Diana Ross and The Supremes were the leading girl group at Berry Gordy's Motown Records during the 1960's and 70's. Furthermore, they were a leading group among all girl groups of the 1960's; you've only got to count their hits to know that. But recently, with the Broadway stage and movie success of "Dreamgirls," and its non-Motown, non-original sound track, many of us may be more familiar with the backstory than the group's music.

This record collection can remedy that situation. Among its 20 tracks, I count 14 songs that were big, reasonably rocking hits, Motown style, before the studio started going for a softer style that better suited the emerging solo star Diana Ross's slender voice. Holland-Dozier-Holland surely knew how to write rocking songs; the studio had a celebrated, tight backing band, and The Supremes could deliver. Listen to "Come See About Me," one of their earliest hits, and hear those girls belt it out. Or try "Back In My Arms Again," "Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart,""Stop! In the Name of Love." Any one of their 14 original hits: these girls were not peddling bubblegum.

The backstory doesn't explain their great success: it's about the music...

5 out of 5 stars The best!!.......2007-01-05

Good quality and great selection!!! This is Diana Ross and the Supremes. What could be better?

5 out of 5 stars Damn, these girls could SING!.......2006-07-26

The Supremes (or Diana Ross & the Supremes, whatever you wanna call 'em) had two very important things today's R&B stars lack: the undeniable songwriting power of Holland/Dozier/Holland is one. For another, they had SOUL!!! If you're tired of the cut-and-dry, emotionless "soul" (read: rap) music from Mariah Carey & friends, give this one a spin! Good songs... where can I start? At the beginning, I suppose... When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes, Where Did Our Love Go?, Baby Love, Come See About Me, Back in My Arms Again (the latter five all #1's), I Hear a Symphony, You Can't Hurry Love (their best song in my mind), You Keep Me Hangin' On, Love Child, I'm Livin' In Shame, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (with the Temps, a winning combo in my mind!) and the beautiful Someday We'll Be Together. And there's only one bad track over the course of 25 (yes, I'm actually admitting there is a bad song here. I deserve whatever flames I may be given) is the seriously dated No Matter What Sign You Are. Buy it, buy it, BUY IT!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not entirely Supreme.......2006-01-20

OK, what you hear are all hits, but there are more hits than on this CD. And plenty of other CD-sets to pick from. But I don't want more than one CD you say. Well, then pick the #1 Supreme hits CD. With a better track-listing an far better sound quality than this one. So you have to pay a bit more; you'll be dissapointed if you buy this one and then listen to the #1 CD.

And are you really sure you don't want to hear the gems that are finally discovered on the Supremes Box set?

3 out of 5 stars Awesome songs, bad audio.......2005-03-20

No sense repeating the extensive reviews regarding how influential and entertaining this music is. It's truly astounding, and the music is brilliant.

However...

In remastering these recordings, the audio engineers have apparently done what I always call a "boost and compress," which reduces dynamic range, increases overall apparent loudness, and often increases distortion. Back in the 60's, the tendency was to mix songs with vocals much louder than the accompanying music, and with very little deep bass. Nowadays the tendency is right the opposite, with electronically generated deep bass notes, and vocals barely peeking over the music. To give the Supremes a more modern sound, they seem to have compressed these tracks to bring up the music, especially the bass. The result is distorted and unnatural vocals, and compressed dynamic range, especially on the older songs. It's really a shame.

If you can't tell the difference between mp3's and CDs, you won't care. If you're an audiophile, you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars SUPREME REMASTER, STEREO ORIGINALS.......2006-05-13

LIKE OTHER COMILATIONS OF THE SUPREMES THIS CONTAINS ALL THE GREATEST HITS, BUT NOW IT REALLY SOUNDS BETTER, CLEARER 6 LOUDER, IF YOU WERE WAITING FOR A WORTH REMASTERER OF THE SUPREMES NOW IS IS HERE.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best!.......2005-08-02

There aren't many girl groups past or present that can even begin to live up to the legacy of The Supremes. Through a period of 16 years (1961-1977) and many different line-ups, they managed a long string of massive hits all over the world, including 12 US number one singles, all of which are featured on this CD. "Gold" gives fans and new listeners a chance to hear the very best of the worlds best girl group.
The first CD features all the hits from 1963-1967, featuring the classic line-up of Diana Ross on lead, backed by Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. The massive hits such as "Baby Love", "Where Did Our Love Go?", "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Stop! In The Name Of Love" all sound brilliant here - digitally remastered and in great quality. However, there are also some hidden gems worth checking out, particularly "Ask Any Girl" (the B-side to "Baby Love") and "Everything Is Good About You", which could have easily been a single in it's own right.
Moving on to the second disc and it begins with some of the later Diana Ross-era tracks (after Florence Ballard had been replaced by Cindy Birdsong in the line-up). The songs here are more soulful than the earlier pop hits, such as "Reflections" and "Forever Came Today". Some songs such as "Love Child" and "I'm Livin' In Shame" are social commentaries of the time.
Finally, the second disc gives the listener the chance to hear some of the post-Diana hits.
In 1970, Diana left and was replaced on lead by Jean Terrell. Some of the songs from this period are some of the Supremes' all time best. Jean's soulful voice really livens up excellent songs, such as "Stoned Love", "Nathan Jones", "Floy Joy" and "Up The Ladder To The Roof" (all UK top 10 hits), as well as a brilliant cover of "Love Train".
The line-up changed again in 1973, when Jean left and was replaced on lead by Scherrie Payne (sister of Freda Payne who had a hit with "Band Of Gold" in 1970). Scherrie's powerful voice stands out on disco tracks, such as "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking" and "You're my Driving Wheel", which are amongst The Supremes last ever chart hits.
The Supremes "Gold" is essential for all music fans to have in their collection. It shows the brilliance of a group who have never been (and probably never will be) bettered. On top of the great music, the artwork is excellent as well, featuring pictures of all the different group line-ups, and the sound quality on this CD is excellent. I cannot recommend it enough - buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars The Supremes Go Gold.......2005-05-15

Whether you're a newcomer, or a longtime fan of The Supremes, this compilation is a must have. Disc one features Diana Ross and the Supremes' Greatest Hits volumes 1&2. Disc two features DRATS' Greatest Hits volume 3 and for the first time on cd ever, At Their Best, a sampling of The Supremes' hits from the 70's. The booklet features all of the albums' origianl cover art along with full page photos of Diana, Mary & Flo; Diana, Mary & Cindy; Jean, Mary & Cindy; and Mary, Scherrie & Susaye. I highly reccomend this compilation for anybody who loves The Supremes.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars But...........2005-04-30

Disc One is actually "Diana Ross & The Supremes Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2" from 1967 and Disc Two is 1970's "Greatest Hits, Volume 3" plus the Ross-less Supremes collection "At Their Best", the latter alone being previously unavailable on CD. It's nice to have all the hits with and without Diana Ross in one great-sounding package, but true afficianados will prefer "Antholgy", which better showcases the Supremes' range by including non-hits, several fine album tracks, and more.

The Supremes' catalog (as well as that of every other hit-making artist who ever recorded for Motown) has been packaged and repackaged so many times that yet another go-round of the same material would seem pretty uninviting if the music weren't so good. The songs collected here certainly constitute some of the Supremes' prime stuff. But like many of the entries in MCA's 20th Century Masters collection, it's a product of flawed logic. The set is made up entirely of No. 1 hits, except for "Reflections," which charted at No. 2. It's unclear why that song takes precedence over two of the group's other No. 1s, "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone" and "The Happening" (both of which end up on Volume 2). The album could have stuck to the Supremes' early period, before Diana Ross became front woman in name as well as in fact. In that scenario, earlier hits could have subbed for "Love Child" and "Someday We'll Be Together," and those songs saved for a subsequent volume. Maybe these are quibbling arguments, but the perpetual mishandling of Motown's peerless catalog continues to puzzle. --Daniel Durchholz

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for content, 2 for execution.......2004-05-25

For years now, Universal has been cranking out basic, mid-priced compilation CD's of artists in their huge catalog of labels. In many cases, these CD's have been welcomed as they have provided overview collections for some artists that have not been collected before or are an improvement, sonically and/or content-wise, over existing product. However, with the myriad of CD's available for supergroups such as the Supremes, there really is no need for this collection but here it is anyway. If by some chance a music fan does not already own a Supremes collection, this would be a decent sampling but unfortunately, the sound quality here leaves a lot to be desired. So while it's hard to dispute getting all number one tunes with one number two side, this CD falls on its face when it comes to how it performs. Much of the early Motown stuff is muddy-sounding and when mastered for lp the high end was pumped up to compensate for the warming effect of going to vinyl. However, use these masters for CD and without the smoothing out effect of vinyl, these sound terribly shrill and harsh. Two of the tracks here, "Baby Love" and "Come See About Me" are particularly difficult to listen to for this reason. Since stereo versions are available on other Supremes' CD's there is little reason to purchase this only to get sound that is inferior to that which can be obtained elsewhere. With their monumental charting success, a second Millennium collection volume was necessary to merely skim off the Supreme's biggest hits and that companion volume to this one is a bit better technically. Nonetheless, neither of these collections offer anything new and are actually a step down. Better Supremes collections are easily found elsewhere and are preferable to these Millennium pieces.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-01-16

My first Supremes collection purchase on CD. It lacks the warm, full richness I've associated with vinyl.
Deep bass and sharp handclaps but the midrange isn't there.
Is it a bad mixing job or have I just become used to what I hear on the radio?
Compare the snare drum on Phil Collins version of You Can't Hurry Love to the snare drum on this mix.
I know, this isn't about drums but it's difficult to express audio impressions with written words.
I feel the reproduction quality (remix?) of this collection is substandard.
I'm looking for an enjoyable Supremes collection and this isn't it.

1 out of 5 stars Why?.......2003-04-18

I am annoyed with the amount of collections put on Diana Ross and the Supremes. What about the "great underrated" artists like Thelma Houston, "one hit wonder" I think not! Diana Ross is a fine artist but she isn't this great "diva" that she wants everybody to think she is. think about it

5 out of 5 stars Great Song Choices.......2003-02-05

The 20th Century Masters collections are infamous for leaving off hits when it comes to many artists. However, this one is pretty well done and put together. Of course, the Supremes had a ton of hits so not everyone of their big songs are here *although a majority are.* Every song on here is instantly recognizable. Everyone knows "Stop In the Name of Love," "Baby Love," and "Where Did Our Love Go." My personal favorite is the great closing track "Someday We'll Be Together." My only complaint is the omission of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." That's probably my favorite song by them and it would've made a good addition. Oh, well.

The Supremes were definitely THE girl supergroup. They paved the way for others such as Destinys Child, Expose, and En Vogue. Very few artists have as many hits to back them up as them.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Music.......2002-05-31

This was the first Supremes CD I purchased in wanting to hear the "Motown Sound" that I hear on my neighboring oldies station. A substantial amount of the songs on this particular CD are composed by the legendary team of Holland, Dozier, Holland and our carefully crafted to perfection. Hits like `Baby Love', `I Hear a Symphony' and `Where did our Love Go' should forever remain on our radio dials and music shelves as representatives of what was once called soul music. If you would like to experience the disciplined sound that put the Motor City on the map and which put together the mold for all other girl groups to pursue. Buy this CD as a starting point. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars MYSTICAL DIANA .......2007-07-28

I call this the MYSTICAL Diana/Supremes LP. From the Bizarre intro of REFLECTIONS (HDH claimed that they were walking in the studio one day and heard an engineer making wierd sounds with his equipment. They quickly borrowed the idea for the intro to REFLECTIONS!) the songs echoe a deeper and pondering Miss Ross. BAH BAH BAH sounds like a Kabbalistic Dirge. The ODE TO BILLIE JOE prefaces Ross' later work as JaZZ diva. The stunning UP, UP AND AWAY has a sadness that is ironic. The Tour De Force is I CANT MAKE IT ALONE. This is Diana's most resplendant song in the 60's - equal in it's FORCE and IMPACT Dusty's ALL I SEE IS YOU and YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME. Ross's voice is Strong but Majestic and the melody is haunting. She sings 'the pleasures of my life, I placed them into your hands, now suddenly you've gone, and make a change in plans, that won't include me now...that world of pleasant dreams, is but a nightmare now...it's all over now that dream is over now'. The depth and beauty of the song are perhaps the reason why it was never released as a single - it was too beautiful (as Billie Holiday once wrong of her song Same Old Story). This is a Beautiful albumn. The lovely ALL I KNOW ABOUT YOU - an old Side B that was never released in the US on LP is a great addition. This is the Diana/Mary and Flo at their best - Diana's blossoming style and her close promixty to Biliie's sadness are coming to fruition. Brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Primes and Primetts Back toogether again.......2007-07-30

The tracks are very good. They sing not only other Motwon star hits but those of other record companies. Some ballards are a bit hokey..guess they had to fill the CD.But overall very good.

5 out of 5 stars DREAM COME TRUE.......2007-07-28

This release is a dream come true. PLACE IN THE SUN, WHY, AMEN and I'm GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE Me are the highlights but all the songs shine with the scent of hope and Magic. Diana is clearly the STAR and the cast of thousands are in AWE of her magic. I SECOND THAT EMOTION, HOUSE IS NOT A HOME, and most of the covers are better than the originals - Miss Ross is stunning. The weakest song, the WEIGHT is an effort at fitting Motown with the Rock of the era and comes out as dated - nevertheless Miss Ross does a great job with tEmpts

3 out of 5 stars a childhood dream come to life.......2007-04-28

i was happy that someone somewhere took it upon themselves to re-release these two albums on cd. outside of showing off diana ross though, they have no seemingly obvious raison d'etre. she's not in her finest form on most of the cuts. but she does sizzle on 'try it, baby' and does a beautiful, sophisticated take on 'a house is not a home'.

what these cuts, as well as others, show is how underused mary wilson and cindy birdsong would be until ross left the group. they also show how ungentlemanly dennis edwards and david ruffin could be. they just push ross out of the way when the time is right and they're ready to be cock of the walk. that's the fun of this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Two Superb Motown Groups Captured Together On Record.......2006-05-15

In 1959 Diana Ross And The Supremes and The Temptations each began singing together on street corners around the ghetto areas for blacks in Detroit. The Temptations called themselves The Primes and The Supremes were their "sister" group, The Primettes. They signed to the local Lu Pine Records in 1959 but the label folded and soon after each group signed to Motown records and each took seperate paths. However in 1968 the two super groups were reunited for a series of spectacular television specials and a host of both studio and live albums together.

Their first studio album, Diana Ross And The Supremes Join The Temptations (1968) was, perharps, their most significant outing together. The albums debut release was origanally intended to be the electric, Try It Baby. The startling mixture of Soul and Jazz encapsulated a late night blues club feel to it and featured a stunning performance from Diana Ross and Dennis Edwards. There was also an effective interlude from the deep, husky voiced Melvyrn Franklin at the opening of the track. However plans for a release as a single were soon after cancelled.

Their first single together was the exciting and totally magnificent, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me. Their is a wide range of diverse harmonies on this recording from the lush harmonies of Diana Ross to the sweet falsetto of Eddie Kendricks and effective backing support from the rest of the two groups. I'm Gonna Make You Love Me was easily their biggest success together where it quickly raced into the Top 3 Singles charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Their fun, upbeat version of Smokey Robinson And The Miracles, I Second That Emotion was another recognised success in the U.K where it was lifted as a single and peaked at No.18 on the singles charts. However in the U.S. the glorious ballad, I'll Try Something New was lifted as a single instead and jumped into the Top 50. Again the blend of harmonies were alternated between Diana Ross and Eddie Kendricks.

The rest of the album was crammed with potential chart hits. Their is an engaging re-working of Marvin Gayes and Tammi Terrells, Ain't No Mountain High Enough. It's interesting to hear Diana Ross sing this version against a completley different musical arrangement in contrast to the more famous version she took to the top of the U.S charts in 1970 as a solo artist. Diana's smooth, soulful vocals combine well with Dennis Edwards more aggressive and forceful delivery.

This Guy's In Love With You has been frequently covered by a wide range of artists but Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations make this version their own. The performances all-round are exuberant and deliciously delivered with a distinct air of sizzling sexual chemistry between Diana Ross and Melvyrn Franklin. They also do an exciting take on Funky Broadway where the combination of Dennis Edwards and Diana Ross is once again breathtaking and remarkably effective.

They each carry their version of the golden Stevie Wonder classic, A Place In The Sun with such style and finesse and make the song defintivley their own whilst encapsulating more of that familiar and distinct Motown sound is on their version of Sweet Inspiration which places no great threat to the origanal and lacks the dynamic force of the initial origanal but still is overly enduring whilst Diana Ross once again shows off her effortless flair for ballads on the sensational, Then.

The album is then led to it's final which is a startling and surprisingly effective re-working of Elvis Presley's The Impossible Dream. Beginning with a soft, sensual interlude from Diana Ross the rhythm builds to an exalting climax with both Diana and Dennid Edwards sounding utterly fantastic with their shimmering harmonies blending together beautifully.

Diana Ross And The Supremes Join The Temptations was a huge seller and was greeted with a warm and positive reception from critics. The album topped the U.K album charts whilst narrowly being beaten to the top spot in the U.S where it hit No.2. A cracking classic!

Together (1969) is a little different to the first set steering into a more raw and earthy soul sound in contrast to the more sensual first set. Together doesn't quite have the immediacy of the previous album but still carries some engaging recordings. Only trouble is it lacks origanal material which was the case with most studio albums by other Motown artists in the 1960's.

Together opens with a striking version of Marvin Gaye's Stubborn Kind Of Fellow where Diana neatly surfboards along the gloriously assembled musical arrangements whilst David Ruffin again shows off his truly dynamic and rocketing vocal power. More mellow in it's tone is another cover of a Marvin Gaye classic, I'll Be Doggone where the vocal performances all-round are more subtle and laid back.

One of the ultimate highlights of the album is the sensational, The Weight where Diana Ross in particular conveys such passion and showcases her undoubted versatility. The compelling mixture of raw, earthy and gritty soul intertwined with a Country vibe makes for a startling combination. The Weight was lifted as a single in the U.S where it merley dented the Top 50 though deserved a much higher chart position.

Their version of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrells, Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing surprisingly surpasses the quality of the origanal and had it not already been made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, would have made an ideal choice for a release as a single.

Apart from the hideously out-of-tune guirtar riffage at the opening of their version of Stevie Wonders, Uptight (Everythings Alright) the song does lead into a compelling and funky little affair but falling more on the bland side was their odd, disjointed version of Mary Well's My Guy and an updating of My Girl which is combined into an uneffective medley. To be fair, Diana Ross truly ignites My Guy but The Temptations My Girl on this album pales in comparison to the magnificent origanal.

Another highlight of the album is an exciting re-working of Sing A Simple Song where each groups harmonies blend fabulously well together and makes for a rocketing combination across the raw musical arrangements which contains vast undertones of red hot and compelling funk.

Returning more to that familiar Motown sound was on an enjoyable version of For Better Or Worse where the emphasis is solely on Diana Ross' voice which she carries off beautifully where as Mary Wilson takes spotlight on a bland reading of Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Mary Wilson recorded the track as a solo and then the rest of the groups harmonies were added across the multi layered musical arrangements. If anything it's quite surprising that Mary Wilson was actually granted a solo spot considering that Berry Gordy hammered across to the public that Diana Ross was the star of the group. Mary Wilson does have something of a somewhat soft, pleasant-sounding soprano but it's clear why Diana Ross became the lead singer of The Supremes as she easily had the most diverse and distinct vocal style that really was in a class of it's own.

The album is then led to it's grand final with a stirring, soulful ballad, Why (Must We Fall In Love) which contains rocketing vocals from each singer involved though is mainly alternated between Diana Ross and Eddie Kendricks. Dramatic in it's content and exalting and compelling musically, Why (Must We Fall In Love) had monster classic written all over it but was only released as a single in the U.K in early 1970 to fill in time before Diana Ross made her grand solo debut and therefore was only a lukewarm seller, stalling within the Top 40 charts. Still, it ends the album on a triumphant note and is the ultimate highlight of the Together set.

Together didn't match the commercial or critical success of Diana Ross And The Supremes Join The Temptations but is still worthwhile with some fantastic tracks included!

4 out of 5 stars Substantial Motown Soul from Two Acts in Their Prime.......2006-01-21

This is a great collection of two full albums cut by these two Motown supergroups at the height of their fame, along with several bonus tracks, b-sides etc. It's a keeper. Motown brought in the best they had to help produce these tracks, including Otis Redding and Nicholas Ashford (of Ashford and Simpson fame),and it shows. They also picked a great collection of songs, including older Motown classics and the great duet "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." I especially love Mary Wilson's great vocal on "This Guy's In Love With You," and the poignant version of "A Place in the Sun."

The second cd finds the Temps on the verge of their Norm Whitfield "psychedelic soul" excursion, and perhaps they were testing this out a bit with some funky tunes, including a wild version of The Band's "The Weight."

In all, a great re-release and a substantial addition to the canon of these two great bands. If you like this, you may want to pick up the video for their NBC special which immediately preceded this release, T.C.B. A lot of fun for Motown lovers.

Looking for the commercial versions of the songs you loved most from the tribal rock opera, HAIR? This CD is the one you are looking for! The only other one you will need is the Best of the 5th Dimension. (Why "Aquarius" got left off this AM Gold CD is beyond me....)

5 out of 5 stars 1969 - The Greatest Year In Popular Music?.......2006-06-20

If compilations were an accurate measure of the greatness of a particular year in popular this Time-Life disc would make an excellent argument that 1969 may have been the greatest year in American popular music in the 20th century. Complilations will always be lacking for one reason or another. For example, on this discs there are no British bands represented. Neither are the West Coast superstars (Doors, Hendrix, CSN, Airplane...the list goes on). But even with the omission of those giants this is a great compilation. It is strongly evocative of the late 60's, Good Morning Starshine and Hair (from the musical of the same name), the songwriting talent of Laura Nyro (Wedding Bell Blues), some solid Motown (Someday We'll Be Together & What Does It Take), Canadian pop (the Guess Who & Jessie Colin Young), Midwest Psychedelic (Crimison & Clover)and more. If you were really a kid listening to AM radio you will know and appreciate each of these songs. And that's why '69 was such a great year for music, even the left-overs qualify as classic rock-pop.

    5 out of 5 stars The 60's rock.......2006-06-08

I love 60's and 70's music the best of everything. I grew up with it because my folks are older than most parents.1969 is a great year of music with smile a little smile for me as my favroite song. I don't like the music the kids like to today it is awful. Rap no way. Heavy Metal yuck. It is time for the oldies to be the only thing on the radio agian.

3 out of 5 stars AS I WALK THIS LAND OF BROKEN DREAMS .......2007-07-29

Rushed through the chaotic 1969 - this album presents a variety of songs but no central theme. Miss Ross and the girls were on tour and the record represents pieces of studio recordings she recorded often without Mary or Ciny. The album was copied for the movie DREAMGIRLS - and they didn't even change the titles of the songs. Clearly Gordy was investigating the future style of Miss Ross - and the results are experimentation at it's best. There is schizophrenia here: Pieces of Ross Genius mixed with the hits of 69 to deliver a new ross. Composer, Everyday people, No Matter What Sign and Aquarius are all examples of this. The song Union Man is remincenst of the Love Child Songs. Clearly the big hits here are BROKEN HEARTED which was originally sung by the Supremes. This is a more touching version than the one later released by Jimmy. Diana's sadness is all over the words - it is a song of confusion and loss clearly reflective of her world at the time. LIVING IN SHAME is based on IMITATION OF LIFE Scenarios. The last four songs are clearly from a more innocent erra (ie. pre 1967) and apparently they seemed to have influenced Michael Jackson who covered 'With a Child's Heart' Later.
