The male quartet Portrait tackles another '70s hit, the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love," on its sophomore release, All That Matters. With its strummed acoustic guitar and sensual understatement, the Portrait version reminds one of Babyface's breakthrough single, "When Can I See You." The L.A. foursome applies the same classy singing and seductive romance to the 11 original tunes on the album, but none of them have a melody as attention-grabbing as the Bee Gees' song. Portrait is the vehicle for the talents of Michael "Angelo" Saulsberry, who plays almost all the instruments on the album and who presumably did the bulk of the songwriting and producing, which are credited collectively to Portrait. Saulsberry is a terrific producer, for he has boiled down the '70s sounds of his heroes Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Donny Hathaway to a less cluttered sound which allows lots of breathing space around its sleek, romantic grooves. He is less successful at coming up with memorable melodies and lyrics, and too many of the songs on All That Matters glide along in a feel-good haze without ever landing on a specific hook. Portrait may provide pleasant background music for a date night but the songs never quite force their way into the foreground. --Geoffrey Himes

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
A Beautiful, Relaxing Project.......2007-06-15
I love her rendition of "Amazing Grace". She also did good on covering "Bridge Over Troubled Water", though I was disappointed she didn't try the high note on the verses as Garfunkel did. My favorite on the project was "It's the Heart That Matters Most".
If I want some beautiful sounding music to relax to while I'm working, this would be a very good project for that.
It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(.......2006-08-20
Her beginning pieces (Pie Jesu, My Lagan Love, In Trutina, Panis Angelicus, and Amazing Grace) were sung at the beginning of her classical career, and you can hear her flat vowels and shaky low notes. You can also hear it in "She Moved Thru the Fair". It's really annoying!
La Pastorella is a beautiful song to sing, and Church masters it beautifully! Just Wave Hello - the Ford Anthem, is also a beautiful piece, with amazing work from the orchestra.
Ave Maria is a complete annoyance! Church lays on the high notes too much, putting too much emphasis on them, and it's an annoyance! Her vowels are also flat on the high notes - I just hate it!
Dream a Dream is a very nice piece, leaning more towards the pop scene. Church still seems to make it work, and I would listen to it all day!
The Flower Duet is a beautiful song, but Church's vocals are strained, which makes it hard to listen to with a smile on your face! It's still beautiful!
The Prayer (w/ Josh Groban) is a very nice piece, originally sung by Celine Dion. She's still a little bit flat here!
All That Love can Be is sung beautifully, completely smooth and connected. The vocals are flawless and have a mezmerizing effect.
It's the Heart that Knows is a pop piece that Church sings with strong vocals. It's just showing us that she's ending her career as a classical superstar!
Tantum Ergo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Sancta Maria, are all beautiful pieces!
I am a Charlotte Chruch fan, no doubt, but I really didn't like this album! I still wish that she would stay with opera, but I guess dreams don't come true! I wouldn't advise you to buy this CD - but as long as you have Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church (the Self Titled Album) and Enchantment, there's no need for this CD!
Sorry Charlotte!

Somewhat decent but still mediocre.......2006-06-07
Charlotte's voice is very well trained - maybe too trained. From a very young age she's been hitting the same notes as Sarah Brightman. But I feel that Charlotte's over-worked and not to mention overdone voice has been declining tremendously.
But I guess none of this really matters now because I haven't heard her do anything classical for a while. If you want to listen to Charlotte now, go find the song 'Crazy Chick.'
If you want to listen to other angel voiced sopranos, I'd go with Sarah Brightman or Renee' Fleming.

The Truth Is ... be your own truth........2006-01-21
As a big fan of Mark Weigle's music and having recently been bowled over by the movie "Brokeback Mountain," as the movie played out before me I was frequently struck to what an opportunity was missed by the producer's not utilizing the music from Mark Weigle's CD's in the film. In particular, from Mark's first album, the two song delivery of "The Two Cowboy Waltz" and "One Less Dancer" (a heartbreaking rememberence of a passed-on two-stepper) stuck me as perfect for the movie's theme of tragic love.
But it isn't just for that reason that you should find yourself a few of Mark's univerally decent CD's. His grasp of folk and country pass even most mainstream artists with major label deals. Of course, my main reason for falling in love with the library of Mark's music is the gender identification, after all, there is no way you can misconstrue the message behind "A Good Day" or "John."
If you've been waiting for a gay man that sings gay music without a trace of disco, high-camp or show-tunes, then this is the place to turn. He also made one of my favorite CD's of 2005, the astonishing double disc "SoulSex." They just don't come better than Mark Weigle.

Album Description
It is evident that worship is a lifestyle for Sheila Walsh in her newest release All That Really Matters: Worship. Drawing upon her Scottish heritage, Sheila launches listeners into a new depth with God as each lyric communicates the grateful and longing heart of one who truly desires to know Him more. From the dramatic anthem of "Jesus All For Jesus" to the gentle worship of "You Are Beautiful," Celtic influenced stylings add a distinct edge to this moving worship album.Customer Reviews:
Not just another "worship" CD.......2004-08-01
But this CD is more than just repeats of old songs. I'd heard most of them endless times before, but these arrangements -- tastefully simple yet creative -- give them new life. As amazing as her voice is, Sheila Walsh doesn't overembellish, and never comes across as pretentious (like those pop "divas" who like to maul the National Anthem). However, she displays all her talent on the majestic "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" -- get the CD for that song if for nothing else!
This has become my favorite "worship" collection. Despite their familiarity, these songs just don't get old.
Best Sheila CD yet!.......2003-06-19

If that's the case, then get All That Matters. In the end the music is all that matters.
Good album.......2002-10-10
and How Deep Is Your Love really did if for me. Worth buying.
Groovy.......2001-10-02
The video for the popular song on this CD, "I Can Call You," was in heavy rotation on BET in 1995, but it was not played nearly as much on radio. I like that song because it has a jazzy sound to it, and the four harmonize really well throughout the selection. Plus, I love that thumping bass line.
This CD also has some some good slow jams such as the title cut, and my favorite "Much Too Much." "Loving You is Alright" is a nice midtempo cut. Although I do like their cover of "How Deep Is Your Love," I like their original compositions more. It's not a bad cover, I just don't feel it's worth a rave. On the whole, this is solid group with a grasp of the fundamentals -- lyrics, melody and harmony. It would be a shame if this is the last we'll ever hear from them.
Fantastic album.......1998-11-14

Product Description
With roots sunk deep in the same storytelling tradition of Texas singer/songwriters like Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, Donal Hinely speaks in a voice that is both intimate and authentic. Spinning tales of hard luck, love, missed opportunity and die-hard hope, Hinely writes songs that skirt the outer fringes of country, folk, and straight ahead rock. With help from Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Kim Richey, guitarist Will Kimbrough, ex-Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, and Vanguard recording artist Mindy Smith, Hinely's latest CD We Built a Fire cements his growing reputation as a keen observer of the human condition. We Built a Fire marks the second collaboration with Nashville producer/cellist David Henry whose growing resume includes working with such artists as Cowboy Junkies, Josh Rouse, Vienna Teng, and Guster. Hinely's vocal, guitar, and glass harmonica are joined by a crack band of talented musicians. Chief among these is guitarist Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider, Rodney Crowell) whose signature style has made him one of the most sought after musicians in Nashville. Kimbrough's thick textures and fresh, tasteful riffs animate these songs, complimenting powerful and sometimes haunting imagery. Singer/songwriter Kim Richey lends her distinctive backing vocals on three of the tracks and Nashville stalwart Fats Kaplan chips in on steel guitar, fiddle, and accordion. Vanguard recording artist Mindy Smith also adds backing vocals on three tunes including the standout These are the Days. Hinely himself pushes the envelope for fans of the glass harmonica by using the instrument in some new and interesting ways on the title track and on the songs "Drunkard Moon" and "Easier." Since its release in 2003, We Built a Fire has earned critical praise from both independent and mainstream press landing on several top ten lists in the Americana genre. The Indie Acoustic Project, a review of all independent releases, named We Built a Fire second only to Rodney Crowell's Houston Kid in 2003.Customer Reviews:
