Dungeon Family member Slimm Calhoun is first out of the box from Aquemini Records, Outkast's new label, with The Skinny. His hallmark is a lilting Georgian intonation and mile-a-minute flow that bears marked similarities with his mentors. The rapper's identity is smothered further by Earthtone's solid, gothic-funk production that displays but a few brief glimmers of brilliance. A full-throttled funk workout erupts out of nowhere on the chorus of "Well," then hides behind a plink-plonk keyboard motif and jangling rhythm. "Timelock" is a breezy head-bobber over which Slimm relates the day-to-day strife of a cashless life. Big Boi and Andre 3000 guest on three tracks, the former on the filthy "Why Ya Smilin" and the low-key "Dirt Work." The latter graces "It's OK" with vocoder-enhanced vocals, which sound like Lenny Kravitz minus guitar masturbation--emasculated but kind of catchy. Coherent but workmanlike, The Skinny is a quick fix of Southern-fried rap for those fiending for a follow-up to Outkast's Stankonia. Canada's Godspeed You Black Emperor raise the ante on their already ambitious orchestral rock by releasing a double CD of material as their second full-length album. The group combines the drums and guitar of typical rock-band instrumentation with horns and strings to create a music built around drones and slowly evolving melodic figures. It rises and falls from delicate introductory passages to unabashed grand climaxes. Their juxtaposition of drums with violins and lush romantic tonality brings to mind Rachel's, but their compositional scale and the pounding repetitive intensity of their dynamic peaks evoke Glenn Branca's The Ascension. Although the two discs are indexed at only two 21-minute tracks each, the package includes a handy road map to the movements into which each is subdivided. The opening piece starts with five minutes of a 15-beat circular melodic pattern that is gradually embellished as the volume swells to an ecstatic roar. The release drops down to a pastoral drone that rebuilds to support an acid-etched guitar solo, which in turn yields to a unified 4/4 kraut rock pound that eventually explodes, leaving behind field recordings of public announcements mingled with wandering late-night Swell Maps piano. The other pieces use a similar set of sonic building blocks to take the listener on comparable journeys. Fans of Godspeed's previous work will be very happy, and the curious might want to hop on board as well. --Bob Bannister

Long drifting soundscape.......2007-05-07

"Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" by Godspeed You Black Emperor is a long sequence of shifting soundscapes, mainly instrumental, but with some recorded speech and other effects. Rather like walking along a beach where the buildings and so forth on the shoreline change every few miles, (I mean it's structured that way, not that it has any seashore sounds). Its the sort of thing I might have playing in the background that requires little concentration. I didn't find it rythmically, melodically or harmonically interesting ... but I guess the point is the whole sonic sequence, which you might like.

I don't know how anyone can give this record a bad review. From the second I heard the first note, I could tell I was in for a ride...just how deep and magical a ride was unknown.

This album as stated before, is best listened to all at once...no interuptions, no lights...just you and the music. People have also talked about 'God' in the same breath as Godspeed's music. This is not far off. I am not a religious person and don't believe in the traditional God, yet this music has a mystical and spiritual feel to it that is completely divine in nature.

Let it be said that this is not for everybody. A lot of people will feel bored with some of it and feel it's too long. These people have obviously been brought up on verse chorus, cookie cutter music for far too long and can't appriciate the amazing progression that is necessary for the music.

I know it is one piece of music, but my favorite track is 'Sleep'. That piece just has a grip on me and wont let go. Please do yourself a favor and BUY this record. OFF.

Greatness, interrupted........2007-01-06

I held off for years before buying this intriguing piece of music, only to discover that I had made a big mistake ... not in waiting so long, but in buying it whatsoever.

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., once submitted this two word review of Joseph Heller's novel Something Happened: "Nothing does." After reading one flattering review after another of this disc and this band, I placed disc one in my player with great anticipation of the layer upon layer of swelling musical ideas that would build up to powerful summit after powerful summit. Alas, what I hear is Hearts-of-Space-ish chord washes and minimalist instrument progressions that -- just when the drums kick in and the guitar gets a little noisy and a slight bit of hummable melody introduces itself -- sadly, slithers back into ten more minutes of aimless droning.

So many other musicians do longform musical ideas so much better -- seek out live Praxis, or even At War With Self and the Gordian Knot discs. Godspeed You Black Emperor may be sexy on paper, but in the reality of my headphones it is a veritable plain Jane.

Masterpiece.......2006-11-04

Music like this is so rare. Music so mapped out, so layered, so etheral... This album is an experience. It isn't a collection of songs. It's a series of movements that form an orchestral piece. When listening to it you feel as if you're in another world; a barren landscape plagued by destruction and an impending apocolypse. Yet, despite this, there are still areas of light and hope.

When listening to this album, do it all at once. Don't start on track 2 of disc 1 or track 1 of disc 2... Play it all in succession. This is the best way to fully appreciate what you're listening to.

Also, this album may take a little while to sink in. But when it does, it will be one of the greatest things you've ever heard.

Some are calling Mythmaker Skinny Puppy's most ambitious--and accessible--album ever. That may be sheer hyperbole but it is safe to say that Mythmaker may be the strongest SP disc in some time. Many of the songs prove infectious--particularly the opening "Magnifishit," the atmospheric "Haze" and even the stomping "Pedafly." The group gets darker and more experimental with "Politikil," pauses for something different ("Ambiantz") and closes with the ultrafast "Ugli." For the most part, the record succeeds, but there are a few bum notes: "Lestiduz" serves a noodly bridge between two better, more focused tunes; "Jaher" is a mellow drifter that will probably polarize some listeners. I am addicted. Every time that I take this CD out of my CD player, it goes right back in. There is not a bad track on the album. If you liked Greater Wrong of the Right, you will definitely like this. If you are a Skinny Puppy fan of old, this may or may not suit you. The composition, lyrical content and even the track ordering leave nothing to be desired. Mind you, this is not Greater Wrong of the Right part 2. It is different. There is musical growth and that is always key.

THE CHILD DEVIANT!.......2007-06-18

Many long time Puppy fans are dissapointed with slightly different direction that this band has taken in recent years. All I can say, is that I love both the old and the new Skinny Puppy style. I like Ohgr's solo work as well. If you don't like this neo-pop, electro industrla style than I don't recommend this album...but if you like Ohgr, or the prior Skinny Puppy Album, than you'll love this album to. I certainly do.

I dont know what happened to good old skinny puppy. It sounds more like an angsty teenage album from a no-name band. I was so excited by the reunion of Key and Ogre. Greater Wrong of the Right was a great comeback showing how the band had evolved since their seperation. This CD leaves me scratching my head and wondering what the hell happened

Puppy People return.......2007-05-04

To not fully love this CD causes a bit of conflict in me, for there are tenets abided by here that I often hold dear to my ideas about good music. One tenant is that a band of history (1980's industrial history, to be exact), when coming out with new stuff, should indeed sound new and not just a rehashing of what worked for them in the past. To this, Skinny Puppy holds true--there are of course elements of Skinny Puppy dissonance, that clash of sounds and noise that makes Puppy industrial some of the most wonderfully rough out there, but at the same time there is the paradox of their sound being a little more clean and refined. Another review of this disc that I had read made some connections between Skinny Puppy and Aphex Twin, and I think the connection is a fair one to make. The progress of sound is essential for a band to continue to grow, even after the loss of a mate, so on this disc Skinny Puppy delivers a new era of band sound while still maintaining an essence of what distinguished them in the first place. I wouldn't necessarily call this disc their most accessible (how can "Worlock" NOT be accessible?), but it is certainly a little cleaner and a little more towards electronica.

In the same sort of vein as the first tenant lay, the second tenant has to do with a band not sounding like they are beating a dead horse. Another review I read lamented a bit over the much more restricted use of snippets from obscure movies. This disc still offers a bit of this, but nothing like the clip-fest "Rivers" with HAL9000 and FVK and such. Again, Skinny Puppy advances their sound.

But what keeps me from just tooting a trumpet and announcing the triumphant and continued existence of Skinny Puppy? I'm close to that, but it does seem that there is just a little bit holding these Puppies back. It's hard not to think that it has something to do with a no-doubt cleaned up act, considering the history and effects of drugs this band has had to deal with, but I don't like to speculate to the point of feeling that I know the answer. In the day of Aphex Twin and what I like to call "techno of evil," which are really the results of superclean digital toying with an eye for the dark, it is kind of nice to see that Skinny Puppy can step into that arena and teach these young whipper-snappers what REALLY evil techno sounds like, but it seems as though it's at a bit of a sacrifice. Ogre doesn't come across as such a solid presence of the music in this, maybe because his voice gets a little too touched-up in the mixing process. In its earlier incarnation, Skinny Puppy showed how there could be weight and mud and blood in the realm of electronics, and this time around perhaps they've let the electronic revolution swallow them up a bit.

ohGr-centric, good but not great.......2007-04-21

Had to give this a few listens before I could fall into the groove of the album. It really seems more like another ohGr album then a Skinny Puppy one. The first half I am still kind of disappointed with, but the later half I really like. If you are a Skinny Puppy fan you probably already own this, and if you are just falling into Skinny Puppy I would suggest starting with some of their earlier releases, Bites/VIVISectVI/Too Dark Park.

I remember buying this the first day it came out, I was really curious to hear what the Damning Well and Puscifer would sound like, I was not displeased. I also really enjoyed the David Bowie track, overall this is an above average soundtrack, at least I though so.

One of the best soundtracks to a movie ever........2007-05-26

Usually I'm not big on soundtracks, but this is by far my favorite soundtrack ever. The whole album was produced by Danny Lohner, the second best person to be in Nine Inch Nails after Trent. The first song, Awakening by The Damning Well (Danny Lohner, Richard Patrick, Wes Borland) is my favorite song on there. It's just a classic hard rock song with very melodic vocals done brilliantly by Richard Patrick. The second song, REV 22:20 by Puscifer (Maynard James Keenan, Danny Lohner) is another one of my favorites on the album and it has the sentual type vibe to it with extra vocals by Milla. All of the songs are really good, and I'm not just saying that. The Page Hamilton song was also good. Hell, all of them are worth listening to. The album will be worth the amount of money you spend, I can tell you that. It has some great collaborations and thats what got me interested in it in the first place. That and the fact that I'm a huge Danny Lohner fan (and he did a great job with this, by the way). I highly recommend it!

Better than I thought..........2006-10-15

I bought this album because iTunes wouldn't let me download the Puscifer track unless I downloaded the entire album... the rest of the CD actually isn't all that bad.

It took me months to buy this because I bought Underworld Evolution for one track and the rest of the CD wasn't anything to climax about. Songs like "Rev 22:20", "Optimissed", "Bring Me The Head of the Disco King", "Awakening", and every Renholder track on this album make it worth buying. I'd mention the A Perfect Circle tracks, but I already had those so they weren't new. They're a nice addition, though.

I never watched the movie so I can't really say if the songs fit in with the theme and feel of the film.

This CD is definately better than its sister. If you're thinking about buying one or the other, go with this one first.

Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18

Simply put, this collection of remixes, and a few artfully selected covers, is the highest quality collection of its kind I've heard.

Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.

I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.

Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.

To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.

Collide must be one of the greatest bands ever to hit the gothic scene. The combination of Karin and Statik are explosive; indeed, Vortex is definitely their masterpiece of Remixes done right! As well as new songs that will demand your attention, highly note worthy!! Some of the best out there!


Listen to the samples on this site just so you can say "Yeah, I'm a smart consumer." If you like any combination of Collide, you're gonna end up buying Vortex, it is most certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.

Get lost in the Vortex.......2006-10-10

I really liked this album, while some of the songs are remixed more than once they're still able to keep a semblance of uniqueness. Then there are the little gems added to the mix "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" and "Feed Me to the Lions" are really fun songs that quickly moved their way into my top 10 lists.

These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.

What an awesome find!.......2006-08-20

You will all think I'm crazy, but I was looking for new music one day at work, came across Collide because it was "similar" to other music I like, and bought it without even hearing it! I wasn't somewhere that I could listen to the samples, so I trusted other user reviews, and couldn't be more pleased. This CD has become a staple in my collection, and frankly, hasn't left my CD changer yet! My boyfriend even added it to his iPod. My personal favorite is "The Lunatics...", don't ask me why. I always play it on my way to the gym...and sometimes before work...perhaps it's something Freudian. :)

I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.

Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).

remixed to perfection.......2006-07-06

before picking up this two-disc package, i was not familiar with the works of Collide. i bought this item on a whim, and am very glad i did. the variety of style approach is refreshing, you really don't hear the same song twice, though there are a few mixes of a few songs. these are good cds to put in on a trip or chill at the house, and i've had the album for a few weeks now and am not tired of it. enjoy the haunting effects of a great band rearranged by great artistic minds.

Some Kind of Strange was an excellent album. It has a goth/vampire mood music feel to it and that is exactly what I got it for. It is a good album and I plan to get others by this group.

Pretty good...but repetitive........2007-04-18

Let me start off by saying that Collide is a truly amazing band. Their release "Chasing the Ghost" was beyond anything I've ever heard before. I've had it for about a year now, and still I can listen to the whole album in one session without getting the slightest bit bored with it. I would definitely suggest "Chasing the Ghost" for those of you who are new to Collide.

Now for this album: It wasn't horrible. "Crushed" is very a catchy song with an atmosphere of subtle vengefulness to it. "Euphoria" is also another amazing song that has a nice sultry and down-tempo, shoe-gazing type of feel to it sided with an electronic edge. The song seems very mellow at first, but around the third repeat of the chorus it picks up a bit and really climaxes, leaving you completely hypnotized with the song's ending.
The rest of the album isn't bad either and has its high and low points like any other album. After the first two songs, the rest of its tracks pretty much maintain one constant tempo, which is undoubtedly part of Collide's magic, but can get a bit monotonous after awhile. I guess the listener's own preferences would play a part in whether or not they can tolerate some slight monotony. I must say though, the down tempo feel really creates a carthartic atmosphere.
There are some other good songs to this album too, such as "Tempted" and "Slither Thing" which takes on a different and almost unexpected feel...and a few other, also.

Overall this album was pretty good...not Collide's best....but certainly not horrible. I'd only suggest it to those who have already been exposed to Collide, however. Chasing the Ghost would have to be the suggested album for those just discovering this band.

Very Atmospheric (feels like being somewhere both beautiful and dark).......2007-04-13

Some Kind of Strange is a mesmerizing. Collide are very successful at creating atmospheric music that is slow and beautiful. Music of this kind can often get repetitive and cause the listener to lose interest. Collide avoids this pitfall. This album is captivating.

"Euphoria", "Somewhere", "Slither Thing", "Complicated"

Also, "Vortex" (A double disc Collide remix album) is definitely worth checking out. It is probably one of the most interesting remix albums I have ever heard.

Beyond good.......2007-04-13

I visited a friend of mine i hadn't seen since october, and she immediatly began raving about some CD's i had given her. I realized then that I myself had been listening to Collide since beginning of october and have not stopped since i got "chasing the ghost"

The music of collide is sensual and energetic and is just beyond anything that music today has to offer. The maturity of sound and lyrics is in scope with stuff from Nine Inch Nails.

Recently i began buying other albums by this phenomenal group and Some Kind of Strange has captivated me. Euphoria is one of the best songs on the album but its not the only thing it has to offer.

Describing the sound and energy isn't enough, it can only be experianced.

To those familiar with the band it's no surprise to find the haunting vibes within each and every song. This Cd absolutely has to be one of the most inspiring of all the Cd's I own. In fact, one of the songs on the Cd actually sparked an inspiration..an idea for a novel actually. It's not completed at this time, but I remember hearing the song and the story instantly coming to life..as if the lyrics had been written with the main character in mind. There is simply so much personality in Collide's music, and Some Kind of Strange is a mover---meaning, you simply can't just listen to the cd without feeling.. something.

This is a masterful work of noise sculpture; ominously appealing, it draws the listener into a musical world of colorful horror. Musician/programmers Cevin Key and Dwayne Goettel craft fascinating sound collages over which vocalist Nivek Ogre roars, snarls, and whispers his inimitable free-flowing narcotic imagery. Lyrical themes revolve around pollution and destruction of both the earth and the psyche. Key and Goettel display their characteristic talent for creating beautifully wicked and twisted soundscapes, seemingly drawing from any conceivable device capable of creating noise. The Album that Changed Me from a Skinny Puppy Listener to a Skinny Puppy Fan.......2007-07-28

I've already written a review for the SP album that made me take another look at Skinny Puppy (The Process) and Too Dark Park is the album that I listened to after The Process. This is the album that made me look for ALL of the other SP albums and realize that I had overlooked something when I just tried downloading certain songs.

Now, I came to this album after The Process because I already knew the song "Spasmolytic" and absolutely loved it. It was so bizarre, noisy, scary, and yet still made you want to move. I'm sure if Britney or the current pop-skanks heard this song, they would hurl. I was not disappointed with the rest of the album.

What I've realized is that Skinny Puppy takes some patience to enjoy. At first, most of their songs just sound like random noise. Just finding a few songs here and there is NOT a good way to find out if you'll like Skinny Puppy. It's best to hear their albums from start to finish (though, I'll admit the only tracks I generally skip over are the closer tracks... especially "Download" from Last Rights). The more you listen you realize how many layers of sounds there are in each and every track on the CD.

On this CD, it's mostly electronic, but you'll hear a guitar every once-in-awhile, just not the way you expect (just listen to TWFO).

"Convulsion" is the first track and it's so noisy and chaotic (generally like most songs on this album) that it took me a few listens to really "get it". Now, it's one of my favorite SP songs.

"Shore Lined Poison" is a song that is interesting due to the very unpredictable and confusing beat in the song. The first few times I listened to it I felt like the beat should be a certain way and wondered if my CD was skipping. After a while, I got used to it. I'm not a musician, so I'm not sure how to describe it other than it feels like they "skip a beat". It's just this kind of simple chaos that makes this CD so complex, interesting, and different.

Most of the songs on this album are full of electronic noise and distortion, but still manage to be danceable and it is MUSIC and not just random noise. Underneath the layers of noise there are songs that are made all the better by the layered chaos that surrounds them.

All of the songs are great, but "Nature's Revenge" and "Rash Reflection" are probably the 2 songs that are the most accessible on the CD as they're slightly less chaotic than the rest of the CD.

Finally, at the end is a typical SP closing track, "Reclamation". I say typical as SP love to close their albums with a very noisy track that pretty much sums up the whole CD with a few minutes of industrial noise that's barely musical. I still listen to reclamation with the CD as it does a good job of wrapping it up, but it's definitely not a track I'd skip to. Luckily, it's shorter than my least favorite SP closer, "Download".

All-in-all, this is an amazing album and is a MUST for any fan of industrial or dark electronic music. If you don't like it the first time, don't give up! You'll regret it... give it a few listens and soon you'll get it and will be a Skinny Puppy fan like myself.

Skinny Puppy are practically legends in the "Industrial" music genre along with Ministry. And when it comes down to a pure definition of "Industrial music," I always tend to think of Skinny Puppy as fitting that mold. Of course, Skinny Puppy has always had more of a sense for the "theatrical" than most other Industrial acts, which in return spawned the Marilyn Manson's of today. If you don't believe me, then check out Marilyn's stilts the next time you are at one of his shows. Musically, Skinny Puppy differs from any other Industrial band I have ever heard. And yeah, they use a lot of synths and drum machines, but it's the way that they use them that makes them unique and experimental. The soundscapes on this record are dark and metallic. The theme of this record revolves around drug addiction, and the songs on this record take you within the deepest, darkest depths of an addict's tortured psyche. Orge has a very demonic sounding voice, yet it is also very mechanical and there is even a hint of vulnerability underneath the surface. This is pretty brutal music. It is very different from the almost electro Goth sounding new wave music that Industrial is known for today. The lyrics seem like they were written during a drug induced haze, so they are really long, stream of consciousness type of rants. It adds to the schizophrenic effect of the music nicely.

Overall, this is a classic album. A must buy for anyone who is even remotely interested in the genre of "Industrial" music.

Non Music For Abnormal Freaks.......2006-05-30

I never thought noise could sound so good. This is'nt music in the normal sense of the word. This is more like a colossal collage of mangled sounds.Not very many people are fit for this type of experiance. If you are one of the people who like listeng to radio, or if you think that anybody on "American Idol" is a artist than you should forget you ever heard about Skinny Puppy. On the other hand if you have ever thought that the world would be better if you were aborted then this might be for you. The first Skinny Puppy cd I bought was the remission EP. That was several years ago. I dont know if I ever even listened to the whole thing before I got rid of it. I got into other industrial music like Front Line Assembaly, KMFDM, and Velvet Acid Christ. Finally I decided to give the Puppy another chance. I talked to some Puppy fan at a music store and he suggested that I start with something other than Too Dark Park. So I bought Mind instead. I really didnt think it was all that special for a while. Finally it sunk in and I thought that I should try Too Dark Park. I am so glad that I did. I have probably listened to it at least twice a day for the last 3 months. I have come to the conclusion that it is the best Industrial cd ever made. Before I heard it I thought that Caustic Grip was the best Industrial cd ever. It still is awsome, but Too Dark, Last Rights, and ViVisectVI have already passed it up in my opinion. According to other reviews people usually say that you sould start with the more accessible puppy cd's like The Process, and The Greater Wrong. I really think that is wrong. I think you should start with Too Dark Park or Last Righs first. Sure it is harder to listen to, but why not start with the best. The lighter stuff will just give you a wrong impression of what the puppy is about.
Convulssion 10 This is a twisting heap of grating noise. This one went way the hell over my head the first time that I heard it. I was smiling as I put the cd in my stereo, and by the time it was over I just stood there like a deer in the headlights. I had no idea what just happened. I didnt even know which way was up or down. Once you get the hang of it you will see just how awsome it really is. One thing I like doing is playing it really loud when I am at a stop light. Especially if you have a car full of w!gger$ next to you. As I drive away they just have this confused stupid look on there faces. Their is a good video for this song as well.
Tormentor 8 Signifacantly tamer than Convulssions. It is still very good. Definantly far from being the best one in my opinion. On most cd's this might be a 10. Its far from the typical dance song, yet there are plenty of awkward beats.
Spasmolytic 10 "Kicking the habit, Possesion in the flesh" This one is actually kind of catchy for a Skinny Puppy song. Dont let that worry you my wretched rivetheads. It still feels like a syringe in the eyball of conformity. I really like the effect of the echoey bell, and the noise of the train horn.
Rash Reflection 8.5 "Kiss the masters feet" Probably the easiest listening song here. Very repetitive, but thats not a bad thing because the song is good.
Nature's Revenge 10 Total frickin masterpiece! This song shows that Skinny Puppy can make beautiful music. Underneath the noises you have some strings and even some sampled opera. There is also some brief guitar pieces. It sounds like a cure melody, but simpler.
Shore Lined Poison 15 My favorite song on the cd. Its better than perfect. Think a noisier more agressive version of Nature's Revenge. Lots of cool noise. A lot of it I cant recognize. I do think that the fire alarm is awsome sounding. Sadly I also here the siren of a pig here, but its still good noise.
Grave Wisdom 10 Some of the best melody of the cd is here. Layer's of melody and noise, upon more layer's of melody and noise. Their is awsome beats here. Nothing wrong with this song.
T. F. W. O. 10 Another great one. There is some guitar riffs here. The chorus is just t!ts. Kind of upbeat for a Skinny Puppy song. I dont know what the title is a acronym of. If somebody knows please include it in your review.
Morpheus Laughing 10 My second favorite song on the cd. This is just one of the coolest industrial songs ever! There is this clattering tattering sound throughout the song. It is addictive. The melody that is here gives it a dark aptmosphere.
Reclamation 9 Istrumental. The lyrics are so distorted you cant understand them. Very dark music with swirling noise.
I definantly recommend this cd. It is my favorite Industrial cd ever! It is also in my top 5 cd's of anykind ever!

Some pretty sweet brap........2007-05-27

I've been a SP fan since the first time I heard "Worlock," which, admittedly, was late in the game for many SP fans. However, after "Rabies" I went out and bought "Back & Forth v. II" and started delving into SP's history. Some of you may not realize that one of SP's original goals was to create dance music that had meaning, that actually said something. SP called their style of music "brap," and although I have no idea what they meant by that, I notice that they didn't label themselves as Industrial, Metal, Punk, Goth, etc. They were creating a new genre: dance music with a hard edge. And that's what we have here - some amazing modern dance music with SP edge. Sure, the edge isn't quite as hard as it was prior to "The Process," but I must admit, I didn't find much to dance to after the first 3 SP albums - so for me, it's good to see them get back to their roots, so to speak. Long live brap!

Nice industrial/techno.......2007-03-26

I'm a huge fan of NIN, and when I learned that Skinny Puppy was one of the bands which inspired them, I had to try them out. This is a great cd, especially if you have nice head phones (I use sennheiser HD280's). Nice mix of highs and lows. Try it out!

I had never heard of Skinny Puppy. A friend of mine asked me to check it out. I am sure glad that I did. The Greater Wrong of the Right is the first Skinny Puppy CD and I just love it! There are no dull points on this CD. I highly recommend!

Linkin Puppy.......2006-12-27

Yeah, I bet that hurts to those who might be fans (as am I, sigh), those two words, but they adequately describe the sound of Greater Wrong. It has some nice points (the last song wins in my book for best use of a Hindi movie sample; every other application of such sound had always come off as annoying as hell, no offense to Bolloywood fans (that and industrial, hmm...)), but overall, it feels like a big flop. I'm not ragingly advocating SP to keep up their old school sound, but in wake of new technology available these days, you'd hope they'd expand upon it. No, we just get some, as one reviewer put it, politically laced nu-metal. Check out older Puppy, please.

Not for those stuck in 1990........2006-11-22

Yep, you read right. If you're expecting/hoping for Skinny Puppy to repeat the days of "Too Dark Park" and "Remission," avoid this album at all costs. People who like hearing something new or fresh: Totally buy this. It's a wonderful album from front to back. Even though they made an entire political album, it was nice to hear, and after hearing the song they did from Underworld, I could hear a band ready to return with some creativity.

If you want it to be as bizarre as the past, you're at a loss, too. But if you compare it to the stuff on the radio, you are simply over-reacting. Not even this is close to what the mainstream would/will embrace, but it's catchy and all of the songs were well-written. Some of the songs kind of remind me of the modern EBM. It is not a vain attempt to remain relevant, as it is completely natural with Skinny Puppy. "I'mmortal" is an amazing opener, and many of the others are also pretty good. They show that they don't have to be completely devoid of song structures to be interesting, and for those who laugh at this band, they might find themselves slowly suckering into the group after this.

I mean, if you're not just one of those "old day" fans, there is so much that this album has in it. I can't judge if it's the best album they've made, but it is as good as you can hope for.

What could have been.......2006-09-25

The fact that this literally unfinished album still gets 5 stars from me is a testament to the absolute genious of those involved. Due to the conflicts within the band and the untimely death of keyboardist Dwayne Goettel, this project was abandoned and released in this incomplete form. Despite this, it's one of the most detailed, diverse (yet unified), melodic and innovative albums I've ever heard.

After the heartstoppingly dark trainwreck/masterpiece that was "Last Rights", the 3 members of Skinny Puppy set out to create what appears to be a concept album about a church/religion called "The Process". The result is epic and totally removed from the rest of the catelogue. IDM influence bleeds into the quickened percussion, acoustic guitars and string sections enter the mix and Ogre sings cleanly for the first (notable) time. There was an absolutely massive vision behind this thing. One can only imagine what would have happened should things have worked out differently, but I for one am sure it would have stood as their absolute best work.

As it is, it's still consistent. Beginning with the melancholic "Jahya", 2 guitar chords reverberate through the listener's skull repeatedly over a piano melody, Ogre mumbles and it breaks down into a bizarre and violent drum track. The range and scope of the album become apparent.

Next we have "Death", a 'hard-edged' (as the preceding sample states) industrial metal tune with gorgeous melodic choruses and howling atmospherics in the background. Never sounds stale or derivative- truly separate from the rest of this subgenre.

"Candle" is a beautiful acoustic build up with amazingly poetic lyrics. Synths and various beats rise to a climax.

"Hardset Head" is an incredibly busy hardcore techno tune with some very pissed off vocals overlaying. The rhythms simply stop occasionally to reveal layers of melody beneath. The energy here is amazing.

"Cult"... a ballad using mostly orchestral patches. Very personal lyrics and a beautifully quiet and subdued outro. Not easily described. "I live alone...".

"Process" is impossible to categorize. Clicks, beeps and glitches form slowly into a beat with heavily processed (no pun intended) vocals, alternated with an upbeat shouted chorus of "We have progressed!". There's a lot of subtlety and detail here, and the ending is uplifting and a fitting last few moments with the introduction of sweeping synth sounds.

"Curcible" is an awkward, offbeat metal tune with an extremely ominous ending section building into a wall of inpenetrable rhythm tracks. A live staple.

"Blue Serge" reminds me of something that might be on Front 242's "05.22.09.12. Off", a heavily dance oriented song with heavy kick sounds. There's really a lot going on here, but the focus never moves from the beat. People who like 242 or care a lot about the production aspects of industrial will enjoy it. Really, the production on the whole album is incredible.

"Morter" is the most detailed and strange track on "The Process". It took a while to grow on me but now I rank it among SP's best work. Beats and melodies come in and out and form a strange sort of collage. This one has to be heard.

"Amnesia". Tragic and romantic at once, a perfect finale to the album and Dwayne's life. One of Skinny Puppy's best tracks ever. Also possibly the most melodic thing on the album.

"Cellar Heat", Merzbow-esque noise coupled with a backwards version of the opening track. Kind of unneeded but not bad, simply a 30 second outro.

The epic scope of these ideas may not be realized, but the songs are all fantastic. "The Process" is very hard to find and often goes for ridiculous prices ($80!?), but it is essential listening for any fan of industrial music or Skinny Puppy. Some of the ideas present here were in fact expanded upon in 2004's "Greater Wrong of the Right", but a good deal of them were abandoned entirely.

A great cd although the least "Skinny Puppy" classic sounding.......2006-01-11

This is probably the most commercial-sounding of any skinnypuppy disk, if you like Spasmolytic or Dig It, there really isn't anything quite so chaotic/noisy/distorted on The Process. But still, for the final sendoff for Dwayne G., this is a great way to honor his memory and genius. I love the acoustic Candle, the sad yet bitter Cult, the dark Amnesia, the dancible Blue Serge, plus all the other songs. The piano is almost haunting in Curcible which offsets the almost bludgeoning guitar/drum riffs, plus the unique way Ogre sings/says his unique lyrical style.

All in all, a great cd! I just wish they'd play more songs from this cd in concert.

Great Choice For New Comers.......2005-12-03

It's come to my attention from a Wikipedia article about the lawyer, Jack Thompson(He's a lawyer who is trying to fight against the videogame industry and wants to censor violent videogames), that an Amazon reviewer gave his book a 5 star rating during what JT called a bookstorming and that review was removed (They filled up the book with negative tags, photoshopped pictures, and 1 star reviews). The positive review was by a user called BushSupporter who appears to be against Skinny Puppy as well as videogames. Anyway, if you're here because you hate Jack Thompson and are curious about the band you may want get this CD. This is probably Skinny Puppy's most accessible album along with The Greater Wrong of the Right and Rabies.

One of the best..........2005-11-28

I find that most people whose favorite album is TDP also find this to be one of SP's best albums. TDP is my favorite, but this album and Rabies are two of my other favorites. I'd say this is definitely better than The Greater Wrong of the Right.

Skinny Puppy's Most Accessable Album - A Masterpiece in Noise.......2005-11-06

Well, I rarely write reviews, but this is one of those few CDs that have stuck in my mind so much, that I had to talk about it.

I'm a big fan of Industrial music. I like the popular stuff like Ministry, NIN, and KMFDM but also enjoy the not-so-popular groups like My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Pitchshifter, and Front Line Assembly. I also listen to some electronic music, but generally prefer the faster, harder tracks. I've listened to some Skinny Puppy, and generally when it comes to their songs I either really love them ("Testure", "Worlock", and "Anger" come to mind) or I just plain hate them. When I say I hate them, I mean that they just sound like noise with absolutely no structure or point ("Download" is a song like that). Either way, with my love for the genre, I continually check out Skinny Puppy tracks when I come across them.

...And when I finally came across the Process albume, I couldn't have been more pleased! I was hooked on this album from the first track "Jahya". It's a track that starts off quietly, and then bursts into several layers of music and noise, including a beautiful piano sequence. On top of all that is loud percussion and some very loud metal guitars that just make you want to head bang. The music warps and blurs and then fades to strange industrial/techno sound and then the track is over. It's just amazing. I had never heard a song like it, and I wanted more. Luckily, Process delivered.

"Death" is the next track, and I was equally blown away. The vocals are angry and the song just makes you want to throw someone through a plate glass window. Everytime "Doesn't mean a thing!" is shouted I just want to punch someone. I was really suprised by the amount of guitars on the albume... SP CD's are generally more electronica/noise driven, but this is one album metal-heads would enjoy as well.

"Candle" and "Cult" are two of the slower songs on the album, and generally I'm not a big fan of slow industrial songs. Well, I love both of these tracks. "Candle" is almost an acoustic song, but it has some layers of guitar in the background that keep it from sounding like it doesn't belong. It's really a beautiful song. "Cult" is more of an electronic song, but is the closest to a ballad that SP will ever get. Either way, both are very listenable and I would never skip either track.

"Hardset Head" and "Curcible" are closer to the style of "Death" in that they are fast, unforgiving, and very heavy songs.

"Process", "Morter", and "Amnesia" are all really hard to describe. They fit on the album, but aren't really heavy or soft. They're right in between, in an area that you rarely see in the industrial genre.

"Blue Serge" is the song that will make you move whether you want to or not. It's the closest track to a techno/dance track that you'll ever hear from SP, but it has a unique sound that no one else could copy. I love to hear this when I'm driving.

"Cellar Heat" is the closer, and is really the only track I could do without. It sounds like a conglomeration of the previous tracks layered over each other continuously and then metaphorically flushed down the toilet. It's an interesting closer to the album, and it seems to say "We did all this, and it's really for nothing." just like how some of us feel after we accomplish something in life and realize just how little it really means.

The album easily gets a 5 out of 5, and I would give it more if I could. I like every song, though "Jahya", "Death", "Candle", and "Blue Serge" stand out the most. If you like the industrial genre, and even if you're not a fan of too many Skinny Puppy tracks, pick this one up. You won't be disappointed.

This album came correct, skinny had never sounded this great this and will probably not again. If you like 3-6 or skinny pimp u should buy this. The rest of his albums dont match to this,the beats are bumpin too mainly cause it was produced by Paul & Juice. Check out songs like "Ya'll ain't no killaz" "I don't love em" and "All about them prophets".

The best solo release from Prophet Entertainment. Some of the best beats post Mystic Stylez by Paul & Juice. As the two have grown as producers, unfortunately Skinny has dwindled as a rapper resorting to recycled lyrics.

Skinny Pimp's Best Album, Period........2002-05-11

Back in the Prophet Entertainment days, Skinny was one of their best artists. Now they are beefin' but this came out back when Three 6 and Skinny was cool. It is a Memphis classic and a cd that every Three 6 Mafia and Skinny Pimp fan should have. It's one of the best rap albums ever made end of story. GET IT NOW!!!!!!

What can I say negative about this album? nothing at all dj paul and juicy J were the producers of this cd and you can tell cuz the cd is poppin. Skinny pimp with his gangsta lyrics expressing his every day life from pimping to pulling of heists and putting niggas six feet under. This cd included almost every body from three six mafia but one of my favorites were I don't love em feat gangsta boo. Just another nigga representing the m-town!

I've been listening to sp for many years, and this one's still my favorite. Fascist Jock Itch, with it's simpistic yet angry guitar and the great drumming gets the blood flowing, even if it's near impossible to understand what Ogre is saying. Tin Omen and Rodent are also great songs, although I prefer the Rodent version from Dystemper more. But the greatness of Worlock, wow... It is still one of my favorite songs of all time, even years after I first discovered it. The haunting lyrics, the main chorus, and the buildup to the end... Just brilliant! None of the Worlock remixes compares to the original

Anyway, if you're here because you hate Jack Thompson and are curious about the band this may be a good CD for you if you want to listen to a combination of metal and electronic music. Al Jourgensen's influence on this album provides a few songs with some great guitar work along with several electronic songs that have a great beat. What may turn you off is Ogre's vocal style which has changed in recent releases. He snarles like a psychotic beast with heavily distorted stream of consciousness vocals. The Greater Wrong of the Right and The Process are two other releases that may be more for you if the vocals don't sound good to you. At least give it a chance and see what you think.

This is my first Skinny Puppy Album..........2005-11-07

...and I have to say, it's unbelievably good.

There is not a single bad track on this album. I can't believe I've lived so long without hearing the brilliance of Skinny Puppy music. Although i have to say that this is not music for everyone. Only those who consider themselves fans of industrial music should buy this cd. If you don't consider yourself a fan of industrial music, then pay this album no mind, because if you do buy it, you'll write some ignorant bad review of it.

Standout Tracks to me were:
"Fascist Jock Itch" - This is easily the most energetic song on the album. You can feel the energy surging into you as you listen to it.
"Worlock" - This song is just f***ing good. There is no way around that fact. Pleasant, yet at the same time extremely emotional. It also has a very deep message in its cryptic lyrics. This song now stands among my favorite songs of all time.

I'm not a Skinny Puppy fanatic, but of the albums I've heard, "Rabies" is my favorite. Alot has been made of the production from Al Jourgenson, but the influence is subtle, and this is no Ministry. Most of this is excellent, but favorites are "Rodent", "Worlock", "Rivers", and of course "Tin Omen". Anybody new to the band would be best off with this album, "Too Dark Park", or obviously "The Singles Collection". This is simply an essential album from one of the essential industrial bands, and "Rabies" will have you foaming at the mouth.

The Puppy With Rabies CD, It's Not Mainstream!!!.......2005-05-26

Rabies is perhaps the Skinny Puppy cd that could've came close to the mainstream at the time it came out in 1989. However, this is Skinny Puppy we're talking about. There's just no room in the mainstream for the likes of this innovative, harsh-conscious band. With that said, Rabies isn't all that accessible to the majority of music listeners. Has Puppy ever been that accessible? Really? The main difference b/w this cd and previous cds is mainly that it's more guitar-driven. What that does is just add another nice touch to SP's evolution.

I mention this mainly because Rabies is always mentioned as Ministry-influenced. I don't think Ministry hold a big place for this cd. Most of the mood, texture, and style found in Rabies is definitive Puppy. Nightmarish, demonic voices. Insane, druglike music. Crazy horror-movie samples. Typical Puppy.

Make no mistake, Rabies is one of SP's toughest, most essential cds around. Once the listener tunes out Ministry's presence, Rabies is certain to feel like the hard-hitting, head-trippin' work that Skinny Puppy had probably intended it to be. It's an hour of ferocious greatness that will melt your brain and you'll be glad to repeat the effects. One more thing, check out the original version of Tin Omen on their B-Sides CD. It is actually better than the regular version.
