Editorial Reviews

Elizabeth Goodwin, JAZZIZ Magazine
Gary Taylor prefers to conduct his musical affairs quietly, but he manages to make his presence felt in very important ways. Taylor scribes copious hits for other recroding artists such as The Whispers and Anita Baker while maintaining a successful but decidedly low-key career of his own.

Product Description
"Square One" is one of Gary Taylor's most famous CD's to date. Spawning hits such as "Blind To It All" and "Hold Me Accountable," Taylor garnered a cult audience in Detroit, MI, Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, and other cities. The dance hit, "A.P.B." was popular in clubs in London, England.

5 out of 5 stars A Mature Sam Cooke.......2007-07-26

I can categorically say this album was the cream of Sam Cooke. The reason for saying this, is to counteract the previous comment made by A. Sturley. Sam did not change his voice for this concert. Sam was getting more mature. His voice was breaking. Which I preferred. Had he lived longer, he would'nt be too far of Bobby Womack or a more polished soul singer. Also him moving with the times, who knows how he would really sound like had he lived longer. A. Sturley, if you do not believe me,buy and listen to the album (Keep Moving On).Both albums will always make music listeners take notes. The One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club was Sam Cooke delivering at his very best!

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17

This album is a priceless gem that you will treasure forever! Sam Cooke metaphorically rolls up his sleeves and really works up a sweat in this amazing live concert at the Harlem Square Club, giving an earthy, gritty performance that is spellbinding. Sam's delivery crackles with raw energy! He belts out the songs with an emotional intensity and sense of urgency that whips his audience into euphoric frenzy.

Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.

You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12

Sam Cooke delivers an unbelievable performance in this one. When I first got it, it was difficult for me to appreciate this live album. But as time passed by, the more it grew on me. And now, it's truly one of my favorite albums. Any soul music fan has to have this one.

The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21

This is soul at its very best! No matter how many times I listen to this album, I NEVER get tired of it. Sam Cooke went on to inspire thousands of musicians and, after hearing this album, you'll know why. Since the new movie "Ali," starring Will Smith, has been released on DVD and VHS, a lot of people wonder about the beginning where the actor portraying Sam Cooke is performing. Well, this recording is exactly where they got the idea for the beginning of the film.
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!

5 out of 5 stars should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19

This is the live album to outdo all other live albums. I am a head banging, rock and roller, guitar nut and this is still the best live album ever!

The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.

He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!

You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.

A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.

This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.

What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.

Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful.......2007-07-28

This is the best thing they've recorded since they made "test tones" for The Lips.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment from a Previously Great Band.......2007-07-20

I have to admit, I was really looking forward to Wheat's return after their last album Per Second Per Second Per Second... Every Second. That CD was fresh, interesting, and implied either a next step into Indie greatness or maybe a fizzle into nothingness. Instead, they've gone for something ambitiously different and badly missed. None of the songs are compelling; many are unlistenable. The music is atonal and nihilistic, the melodies are either bland or bad. This will be last Wheat CD.

5 out of 5 stars What?.......2007-05-26

You really can't fake this stuff. If they did they did a really good job. Dimishing returns? Shut up. This is one of the most interesting albums I have heard so far this year. I read the poor reviews and I was like "what?"--A million hell YEAHS to this.

4 out of 5 stars An Exhausted Fixer.......2007-05-22

if you go into this record expecting the same record as "per second...every second," you'd be wrong. you have to go back to wheat's first two indie records, and then listen to the "per second" demos to understand what the band originally started out as.

this is a sonic experiment, similar to wilco's "yankee hotel foxtrot." it has its accessible songs, and it has its beautiful dissonance. "a prayer for kathy" is a slow builder, and it works towards something big.

i think it is a moving statment. so just listen.

2 out of 5 stars Diminishing returns.......2007-05-22

It seems to me that Wheat should have called it quits after parting with Sugar Free Records. Their two releases on that label, Medeiros and Hope And Adams, were beautiful, under-the-radar gems. Wheat then moved over to Aware Records and changed their sound up in an attempt to reach mainstream fans with the over-produced Per Second, Per Second. There were good songs on that CD, but they were buried under bells, whistles, and studio trickery. I honestly thought we'd heard the last of them with that release. I wish we had.

Well, Wheat is back. Their new release, Everyday I Said A Prayer, isn't entirely a bad CD. The sound is more like that on their Sugar Free Records releases. Unfortunately, Scott Levesque appears to have lost whatever singing ability he may have once had. The singing on Everyday I Said A Prayer is just flat-out bad. It sounds like he recorded vocal demo tracks to teach everyone the songs, but never went back to re-record them as work on the CD progressed. The vocals we're left with are off-key, cringe-worthy, and embarrassing.

I hope Wheat disbands before they drop a truly horrible release on their fans. Everyday I Said A Prayer comes close to being that release. If you are interested in this CD, I would highly recommend that you listen to some of the tracks prior to making your purchase.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has made more than 20 seasonal recordings since its first one (for broadcast to U.S. servicemen in Europe and the Pacific on Christmas Day, 1945), but none finer than this one, led by the group's newly appointed music director, Craig Jessop. Featuring lush arrangements by Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, it emphasizes the gentler, more rapturous moods of the holiday, especially in such beautiful settings as Wilberg's of "Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance?" and "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" and Bradford's fantasy on "What Child Is This?" Balancing these are several selections in which the choir's blazing, full-voiced splendor shines forth, including Wilberg's festive arrangements of "Joy to the World" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," as well as Bradford's colorful take on "Pat-a-pan." The choir's singing is magnificent. Listen to the way the men lead off "The First Noel" and to how the full chorus builds the piece to a gorgeous climax, or to the virtuosic job the singers do in the "Carol of the Bells" (with its echoes of Rachmaninoff's The Bells). Impressively backed by the Orchestra at Temple Square, this is a disc to treasure, and a tribute to the admirable work being done in Salt Lake City by maestro Jessop--who now seems poised to inherit the mantle of Robert Shaw. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy or a worthier musician. --Ted Libbey

4 out of 5 stars A Mormon Tabernacle Christmas CD.......2007-01-19

CD arrived in perfect condition; however, the front of the jewel case was cracked.

5 out of 5 stars Is this the best Christmas album ever recorded?.......2005-12-29

There have been so many Christmas albums over the years, when I saw this I thought 'Oh no, not another one?' Then I looked at the track titles and saw that this was something different. Among the traditional carols there were many unfamiliar titles (I say this as a foreigner - some may be better known in the USA than in Australia). I decided to buy the SACD version of this release. What a revelation! Where do I start?
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is famous for producing very enjoyable choral recordings, usually with a religious theme, but frankly, on an international scale, they do not rate with the best (compare them with some of the better UK symphonic choirs, which is how the Tabernacle choir must be categorized, to see what I mean). But on this album, they have placed themselves well and truly in the international arena. Every aspect of their singing is, to me, perfect - diction, phrasing, musical expression, ensemble, and of greatest importance, a total involvement with and perfect expression of the words and the music. They don't sing about Santa Claus; they sing about the true meaning of Christmas, and mean it. And you really hear how well they sing in the few 'a capella' sections - musical moments that are unsurpassed.
Then there are the arrangements. These express everything from the implicit grandeur of God coming down to earth, through to the greatest tenderness of the simplicity of his birth as Jesus. All the orchestrations and choral arrangements are completely fresh and unhackneyed, ranging from the most exquisite harmonies through to extraordinarily bold key changes - the people who did these arrangements are amongst the best in the business.
Then there is the program. This ranges from fresh arrangements of old favourites (sample the fantasy on 'What Child is This?'), to an exploration of the most beautiful unfamiliar songs and carols you will ever hear.
Finally the engineering. Telarc are famous for the audiophile standards of their recordings, and this is one of their best. The SACD fully utilizes the multiple channels, without resorting to gimmickry. If ever there was a 'you-are-there' recording, this is it.
In summation: no matter how many Christmas CDs you own; buy this one too. The CD version works well (and remember, if you buy the SACD version - Telarc SACD-60552 - it will play on an ordinary CD player as well), but if you have the equipment to play the multi-channel SACD, you will get an even more rewarding experience.
All the above may sound over the top, but, as you may have gathered, this release has had a massive impact on me at every level. It is a prize in my collection. The greatest Christmas album ever? Quite possibly.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Traditional Christmas Album.......2005-12-28

What Shall We Give to the Babe in the Manger. What an incredible piece, and how well- conducted it is. The music brings tears to my eyes, to be sure. The album is a classic example of how holiday choral music should be performed. This is done with spirit and tenderness.

If only other orchestras, choirs, and arrangements could be performed as well. Some are, but how often do we purchase an album just to find it not what we like? Fortunately, one can listen to clips of each of the pieces, before purchasing.

"What Shall We Bring" is becoming now my fondest Christmas song. The performance by the Mormon Choir and orchestra is incredible, to me. I've found other versions of the song, but this version is the finest, by far.

For those interested about my favorite piece: It is from a traditional Catalonian Carol, translated from Spanish, called, "The Son of Mary."

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful.......2005-12-14

I have heard and enjoyed many recordings from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir over the years. Then, it happened. I heard Joy to the World from this album on the radio and it sent chills up my spine. That never happened. A thrilling arrangement. The other music equally excellent as described. If you have never been big fan of Christmas music, get this album and surprise yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful...Intriguing...This is Christmas.......2004-12-09

The Mormon Tabernacle choir is already known for their beautiful voices of praise. When you add the orchestra of temple square and the spirit of christmas, you receive even more. This CD portrays the birth of Christ. It is beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Nicknamed "Master Of The Quiet Storm" and not without good reason.......2006-10-23

Absolutely beautiful through and through, this album by Gary Taylor (whom I only discovered recently) is the only one of his many albums that I've yet heard, and all I can say is I'll be looking forward to any opportunities to hear other albums of his.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-05-07

Please tell me that somebody feels me when I say that I was 11-14 at home listening to "The Quiet Storm" on WBLS radio station and I would just lay there and listen to this man and fall into daze when my butt should have been sleeping.
15 or so years ago, I don't know what it was but this guy always had my vote.
He is so smooth over the records. His voice is like no other.
So, I grew up forgetting about this guy and later heard his name again on the radio and almost died. So i quickly put that name in my cell phone and went here and prayed that this was the same guy that I listened to on the radio growing up.
So, I decided that make this cd my first purchase hoping that this will have one of the songs that I used t love.
And it did.
This cd is a must have. Most of the songs on here I never heard of until I brought it. "You Can Hold Me Accountable" I think is the song that they always played on the radio but this cd has so much more.
I urge EVERYONE to get this one. Its great. Now I have to go out there and collect his other cds.

5 out of 5 stars One of soul music's finest!.......2003-09-18

I can highly recommend this superb CD to anyone who appreciates good soul music. But be aware, it may change your musical taste forever. You won't find any whining or begging here, but just beautiful soulful melodies with Gary's gorgeous vocals on top of it. And I always considered the more electronic approach Gary took on "Square One", with the heavy usage of drum computers and synths, a real treat because he undeniably shows that you can create always entertaining and amazing soul music without a full blown-up orchestra! This CD hasn't left my player since it came out 10 years ago and it is destined to stay there for another decade or even longer. Buy this and support true soul music...

5 out of 5 stars Still in the rotation.......2002-04-19

I took a chance on seeing if this artist would be on Amazon as I hit play once again on this CD. This is by far one of the best jazzy R&B, top-down smoothest CDs I own. Put this one in your CD rotation when having company, and I GUARANTEE everyone will ask who is it?

4 out of 5 stars "Square One" grows on you..........2002-04-16

Gary Taylor is one of the most consistent and talented R&B artists of the past couple of decades. By no means is this his best CD, but "Square One" delivers with elegant production, lush instrumentation and passionate lyrics, without a lot of the unneccessary bells, whistles, and carnal angst of his contemporaries. Most every song is excellent, though "Pieces" and "Restless" could have been omitted; they're not as worthwhile.

Overall, "Square One" holds up well for an album made in the early 1990s, though it's a little too synth-heavy (Taylor performs most of the keyboards that are the backbone of the music) and mid-tempo to be truly timeless. Despite this, it's worth the trip in the Way-Back Machine. If you're looking for classic "quiet storm" music for that laid-back afternoon or romanitc evening, by all means get back to "Square One."

According to San Francisco's KGO Radio producer, Erik Nordby, Samantha Stollenwerck stands poised to "fill the female Ben Harper void that the music schene is definitely asking for". With a diverse style and sound she calls "Cali-Soul", Stollenwerck fuses elements of singer-songwriter, Americana, soul, rock, pop and even modern gospel. Samantha and her band, The Ritual, have either shared the stage with or collaborated with the Dead's Rob Barraco, Bernie Worrell of Parliament Funkadelic, Rob Wasserman, Om Trio, Vinyl and members of Galactic.

      5 out of 5 stars What a difference a day makes..........2006-10-06

My wife and I heard Samantha at a local dive in Santa Cruz. We were a little toasted from the party earlier, but we absolutely loved her on stage and her music. Because of this, we bought a CD. We woke up the next morning and got in our car for a drive and we looked at each other and said, "What the hell kind of crap is playing?" We both started laughing because we realized it was the CD from the night before. It was different from the performance the night before, which we dug.

A couple of days later, I popped the CD in while I was BBQing and damn it sounded good. Real Good! I had my wife come out and listen to it with me and she said, "Wait! that's not what we heard in the car!" It sounded great to her.

Soooo, now everytime I BBQ, I put in her CD. I'm wondering if the combination of hangover and music just didn't mix...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome new talent .......2006-09-23

Plays a incredble Taylor Guitar. Great vocals and range. Lyrics that are thought provoking. Cant wait for some more music from her. She is a must buy.

4 out of 5 stars Very Cool New Artist.......2006-03-08

I heard two of the tracks on this disc on a couple of stations on XM Radio and had to rush out and buy it even though I already bought K.T. Tunstall, Cat Power, and Robinella this week. It was worth it. The disc starts out very strong with "Missed the Sunset", "Don't Ya Know", and "Frank Sinatra". All very cool, funky tunes that sound like early Cherly Crow mixed with Sherri Jackson and Toby Lightman. O.K. it's cooler than that sounds. "Aesops fables and "Icicles" are also strong and the bluesy gospel of "The Party Life" near the end shows her more soulfull side. The disc is front loaded. The end is a lilttle bit of filler, preventing it from being a five star debut, but it's definately worth owning for the first three alone.

Like DJ Spooky and Ben Neill, this New York collective considers its music to be more than just a series of sound waves. On their new album, the threesome (DJ Olive, Lloop, Once 11) expand the sonic scope of their illbient symphonies to reflect the elaborate "omnisensorial" events they regularly host around the city. By matching detailed compositions with various physical environments, the idea is that these gatherings will give the music a functional feel. Think of Square Root of Minus One as a portable gallery. As mind-boggling jungle rhythms and bass lines weave with off-planet sound effects, each track slowly develops its own distinct setting, ranging from the apocalyptic "Birimbau" to the minimalist "Ririka." But, in the end, it is up to the listener to provide these nebulous compositions with any prevailing character, which can be interpreted either as a stroke of genius or knuckle-headed oversight. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Have not heard As is, but Decentertainment is much better........2001-11-29

I am rather baffled at the direction that WE took to make this album. In contrast with their earlier, slow as hell dub beats (which I think is still the illest shi* out there) they have gone rather mainstream on this one; utilizing a lot of cliched jungle rhythms; this puzzles me because the jungle tracks are not really all that, considering that WE are some of the illest cats out there and they are capable of putting out something so much better. Nevertheless, they still have their let loose some ambient/dub pieces that are real nice. I get the impression from other sources that As Is is their best work, and I have the vinyl version of Decentertainment. Decentertainment is much fresher and true to WE's style than this one - if you like ambient and dub, pick up their other releases first and save this one for last.

2 out of 5 stars Not all that.......1999-12-30

I bought this CD from amazon based on the reviews I read. I was very dissapionted. This disc has a few hard-hitting serious D&B tracks(Maybe 3). The rest are all REALLY slow, ambient I guess D&B. A few are just straight up electronic jazz. I guess none of the songs aren't really that bad, its just that this album will switch gears so qiuckly its annoying. Disjionted, non-mixed, weak, and non-danceable from the constant change ups and beatless jass. Keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars Hmm. Yes. Nice. But no classic........1999-11-12

First, I think it is nice that they alternate in atmospheric tracks among the heavily bassic ones. As a mainstream techno listener, d&b is a little too far out there for my liking. Give me layer upon layer with the bass rather than essentially, well, drum and bass alone, and I'd be happier. Sometimes it does sound a bit like Aphex Twin when the bass is toned down, but this is neither as accessible nor challenging as it needs to be to merit classic status and the multitude of plays that go with it. They could have thrown in some "filler" to go over the standard electronic album length of 70-min. also. Coulda but didn'ta.

5 out of 5 stars Outta Control Vibes.......1999-08-25

If you want to embark on a crazy, off da hook ride buy this CD. It's a listener beginning to end. This has just become one of my top 3 CD's. The production and mixing of the CD is flawless and it comes with some on point original material, it will wig you out!. Check it out and you wont be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars more main stream, but still nifty.......1999-06-15

WE seem to be playing with more mainstream styles and palettes. But they still have supperior skill and taste compared to the contemporary drum and bass wasteland.

sweet ambience, groovey reggae beat science and that sort of stuff. it also sounds like they have nicer gear to work with. the production is much fatter and bass heavier.

they are no longer miles ahead of the competition, but they are still ahead of the pack.

5 out of 5 stars From one who loved Glorious history of Robert Shaw Chorale n 1957.......2006-07-03

First hearing this amazing impression of the current Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus under Norman MacKenzie, gave me such a sparkling crispness of "Ubi Caritas" from his first Touring performance of Durufle`...I was considering the possibility of another balanced CD recording with 6 pieces of the newer version of Atlanta Symphonty Chorus with older versions and the newest Choral offerings of The Morman Tabernacle Choir.

After several days of listening to the whole recording, I became thankful to Norman and Craig Jessop for their Joint Adventure in combining this first recording of Atlanta Choral Offerings to include the Older Vintage of Shaw masterworks, such as, Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms' "How Lovely are thy Dwellings!"

Even with only three Morman Tabernacle Gifts of "Take TIme To Be Holy, Abide With Me" and the traditional Hymn, "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" there seems to be reasonable balance to the new with the old and the more recent history of Choral growth alongside the vintage Robert Shaw Masterpieces... they include Faure`Requiem and Berlioz Requiem,++ Mendelssohn's Lift Thine Eyes and He watching over Israel!!

Most Sincerely from Retired Shaw Singer and avid admirer, Fred W Hood
