This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

JB will shake your money maker.......2006-12-26

This compilation oozes assertive confidence. It amazes me how much James Brown did with so little.

One of the things I like about this James Brown disc is that it isn't perfectly balanced -- the vocals are mixed way up. Some of the tracks sound like party jams. On "Super Bad", the trumpet gets a chance to improvise over a solid foundation of repetitive bass, guitar, and handclaps. I don't think there are even any drums on this track. Amazing.

When I would DJ at parties, James Brown was always a good choice for the music mix early in the evening -- lively, energy-raising, and too assertive to blend into the background later on, but great to kick things off with.

The disc has one jarring quality, and that's the way it veers from Brown's younger, more balladic studio efforts ("Try Me [I Need You]," "Prisoner of Love,") to the rougher, more aggressive quality of his later, funkier cuts. I might have put them in chronological sequence or even stretched out the material over two discrete discs. Still, it's hard to believe there's only a two-year gap between "Prisoner of Love" (1962) and "I Got You" (1964), the cut that precedes "Prisoner" on this disc. Stylistically, they're a world apart.

The subtle yet effective use of reverb on "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," along with that simple volley of sixteenth-notes (an amazing single-note guitar riff) sounds as fresh today as it did when this take was cut in 1965.

There is not a weak track on this CD, which is why it made such good party-kickoff music. For me, though, the album ends two cuts from the end, with the question posed at the end of "Sex Machine": "Can we hit it and quit?" JB poses as a repeated call-and-response with his players. How many vocalists would have the nerve to create such sustained drama out of a question with such a predetermined answer? It's pure foreplay, and yet another assertion of Brown's confidence. Then the brass section hammers in the nail with five orgasmic blasts: BOM-BOM-BOM-BOM-BOM! And it's quit.

This CD is from the very earliest days of digital technology. It features 18 of James Brown's greatest songs. Interestingly, a few of the songs here are not the hit versions, but instead are alternate versions. Either way, they are all great performances. Highly recommended.

awesome first JB CD!.......2003-11-17

back in the mid 80's CD's were the new medium and early adopters eagerly awaited the conversion of some of their favorite albums from vinyl to silver discs. what a pleasant surprise to find this CD only release of this great compilation of JB "soul classics". there are eighteen tracks that highlight some of the godfather's best work with a few rarities thrown in. greatest hits albums by a lot of artists seem to be recycled , repackaged and reissued. if you have a chance to grab one of these original issue CD's, go for it.

I own more than 3,000 CD's and LP's, and I consider CD of JB II to be among the top ten best albums of my entire collection. Consistently great throughout the entire song list, and very upbeat, good for party music, dancing or as workout music at the gym.

This was the second James Brown CD ever released. It features 14 of his all time classic hits. Most of the tracks are the full length, extended versions. This is a great CD that fans of Soul Brother Number One will love.
