Hip Hop is a genre not known for it's live performers but Dakah brings a whole new dimension to the Hip Hop game. A Los Angeles phenomenon, Dakah is the world's largest hip-hop orchestra featuring 58 musicians, almost every instrument imaginable and many of hip-hop's great musicians including members of the Breakestra, Black Eyed Peas, Macy Gray, Nikka Costa, and others. Drawing upon influences from jazz, funk, European classical, hip-hop, rock and Latin music, Dakah has won critical raves and a loyal following since it's inception in 1999. Having migrated towards disgust with todays sorry excuse for mainstream hip hop it is refreshing to hear a creative take on Hip Hop. From the opening notes of the horn section to the driving beats of a live drummer the first set takes you on a 50 minute journey through some original hip hop. The whole orchestra propels the MC's to another level. Disc 2 could stay in my CD player all month. Starting out with an amazing rendition of California Soul to the farwell thank you jam at the end of Come In Out Of The Rain this is one album that will not disappoint. For those of you skeptical of live hip hop, look no further, daKAH has it going on.

BELIEVE THE HYPE.......2004-11-17

I saw the feature in URB magazine and decided to go to the show in SF. This by far is the sickest hip-hop show I have ever been to. After hearing them for the 1st time I went out and bought Live at Grand Performances which was great. I just got SF Debut and listening to it I felt as if I was as at the show. This does not sound like the typical live show, the recording is perfect!! This CD is a must buy for those trying to find something fresh.

This is a great album from start to finish. Top notch production and a solid debut from a singer with a lot of talent. Each song takes you exactly where you expect it to, and the whole album bears repeated listening to really appreciated the complexity of the arrangements and the layers of instruments. A phenomenal debut CD from up-and-comer Joel Streeter. Joel is a talented songwriter and musician -- I have nothing but words of praise for him and for this CD. Additionally, if you happen to be blessed enough to reside in reasonable proximity to any of his shows, GO SEE THEM. You'll regret it when he's big and famous, selling out venues, and all you'll be able to see from Row 583, Seat X is an ant-sized moving dot.

Featuring some of Northern California's finest musicians, including Steve Bowman (Counting Crows, Third Eye Blind), Matt Blackett (Guitar Player Magazine), and members of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Red Jacket is a sound unlike any band currently on the radio. It's an amazing array of texture, from mandolin, to accordion, to layered electric guitar, with a lyrical depth uncommon in today's popular music. Highlight tracks include the catchy Going Back to Bed, This Life, and the beautiful blend of piano and lyric, Ciarda. "I'm a big fan of story songs," says Michaels, citing Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows and Bruce Springsteen as two of his mentors. It's about time a piano rock band came back around to leave off where Ben Folds Five left off. I saw Even Elroy play at San Francisco's Last Day Saloon and the rocked the place til the late hours. When I got home, I had to check out this disc. Though this CD isn't much like a Ben Folds release, the songs on it scream of Billy Joel licks and even a few Elton John melodies. It's great to hear another piano/guitar blended band live again. The CD is a great addition to your collection and seeing the band is a MUST!
