The male quartet Portrait tackles another '70s hit, the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love," on its sophomore release, All That Matters. With its strummed acoustic guitar and sensual understatement, the Portrait version reminds one of Babyface's breakthrough single, "When Can I See You." The L.A. foursome applies the same classy singing and seductive romance to the 11 original tunes on the album, but none of them have a melody as attention-grabbing as the Bee Gees' song. Portrait is the vehicle for the talents of Michael "Angelo" Saulsberry, who plays almost all the instruments on the album and who presumably did the bulk of the songwriting and producing, which are credited collectively to Portrait. Saulsberry is a terrific producer, for he has boiled down the '70s sounds of his heroes Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Donny Hathaway to a less cluttered sound which allows lots of breathing space around its sleek, romantic grooves. He is less successful at coming up with memorable melodies and lyrics, and too many of the songs on All That Matters glide along in a feel-good haze without ever landing on a specific hook. Portrait may provide pleasant background music for a date night but the songs never quite force their way into the foreground. --Geoffrey Himes

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Relaxing Project.......2007-06-15

My only other experience with Charlotte Church was seeing part of a PBS special on her, where she sang songs like "Some Enchanted Evening". I actually enjoy her voice on this style of music.

I love her rendition of "Amazing Grace". She also did good on covering "Bridge Over Troubled Water", though I was disappointed she didn't try the high note on the verses as Garfunkel did. My favorite on the project was "It's the Heart That Matters Most".

If I want some beautiful sounding music to relax to while I'm working, this would be a very good project for that.

3 out of 5 stars It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(.......2006-08-20

I'm just shocked that Charlotte has decided to end her classical career with this mediocre assortment of her most loved pieces from her other albums! I wish that she had re-sung all of the pieces to make them sound better than ever with her mature voice! To me, it seems disgusting that anyone would want to end their career with a last album that sounds the way this album does!

Her beginning pieces (Pie Jesu, My Lagan Love, In Trutina, Panis Angelicus, and Amazing Grace) were sung at the beginning of her classical career, and you can hear her flat vowels and shaky low notes. You can also hear it in "She Moved Thru the Fair". It's really annoying!

La Pastorella is a beautiful song to sing, and Church masters it beautifully! Just Wave Hello - the Ford Anthem, is also a beautiful piece, with amazing work from the orchestra.

Ave Maria is a complete annoyance! Church lays on the high notes too much, putting too much emphasis on them, and it's an annoyance! Her vowels are also flat on the high notes - I just hate it!

Dream a Dream is a very nice piece, leaning more towards the pop scene. Church still seems to make it work, and I would listen to it all day!

The Flower Duet is a beautiful song, but Church's vocals are strained, which makes it hard to listen to with a smile on your face! It's still beautiful!

The Prayer (w/ Josh Groban) is a very nice piece, originally sung by Celine Dion. She's still a little bit flat here!

All That Love can Be is sung beautifully, completely smooth and connected. The vocals are flawless and have a mezmerizing effect.

It's the Heart that Knows is a pop piece that Church sings with strong vocals. It's just showing us that she's ending her career as a classical superstar!

Tantum Ergo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Sancta Maria, are all beautiful pieces!

I am a Charlotte Chruch fan, no doubt, but I really didn't like this album! I still wish that she would stay with opera, but I guess dreams don't come true! I wouldn't advise you to buy this CD - but as long as you have Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church (the Self Titled Album) and Enchantment, there's no need for this CD!

Sorry Charlotte!

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte Church.......2006-07-29

Love that voice!! This is a great CD and any one who had not heard this young lady sing should buy it and prepare for some musical enjoyment.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat decent but still mediocre.......2006-06-07

I am well aware of Charlotte's age. However, I am also aware of her amazing vocals and powerful range. But these things don't make you a good singer. Charlotte chose to stick to opera in most of her songs. And face it, not just anyone can do opera.

Charlotte's voice is very well trained - maybe too trained. From a very young age she's been hitting the same notes as Sarah Brightman. But I feel that Charlotte's over-worked and not to mention overdone voice has been declining tremendously.

But I guess none of this really matters now because I haven't heard her do anything classical for a while. If you want to listen to Charlotte now, go find the song 'Crazy Chick.'

If you want to listen to other angel voiced sopranos, I'd go with Sarah Brightman or Renee' Fleming.

2 out of 5 stars R&B For Charlotte .......2006-05-07

If a bird can be annoying as in a Rooster Crowing in the morning, some people will like it. A dog can bark in the nights we sleep, some People will like it. A human voice so light, so vibrated within their own dimensions, people will like it, but not I. I never really saw the beauty of opera, agitating to the ears, just like a Rooster calling on it's hens. With that said, Charlotte needs to turn to Blues Rock or R&B. Yes, Boogie style Blues Rock, she has the voice for it. No matter how many here perceive Opera or know what should sound good, no opera singer could ever sing Blues without a voice and a heart for it. Not One! So why should a girl with soulful music embedded in her, do the same? I say, "it's time to really Rock Charlotte!"

    4 out of 5 stars ??.......2006-09-29

This album kind of confused me. It looks as if Michael Bolton was trying to transform again. But why? It's not like he wasn't selling albums. Maybe the fact that "This Is The Time" was the first time since "The Hunger" not to crack the Top 10 scared him? It's still a good album, though. "The Best Of Love" was a big hit, and "Go The Distance" went to No. 1 and is still my favorite song ever. Not his best at all, but decent nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Bolton you are the best !!!.......2006-08-28

This CD is one of his best. This guy pored his soul into another classic. I love Michael bolton just as much as Luther Vandross (check out my review for him too) Though he is different genre from Luther. Michael is in a class all by himself. The song "Best of Love" gave me the confidence to go after and win back the Love of my life. This whole CD is a must have!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Great...If You Like Him.......2006-05-08

I can recognize that Michael Bolton does what he does very well. He just doesn't appeal to me personally. I like love songs but generally prefer and older style such as from Sinatra or Bennet. More than that, though, his voice is not as smooth to me as many others. That does not stop this from being a good album for those who like him, though.

The mixes are strong and he is definitely able to belt out the songs. I think that even the songs would appeal to many; I liked many of them but didn't like the performance.

Fans should be please. I was underwhelmed.

4 out of 5 stars His Last Successfull Album.......2006-01-18

Released in 1997 this the follow - up to the "One Thing". This CD had two hits on it "Go the Distance" and "The Best of Love".
"A Safe Place From The Storm" is my favorite song on this CD.
I am not A Bolton fan but I bought this CD for one song.

    5 out of 5 stars Umm.... Yeah........2005-10-29

Katielove hit it right on the head. I'm a guy, so I really don't know. But it's a great album nevertheless.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth Is ... be your own truth........2006-01-21

The second album from Mark Weigle found his exploration of gay musicality expanding from his debut. But if you notice the way the two titles string together ("The Truth Is...All That Matters"), it is also easy to capture the essence that his first two discs are very much of a pair.

As a big fan of Mark Weigle's music and having recently been bowled over by the movie "Brokeback Mountain," as the movie played out before me I was frequently struck to what an opportunity was missed by the producer's not utilizing the music from Mark Weigle's CD's in the film. In particular, from Mark's first album, the two song delivery of "The Two Cowboy Waltz" and "One Less Dancer" (a heartbreaking rememberence of a passed-on two-stepper) stuck me as perfect for the movie's theme of tragic love.

But it isn't just for that reason that you should find yourself a few of Mark's univerally decent CD's. His grasp of folk and country pass even most mainstream artists with major label deals. Of course, my main reason for falling in love with the library of Mark's music is the gender identification, after all, there is no way you can misconstrue the message behind "A Good Day" or "John."

If you've been waiting for a gay man that sings gay music without a trace of disco, high-camp or show-tunes, then this is the place to turn. He also made one of my favorite CD's of 2005, the astonishing double disc "SoulSex." They just don't come better than Mark Weigle.

5 out of 5 stars Confident and meaningful..........2004-02-17

Mark Weigle's beautiful voice is such a pleasure in the warm arrangements on this 2000 release. Weigle's a versatile singer, with broad appeal songs like "A Good Day", and some of the best songs ever written for and about the GLBT community. Speaking directly to the listener's heart, the CD's title track is beautiful, painful and ultimately healing. The truth is...well that a lot of the truth of our lives is right here.

4 out of 5 stars gay music seeker from Connecticut.......2000-07-02

Great non-"new wave" music with gay themes, very hard to find.Easy to listen to--singable music, with meaningful lyrics. END

4 out of 5 stars Confident second outing.......2000-05-26

Mark Weigle largely builds on the strengths of his very good first album. I guess this is more of the same to some extent (no bad thing) but growing confidence in his subject matter shows through songs like Good Day, a bouncy, sexy, uplifting pop number that's great to sing along to. The rest is a nice mix of slow romantic stuff, a bit of country, and the upfront queerness that makes Weigle that bit more interesting.

    Album Description

It is evident that worship is a lifestyle for Sheila Walsh in her newest release All That Really Matters: Worship. Drawing upon her Scottish heritage, Sheila launches listeners into a new depth with God as each lyric communicates the grateful and longing heart of one who truly desires to know Him more. From the dramatic anthem of "Jesus All For Jesus" to the gentle worship of "You Are Beautiful," Celtic influenced stylings add a distinct edge to this moving worship album.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another "worship" CD.......2004-08-01

I'm always leery when a singer releases an album of other people's songs. Not to mention that a "worship" fad arose in Christian contemporary music in recent years so that everybody had a "worship" album out. (Makes you wonder what they were doing before.) Had I not heard Sheila Walsh's magnificent voice at a Women of Faith conference, I probably wouldn't have picked this up.

But this CD is more than just repeats of old songs. I'd heard most of them endless times before, but these arrangements -- tastefully simple yet creative -- give them new life. As amazing as her voice is, Sheila Walsh doesn't overembellish, and never comes across as pretentious (like those pop "divas" who like to maul the National Anthem). However, she displays all her talent on the majestic "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" -- get the CD for that song if for nothing else!

This has become my favorite "worship" collection. Despite their familiarity, these songs just don't get old.

4 out of 5 stars Best Sheila CD yet!.......2003-06-19

I just saw Sheila at WOF in Anaheim. This is a great CD, very relaxing and worshipful. It is probably Sheila's best CD yet. If you're thinking about getting it, do it. You won't be sorry. Makes a great gift for anyone.

On the follow up to their triple plantium 1992, Portait continued to turn heads for real music listeners. Although the only features two hit singles which were How Deep Is Your Love and I Can Call You, the album features some nice ballads (which I prefer) check out Hold Me Close, Lay Your Body Down and the interlude Micheal's Mood.

5 out of 5 stars They do it once again.......2005-01-30

Just like the previous CD. This is another one that i listen to all the way through til the end. From front to back of this CD, it is seriously on every song. Offering something a little bit different from the previous one without losing the listener and still keeping everything flowing. It sounds sappy and everything but that is how i feel about this CD. I hope folks out there are still into really good music and recognize that.

If that's the case, then get All That Matters. In the end the music is all that matters.

    5 out of 5 stars Good album.......2002-10-10

A really relaxing album. Overall good. Songs like Much Too Much
and How Deep Is Your Love really did if for me. Worth buying.

    4 out of 5 stars Groovy.......2001-10-02

I found this CD the other night while I was looking through my collection and had to wonder what happened to these guys. On their sophomore set, this foursome blended old school soul sensibilities with mid-90's production values.

The video for the popular song on this CD, "I Can Call You," was in heavy rotation on BET in 1995, but it was not played nearly as much on radio. I like that song because it has a jazzy sound to it, and the four harmonize really well throughout the selection. Plus, I love that thumping bass line.

This CD also has some some good slow jams such as the title cut, and my favorite "Much Too Much." "Loving You is Alright" is a nice midtempo cut. Although I do like their cover of "How Deep Is Your Love," I like their original compositions more. It's not a bad cover, I just don't feel it's worth a rave. On the whole, this is solid group with a grasp of the fundamentals -- lyrics, melody and harmony. It would be a shame if this is the last we'll ever hear from them.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album.......1998-11-14

Portrait's second release is a fine example of what great R&B is all about. A good smattering of both slow love grooves and faster up-tempo movers, this album shakes it up a little bit. However, the characteristic smooth and silky singing of the group stays true and is displayed on every track. The lyrics themselves show thought in the writing. A classy piece from a classy group, this release should not disappoint R&B lovers, especially those fond of suuch artists as Kenny Lattimore, Keith Washinton, or Az Yet. 5 STARS.

    Product Description

With roots sunk deep in the same storytelling tradition of Texas singer/songwriters like Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, Donal Hinely speaks in a voice that is both intimate and authentic. Spinning tales of hard luck, love, missed opportunity and die-hard hope, Hinely writes songs that skirt the outer fringes of country, folk, and straight ahead rock. With help from Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Kim Richey, guitarist Will Kimbrough, ex-Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, and Vanguard recording artist Mindy Smith, Hinely's latest CD We Built a Fire cements his growing reputation as a keen observer of the human condition. We Built a Fire marks the second collaboration with Nashville producer/cellist David Henry whose growing resume includes working with such artists as Cowboy Junkies, Josh Rouse, Vienna Teng, and Guster. Hinely's vocal, guitar, and glass harmonica are joined by a crack band of talented musicians. Chief among these is guitarist Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider, Rodney Crowell) whose signature style has made him one of the most sought after musicians in Nashville. Kimbrough's thick textures and fresh, tasteful riffs animate these songs, complimenting powerful and sometimes haunting imagery. Singer/songwriter Kim Richey lends her distinctive backing vocals on three of the tracks and Nashville stalwart Fats Kaplan chips in on steel guitar, fiddle, and accordion. Vanguard recording artist Mindy Smith also adds backing vocals on three tunes including the standout “These are the Days.” Hinely himself pushes the envelope for fans of the glass harmonica by using the instrument in some new and interesting ways on the title track and on the songs "Drunkard Moon" and "Easier." Since its release in 2003, We Built a Fire has earned critical praise from both independent and mainstream press landing on several top ten lists in the Americana genre. The Indie Acoustic Project, a review of all independent releases, named We Built a Fire second only to Rodney Crowell's Houston Kid in 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Honesty and Artistry .......2005-05-13

A fantastic album. We had to have at least two copies because my husband and I kept fighting over who got to keep it handiest..Donal's lyrical voice and guitar playing set these songs on fire - all original works, written with an honesty and integrity hard to find these days. Excellent!

    4 out of 5 stars A sample of left-coast punk.......2001-02-14

This is a pretty solid compilation of California skate-punk songs, occasionally drifting toward ska or harder punk. All songs are very catchy and interesting... highlights include Serial Carpens, Longfellow, Straight Edge Crack Whores, and Five State Drive, but it's hard to single out any songs as obviously better than the others. Which songs you like from this CD will depend mostly on how you prefer your punk rock. This assumes, of course, that you don't mind some occasional weirdness in the recordings - most of these bands here are unsigned, and the label itself is very small (pretty much run out of some guy's garage), so there's something about the sound quality on a few of the tracks that's a little off from what you might be used to hearing on CDs. But listen to all the songs, broaden your punk horizons; all the music here is worth your time. Another thing: this is a benefit CD for the American Cancer Society. Part of the proceeds from each sale goes to help fight cancer... so if you're one of those anti-cancer people, that's one more thing you can enjoy about this CD.
