5 out of 5 stars love songs easy to listen too.......2007-05-07

I love a classical voice singing this type of mustic, or sacred (from the operas (in English), or, out of print sacred. Wish I could find a source for some of my old tapes (some recorded from 78s) of artists like Jerome Hines (Holy City, 1962-3, 78 record I transferred to tape), Russel Davis (1970 or early 8os record I coped, of tape my Dad had copied), William Harness, Kathleen Battle, etc. etc. I enjoy a wide range of music, but had operatic training, so understand the requirements for superior vocal skill. John Denver had much of the quality. Music for me is part of the fabric of life.

4 out of 5 stars This is an oldie but a goodie!.......2006-11-09

One of his first albums of "popular" songs and one of the best of the songs we have loved for years with a fresh, new Domingo treatment. Just as his album with John Denver was a something new for him, these songs are out of the opera world. You'll never hear any of them performed by anyone up to the "gold standard" of Domingo. That being said, I love this album, but - the accent gets in the way on the English songs. You have to be able to accept the accented English and just listen to the gorgeous voice singing some very romantic songs. I highly recommend!

2 out of 5 stars Great for boring candlelight dinner or quick ride in an elevator........2006-10-31

As much as I enjoy listening to Placido Domingo's popular recordings this is not one of his best performances. Missing the full-blooded belting that can be heard on his other albums ("Be My Love" for example). The orchestration is very mediocre and uninspired.
For a romantic mood, "Perhaps Love" (simply fabulous) is much better choice.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2006-02-23

I have been looking for this title for a long time...in all the wrong places.

5 out of 5 stars A Valentine's Day Gift for all time.......2005-02-02

If you truly want to touch someone's heart, give this as a Valentine's gift. I received the CD last year and I love every minute. It makes a loving gift of one of the greats. With such a long career you would think that Placido would disappoint. So far it hasn't happened. This year my honey and I will see him in concert! Another Valentine's day wish come true.

2 out of 5 stars Lighter funk and pop ballads........2007-05-18

Coming on the heels of several superb albums, Sly & the Family Stone's "Small Talk" is a bit of a letdown. After a pair of albums buried in dense funk (to great effect), Stone decided to loosen things up a bit-- "Small Talk" thins out the rhythmic impulses and claustophobic density of "There's a Riot Goin' On" and "Fresh". Further, he clears out the dirty sound of those records for a cleaner feel-- less distortion, less groaning and deep funk vocals, and an odd insertion of strings here and there. The resulting record isn't horrible, but it isn't fantastic either.

"Small Talk" pretty much moves from one funk piece to another, pretty much all of them fairly nondistinguished-- whether it's the uptempo sort of stuff ("Better Thee Than Me") or one of the several ballads that seem to overwhelm the album (plodding "Wishful Thinkin'"), all of which are full of schmaltzy sort of strings. Admittedly, this sometimes works out ok, as on the brief "Mother Beautiful", saved by a powerful chorus vocal by Sly Stone, but by and large, while there's not a lot to hate around here (the endless overdubs of a crying baby on the title track make that one a notable exception for me), there's not a lot to love-- it's all pretty much ok.

This reissue remasters the record, appends a handful of bonus tracks and adds a new liner notes essay. The sonic upgrade is fantastic, one thing that's for sure is that the record sounds crisp and bright.

"Small Talk" isn't a horrible record, but there's so much great stuff by Sly & the Family Stone that it's really hard to consider this one in a positive light. It's just lacking.

4 out of 5 stars SHADRACH/MESHACK/ABEDNEGO!!!!!.......2007-04-14

'Small Talk' represents as 180 degree turn from the sound Sly & The Family Stone presented onFresh. The overall rhythm section is far sparer and relies on live drumming rather then a rhythm machine. Also Sly adds a light string section to many of the songs which even though they are in the backround make their presense known. On the title track Sly utilizes the sound of his baby Sly Jr as a pure rhythm element, something Stevie Wonder and Prince would utilize in a similar way in the future, but Sly's vocals on it are a almost nil.On "Say You Will" and "Mother Beautiful" Sly actually concentrates on warm (almost wholesome) musings on love and family, the former even utilizing a Moog synthesizer for the first time on a Sly record. Then we are on to "Time For Livin'"-now that is what this album is usually remembered for Sly throwing Rusty Allen's bass a little more to the front and again musing on his new family other then the Family Stone. On "Can't Strain My Brain","Holdin' On","Wishful Thinkin'" and "Better Thee Then Me" the Family Stone offer up a series of sparse, crawling grooves that are sponaneous to the point that studio chatter and cues are left running. On the other hand...there's "Loose Booty".One of THE very best Sly songs ever-it's main lyrical chant coming from the biblical story of three Jewish men involved with King Neberkenezzer-the story of basically marching to your own drum and that is what the song is all about anyway;the meanest, loopable groove and horn blasts possible;funk royalty in the highest!Hip hopper after hip hopper has used it as a BASE,never mind a sample and it almost wipes the floor off of everything else here. But luckilly doesn't completely do that because "Livin' While I'm Livin'" throws a hard rocking funk at you that almost goes back to Sly's first days of success."This Is Love" is the most obvious ballad on the album and is very beautiful. As for the the bonuses each has something distinct to offer. The first is a more vocally arranged take on "Crossword Puzzle" from the forthcoming High on You.On the other hand you also get versions of "Time For Livin'" and "Loose Booty" that are far rawer and less arranged, the former of which actually features a nice extended violin solo by Sid Page. There's also the unreleased instrumental "Positive",incredibly funky and jamming.Overall 'Small Talk' is nothing like Sly's previous two albums;it's incredibly funky but at the same time the lyrics are more about turning inward and the overall sound seems much softer. It does seem like the closing of a chaper for Sly Stone (and commercially this was) but in the musical age to come there were some who were curious just as to what Sly and his Family Stone were up to.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Doris Day - Perfect Casting!.......2007-05-09

For once they got it right. Doris Day being cast as Babe Williams was the smartest thing Warner Brothers ever did. Of course, the original idea was to have Frank Sinatra to take over the male lead in the movie version. Sinatra couldn't accept, but if he had, Janis Paige would have played Babe. With no Sinatra as a boxoffice draw, Jack Warner needed a star. Doris Day was promised sole star billing above the title if she accepted the picture. Janis was out and John Raitt (top-billed on Broadway) was in, but would be billed below the title in the movie version.

Usually, Hollywood gets it wrong. They denied Ethel Merman for "Gypsy" and hired Rosalind Russell, who could not sing; they bypassed Julie Andrews for "My Fair Lady" and hired movie star, Audrey Hepburn, who also couldn't sing and Carol Lawrence was told "you're out and Natalie Wood is in" when "West Side Story" came to the screen. Natalie couldn't sing either. Marnie Nixon's voice was used for both Wood and Hepburn and Lisa Kirk's voice subbed for Russell.

With Doris Day, they got everything: a top movie star, an expert singer , a trained dancer and skilled actress. Plus, she was beautiful and took full command of the role of Babe. I just wish they had kept "The Man Who Invented Love" in the picture. I've never seen a Day musical in which she didn't have a couple of ballads of her own. In this film, they attempted to right that wrong with "Invented Love" but dropped it so that Doris could reprise "Hey There" for historical purposes. They wanted Day on film singing that legendary song.

Overall, a wonderful transition from stage to screen.

5 out of 5 stars Pajama Game Movie Soundtrack.......2007-03-16

Love love love this CD. I am so glad the movie version of Pajama Game with Doris Day came out. I have been a fan of this movie since we did the musical when I was in high school in 1980. The movie soundtrack is so much better than the Broadway Recording. Janis Paige just doesn't sing as well as Doris Day. I highly recommend this CD if you are a fan of musicals and Doris Day.

5 out of 5 stars Energy To Burn.......2006-07-31

I know that the revival of "The Pajama Game" is a hit-of-the-moment on Broadway, but I still recommend that fans of the revival check out the soundtrack to the 1957 film version of the show. Warner Brothers treated the property in a more respectful manner than was the norm and even imported most of the New York to Hollywood to recreate their roles "in perpetuity." The new addition was box office magnet Doris Day who had already proven in "Calamity Jane" that she could bring rambunctuous charm to the musical. Hearing Day and John Raitt putting "There Once Was A Man" through its paces can still send a shiver down my aging spine.

4 out of 5 stars Doris Day leads cast in lively film verson of Broadway hit.......2004-02-08

Your choice between the original Broadway cast and the movie soundtrack depends largely on your preference for either Janis Paige on the former and Doris Day on the latter.

Day sings it better, however the Broadway cast album has better sound as well as an overture and three songs, "A New Town is a Blue Town", "Her Is" and "Think of the Time I save" were dropped from the movie.

The soundtrack album, however, includes extended dance music from "I'll Never Be Jealous again" and "Once-a-year-day" and despite the boxy Warner Bros soundtage sound, the music is given a lively performance.

5 out of 5 stars I'm only 16 and I love the movie and soundtrack.........2003-12-08

This is an exellent soundtrack baby. Doris Day has the purrfect vocie, full righ and clear. I'm only 16 and realize taht Doris posseses the finest vocie of any female on the planet. If you like the mvoe or Doris' singing you will LOVE this cd.

        Product Description

Jeremy Nicholas writes: “Phrases that chill the heart: ‘I want a volunteer from the audience.’ ‘Is this your car, sir?’ ‘Have we shown you our holiday snaps?’ Or how about “Tonight’s lecture is on the art of writing comedy.” Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, it’s not, really. It’s more like taking a pile of kid’s building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, that’s not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars).” In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didn’t come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LP’s of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently we’ve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!

5 out of 5 stars A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14

As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).
