The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

PUT 'EM IN A BOX - Doris Day & the Page Cavanaugh Trio (1948)
THE TROLLEY SONG - Judy Garland & MGM Studio Chorus (1944)
WUNDERBAR - Kathryn Grayson & Howard Keel (two of MGM's favorite singing duos) (1953)
It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

KC and the Sunshine Band, led by Harry Wayne Casey, brought a bit of male bravado to the predominantly diva-led disco scene. KC and company incorporated a Caribbean feel to their music, with swelling--and staccato--horn parts and multilayered vocals. The repetition of the choruses of "Shake Your Booty" and "That's the Way (I Like It)" had every gold-chain wearing male on the dance floor singing along. While these hits, and "Get Down Tonight," are now disco cultural reference points, "Sound Your Funky Horn," a minor hit earlier in the band's career, has more of an island feel to it. The Best of KC and the Sunshine Band provides a fairly broad sampling of the Sunshine Band's music, including "Keep It Comin' Love," "I'm Your Boogie Man," and the tropical funk of "Boogie Shoes." --Steve GdulaAlbum Description

Still Streaking After All These Years .......2006-12-21
That's just more proof that old school streaking is still the best! I've stuck to the tried and true 70's style, while others have been more trendy: In the 80's, a lot of the guys stopped using KC as their streak music. Many competitors started to wax their chest hair and streak to songs like "Danger Zone" from Top Gun. (Some streaked while holding sparklers, while others ran with those orange "hey plane, this way" flashlights). By the late-eighties, one guy streaked to Motley Crue songs -- he ran with a javelin, and every 50 feet he'd plant it in the ground and do a quick pole dance before streaking some more!
Others have punctuated their streaks with break dancing, head banging with extended "Ozzy finger signs", and the 90's craze of slow, aimless, "mope" streaking.
But KC and the Sunshine Band have never went away! They "Keep It Coming Love"! And they "Get Down Tonight" and *every* night! They are the biggest inspiration and soundtrack in the history of streaking!!! So when a good streaker makes your day or even improves your life, you can thank KC and the Sunshine Band!!!!

Great collection, makes you heart and soul rock & roll.......2005-12-14
The great thing with Huey Lewis is that he has his own simple style, that it`s easy to remember. From the first track Power of Love (from the hit movie Back to the Future) to the last one Track 17 Back in Time ( also from Back to the Future) you talkin` "rock and roll, man". This is the real thing when it comes to how you should write songs which tells you how it was back in the 80 ths. Because this is the sound of the 80 ths, with synth symphonies that bring you in to a good mood. Sometimes it sounds like "sodastream music" who makes you think pink. Most of the Huey Lewis hit`s from the 80 ths are included here. The one that realy put your soul in to gear is the Track 9 The heart of Rock % Roll, and also Track 12 Stuck with You, shows much of the same "real thing quality". So if Huey Lewis and the News are new to you this is a very good introduction. It`s realy a coooool listening if you close your`e eyes and want to bring memories from the 80 ths back again. You know it`s so Hip to be Square
Great compilation but ! .......2005-08-22
RIPOFF!.......2004-08-28
What Time Flies should've been.......2004-04-16
God knew how much I wanted a great Huey Lewis & The News CD, so He gave me an idea recently. Instead of waiting for another American compilation to be released, find out if there's a good import of their greatest studio hits. That's how I came up on this, a UK import entitled The Heart of Rock & Roll: The Best of Huey Lewis & The News. This excellent one-disc collection has the four essential big hits that I was dying to have in my library that Time Flies left off for some unknown reason.
"Jacob's Ladder" was one of three songs to hit #1 for the band. "Walking on a Thin Line" is a vastly underrated song of the 80s, featuring one of the band's best hooks. "Perfect World" should be a major anthem song that the world knows by heart, just like Queen's "We Will Rock You" and Kool & The Gang's "Celebration." Just think about it. The next time the Yankees lose in the World Series, the opposing team's stadium could play "Perfect World," and it would fit to a tee! "Hip To Be Square" is thought by many to be the song that best symbolizes what Huey Lewis & The News are: A group that loves to make music, entertain their fans, and to have fun doing it.
And of course, you get most of the group's other biggest hits, such as the catchy classic, "Power of Love," the misunderstood "I Want A New Drug," the title track, and the song on which Huey Lewis & The News show their musicianship skills, "Heart & Soul." I say 'most' because this album doesn't quite have ALL the hits. "I Know What I Like," "Doing it All for My Baby," "It's Alright," "Couple Days Off," and "It Hit Me Like A Hammer" were left off. But those omissions aren't as damaging as the ones that were left off of Time Flies are.
If you're a big Huey Lewis & The News fan, don't waste your time and money on Time Flies. Whether you buy it here and now on Amazon or wait patiently for it on eBay, THIS is the single-disc compilation to get if you don't want to shell out the cash for the 3-disc box set.
A great album!.......2004-03-18
If i was to pick out one downfall, it would only be that this does not have "couple of days off" which im not to sure when that song came out? or if it was written by 1992 when this album came out! but apart from that, this album is great!

The Best of the Belgian Band Organ
Manufacturer: Gold 20-Gay 90's Village/Carlsle Music Co. ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000NKIT8W |
Product Description
The stately organ, aka The Emperor, was made in Belgium by Mortier before the turn of the century. This organ at that time it played from a pinned cylinder called a "cob." The cardboard books of music it now plays from are made of a special material from Sweden with flax in it to keep the perforations sharp and clear. Instruments played by this machine include 418 pipes, bass drum, cymbal, snare drum, double castanets and 22 xylophone bars. Its effect is similar to that of a 60 piece orchestra. The following is a list of instruments as they are controlled by the "brain" or keyframe as shown on the original gamut book; madolinne, piston, xiliphon, trommel snare and cast, tremelo, gross caisse, klein fluit, groote fluit, harmonium, violincelle, saxifoon, trombon, voisc humaine fixe, voisc celeste, violon. Every piece of this organ was hand made-even the brass vox humnan pipes were swedged and flared by hand. The ingenious tremelos will produce, with the vox humana, violin, diapason, and melphone, a marvelous sound not unlike the human singing voice. This new Compact Disc collects the best songs and brings them to you remasted from the original master tapes. You won't believe how good these songs sound. You have never heard them like this before. They sound as if your standing right in front of the The Emperor himself.
