1957 was a busy year for the pianist Sonny Clark. Aside from Cool Struttin', he also released six other LPs on Blue Note. His astounding output, however, was cut short due to his premature death in 1963. The highlight of Clark's prolific period must be Cool Struttin', a session featuring a virtual who's who of Blue Note's then-rising young crop of hard-bop stars. The recording opens with the aptly named title cut, as Clark's jaunty, forward-leaning piano drives the tune with crisp precision. The rest of the disc (this edition contains the Rodgers and Hart tune "Lover," which did not appear on the original release) is a sterling example of late-50s, finger-poppin' bop with the likes of trumpeter Art Farmer, saxophonist Jackie McClean, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones stretching out and digging in. --S. Duda

Album Description

Sonny Clark was ubiquitous at Blue Note sessions and led a handful of great albums of his own along the way. Cool Struttin' has a wonderful after-hours feel, especially on the extended title blues.

5 out of 5 stars A Blue Note - Hard Bop Classic.......2007-05-21

One day (about five years ago) I was cruising along in my car searching for something, ANYTHING, that was semi-pleasing to listen to on my car stereo. However, I was having one hell of a time finding anything decent - for it seems as if even the world of music nowadays is riddled with pollution. Alas, just as I was about to throw in the towel and settle for talk radio on AM (UGH!!! like that is any better!) I hear this jazz tune come on "Cool Struttin" and it was at that moment, because of that particular song, my love affair with jazz truly began. This album, along with about ten others (KIND OF BLUE - Miles Davis, MY FAVORITE THINGS - John Coltrane, SONG FOR MY FATHER - Horace Silver, SOMETHIN' ELSE - Cannonball Adderley etc...) was one of the first jazz albums I went out and purchased. Now of course "Cool Struttin" may not quite fall into the same category as the ones I listed above, but it's definitely, in my humble opinion, one notch right below them and still easily worthy of a five-star rating. It's recordings such as this that make me want to listen to jazz music twenty-four hours a day.

Most jazz fanatics out there probably already own this Blue Note classic. Therefore, this review is aimed more for the novice jazz fan or perhaps someone (such as I five years ago) just learning about jazz after perhaps hearing it on the radio or satellite television. Well, all I can say is you can't go wrong making this purchase! First off, you have an all-star quintet led by the smooth as silk Sonny Clark (piano), joined by Art Farmer (trumpet), Jackie McClean (alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Despite the fact that most of these cats were blasted on drugs (particularly heroin) and booze at the time, they still turned in tremendous, top-notch performances. McClean does his best Charlie Parker imitation, squawking away his solos with reckless abandon and absolutely no fear. Like Art Farmer was quoted as saying in Nat Hentoff's original liner-notes, "Jackie has a feeling in his playing that you know immediately is him. He doesn't just copy." Yes, there is no doubt McClean has is own unique, original voice and this album is one of the prime examples of that. It is also, one of his best performances ever (see SWING, SWANG, SWINGIN and ONE STEP BEYOND for two more examples).

Art Farmer may not always be talked about in the same breath as others when one is mentioning the greatest trumpet players of all-time (i.e. Louis, Dizzy, Miles, Brownie, Freddie, Lee Morgan, et al...) but he definitely is worthy of praise. I don't know if I have ever heard Art Farmer not sound great. Sure he may lack the charisma and magnetism of a Miles Davis (his main influence as a musician), but I personally love his clean, controlled, consistent style. Sonny Clark on the keys has always been one of my favorites because in many ways he is the quintessential hard bop pianist (which is my personal favorite style of jazz). By the way, does anyone else think that Clark and Tommy Flanagan are the same person at times? The way they swing, their perfect control of melody, and the way they seem to glide across the keys with a soft, unique touch. Simply sensational!

Finally, there is no amount of hyperbole I can write about Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers that would ever do them justice. I have never read about any other drummer in the history of jazz (Rich, Roach, Blakey, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, etc...) that gets more compliments from his fellow musicians than Philly Joe Jones. My favorite quote was by Miles in his autobiography, "...he (Jones) knew everything I was going to do, everything I was going to play; he anticipated me, felt what I was thinking." And Paul Chambers is simply one of the top three bass players of all-time on just about every one's list, especially when it comes to hard-bop. The two of them are outstanding.

In 1963, at the early age of 31, Sonny Clark left this Earth way too soon like so many other jazz legends - Billie, Bird, Brownie, Coltrane, Jaco, LaFaro, Pettiford, Watkins, Powell, et al... I have to stop now, because I am getting depressed. However, all I have to do to start feeling good is press the play button on my stereo and once again start listening to this sensational, five-star recording.

This is one of the longest reviews I've ever written. But after all, it was that one song from this great album, that truly changed my life forever.

5 out of 5 stars Love this album.......2005-11-01

Sonny is very cool and plays tasty straight ahead jazz throughout this date. He is brilliantly supported by the rythym section of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The chemistry and tonal quality of the horns is something special. The title track is a well recognised classic but "Blue Minor" is equally up there.

This is a bebop gem! Thanks to RVG for including the awesome bonus tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Great straight-ahead Hardbop.......2005-06-11

Sonny Clark, despite his exceptionally fluid stlye of playing, lead an odd life. It seems that from his playing you would think he was a happy man who was healthy and stayed away from drugs. Not so, he was a big heroin addict who spent long amounts of time away from the recording studio. He died at a mere 32 in a car accident which has become the fate of many other incredible musicians including Clifford brown and Ritchie Powell(Buds Brother) in the same accident, three great bassists including Scott LaFaro, Oscar Pettiford, and Doug Watkins. Aside from Clarks unfortunate life, he produced some very fine recordings with the top musicians of the time. On bass is Paul Chambers along with Philly Joe Jones on drums who were the backbone of Miles Davis' early quintet. Clark on piano, Art Farmer on Trumpet, and Jackie Mclean on Alto Sax. Mclean, who is known for his raw sharp alto playing is in an earlier stage and is much more mellow and fluid. Art farmer has a quieter more subdued sound yet produces some very interesting intervals. Clark is the ultimate treat, his light touch and very fluid and fast style reflects the influence of bud powell as well as earlier masters like Fats Waller and Art Tatum.

The opening title track is a funky and heavy swingin blues with a strong unison sound produced by Mclean and Farmer. Clark, Farmer, Mclean, and Chambers all solo like a log on the fire, slow burning. "Blue Minor" is obviously a minor keyed tune with extended solos that are simple but meaningful.
"Sippin" at the bell is a be-bop tune with a very melodically and Harmonically interesting tune. Jackie somewhat takes the role of Bird playing up and downscales with speed and accuracy.

"Deep Night" starts off with Clark, Chambers, and Jones in a Piano Trio-istic fashion with the horns taking their solos. The two bonus tracks include "Royal Flush" a Clark original and the standard "Lover".

The session is just heavy handed yet straight ahead jazz. Clark threw out all the fancy tricks and twists and turns and threw in simple yet unique tunes.

"Cool Struttin" is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't disappoint........2005-06-09

A once-forgotten session that apparently acquired a following when the Japanese discovered it in the seventies, "Cool Struttin'" lives up to expectations. Were it not for what is known these days as an "addictive personality," Clark might have taken his place alongside Barry Harris and Tommy Flanagan as an enduring presence among latter-day mainstream bop pianists. Certainly his flowing, ceaselessly inventive melodic lines explain Bill Evans' interest in this post-Powell interpreter.

The Spotlight Review by Nate Dorward practically "nails" everything there is to know and notice about the recording. McLean is a tad less "sweet-sour" but still readily identifiable; Art Farmer is a happy, inspired choice for the reasons given by Dorward; Clark's bypassing a solo opportunity on the fast-moving changes of "Lover" raises questions about his facility, which was probably nowhere near Bud's.

If you want just one CD by Sonny Clark, or are a completist, or don't already have a lot of "classic," Van Gelder-engineered Blue Note sessions, you might easily consider this one an essential, five-star pick-up.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Struttin'.......2005-03-13

I first heard Sonny Clark on Dexter Gordon's "Go!" (see my review) and was super impressed with his very laid-back style and great ear. Seeing that this album had Jackie McLean, probably my second favorite altoist, among the personnel, I knew immediately that it would be good. I was definitely right since this great hard bop session captures the "Blue Note Sound" of the late 50's/early 60's perfectly. The personnel is an all-star group consisting of Art Farmer on trumpet, McLean on alto, Sonny, and Miles's great unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The title track and "Blue Minor" are very bluesy tracks, with the title track being taken at a slower tempo than "Blue Minor". The type of blues solos that are heard on these tracks are nothing short of phenomenal, yet are very simple. "Sippin' At Bells" is a not-so-done Charlie Parker/Miles Davis tune that really is treated very well here. You really get to hear Parker's influence on the then young McLean. "Deep Night" is a very soothing tune, with Sonny's piano taking the spotlight. It really is a shame that he didn't get a chance to record more due to his incredibly short life, since he definitely ranks up there with the best of 'em and is my favorite jazz pianist. The next two tracks were previously unreleased until the RVG edition ("Royal Flush" and "Lover") and are both exceptional hard bop performances. If you are into the "Blue Note Sound", then look no further than "Cool Struttin'", one of the best hard bop sessions of all time.

3 out of 5 stars A good funk/soul package!.......2007-07-30

This is the third album by the Meters and introduced vocals to their style. I still prefer the instrumentals on this disc but the vocal numbers are good and lively. I only have one diificulty with not giving this 4 stars or more; the track "Wichita Lineman" just doesn't feel like it's part of this album. Listened in isolation it's fine, but it goes against the feel of the album as a whole. And "Chicken Strut" is just plain funny, in a goofy sort of way.

5 out of 5 stars The Meters' Hat Trick.......2006-07-21

The Meters' "Struttin'" (released June 1970) was their third classic for the Josie label. Recorded back at Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio (the amazing "Look-Ka Py Py" was made at La Fevre in Atlanta the previous summer), it is both of a piece with its two predecessors and an indication of their ongoing evolution.
The quartet's seminal Josie recordings revitalized their hometown's music scene - of the eleven singles issued on Josie before the label went bankrupt late in 1971, ten were national hits. And the city's indigenous rhythmic identity was reinvigorated by the Meters, who are central in the evolution of soul into funk. "Sturttin'" itself has remarkable variety within a seemingly restrictive framework. "Chicken Strut," the first hit from this set, is noteable for its use of group 'vocals' - chicken-clucking led by drummer Joseph Modeliste. The followup, "Handclapping Song" also featured the group's singing in a more straightforward psychedelic soul context. Elsewhere Art Neville provides some nice leads: "Darling Darling Darling" is a lovely take on the 1963 hit issued by Chess. And Art's vocal on Jim Webb's "Wichita Lineman" is haunting and melancholy, with Leo Nocentelli's guitar panning from right to left, consistent with the song's telephone wire imagery. The closing version of Lee Dorsey's 1965 "Ride Your Pony" is a harder, more rocking version of a gem Allen Toussaint had already produced at least twice (Betty Harris also issued a version, around 1968).
Most of the rest of this highly enjoyable set is instumental, and the stunning rhythmic explorations on the previous albums "The Mob" and "Rigor Mortis" are again in evidence on "Liver Splash," "Joog" and others. Modeliste and George Porter lay down dense grooves, and Noceltelli's guitar ranges from his quintessential chicken scratching funk to a harder rock style, with his mellower Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell side less apparent than before.
This was to be The Meters' last official album for Josie, though in fact four more non-album singles would be issued through 1971, and all eight tracks from these can be found on Sundazed's marvelous "Zony Mash." The dense mix that sounds like a spicy musical gumbo would change somewhat when the band signed to Reprise (though those early Reprise albums offer their own pleasures), and if you like what you've heard by the early Meters or want to hear some truly inventive New Orleans funk, this album is endlessly listenable. As always, Sundazed has done an unparelleled job in capturing the detail and ambience on those early master tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Keep on struttin' !!!.......2003-09-26

This is one of the greater Meters recordings. It was released in 1970. Absolutely dirty - exactly the way it should be! It's the third and last Meters album to feature that really raw, dirty, early seventies sound (distant drumkit, distorted hammond, picky guitar in your left ear and a fat P-bass right in your face).
There's constant groove throughout this well organized but JAMMIN' album. A suitable amount of vocal tracks are included. The Glen Campbell cover "Wichita Lineman" (written by Jimmy Webb) was the first vocal ballad to be released by The Meters; that and the Roquel Davis cover gumboesque "Darling Darling Darling" are good variations from the rest of the material.
Two bonus tracks included! No disappointments what so ever! Yera phool notta git it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Neville stuff!.......2003-07-23

I was looking for more New Orleans funk, after hearing the Neville Brothers "Brother's Keeper" and "Family Groove" albums. These are great. Mostly instrumental and very funky!!

5 out of 5 stars Make mine FUNKY!!.......2002-08-15

Absolutely timeless stuff. Sounds as good today as when it was new, maybe even better. Todays jam bands could learn a thing or three from these early Meters records. In fact, nobody has even come close to capturing their sound decades later.Chicken Strut, Ride Your Pony and Funky Meters Soul are highlights on a cd full of them, but I admit to buying this particular disc for an awesome version of Wichita Lineman (!). If you're reading this, do your bad self a favor and buy this cd or any of the Meters other great sets. Money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Elvin Bishop-struttin' my stuff.......2004-02-10

I first heard a couple of cuts off of this CD when I was in Navy bootcamp in San Diego, CA I was just barely aware of Elvin at this time. I later saw him live at Orange County fair around 1980. His music reminds me of a nice country drive in an old pickup truck, with a fishin' pole and a six-pack in the cooler. I've always been a fan and will continue to be.

4 out of 5 stars Mickey Thomas before Starship.......2001-03-25

Before he took over as lead singer for Jefferson Starship, Mickey Thomas did the same for Elvin Bishop. "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" is a classic example of Mickey's incredible vocal ability. This recording brings back memories of the golden age of multi-track analog recording; 1974 to 1981.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Tunes.......2000-09-28

I was 16 when I first heard this record. My friend taped me about 4 songs of his dad's original LP and we got in the car, he put it in. I was pretty much blown away. The Title song "Strutting My Stuff" Would have to be the album's best. Followed Closely by "I Love This Life I Lead". But Elvin Bishop seems more than just about funk music, he seems like the type of guy that would have burned out in the 70's if only anyone was paying attention. It is a shame this album didn't get enough attention because it is quite good. The most recognizable tune on the whole album is "Fooled Around and Fell in Love".

I own many Christmas CDs. This one ranks in the Top 3. From the first track "Vauncing Chimes" on you are in for a smooth experience. Enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars I'm buying the CD because I wore out the tape.......2002-02-09

I own about 6 or more Christmas jazz CDs/tapes but this remains my favorite - so much so that we now have to buy it again because we wore our the tape.

For us it is perfect background music for mellow parties, opening presents, dinner, etc. I have wonderful memories of listening to this tape in the car during long drives to the family.

But the CD is NOT elevator music - it's a quality collection, worth listening to with the volume up. Some of my Christmas jazz CDs tend to be un-imaginative saxophone versions of tired Christmas classics. Not this CD - the songs are original and creative.

Lastly, it is "approachable" - the kind of jazz that non-experts (like me) tend to understand and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Blues & Jazz Lovers - Yule enjoy this Compilation.......2001-09-26

This is a jazzy blues yuletide compilation with classic jazz artists such as Chet Baker, Count Basie and Dexter Gordon playing some traditional holiday favorites. In addition, two versions of an original Thelonious Monk composition called "A Merrier Christmas" are also included. Contemporary jazz artists such as John Scofield and Benny Green also perform some compositions and vocal tracks by Lou Rawls and Dianne Reeves further add to the overall diversity of this compilation.

For those who can appreciate a more melancholic blend of yuletide jazz & blues, this is a great addition to the holiday collection.

5 out of 5 stars Struttin with Santa !.......2000-12-31

I bought this CD a couple years ago and enjoyed it somewhat at the time, only to re-discover it this Christmas season and now I find I am playing it constantly! There are a variety of styles here, from quiet piano to small combo to big band to loud, noisy contemporary arrangements. It all fits together very well, surprisingly enough, though I usually skip over the two vocal tracks. The cover and the title are references to a classic bop album of the fifties, Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin'.

5 out of 5 stars Great holiday listening.......1998-12-04

I've had this CD for several years and it is my favorite Holiday collection - lots of fun, jazzy arrangements which are festive, original and sure to cure your holiday blues. Instrumental Talent - not breathy synthesized fru fru music. If you like music live, jazz or blues, this is for you.

    5 out of 5 stars It's so authentic.......2006-05-13

Who can say something additional about this wonder? You can taste every track with delight. You can relax with it at home; you can play it while driving, you will have a great companionship with this music; it will never let you down. It's so authentic, so frank, so good; no strange effects, sophistications or commercial tricks. No need of it. It is sold by itself perfectly, with its quality and artistry. Now there are a lot of records loaded with artificiality to trap a big mass of consumers; thanks god, the pureness of this music doesn't need any of these things; it's like Beethoven, it's 5th symphony is sold by itself. A masterpiece, never miss it.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely.......2005-12-16

How did it take me so long? A Blue Note classic! Like millions of other Blue Note records, only more so. All the reviewers are right to keep their reviews so short. What is there really to say? Everybody's blowing, the groove is cool and funky. Blue Minor is a minor masterpiece...you need it!

5 out of 5 stars Sassy , yet very classy...........2001-12-16

I'll admit, the album cover brought this CD to my attention. It reminded me of the classy late 50's and early 60's (of which I never had the opportunity to experience). When I actually listened to this disk I felt as though I had been transported to an early 60's night club where anybody who's anybody goes to be seen. The soft swing of Clark's piano, the cool fingered stylings of Paul Chamber's bass - what a combo! Judge this book by the cover baby! Dim the lights, grab a drink, grab your girl, and enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars So Cool!.......2000-02-29

This epitomizes the "cool jazz" thing. It's been in my CD player on constant rotation for the past five hours. This is classic Blue Note - great music, great cover! It's got that great late 50's feel. Go get it.

5 out of 5 stars cool cat jazz.......2000-02-25

...it's cool, it's swinging, it's definitly Blue Note! I can't get enough from this album. Cover, music, year, label - perfect!

    5 out of 5 stars Re-released at last, feels like you're there.......2005-08-24

This fantastic and popular Dixieland jazz band played at Disneyland, and this is a live recording of their show there in 1962. The Dukes original LP "Disneyland" album has been out of print for awhile, but is valued by collectors as not only the groups best work, but one of the hottest Dixieland Jazz records ever made - period! Now it has been re-released at last in 2004 on the "Collectibles" label and we are thankful. It is a live album, and some of the old standards are longer and more improvised. The onstage banter is really nice to hear, like a window in time. The audience knows how lucky they are to see these guys in person.

During the opening of Disneyland in 1955, Walt Disney initiated music programs at Disneyland that allowed top acts of the Day to play in several small intimate venues at the Disneyland Park. These were bands that went through the audition process, as well as famous groups. There was a bandstand by the Riverfront, they had acts perform at Plaza Garden, Frontierland Bandstand, New Orleans Square (built later than the rest), Tommorrowland stage, the Mark Twain Riverboat, and the Golden Horseshoe Saloon. Big acts like Louis Armstrong, Firehouse Five plus Two, Elliot Brothers, the Mellomen, all played Disneyland after dark on Fridays and Saturdays in June through September. This was known as "Date Night at Disneyland". Walt Disney had a strong regard for Dixieland music and in 1960 Disneyland begin hosting an annual Dixieland Festival in the fall. Eight groups would perform at one or other of the inddor and outdoor venues. Then an evening show was set up with thousands of chairs on the riverfront, and each band would take their turn playing on a raft that would slowly float back and forth in front of the crowd during it's set. This set is from the 1962 festival, and the recording is their live performance in the Plaza Garden, 6 tracks in all. Some are as long as 7 minutes, as the boys got improvisational as the mood hit them.

Included are th great original liner notes from the LP, in the CD booklet. And what a deal, we also get their 1964 Worlds Fair album thrown in, with 10 more tracks. Two re-mastered albums for the price of 1 CD. I highly reccommend!

5 out of 5 stars Original Dukes of Dixieland.......2004-03-27

This is a CD of two "original" Dukes of Dixieland recordings. The Dukes at Disneyland (1962) and Stuttin at the World's Fair (1964). Both are great sessions, the one at Disneyland is live and includes some great songs which are longer in length than most of the previous Assunto's recordings. This may be considered their best recording. The songs "Saints", "Royal Garden Blues" and "Canal Sreet Blues" are really great.

Struttin at the Worlds Fair is also very good. This recording is one of the last recordings that trombonist Fred Assunto did before he became ill. Trumpeter Frank Assunto's work is outstanding as usual. Also "Sweethearts on Parade" shows off Frank's fine singing voice. This CD is a must buy for the Real Dukes of Dixeland fan! Jerry Fuller on clarinet and Barrett Deems on drums are also featured.

5 out of 5 stars Pete Fountain Fan.......2004-03-24

Two great recordings from one of the greatest jazz bands ever. Highlights include: Original Dixieland Jazz Band One-Step, Wolverine Blues, Washington Post March and more. This will grab you and keep you going. Highly recommended, as are all of the Real (Assunto) Dukes recordings.

While the former Rolling Stones bassist's prior solo releases were rather weedy singer-songwriter efforts, Struttin' Our Stuff is a pleasant diversion that's more along the lines of Wyman's '80s side-combo Willy and the Poorboys. On Struttin' Our Stuff, the ex-Stone teams up with an impressive assortment of famous friends for an impressively played but enjoyably casual set of rootsy originals and classic covers, including a soulful reworking of the '70s Stones tune "Melody." In addition to Wyman's trademark bass pulse and occasional vocals, the album features guest guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Albert Lee, frequent Stones sideman Bobby Keys on sax, and Procol Harum's Gary Brooker on piano. Guest vocals come from English R&B great Georgie Fame, Ace/Squeeze/Mike and the Mechanics singer Paul Carrack, and talented newcomer Beverly Skeete. --Scott Schinder

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Sleeper CD Indeed.......2003-02-16

This CD definitely falls into the category of "Hidden Gem". Loaded with fresh arrangements and spunky instrumentation, Struttin' Our Stuff is possibly no definitely the best solo release by a Rolling Stone band member.

Some of the songs are jazz, others are blues, and there certainly is a dose of rock n roll to satisfy your soul. The guest vocals of Georgie Fame, Beerly Skeete, and others add plenty of depth to this collection. There are a few moments when Bill Wyman gets a vocal and in small doses his stylings are certainly more than passable. Can't Get Enough Of That Stuff and Going Crazy Overnight are CD highlights as Bill's voice works well with the arrangments.

Special appearances by Eric Clapton, Max Middleton(Jeff Beck's phenomenal Blow By Blow CD), and Peter Frampton are certainly worth noting. Truthfully it rates between four and five stars but I'm going to round it up to the five because it deserves more notoriety than its been getting.

5 out of 5 stars STONE ALONE BILL WYMAN GATHER'S NO MOSS & RIP'S THE STONES!.......2002-12-10

Former Rolling Stones founding member that `Stone Alone' bassist Bill Wyman is back in action with a very cool new album
Bill Wyman & The Rhythm Kings Struttin' Our Stuff on Velvel Records. This new CD is a must for every fan of Bill's and
the Rolling Stones! He has assembled a stellar cast of musicians alongside himself and the 12 tunes on this first release (part of
a 3 part trilogy) covering some of his favorite songs from the 20's-70's along with some new originals in that rootsy vein is

SPLENDID! This is one of the best releases I have heard in '98.Without any questions, Bill's bass, vocals, songwriting
arranging & overall production skills are solid. Highlights on this CD include: "Stuff," "Walking On My Own," remakes of the
Rolling Stones "Melody" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Green River" are primo. The overall production is pure &
simple. THIS CD BREATHES LIFE! Amongst some of the guest musicians lending a riff or voice here and there are Eric

Clapton, Peter Frampton, Georgie Fame, Albert Lee and Beverly Skeete best known for her voice as background vocalist
for R&B legend Chaka Khan. This girl WHIPS the vocals on a number of tunes. Horns are also featured on some cuts and
long time Rolling Stones sideman Bobby Keys adds his sax on the very smart "Motorvatin' Mama". I think I have said enough
"STUFF" about this new release. Now find out for yourself and pick it up. You will be surprised to the max! A MUST!

talented, rich ,mix and match,,driven drugged and dragged off

can't get enough of that stuff---but enjoy them rhythyms

Well there is more there that needs to be said
spent, sung ,drunk , kicked around , swallowed and taken out for a dance of long sufering , everloving foot stomping STUFF

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff, Great Fun -Roll with it.......2000-05-31

This album is a throwback and tribute to great blues over the past 40 years--Bill Wyman has put a great cast together to drive this music home to the 1990'and hereafter. The music holds together with strong rhythym, powerful vocals and a nice selection-it ain't heavy , but it's a lot of fun- you get the sense that Wyman and friends really enjoyed putting this album together--to paraphrase a line from one of my favorite pieces- ya gotta get this stuff . . . .

    3 out of 5 stars Bill's 2nd Career Off To Great Start.......1999-12-30

Everyone thought he was nuts for leaving the Stones, but Bill shows that there is more to life than being a Stone. Thankfully, Bill's original compositions are few - he learned his lesson with the solo albums he released during his tenure with the Stones. Instead, Bill fills this disc with old blues, jazz, and rhythm & blues numbers performed by a collection of crack musicians. Bill sings a few tunes (unfortunately) but they're tolerable. The disc makes one ready for the next two in the planned trilogy.

19 track Charly (UK) compilation of 1960's Meters material which defined the New Orleans funk sound - and which reverberates to this very day. Whereas the Stax soul sound of Memphis was centered around Al Jackson's rock-solid steady beat, the Meters's sound hinged on Ziggy Modeliste's syncopated drumbeat which, impossibly, was tight and incredibly loose at the same time. Add George Porter's nimble low end, Leo Nocentelli's chicka-boom guitar and Art Neville's organ and you got yourself a satisfying gumbo unlike any other.
