With Kiss the Sky, Will Smith's former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air costar Tatyana Ali ditches acting to enroll in Little Miss R&B 101, a class already crowded with one-name star pupils like Brandy, Monica, Monifah, Aaliyah, and Nicole. With such competition, it's tough to say whether Ali can pull off an A, but the first single, "Daydreamin'," driven by a sample of Steely Dan's "Black Cow," is a good start. The rest of the album however, is sugar-puff light--full of lukewarm ballads, candy-sweet lyrics, and Boyz II Men-like melodies (wherever Boy II Man Shawn Stockman has stamped his writing credits) that don't quite work with Ali's angelic but powerless voice. Don't write her off yet, though--she shows promise and in a few more years may deliver. --Rebecca Wallwork

USA Today
[On the second half of the album,] you'll find the gritty soul of He Loves Me, the lilting title cut and the emotional Yesterday, a duet with Chico DeBarge.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Kiss The Sky.....7 Years Later.......2005-07-18

Seven years have passed since the release of Kiss the Sky and I am very impressed still. Comparing this to artists of today like Ashanti, Tatyana really impresses me with her debut attempt. Sure the subject matter may be simple, but it's the delivery that pushes the album to me. I particularly love the songs "Boy You Knock Me Out" (anyone who samples Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" and has Kelly Price on backup vocals and Will's rap is AMAZING in my book), "Daydreamin'," "Everytime" (I LOOOOOVE the Cutfather & Joe Edit though as well), "Kiss the Sky" (beautiful ballad) and "Through Life Alone" (very smooth delivery....like a soft rain). I didn't get this album when it first dropped, but I recall FALLING IN LOVE with "BYKMO" and holding on to that love seven years later. Today, I am still in love with "BYKMO" and I'm falling in love with and appreciating "Kiss the Sky" all over again....especially in the midst of today's crap artists like Jessica Simpson, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce's Chillun, and Ashanti who believe ho'ing it out is the way to selling a song to an audience. This is an album for all of those who like it simple and not overdone. A simple and directly innocent love ballad is just enough for romance, not some Cater 2 U crap. Tatyana nails it for me. Kudos to you Tati.

    5 out of 5 stars Tatyana Ali's Debut Album.......2005-05-13

I remember this album when I was in the 6th grade. I fell in love with it instantly. I kept playing this constantly. Tatyana really has a nice voice. I loved that single Daydreamin' which went gold. This album is a languid journey to the heart and soul of modern R&B,a mellow fusion of up-to-the-minute beats and grooves accompained by heartfelt ballads. Each song tells emotional tales of young love, and speaks of the steep highs and deep lows of the journey as felt through that intense perspective, where a brokem heart can quite feel like the end of the world. This album should have been promoted more. Remember, this was 1998.

5 out of 5 stars Nice For Her.......2005-04-09

For her debut album this is nice..I got this CD when it first came out despite the fact that I hated the single that was initially released..Boy You Knock Me Out...that song irked me..It came out right after Lord's over played single came out that it sampled..I still think this cd was hot though..All together..I love the ballads...I would buy it again if that made sense..I hope she is given a chance to come out with another cd, or that she even wants that.

5 out of 5 stars My Favourtite Album.......2005-02-19

Even years after it was released this is still one of my favourite albums. It never grows old. Its a fantastic album for any R'n'B fan. It is worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Kiss the sky.......2005-01-15

Although I brought the cd, back in the day. I still think that the cd is very good. I mean it has fast some and some you can slow jam to. It's rare you find an cd that is worth buying, much less write a review about several YEARS after the release. I hope that she comes out with an new cd, i'll be some thing that I watch out for. My 2 favorite song on the cd where: Boy you knock me out, and Kiss the Sky.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, Timeless Hendrix.......2006-03-15

This was my introduction to all the great Hendrix stuff outside of 'Purple Haze' and 'Foxy Lady'. The man had a gift for songwriting and creating a vibe in the studio or on stage and this disc documents it all the way. The live I Don't Live Today (shades of Jimi's Native American heritage?) and Killing Floor are worth the price of the CD itself, and the awesome build up in the guitar solo (multi-layered) in Stepping Stone is unparalleled elsewhere in Jimi's studio work. I used to own this on cassette tape and am totally happy to see it on CD. All the tracks are noteworthy, not dull moment or filler song on the entire album. After buying Jimi's three studio releases and one live album during his lifetime (up to 1970), this is the next one to get.
      Long live.....

      5 out of 5 stars **** Jimi , your talent is missed !!! ****.......2005-10-07

Now THIS album is really producer Alan Douglas' best effort.....I just like the whole ' vibe ' of this compilation , and the songs really flow well together....the inclusion of the Monterey Pop Festival live track ' Killing Floor ' , and ' I don't Live Today ' from the San Diego , May 24, 1969 show , REALLY add a nice touch to the track selection.......and as far as a 'greatest hits ' compilation , this is THEE one to go with .... it truly represents some of his BEST work and shows the diversity of his talent.....everything from his Blues roots to his Instrumental masterpiece 'Third Stone from the Sun' to his INCREDIBLE sonic landscapes on ' Voodoo Child ' [ slight return ] and ' Are you Experienced ' plus the song by Dylan that Jimi made his own ' All along the Watchtower ' are all here...........BUY THIS ALBUM NOW , you won't be disappointed !

4 out of 5 stars now listen to ME, i know what im talking about!.......2004-10-31

First of all Id like to say i could never give a hendrix album below 4 stars simply because it is hendrix, no matter how basic or crappy a compilation it is. Hey, this stuff isnt bad, however its silly what that other review said about it being obscure, this is basically smash hits number two. Its not a bad buy for a new hendrix fan, but you can do better, because compilations could never do hendrix justice. Hendrix's later music andconcerts are what showed the world what he could have done, and that stuff will just blow you away.
Another thing is that other reviewer had his facts completly wrong and acted like he knew about jimi hendrix. Voodoo child slight return was not played at montery pop, it wasnt written for another three years and the same with stepping stone. Get experienced fool.

4 out of 5 stars Listen to me! I'm better than the other reviewer........2003-12-07

This is an interesting album. It's a assortment of studio and live tracks compiled to pretty much no one's benefit. Tracks, Are you Experienced? and I don't live Today come from a concert at San Diego, March 24, 1969. Also, tracks, Stepping Stone, Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and Killing Floor comes from the Monterey Pop festival, June 18, 1967 and the rest are studio recordings. I think that it's worth getting because of the material and the insight that it gives into some of Jimi's more obscure songs. Also, don't listen to anyone who calls jimi a bloated alcohol-addled corpse because he probably is one.

5 out of 5 stars Kiss the Sky Review.......2003-03-29

brilliant, ephemeral collection true to the bloated alcohol-addled corpse of jimi hendrix's spirit at it's best. The tracks are clean, crisply remastered, but the real brilliance lays in hendrix's masterful guitar work. This is not entirely surprising, Hendrix was a legend in his own time, and is still legendary today. His solo work moves smoothly, as Hendrix masterfully manipulates the guitar in that legendary way that only he could. But enough of those cheap thesarus jokes...

seriously, a great cd from a great artist, buy it for the music and the benefit of whoever owns Hendrix's royalties, but if you truly want to experience the guitar master's work you should buy his original cds, better yet LPs, not just a cheap compilation.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music regardless of your Phish fan status........2006-11-18

While I do like Phish, I don't own any of their CD's and I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan. However, I had the opportunity to hear this album and I was blown away. The arrangements and performances have a vitality to them that is refreshing, at times fun, at times intense, and all around just plain good music. I highly recommend giving this music a listen. You won't regret it.

      4 out of 5 stars A Different Take on a Great Band.......2006-08-07

I've encountered many different incarnations of Phish's music and haven't loved all of them to be honest. This album proved to be innovative and enjoyable. The interpretations are original and, for a true fan of the music, refreshing. An excellent tribute to the music.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome Arrangements!.......2005-02-15

This is an awesome compilation of classic Phish songs played in a classical format. My fiance gave this to me for my birthday and we listen to it all the time. I have been a Phishhead for years and was very impressed...a must have for something a little different!

4 out of 5 stars A completly new outlook on Phish ........2005-02-07

I was really surprised by this collection of Phish songs. The arrangements stay true to the original songs while also giving them a more "classical" twist.

I was a true Phishhead back in the day and have to say this opened the music up in a whole new way. I recommend it as a curious addition to any phans collection.

(I've also played it for people who never really liked Phish as a band and they enjoyed this CD even after I revealed the title.)

5 out of 5 stars The sound of Phish.......2005-02-01

This is a great CD- a must have for any hardcore Phish Phan. the mellow sound of phish is really captured within the sounds of flawless string work. a beautiful recreation of the greatest jam band of all time- don't miss out- add this one to your phish collection. appreciate the great work done by prestigious orchestrators to create an album great to listen to anytime!
