The Very Best of Joe Tex

The Very Best of Joe Tex

Editorial Reviews

This greatest-hits collection chronicles a dozen years in the career of the late country-soul singer. Tex, who died in 1982 at the age of 47, stepped out of the spotlight near the peak of his popularity after joining the Nation of Islam. As country as any of his soul-singing peers, Tex was master of the playful, down-home raps, best exemplified by "Skinny Legs and All." Rhino's 16-track assortment shows him in a most flattering light. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars It holds up well..........2003-07-22

Yes, buy it. For the most part the songs, the guitar and horn work, and recording quality hold up and are still as catchy and humorous today as you remember them from when they were recorded. Your kids might even like some of the songs or at least listen with you once. Joe Tex was not one to fluff up his recording sessions with unnecessary violins and other elaborate orchestration; all the cuts have the immediacy of a night club performance. The album has quite a bit going for it besides just nostalgia value: the production quality of this CD seems to be a cut above many historical collections like this... kudos to Rhino on this one. Note: the lyrics are intended to be humorous, human, and down-to-earth (and they are), but some may be offended by the characterizations of women according to their physical appearance as in "Skinny Legs" and "Big Fat Woman."

5 out of 5 stars Gym floors were shakin' all over this land.......2001-02-08

Gym floors WERE shakin' whenever the local AM disc jockey was cool enough to play Joe Tex's latest sermon. Yes brethren, I said sermon. The man was a secular preacher, marriage counseler, and hmmm? what else? oh yeah... a whole bunch of fun too! Wallflowers of both sexes left the walls and danced to 'Show Me','Skinny Legs And All',and ' One Monkey Don't Stop No Show".Joe Tex preached the gospel of the wallflower. The man (kid with pimples) with the raggeddy clothes, the woman (girl with braces) with the skinny legs. He had a great big heart that encouraged everybody to take part and have fun. Everybody. This collection does a good service to both old fans of Joe and newcomers alike. I prefer the sixties stuff myself, but I can still remember driving in my first car in 1972 and hearing "I Gotcha" coming out of the AM speakers. Got me!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Soul.......2000-04-09

5 out of 5 stars Very Cool CD.......1999-08-11

I bought this CD because of "I Gotcha". I was delighted to find that the rest of the songs were just as good. What a great price for the CD!

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite R&B Albums!.......1999-06-12

A classic example of American R&B; one of my most-played albums. Tex had soul, humor, and a good voice. The album has a nice mix of fast and slow, dance and listen, warmth and hardness. Favorite song: Sweet Little Woman Like You.
