Thirty or so of Stevie Wonder's biggest hits--many of them enduring classics--make up this double disc. That's the good news. The bad news is that they're sequenced here about as well (or maybe not) as your CD player's "random" function might do it. Leading off with "Part-Time Lover"--a major chart record, no doubt, but hardly the rouser you'd expect for an opener--is puzzling enough. It's when the programming starts veering from highlights of his self-produced period ("Sir Duke") to Motown assembly-line pieces ("My Cherie Amour") that the head-scratching really begins. And don't try to count the great moments that are missing. This will do in a pinch, but if you own no Stevie, be advised that better overviews of Wonder's career (the finest by far being the four-CD box At the Close of a Century) are available. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

This is THE BEST sound quality I have ever heard
for the Crests.Every song is crisp&clear.Mastered with love.
Carey Mansfield and the crew at Varese Sarabande deserve kudos.Mastering by Marty Wekser is crisp and warm unlike other Crests disc which are either muddy 4th Generation or overly boosted and tinney.

Nothing's ever topped the golden age of soul for party music, and this four-CD set offers the distilled essence of the good times from those difficult years. Where Rhino's Beg, Scream & Shout! and Can You Dig It? compilations are thoughtful, wide-reaching surveys of the range of soul music in the '60s and '70s, respectively, Soul Spectacular! has exactly one thing on its track listing: mammoth crossover hits that add up to one blockbuster of a party. Of its 90 tracks (all presented in their original single versions), 47 were No. 1 and 15 topped the Pop and R&B charts. As such, the poles the set revolves around are Detroit (the Apollonian glories of Motown and Hot Wax: refined, orchestrated, and quality controlled) and Memphis (the Dionysian thrills of Stax, Volt, and the scene around them: raw jams that sounded like they'd been caught on tape by happy accident), but every other place in the country that was capable of turning out a national smash is represented, too. The '60s, for these purposes, extend back to definitive 1959 hits by Ray Charles and Barrett Strong; the '70s of soul peter out sometime around 1974, with a final appearance courtesy of the Manhattans' aptly named "Kiss and Say Goodbye," from 1976. By then, the vocal intensity of soul was taking a back seat to the new and slicker beats of funk and disco. But Soul Spectacular! is also a tribute to an era of independence and innovation, the years when tiny labels (their names like found poetry: Nola, Arctic, Par-Lo, Ovide, Bamboo) could make the whole country dance for a few weeks, if only because they found a groove nobody had discovered before. --Douglas WolkAlbum Description

No Sam or Stevie?.......2006-03-02
Rhino 4CD Soul Box Familiar , "Spectacular" Starter Set.......2004-12-23
But the more than 20 years since have seen these songs anthologized countless times on soundtracks, hits and anthology collections (yours truly once owned every one of these songs in one recorded format or another) and played daily on oldies radio. (Barbara Mason's grand 1965 original, "Yes I'm Ready," far from the biggest hit here, has aired more than one million times.)
This collection's best and worst point is its familiarity. Even casual pop music fans know the signature songs of the Temptations, Mary Wells, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King and others here. No choice is a glaring misstep but some are questionable: why "I Count the Tears" from the Drifters instead of 1964's more popular "Under the Boardwalk" or 1959's more influential "There Goes My Baby?" Why James Brown's now-cliched "I Got You (I Feel Good)" over "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," one of music's most aggressive, important singles? Let alone essential performers (Sam Cooke? The Dells? Jerry Butler?) left out altogether. Motown, pop culture's most active recycling plant, whips through 1962-3 songs from the Miracles, Vandellas and Supremes; only three Motown hits are heard across discs 2-3.
Those two middle discs are the set's best as they zip through a variety of styles: Muscle Shoals soul (Sledge, Brook Benton) Philadelphia (Fantastic Johnny C, Intruders, Delfonics), Chicago (Barbara Acklin, Billy Stewart) and, of course, Memphis and Detroit giants. Each artist is represented by one song except Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, featured on solo and duet track each. The liner notes tell little more than oft-told tales of Stax and Motown's records respective founding.
"Soul Spectacular" is just that; 90 clear-sounding classics worth playing at any party or road trip without a dud in the bunch (at least until deep into disc four with one too many smooth Philadelphia International ballads in a row.) It's a first-class soul starter set, with greatest hits sets from any major individual artist listed an essential buy.
A True Spectacular Even Without Mr. Cooke!.......2004-06-30
Ok, it doesn't include Sam Cooke, but hey, you can't have everything! It has NEARLY everything BUT Sam Cooke!
Rhino obviously couldn't obtain the rights to Sam's music, but they have done a great job of obtaining some of the best of the Stax/Volt, Atlantic, Motown and other great Soul Recording Labels!
Several of these tunes have been PLAYED TO DEATH by 'Oldies' radio formats-- MOST OF THE MOTOWN STUFF--, but there are many gems in this set of CD's amongst the 'standards'--Gems like CRY BABY by Garnett Mimms, WALKING THE DOG by Rufus Thomas, MEMPHIS SOUL STEW by King Curtis, LOVE IS A HURTIN' THING by Lou Rawls, and oh so many more! There are 88 songs to choose from, and if you want a decent collection of Soul & R&B oldies, this is it!
I am a bit of a musicologist and
have studied this music for 20 plus years, and I must say that this is a very groovy 4 CD set for Musical Novices and Experts alike! I'm impressed!
I didn't rate it 5 stars because I agree that leaving Mr. Cooke out is not cool!
Brilliant, Cooke or no Cooke.......2002-05-18

Stevie Wonder grew up fast, as Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 makes plain. Collecting both Motown assembly-line gems ("My Cherie Amour") and the first flashes of his self-contained '70s funk-rock style ("Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours," a terrific cover of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out"), this 20-bit remaster disc is a must-own, particularly for Original Musiquarium fans looking for insight into Wonder's artistic growth. It's far from mere research material, though; the cream of this genius's early work is some of Motown's best. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Classic Stevie Wonder.......2007-06-03
the final conclusion of his motown era(1967-1971).......2004-12-25
the songs on this second collection of his greatest hits are not in chronological order, but it provides a great reflection of his growth as a prolific songwriter from this four year period.the only song on this collection that is not available on his regular motown albums is 'travelin'man'(1967)which is another classic wonder recording.for some strange reason, it was omitted (along with other more original superior songs that were held in the vaults from this same 1967 period) by motown from being included on his 1967 album "i was made to love her"what a terrible mistake of omission by motown!and it(along with the other more superior songs)were replaced with filler remakes of other songs! it was written by ron miller and bryan wells and was produced by wonder's older mentor, clarence paul.'travelin'man'was originally released on wonder's triple record album "looking back" which was released by motown in 1977,and is also available on a double disc set entitled "essential stevie wonder" which includes rarities such as 'kiss me baby'(1965)which was written by stevie and his older mentor clarence paul/and a live firecracker remake of 'high heel sneakers'(1965)/'happy street'(1964)from the album,"stevie at the beach"/'don't you feel it'(1964)/and the rare original single 'i call it pretty music, but the old people call it the blues'(1962)which was written by berry gordy and clarence paul.
heaven help us all.......2003-11-19
and being 10 or 11 years old the first song that comes
to my mind is track# 10,it was perfect for
that time and that place, after the riots and
everything else it was on time.i'm buying
the disc just for that song.
Genius, Part II.......2003-08-25
Wonder proved his genius with great records like "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," "If You Really Love Me," "For Once In My Life," "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday," and "My Cherie Amour," and he took on the other musical giants of the day, successfully reworking the Beatles "We Can Work It Out."
The syrupy "Never Dreamed You'd Leave Me In Summer" exposes the Achilles heal that has always dogged Wonder's career; such esoteric records gave credance to critics who argued that Wonder was more interested in displaying his musical genius than entertaining his audience. But the cream has always outwayed the crud on Wonder records.
Buy this CD, GREATEST HITS VOL. 1, and both volumes of ORIGINAL MUSIQUARIUM to build an overview of one of America's true musical geniuses.

ONE OF MY FAVORITES..........2006-11-01
Good collection from Gordy's successors to J5.......2003-12-23
Fortunately, their greatest hits has most of the better songs from that album, such as the first three songs. The title track was their biggest hit, peaking at #3 in the US, and the festive sounds in the background add to its appeal. Oh, and Diane Warren wrote this song too!
The reflective ballad, "Who's Holding Donna Now," features some nice piano-style keyboards was also a Top Ten hit and with the
Rumour: I heard they are going to redo this song and make it about Britney. The new title--"Who's Kissing Madonna Now"? Just kidding.
The mid-paced "You Wear It Well" has a sound close to Prince's "Uptown", though the lyrics obviously have nothing to do with the sexual identity explored in that song.
"Stop! Don't Tease Me" is typical R&B/funk/pop fare, featuring horns and a bass synth, more upbeat than what's to follow. "I Like It" is their first single and features leisure horn arrangements. Randy shares vocal duties with El, and the falsetto vocals in the chorus definitely aren't bad either.
Two more of their early hits were the leisurely ballad "All This Love", featuring strings and harmony vocals, and "Time Will Reveal", another ballad in the same mold which showcased El's falsetto vocals.
"Love Me In A Special Way" is yet another ballad featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica.
There's a neat form of symmetry, as the last three tracks are also from Rhythm Of The Night. The schmaltzy slow dance strings ballad, laced with strings "Share My World" has El and Bunny on vocals. Bunny's vocals are nice, but I doubt if she would've made it as a solo singer. Most of the time, she and El sing together. The Giorgio Moroder-penned "Single Heart" from the soundtrack to DC Cab (anyone remember that movie with Mr. T and Irene Cara?) is a loneliness ballad reflecting the feelings of Albert in the movie. Also an El and Bunny duet, which moves into a catchy beat in the choruses.
And then, a song whose sage lessons I've painfully learned this year and will now forever heed: "The Heart Is Not So Smart." Diane Warren wrote this, so it's my own fault for not listening. The calypso-like vibes also mark this song. "Everytime your mind wants you to stay away, your heart just looks the other way."
It's safe to say that with El DeBarge's solo career in 1985 and Bunny DeBarge's departure in 1987, that the group's importance faded with the loss of those vital two. And Chico DeBarge's solo single "Talk To Me" and his later arrest didn't help much either. Still, it's good they established something with the songs from Rhythm Of The Night.
One of a kind.......2003-04-30

So what? Most of that was lost on the world. So please, buy this CD for what it is, some of the most beautiful melodies ever created. These songs make today's typical RnB fare sound like folk ditties. My only small criticism is that "My Life Begins With You," and "Queen Of My Heart" are not included. Other than that, Sublime.

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell famously achieved the sympatico of true lovers on record, but not in real life, where they remained close friends. Hits such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "You're All I Need to Get By," collected here, brim with the joy of great vocalizing--some of Gaye's most inspiring swoops are in these grooves--and romantic ideals. Among this disc's finds is the lesser-known single "Keep On Lovin' Me Honey," two minutes and 29 seconds of orchestrated heaven that will burn into your brain and heart as indelibly as the big smashes. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Anybody Who Loves Soul Needs This.......2007-01-27
Their harmonies couldn't be beat: many listeners thought Terrell brought out the best in Gaye, who did, certainly, have many other hits. Some people tag "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" as one of the greatest dancing songs ever recorded; others point to the changes Gaye made in the song, from the also best-selling version by Gladys Knight and The Pips; Gaye's version actually told a story.
As is well-known, Terrell left us too soon, of natural causes, when she was barely hitting her stride. As is also well-known, Gaye also left us much too soon (he's one of the triumvirate of great soul singers, including Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, who left us much too young, and through regrettably violent deaths.) But Gaye and Terrell have left their soaring voices with us, and anybody who loves soul should have this record.
