Gary Taylor prefers to conduct his musical affairs quietly, but he manages to make his presence felt in very important ways. Taylor scribes copious hits for other recroding artists such as The Whispers and Anita Baker while maintaining a successful but decidedly low-key career of his own.

A Mature Sam Cooke.......2007-07-26
An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17
Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.
You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!
One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12
The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.
ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!
should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19
The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.
He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!
You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.
A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.
This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.
What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.
Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

An Exhausted Fixer.......2007-05-22
this is a sonic experiment, similar to wilco's "yankee hotel foxtrot." it has its accessible songs, and it has its beautiful dissonance. "a prayer for kathy" is a slow builder, and it works towards something big.
i think it is a moving statment. so just listen.
Diminishing returns.......2007-05-22
Well, Wheat is back. Their new release, Everyday I Said A Prayer, isn't entirely a bad CD. The sound is more like that on their Sugar Free Records releases. Unfortunately, Scott Levesque appears to have lost whatever singing ability he may have once had. The singing on Everyday I Said A Prayer is just flat-out bad. It sounds like he recorded vocal demo tracks to teach everyone the songs, but never went back to re-record them as work on the CD progressed. The vocals we're left with are off-key, cringe-worthy, and embarrassing.
I hope Wheat disbands before they drop a truly horrible release on their fans. Everyday I Said A Prayer comes close to being that release. If you are interested in this CD, I would highly recommend that you listen to some of the tracks prior to making your purchase.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has made more than 20 seasonal recordings since its first one (for broadcast to U.S. servicemen in Europe and the Pacific on Christmas Day, 1945), but none finer than this one, led by the group's newly appointed music director, Craig Jessop. Featuring lush arrangements by Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, it emphasizes the gentler, more rapturous moods of the holiday, especially in such beautiful settings as Wilberg's of "Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance?" and "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" and Bradford's fantasy on "What Child Is This?" Balancing these are several selections in which the choir's blazing, full-voiced splendor shines forth, including Wilberg's festive arrangements of "Joy to the World" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," as well as Bradford's colorful take on "Pat-a-pan." The choir's singing is magnificent. Listen to the way the men lead off "The First Noel" and to how the full chorus builds the piece to a gorgeous climax, or to the virtuosic job the singers do in the "Carol of the Bells" (with its echoes of Rachmaninoff's The Bells). Impressively backed by the Orchestra at Temple Square, this is a disc to treasure, and a tribute to the admirable work being done in Salt Lake City by maestro Jessop--who now seems poised to inherit the mantle of Robert Shaw. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy or a worthier musician. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
A Mormon Tabernacle Christmas CD.......2007-01-19
Is this the best Christmas album ever recorded?.......2005-12-29
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is famous for producing very enjoyable choral recordings, usually with a religious theme, but frankly, on an international scale, they do not rate with the best (compare them with some of the better UK symphonic choirs, which is how the Tabernacle choir must be categorized, to see what I mean). But on this album, they have placed themselves well and truly in the international arena. Every aspect of their singing is, to me, perfect - diction, phrasing, musical expression, ensemble, and of greatest importance, a total involvement with and perfect expression of the words and the music. They don't sing about Santa Claus; they sing about the true meaning of Christmas, and mean it. And you really hear how well they sing in the few 'a capella' sections - musical moments that are unsurpassed.
Then there are the arrangements. These express everything from the implicit grandeur of God coming down to earth, through to the greatest tenderness of the simplicity of his birth as Jesus. All the orchestrations and choral arrangements are completely fresh and unhackneyed, ranging from the most exquisite harmonies through to extraordinarily bold key changes - the people who did these arrangements are amongst the best in the business.
Then there is the program. This ranges from fresh arrangements of old favourites (sample the fantasy on 'What Child is This?'), to an exploration of the most beautiful unfamiliar songs and carols you will ever hear.
Finally the engineering. Telarc are famous for the audiophile standards of their recordings, and this is one of their best. The SACD fully utilizes the multiple channels, without resorting to gimmickry. If ever there was a 'you-are-there' recording, this is it.
In summation: no matter how many Christmas CDs you own; buy this one too. The CD version works well (and remember, if you buy the SACD version - Telarc SACD-60552 - it will play on an ordinary CD player as well), but if you have the equipment to play the multi-channel SACD, you will get an even more rewarding experience.
All the above may sound over the top, but, as you may have gathered, this release has had a massive impact on me at every level. It is a prize in my collection. The greatest Christmas album ever? Quite possibly.
A Perfect Traditional Christmas Album.......2005-12-28
If only other orchestras, choirs, and arrangements could be performed as well. Some are, but how often do we purchase an album just to find it not what we like? Fortunately, one can listen to clips of each of the pieces, before purchasing.
"What Shall We Bring" is becoming now my fondest Christmas song. The performance by the Mormon Choir and orchestra is incredible, to me. I've found other versions of the song, but this version is the finest, by far.
For those interested about my favorite piece: It is from a traditional Catalonian Carol, translated from Spanish, called, "The Son of Mary."
Stunningly beautiful.......2005-12-14

Nicknamed "Master Of The Quiet Storm" and not without good reason.......2006-10-23
WOW.......2006-05-07
15 or so years ago, I don't know what it was but this guy always had my vote.
He is so smooth over the records. His voice is like no other.
So, I grew up forgetting about this guy and later heard his name again on the radio and almost died. So i quickly put that name in my cell phone and went here and prayed that this was the same guy that I listened to on the radio growing up.
So, I decided that make this cd my first purchase hoping that this will have one of the songs that I used t love.
And it did.
This cd is a must have. Most of the songs on here I never heard of until I brought it. "You Can Hold Me Accountable" I think is the song that they always played on the radio but this cd has so much more.
I urge EVERYONE to get this one. Its great. Now I have to go out there and collect his other cds.
One of soul music's finest!.......2003-09-18
Still in the rotation.......2002-04-19
"Square One" grows on you..........2002-04-16
Overall, "Square One" holds up well for an album made in the early 1990s, though it's a little too synth-heavy (Taylor performs most of the keyboards that are the backbone of the music) and mid-tempo to be truly timeless. Despite this, it's worth the trip in the Way-Back Machine. If you're looking for classic "quiet storm" music for that laid-back afternoon or romanitc evening, by all means get back to "Square One."

Like DJ Spooky and Ben Neill, this New York collective considers its music to be more than just a series of sound waves. On their new album, the threesome (DJ Olive, Lloop, Once 11) expand the sonic scope of their illbient symphonies to reflect the elaborate "omnisensorial" events they regularly host around the city. By matching detailed compositions with various physical environments, the idea is that these gatherings will give the music a functional feel. Think of Square Root of Minus One as a portable gallery. As mind-boggling jungle rhythms and bass lines weave with off-planet sound effects, each track slowly develops its own distinct setting, ranging from the apocalyptic "Birimbau" to the minimalist "Ririka." But, in the end, it is up to the listener to provide these nebulous compositions with any prevailing character, which can be interpreted either as a stroke of genius or knuckle-headed oversight. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

From one who loved Glorious history of Robert Shaw Chorale n 1957.......2006-07-03
After several days of listening to the whole recording, I became thankful to Norman and Craig Jessop for their Joint Adventure in combining this first recording of Atlanta Choral Offerings to include the Older Vintage of Shaw masterworks, such as, Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms' "How Lovely are thy Dwellings!"
Even with only three Morman Tabernacle Gifts of "Take TIme To Be Holy, Abide With Me" and the traditional Hymn, "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" there seems to be reasonable balance to the new with the old and the more recent history of Choral growth alongside the vintage Robert Shaw Masterpieces... they include Faure`Requiem and Berlioz Requiem,++ Mendelssohn's Lift Thine Eyes and He watching over Israel!!
Most Sincerely from Retired Shaw Singer and avid admirer, Fred W Hood
