1957 was a busy year for the pianist Sonny Clark. Aside from Cool Struttin', he also released six other LPs on Blue Note. His astounding output, however, was cut short due to his premature death in 1963. The highlight of Clark's prolific period must be Cool Struttin', a session featuring a virtual who's who of Blue Note's then-rising young crop of hard-bop stars. The recording opens with the aptly named title cut, as Clark's jaunty, forward-leaning piano drives the tune with crisp precision. The rest of the disc (this edition contains the Rodgers and Hart tune "Lover," which did not appear on the original release) is a sterling example of late-50s, finger-poppin' bop with the likes of trumpeter Art Farmer, saxophonist Jackie McClean, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones stretching out and digging in. --S. DudaAlbum Description
Sonny Clark was ubiquitous at Blue Note sessions and led a handful of great albums of his own along the way. Cool Struttin' has a wonderful after-hours feel, especially on the extended title blues.Customer Reviews:
A Blue Note - Hard Bop Classic.......2007-05-21
Most jazz fanatics out there probably already own this Blue Note classic. Therefore, this review is aimed more for the novice jazz fan or perhaps someone (such as I five years ago) just learning about jazz after perhaps hearing it on the radio or satellite television. Well, all I can say is you can't go wrong making this purchase! First off, you have an all-star quintet led by the smooth as silk Sonny Clark (piano), joined by Art Farmer (trumpet), Jackie McClean (alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Despite the fact that most of these cats were blasted on drugs (particularly heroin) and booze at the time, they still turned in tremendous, top-notch performances. McClean does his best Charlie Parker imitation, squawking away his solos with reckless abandon and absolutely no fear. Like Art Farmer was quoted as saying in Nat Hentoff's original liner-notes, "Jackie has a feeling in his playing that you know immediately is him. He doesn't just copy." Yes, there is no doubt McClean has is own unique, original voice and this album is one of the prime examples of that. It is also, one of his best performances ever (see SWING, SWANG, SWINGIN and ONE STEP BEYOND for two more examples).
Art Farmer may not always be talked about in the same breath as others when one is mentioning the greatest trumpet players of all-time (i.e. Louis, Dizzy, Miles, Brownie, Freddie, Lee Morgan, et al...) but he definitely is worthy of praise. I don't know if I have ever heard Art Farmer not sound great. Sure he may lack the charisma and magnetism of a Miles Davis (his main influence as a musician), but I personally love his clean, controlled, consistent style. Sonny Clark on the keys has always been one of my favorites because in many ways he is the quintessential hard bop pianist (which is my personal favorite style of jazz). By the way, does anyone else think that Clark and Tommy Flanagan are the same person at times? The way they swing, their perfect control of melody, and the way they seem to glide across the keys with a soft, unique touch. Simply sensational!
Finally, there is no amount of hyperbole I can write about Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers that would ever do them justice. I have never read about any other drummer in the history of jazz (Rich, Roach, Blakey, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, etc...) that gets more compliments from his fellow musicians than Philly Joe Jones. My favorite quote was by Miles in his autobiography, "...he (Jones) knew everything I was going to do, everything I was going to play; he anticipated me, felt what I was thinking." And Paul Chambers is simply one of the top three bass players of all-time on just about every one's list, especially when it comes to hard-bop. The two of them are outstanding.
In 1963, at the early age of 31, Sonny Clark left this Earth way too soon like so many other jazz legends - Billie, Bird, Brownie, Coltrane, Jaco, LaFaro, Pettiford, Watkins, Powell, et al... I have to stop now, because I am getting depressed. However, all I have to do to start feeling good is press the play button on my stereo and once again start listening to this sensational, five-star recording.
This is one of the longest reviews I've ever written. But after all, it was that one song from this great album, that truly changed my life forever.
Love this album.......2005-11-01
This is a bebop gem! Thanks to RVG for including the awesome bonus tracks.
Great straight-ahead Hardbop.......2005-06-11
The opening title track is a funky and heavy swingin blues with a strong unison sound produced by Mclean and Farmer. Clark, Farmer, Mclean, and Chambers all solo like a log on the fire, slow burning. "Blue Minor" is obviously a minor keyed tune with extended solos that are simple but meaningful.
"Sippin" at the bell is a be-bop tune with a very melodically and Harmonically interesting tune. Jackie somewhat takes the role of Bird playing up and downscales with speed and accuracy.
"Deep Night" starts off with Clark, Chambers, and Jones in a Piano Trio-istic fashion with the horns taking their solos. The two bonus tracks include "Royal Flush" a Clark original and the standard "Lover".
The session is just heavy handed yet straight ahead jazz. Clark threw out all the fancy tricks and twists and turns and threw in simple yet unique tunes.
"Cool Struttin" is a classic.
Doesn't disappoint........2005-06-09
The Spotlight Review by Nate Dorward practically "nails" everything there is to know and notice about the recording. McLean is a tad less "sweet-sour" but still readily identifiable; Art Farmer is a happy, inspired choice for the reasons given by Dorward; Clark's bypassing a solo opportunity on the fast-moving changes of "Lover" raises questions about his facility, which was probably nowhere near Bud's.
If you want just one CD by Sonny Clark, or are a completist, or don't already have a lot of "classic," Van Gelder-engineered Blue Note sessions, you might easily consider this one an essential, five-star pick-up.

The Meters' Hat Trick.......2006-07-21
The quartet's seminal Josie recordings revitalized their hometown's music scene - of the eleven singles issued on Josie before the label went bankrupt late in 1971, ten were national hits. And the city's indigenous rhythmic identity was reinvigorated by the Meters, who are central in the evolution of soul into funk. "Sturttin'" itself has remarkable variety within a seemingly restrictive framework. "Chicken Strut," the first hit from this set, is noteable for its use of group 'vocals' - chicken-clucking led by drummer Joseph Modeliste. The followup, "Handclapping Song" also featured the group's singing in a more straightforward psychedelic soul context. Elsewhere Art Neville provides some nice leads: "Darling Darling Darling" is a lovely take on the 1963 hit issued by Chess. And Art's vocal on Jim Webb's "Wichita Lineman" is haunting and melancholy, with Leo Nocentelli's guitar panning from right to left, consistent with the song's telephone wire imagery. The closing version of Lee Dorsey's 1965 "Ride Your Pony" is a harder, more rocking version of a gem Allen Toussaint had already produced at least twice (Betty Harris also issued a version, around 1968).
Most of the rest of this highly enjoyable set is instumental, and the stunning rhythmic explorations on the previous albums "The Mob" and "Rigor Mortis" are again in evidence on "Liver Splash," "Joog" and others. Modeliste and George Porter lay down dense grooves, and Noceltelli's guitar ranges from his quintessential chicken scratching funk to a harder rock style, with his mellower Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell side less apparent than before.
This was to be The Meters' last official album for Josie, though in fact four more non-album singles would be issued through 1971, and all eight tracks from these can be found on Sundazed's marvelous "Zony Mash." The dense mix that sounds like a spicy musical gumbo would change somewhat when the band signed to Reprise (though those early Reprise albums offer their own pleasures), and if you like what you've heard by the early Meters or want to hear some truly inventive New Orleans funk, this album is endlessly listenable. As always, Sundazed has done an unparelleled job in capturing the detail and ambience on those early master tapes.
Keep on struttin' !!!.......2003-09-26
There's constant groove throughout this well organized but JAMMIN' album. A suitable amount of vocal tracks are included. The Glen Campbell cover "Wichita Lineman" (written by Jimmy Webb) was the first vocal ballad to be released by The Meters; that and the Roquel Davis cover gumboesque "Darling Darling Darling" are good variations from the rest of the material.
Two bonus tracks included! No disappointments what so ever! Yera phool notta git it!

I'm buying the CD because I wore out the tape.......2002-02-09
For us it is perfect background music for mellow parties, opening presents, dinner, etc. I have wonderful memories of listening to this tape in the car during long drives to the family.
But the CD is NOT elevator music - it's a quality collection, worth listening to with the volume up. Some of my Christmas jazz CDs tend to be un-imaginative saxophone versions of tired Christmas classics. Not this CD - the songs are original and creative.
Lastly, it is "approachable" - the kind of jazz that non-experts (like me) tend to understand and enjoy.

Re-released at last, feels like you're there.......2005-08-24
During the opening of Disneyland in 1955, Walt Disney initiated music programs at Disneyland that allowed top acts of the Day to play in several small intimate venues at the Disneyland Park. These were bands that went through the audition process, as well as famous groups. There was a bandstand by the Riverfront, they had acts perform at Plaza Garden, Frontierland Bandstand, New Orleans Square (built later than the rest), Tommorrowland stage, the Mark Twain Riverboat, and the Golden Horseshoe Saloon. Big acts like Louis Armstrong, Firehouse Five plus Two, Elliot Brothers, the Mellomen, all played Disneyland after dark on Fridays and Saturdays in June through September. This was known as "Date Night at Disneyland". Walt Disney had a strong regard for Dixieland music and in 1960 Disneyland begin hosting an annual Dixieland Festival in the fall. Eight groups would perform at one or other of the inddor and outdoor venues. Then an evening show was set up with thousands of chairs on the riverfront, and each band would take their turn playing on a raft that would slowly float back and forth in front of the crowd during it's set. This set is from the 1962 festival, and the recording is their live performance in the Plaza Garden, 6 tracks in all. Some are as long as 7 minutes, as the boys got improvisational as the mood hit them.
Included are th great original liner notes from the LP, in the CD booklet. And what a deal, we also get their 1964 Worlds Fair album thrown in, with 10 more tracks. Two re-mastered albums for the price of 1 CD. I highly reccommend!
Original Dukes of Dixieland.......2004-03-27
Struttin at the Worlds Fair is also very good. This recording is one of the last recordings that trombonist Fred Assunto did before he became ill. Trumpeter Frank Assunto's work is outstanding as usual. Also "Sweethearts on Parade" shows off Frank's fine singing voice. This CD is a must buy for the Real Dukes of Dixeland fan! Jerry Fuller on clarinet and Barrett Deems on drums are also featured.

While the former Rolling Stones bassist's prior solo releases were rather weedy singer-songwriter efforts, Struttin' Our Stuff is a pleasant diversion that's more along the lines of Wyman's '80s side-combo Willy and the Poorboys. On Struttin' Our Stuff, the ex-Stone teams up with an impressive assortment of famous friends for an impressively played but enjoyably casual set of rootsy originals and classic covers, including a soulful reworking of the '70s Stones tune "Melody." In addition to Wyman's trademark bass pulse and occasional vocals, the album features guest guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Albert Lee, frequent Stones sideman Bobby Keys on sax, and Procol Harum's Gary Brooker on piano. Guest vocals come from English R&B great Georgie Fame, Ace/Squeeze/Mike and the Mechanics singer Paul Carrack, and talented newcomer Beverly Skeete. --Scott SchinderCustomer Reviews:
A Sleeper CD Indeed.......2003-02-16
Some of the songs are jazz, others are blues, and there certainly is a dose of rock n roll to satisfy your soul. The guest vocals of Georgie Fame, Beerly Skeete, and others add plenty of depth to this collection. There are a few moments when Bill Wyman gets a vocal and in small doses his stylings are certainly more than passable. Can't Get Enough Of That Stuff and Going Crazy Overnight are CD highlights as Bill's voice works well with the arrangments.
Special appearances by Eric Clapton, Max Middleton(Jeff Beck's phenomenal Blow By Blow CD), and Peter Frampton are certainly worth noting. Truthfully it rates between four and five stars but I'm going to round it up to the five because it deserves more notoriety than its been getting.
STONE ALONE BILL WYMAN GATHER'S NO MOSS & RIP'S THE STONES!.......2002-12-10
Bill Wyman & The Rhythm Kings Struttin' Our Stuff on Velvel Records. This new CD is a must for every fan of Bill's and
the Rolling Stones! He has assembled a stellar cast of musicians alongside himself and the 12 tunes on this first release (part of
a 3 part trilogy) covering some of his favorite songs from the 20's-70's along with some new originals in that rootsy vein is
SPLENDID! This is one of the best releases I have heard in '98.Without any questions, Bill's bass, vocals, songwriting
arranging & overall production skills are solid. Highlights on this CD include: "Stuff," "Walking On My Own," remakes of the
Rolling Stones "Melody" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Green River" are primo. The overall production is pure &
simple. THIS CD BREATHES LIFE! Amongst some of the guest musicians lending a riff or voice here and there are Eric
Clapton, Peter Frampton, Georgie Fame, Albert Lee and Beverly Skeete best known for her voice as background vocalist
for R&B legend Chaka Khan. This girl WHIPS the vocals on a number of tunes. Horns are also featured on some cuts and
long time Rolling Stones sideman Bobby Keys adds his sax on the very smart "Motorvatin' Mama". I think I have said enough
"STUFF" about this new release. Now find out for yourself and pick it up. You will be surprised to the max! A MUST!

Product Description
19 track Charly (UK) compilation of 1960's Meters material which defined the New Orleans funk sound - and which reverberates to this very day. Whereas the Stax soul sound of Memphis was centered around Al Jackson's rock-solid steady beat, the Meters's sound hinged on Ziggy Modeliste's syncopated drumbeat which, impossibly, was tight and incredibly loose at the same time. Add George Porter's nimble low end, Leo Nocentelli's chicka-boom guitar and Art Neville's organ and you got yourself a satisfying gumbo unlike any other.
