A Love Supreme is a suite about redemption, a work of pure spirit and song, that encapsulates all the struggles and aspirations of the 1960s. Following hard on the heels of the lyrical, swinging Crescent, A Love Supreme heralded Coltrane's search for spiritual and musical freedom, as expressed through polyrhythms, modalities, and purely vertical forms that seemed strange to some jazz purists, but which captivated more adventurous listeners (and rock fellow travelers such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, and the Byrds), while initiating a series of volatile, unruly prayer offerings, including Kulu Su Mama, Ascension, Om, Meditations, Expression, Interstellar Space. From the urgent speech-like timbre of his tenor, to the serpentine textures and earthy groove of Elvin Jones's drumming, Coltrane's suite proceeds with escalating intensity, conveying a hard-fought wisdom and a beckoning serenity in the prayer-like drones of "Psalm," where Jones rolls and rumbles like thunder as Garrison and Tyner toll away suggestively--all the while Coltrane searches for that one climactic note worthy of the love he wants to share. --Chip Stern

5 out of 5 stars One of Coltrane's greatest masterpieces.......2007-07-29

When John Coltrane recorded this album in 1964, he intended it to be a tribte to God; the record is an epic four-part suite, with each of its sections representing a stage in the struggle for spiritual unity with the supreme being. The music is full of passion and power, bulging with internal conflict and meditative grace. 'Trane's playing here is incredible- it's as lyrical as anything Miles Davis ever did, a virtuoso display of emotional resonance and controlled chaos. The rest of the players aren't so shabby themselves: The rhythm section of bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones lend the proceedings a surging, driving intensity, while pianist McCoy Tyner radiates angelic slabs of pure melody.

Just listen to the band moving through those four sections! "Acknowledgement" wastes no time in setting the tone for the rest of the suite. It's a mini-masterpiece in and of itself, boiling over with passion and intensity. There's pain in Coltrane's playing, but there's also hope and power- he shoots forth whirlwinds of pure, goreous sound, filling the room with pure electricified magic. "Resolution" builds on the template set by "Acknowledgement," which sees the band improvising on a rugged, bluesy theme. This section has an almost film-noir feel to it, thanks to the heavy tension in Coltrane's playing. Next up is the harrowing "Pursuance," which features a volcanic drum solo from Jones. The heavenly, meditative "Psalm" is an ideal conlusion to the record.

Simply put, this is one of the greatest albums (jazz or otherwise) ever recorded. No collection is complete without it.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-06-26

There is nothing I can add to what has already been said about this recording. Simply amazing and will always withstand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Coltrane does it again!.......2007-06-11

This is one of the top 5 albums of all time. Coltrane is on fire, McCoy is on fire, Jimmy Garrison is on fire, and Elvin is murderous. Out of all of tunes, my fav is Pursuance. It's passionate, has a hard bopish-avantgarde feel and yet it still swings. Out of the park!

4 out of 5 stars Rookie Coltrane Listener.......2007-05-26

For years my very good friend who prides himself on being a music aficionado and "snob", much like Jack Black's character in High Fidelity, has been raving about John Coltrane and a "Love Supreme". I however, have been firmly encamped in the classic rock, blues and pop of the 50's, 60's & 70's. I always felt the jazz style that Coltrane and others of that genre played, was way above my head. Though I appreciated the musicianship to the degree I could, I didn't particularly care for it. I didn't "get it".

But now as I reach the half-way point in my fifties, I wanted to force my self to listen and try to see just what it is about Coltrane that so many folks find extrodinary. So my friend recommended A Love Supreme. I listened and listened and virtually immersed my self in the recording until passages became familiar. Now I have a glimmer, an embryonic appreciation of the man's gift. I put it on for my 17 year old daughter and she loves it! It grows on you and I think maybe for the first time I'm experiencing what that type of jazz can do for you. Live & learn!

5 out of 5 stars Deeply moving..........2007-04-20

This is a deeply spiritual album. It never ceases to move me in some way everytime I hear it. It feels so real and authentic that if you're not careful, you may shed a tear of joy or two. It's just one long suite, made by Coltrane after he kicked his heroin habit and found his soul and God again. It's not often one describes a jazz album as moving (Miles's Sketches of Spain is the only one who comes to mind), but there's really no other way to describe this wonderful, transcendent, beguiling album.

A string quartet rendering of "A Love Supreme"? Even as John Coltrane's beloved work gets revived in various formats--Branford Marsalis performed and recorded with his quartet, Wynton Marsalis with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and singer Kurt Elling set a section of it to words--it may seem a stretch as a classical crossover. But unlike the Kronos Quartet, which came a cropper with its unswinging treatments of Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk, the Turtle Island Quartet is steeped in a jazz sensibility. While the enveloping spiritual intensity of "A Love Supreme" may elude it, the San Francisco-based group grabs the listener with its dark undertones, probing lines, rough hewn textures and airy counter melodies. Of the other Coltrane classics included on the CD, the ballad "Naima" stands out with its gorgeous blend of tones and colors and "Countdown" is given a brisk, percussive workout. Jazz fans will find new pathways into "A Love Supreme" while the classical set will find a gateway to one of jazz's enduring achievements. --Lloyd Sachs

5 out of 5 stars Another Wu banger.......2006-11-18

To do a very long review on this album I'll be beatin' on a dead horse. All the other reviewers hit the major points. Lyrically this may be the best of Ghost's albums. The features help out alot to. I can't really point out any specific tracks. This whole album is good. beats and lyrics. Get this if you don't got it.

5 out of 5 stars Ghostface Killah - Surpeme Clientele.......2006-11-13

Four long years after his classic debut, Ghostface Killah returns with his sophomore effort, "Supreme Clientele" in 2000. Ghost is arguably one of the top lyrically skilled rappers in the Wu-Tang Clan and he proved that on his debut and on both Wu-Tang albums, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" and "Wu-Tang Forever." But it's rarely seen that a rapper can always be consistent and they at least put out one or more weak albums in their career, so will Ghostface suffer from the sophomore jinx or will he dominate another album with the raw production and his crazy lyrical ability?

Ghostface does it once again! Another great album from one of the Wu-Tangs elite! He lyrically murders almost every track not to mention the production is top notch on all but a few of them as well. Ghostface is a very skilled and consistent rapper up to this point, if your're a fan of raw New York hip hop, then definitely check this banger out!

5 out of 5 stars (Rating: 9 out of 10): Wu's Lifesaver Back In '99/2000.......2006-09-19

1999, The Wu was in a huge slump. A lot of sub medicore records were being released to aim at commercial status, but failed miserably. In early 2000, Ghostface Killah releases his second album "Supreme Clientele" with wrath of fury, creating good result, and possibly saved the Wu Tang Clan from falling off.

When has Ghostface Killah dissapoint lyrically? Never. Songs like "One" and "Appolo Kids" shows that his lyrics are on point through out this album. What I like about his rhyme style (unlike everyone else from the Wu except The Genius) is that he stays consistant, but at the same time, never overshadows himself, like on the song "Ghost Deni". The guests do a good job on this album also. Two of my favorite songs here are "Buck 50" with Method Man, Redman, and Cappadonna; as well as the Wu posse track "Wu Banga 101" with GZA, Rae, Cappadonna, and Masta Killah. They all go a good job on the songs, but Ghostface doesn't allow them to outshine him (by spitting two verses in each song, while everybody else gets one). Also he introduces his new group TMF (now called Theodore Unit) with good friend Trife (Da God) on a few tracks.

Many short songs on this album and pointless skits (such as "Who Would You F***") is the only reason why this album doesn't get a 10. But 21 tracks deep and many up banging songs, this album doesn't fail (unlike many Wu albums released in '99/2000 era). Basically Ghostface brought back life into Wu's dying legacy on this album at that time. I recommend this to Wu fans who want to hear a late 90's version of how they were rhyming back in the early days. It's highly enjoyable.

You cant debate the best solo Wu album with out this classic set of songs not being brought up. RZA and Ghostface go together like penutbutter and jam, brothers from another mother you could say. Thats who produced most of it. Thats not the only chemicals that go good together on this brillant cd, there is not a waist of a guest verse, whith cameos from GZA, Redman, Methodman, Masta killa, Capppadonna,RZA, Reakwon, Superb, U-God, and 60 Second Assassin, they all hold there own. For the old school sounding Wu bangers check out The Grain, Wu Banga 101, and Buck 50. For a up beat feel check out One, Cherchez Laghost, and Childs Play. For some super lyrics check out Mighty Helthy, Ghost Deini, and Apollo Kids. There some thing for every one, unless you listen to The Black Eye peas or some crap like that. There's even a 50 Cent diss(Clyde Smith). One bad thing about this set of songs is the one they left out becouse the sample could not get cleared, download The Gutar. Supreme Cliental is like a more evolved Sounding Iron Man disk, so buy it.

It's reported that Supreme Beings of Leisure emerged when a rap group called Oversoul 7 added a singer named Geri Soriano-Lightwood. Yet the band's laid-back dance grooves sound all of a piece, as if they'd played together for years. There's no messy merging of disparate styles, no rude sound shifts that occur when young bands search for their sound. Instead, this is a professionally buffed production. Though the three instrumental members all share programming duties and the music is certainly heightened by a liberal use of special space-age effects, the music is far more rooted in traditional soul-ballad and pop-rock writing than apparent on first listen. Tracks such as "Golddigger" and "Strangelove Addiction" borrow their hooks from the pop-rock dictionary, no matter how futuristic the desires. It might be another case of style over substance. Or maybe the band needs to transcend their professionalism and really get down to some scary stuff. --Rob O'Connor

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Supremely Excellent.......2007-07-30

This CD is one of my all-time faves. In fact, Track 3 ("Last Girl on Earth") was my theme song in 2004. The album art is exactly what this CD is about: too cool for school, absolutely fab and groovy. Lounge meets electronica for a perfect 10.

4 out of 5 stars Better the second time around.......2007-01-10

Sometimes music doesn't grab you the first go around or other musical tastes are more interesting at the time and a disc gets displaced from your rotation. Such was the case with this disc. I lost it and didn't redicover it for years and since then I have been enjoying these cool sounds that are part 60's r&b, part stylish-pop for a refreshing synthesis of trip-hop creation; it is James Bond meets Austin Powers on a grey blue urban landscape while Shirley Bassy's voice breaks through the chilly air. The atmospheric effects and programming coupled with the fusion of sitar and guitars is a nice space age goes retro result. Very cool songs include "Strangelove Addiction" that has a pop-trip-hop goes to the disco groove,"You're always the Sun" that has quirky beats set to the smooth vocals of Geri Soriano-Lightwood and the catchy, "Golddigger," that is pure soul at the club circa 1960 fastforward to 2007.A good disc to discover again the second time around or for the very first time. This is mellow yet strightforward trip-hop British soul for your senses.

5 out of 5 stars This is how the cool cat 60s should have sounded.......2007-01-01

Taking the lounge style music of mid to late 60s and making it better than it ever hoped to be: Of the 30 second sound tracks from the album Amazon has listen to "Golddigger", "Last Girl On Earth", "Nothin' Like Tomorrow", and "Under The Gun" to get a real sense of what this album is delivering. The lyrics match the style of music perfectly, the female lead voice is smooth, the music is creative electronic tinge lounge and dancefloor; the whole package is right on target. This is one of the few albums that when I copied it to my iPod I left every track in. Very Cool, with a capital C.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous!.......2006-02-26

If life were fair, this band's song "Gold Digger" would be right at the top of the charts, and even more popular than Kanye West's song of the same name.

There isn't a lame song on here, which is something that you can't say for many albums these days. Simply the best!

5 out of 5 stars The best CD i've ever heard!!!.......2005-07-22

When I first heard "Gold Digger" and "Under The Gun" on Dish Network's EuroStyle station back in 2000, I instantly fell in love with Supreme Beings of Leisure. Luckily a friend and I went to a Borders book store in St. Louis, and they had 2 copies of this CD. I wasn't disapointed, in fact, this is now my favorite CD, topping even Nirvana's classic "Nevermind".

Geri has silky smooth vocals that fit perfectly with the synth. Sexy, sultry, and smooth describes Supreme Beings of Leisure, and NEVER boring. I've heard there 2nd CD "DoS" and its not nearly as good as there 1st. I'm hoping their 3rd upcoming CD sounds more like this one (the first).

    5 out of 5 stars A Love Supreme, Supreme.......2007-01-04

I did not know it was possible to improve on this masterpiece but it has been done! Everything about this edition is even more beautiful than the first. The extra CD with the different takes are as mind blowing as the original. I wasn't as crazy over the live version as I was over the alternate takes of the other parts of the suite.

What is there for me to explain about the music that hasn't been explained? Other than that this is the best spiritual experience I get from listening to music.

The packaging is one of the most beautiful design jobs I have seen in a CD set. The booklet artwork is amazing, the mostly black and high contrast colors for everythig else like the CDs and inside covers are perfectly designed . The design is in perfect balance visually. Top it off with the beautiful plastic jacket sleeve, this was an awesome edition of the masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars How many stars should be enough? The Trane Quartet may have them all.......2006-01-25

It is difficult to listen to this sublime and indefinable work without shedding tears of joy and wonderment. It is one of the greatest metaphysical revelations through music in the XXth century: this was indeed Coltrane's purpose, and he achieved it in his unique and inestimable way.

Since A Love Supreme is indefinable, it is also `uncommentable'. It deserves not the praise or punctuation of critical eyes, and perhaps not the ecstasy applaud of audiences: our praise and awe, and reverence and love present themselves above all else in the form of silence; and this suffices.

    5 out of 5 stars A 20th Century landmark.......2006-01-03

One of the 20th century's greatest and most important works got better in this edition. The highs are crisper, the articulations clearer, and the lows more distinct than either the LP or earler CDs.

That said, I think the ancillary material (on disc 2), while interesting for JC fans, provides little improvement on the studio version. The live version from France (Summer '65) is unfocussed, ragged, and sounds like they're trying to find a groove (and never do) throughout the performance. While it pressage's John's "free form" period, this doesn't serve the piece well. Second, the 2 sextette cuts may be historically interestng, but the sound quality is poor and the playing sounds crowded.

The 2 alternate takes are not really alternates as they so closely match the final version.

Should you buy this CD? Yes, for the quality of the reissued studio version, but not for the additional material.

5 out of 5 stars A Love Supreme for John Coltrane.......2005-12-28

I don't care what kind of music you predominantly listen to, you have to experience this CD. You may not "get it" with your first listen. I know that I didn't. But I kept playing it. I kept myself open. And then one day something imploded within me. My soul? My spirit? I don't know, but there was now a new hole in me that was filled with nothing less than the Holiness of John Coltrane's Wondrous Hymn to the Divine.

This isn't music...it really isn't. Music is something you can dance to, or hum along with, or maybe make you want to break out in song. This is a meditation...a devotion to the God of All Creation. I don't care what your personal beliefs are. This CD transcends creed, race, belief. It moves through all without judgment. It is the sound of Grace and it belongs to the universe. It is the OM vibration moving Its Impersonal Self into and through the personal self. It is the "I" of God presenting Itself as Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance, and Psalm.

Coltrane and his collaborators do not play the instruments...they are the instruments through which the Divine plays through them. It is simply a breathtaking recording that will never leave you the same ever! You won't put this on for background music. You won't be doing the laundry or reading the paper. You'll be sitting in your room with the lights off, a few candles lit, maybe a stick of incense burning and you will BEcome the message and the message will BEcome you.

May we all be split wide open and may Love Supreme enter into and through our collective dream of what we are and who we may become.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Package.......2005-04-12

Not only does this set have wonderful remastered sound and the inclusion of the French performance to its name, as many reviewers have noted, but also studio takes of various movements played by an expanded ensemble, which are interesting bonuses.

Regarding the sound quality, let's begin with that of the main course, the original 1964 studio take of A Love Supreme. Balance is improved a little, and all the instruments sound fuller and truer. They've really polished a gem here, considering the original sound (as with any Impulse! recording) was good to begin with. Of course one couldn't expect any less with Blue Note's engineering maestro Rudy van Gelder at the helm. And as far as the sound of the live performance goes, the bass and piano sometimes get a little too far back for comfort, but even then they are still audible, so there is no real complaint about the recording quality of the live recording.

As for the live performance's playing - some of this stuff is off the hook. Listen to Elvin Jones crash into a fury in the opening of Pursuance, and Jimmy Garrison's bass solo in the middle of the same movement. That bass solo in particular will rip the hair off your head. Garrison plays the lumbering instrument like a flamenco guitar: something I've never heard quite matched. And of course Coltrane and Tyner reach for the heights themselves, as always, though it is the achievements of Elvin and Garrison that are important here, as they were seldom if ever given this much solo time in the studio.

As I've said, there's nothing wrong with the studio bonus takes. Shepp and Co. handle the material well, and their contributions are an interesting view on a long-beloved masterwork.

In short, if you are even remotely familiar with A Love Supreme and haven't clawed for a copy of this deluxe edition yet, your life is a shame.

5 out of 5 stars Chante is AMAZING!!!.......2007-04-14

Her voice hypnotizes. The sultry sound of her voice makes you forget every problem you may have. This is a replacement because my Chante collection mysteriously came up missing. Please check out her duets with Keith Washington (I Love You) and one with Kenny Latimore (When I say I do) actually got married off those two. Don't forget "I Cry to Myself" from This Moment is Mine CD.....priceless. The list goes on so I will spare you. Check her out!

    5 out of 5 stars CD review.......2007-03-10

This is a replacement for many CD's that were stolen from my car. I love Chante as her voice is classic. I have grown to love her music more as it is hard to find singers like her now.

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2006-12-23

Terrific to see so many reviews on Chante's older works! I agree with the majority of them too - she's a tremendous artist and was a underrated. I'm not too sure why - maybe because she had such a bold approach and wasn't really into the main-stream pressure in her works. But at least the tunes are still out there and of all of her works that I've checked out, this is to me her best along with "Precious". Only this one steps out a little bit and delivers on the potential shown in Precious... heck, dating myself, but I was pretty young when this came out, and I remember how pumped I was in the record store when I saw it.

The direction for this album's on display from the beginning. "Searchin' "is a spoken word cut with a heavy beat and roll to it. But then "This Time" follows up, and it's loaded with funk & soul. An amazing blend of musical styles is on display here - along with very creative lyrical patters. All of it is delightful enough! "I'm What You Need" was another standout to me with a smoother flow while I also enjoyed her rendition of the old classic "Free". "Mood" has a kickin' attitude to it, and "Thank You for Loving Me" also had a larger than life build to it also. But "Am I Losing You" was easily one of the bigger stand-outs, thanks to it's simplicity and pure emotion in the song. She and her artists did a fantastic job of capturing the mood in the song, in my opinion.

I enjoyed this one. I don't think it was totally without fault, and not all the songs grabbed me. I also think what may have made this more of an absolute stunner would have been if more subtle, live instruments were used... I just think that sometimes they add even more class, life and longevity to the music. Chante Moore never really got all of the credit she deserved, and this really was an album that was sort of ahead of it's time to me. She blended different elements from different elemental styles here - it's something that artists have done before but it's something that a lot of neo-soul artists are heavy into doing right now (take Khari Simmons/Jiva, for example, or The Rebirth, or Break Reform). Ever since the duet she did with El Debarge a year (maybe more) before her first album, you knew she'd be special. Here's to hoping that she returns to this type of bold approach to the music.

5 out of 5 stars This was the first tape I bought when I finsh basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky.......2006-01-21

Of course that was back in '95. Out of all of her CD this is her best work. There is not a bad song on this CD. Ol Skool loving still gets played several times in a row on my CD player. Grab this one before its out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Moore, moore, moore, bring us more of this "Love Supreme"!.......2005-08-18

Man, I love this! Smooth, beautiful soul with deep rythm. Talk about 90's R&B at it's best! Glad to see a few other reviews of Chante's, I thought I was one of very few Chante Moore fans.

"Searchin'", "This Time", "I'm What You Need", "Old School Lovin'", "Free/Sail On" and "Am I Losing You" show the diversity and co-song writing abilities in this underrated, talented r&b queen! This type of diversity is lacking in Mariah, Whitney, Christina and any other top vocalists today.

Her voice isn't hugely powerful, she's "moore" like a Diana Ross with lungs with a tinge of Shanice/Mariah (refering to the whistle tone which she doesn't over use in any shape, manner or form). Her range takes us from sweet (as in Free/Sail On), heavenly (as in "Without Your Love"), sexy/sultry ("I'm What You Need", "Old School Lovin'", "Searchin'"), sad ("Am I Losing You") to gospel ("I Want To Thank You", "Thou Shalt Not") and fun ("Mood"-almost sounds like Janet Jackson, "Thank You For Lovin' Me").

I'm not totally sure of her involvement in the actual writing of the lyrics but they are romatically brilliant and I wouldn't be surprised if the lyrics were her's and the co-writing by Law, Hamblim, Hall, etc., was mainly in the music.

This is a classic 90's r&b that was underrated and talent mostly unrecognized. Too bad because we need "moore" of this type of talent today.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars La Stupenda at her best.......2007-05-06

This 2 CD set is entitled "La Stupenda," which creates extremely high expectations. Joan Sutherland meets those expectations on this CD; she is, indeed, "La Stupenda." One of the interesting aspects of this set is Dame Joan's singing some non operatic works (such as "Home Sweet Home" or "Where Are the Songs We Sung?" or "Falling in Love with Love"). In the end, this is a wonderful compilation of the art of Joan Sutherland.

First, let's consider a sampling of the cuts on these CDs.

"O Zittre Nicht" is from Mozart's "Magic Flute" and it is a challenge to sopranos, with its series of staccato high notes. Sutherland essays this well. There are some nice trills; she hits the high notes well. The series of (treacherous) high notes toward the end is handled very nicely by Sutherland. In short, she scintillates, with a closing high note well hit.

From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," she sings "O luce di questi'anima." Her voice and technique are well suited for Donizetti (and Bellini). The cantabile is smoothly sung. The cabaletta is rollicking. Her coloratura technique is on target; the ornamentation is compelling. There are trills, runs, high notes and other ornamentation well done. The close is nice (although there may be a bit of a scoop on the final high note).

From "Beatrice di Tenda" (by Bellini), we hear ""Eccomi pronta. . .Deh, se un'urna." The cantabile is sung well. She hits notes clearly. The spirited cabaletta follows. Sutherland exhibits somewhat less ornamentation than usual, but trills are well done and, overall, the piece is nicely sung. The close features clean high notes.

"Home Sweet Home." This kind of illustrates Joan Sutherland's work nicely. I can hardly make out the words (and it is sung in English). But it is an interesting version. She sings the song straight, without overpowering the song with operatic technique (an occasional trill actually works out well).

Elsewhere, I have commented on her 1959 version of the "Mad Scene" from "Lucia di Lammermoor" (from her album "The Greatest Hits").

"Falling in Love with Love" is an interesting cut. This is a classic Rodgers and Hart song. Sutherland sings it pretty well, and one can pick up the words cleanly. However, one might compare this with Anna Moffo's version, which is more musical. Sutherland's version is a bit too operatic for what the song is about.

Finally, "Ah non giunge" from Bellini's "La Sonnambula," a great coloratura tune! This is taken at a sprightly pace. Sutherland exhibits good coloratura technique. There is nice ornamentation. She precisely nails high notes. In the repeat, the florid singing ramps up. This is a compelling version, with series of staccato high notes to close the work out.

Thus, this 2 CD set is a welcome entrée to the body of work of Dame Joan Sutherland. Sometimes (as with "Home Sweet Home") one has a hard time picking out the words. But with Sutherland, the skills and techniques create a compelling oeuvre that is well worth attending to.

5 out of 5 stars this is the one to buy.......2007-04-18

I'm not an opera expert I just enjoy it. La Stupenda has the best of Joan Sutherland in a two CD set and it's amazing. She looked like a nice, quiet housewife but an indescribalbe voice. Her aria from Norma gave me chills and her version of "I Dreamed I Dwelt in Marble Halls" is flat out one of the prettiest things I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars La Stupenda lives up to her name.......2006-11-12

Joan Sutherland was undeniably one of the greatest operatic sopranos of the 20th century. This comprehensive two-CD retrospective of her long career will delight her many fans, and serve as a fitting introduction for those unfamiliar with her artistry. The two CDs span a period of nearly thirty years, from 1959 to 1988, with the majority of the 27 tracks recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when her voice was at its' astounding best. Sutherland was renowned first and foremost as a dramatic coloratura, and her supple technique is brilliantly illustrated in selections such as the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor; Doll Song from The Tales of Hoffmann; Queen of the Night aria from The Magic Flute; and the seldom-performed Concerto for Coloratura Soprano by Gliere. As her career progressed, her voice became larger and more powerful, as demonstrated by the Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and In Questa Reggia from Puccini's Turandot. Lastly, Sutherland was a diva who was not afraid to let her hair down once in a while, and we are treated to lighter selections such as Where are the songs we sung? by Noel Coward, and Falling in love with love, by Rogers and Hart. Highly recommended for all lovers of great singing.

5 out of 5 stars La Stupenda, Amore, amore, amore.......2006-01-28

I adore this woman's voice. And I love this cd. I was really happy to find an aria of "Esclarmonde" which is virtually impossible to find as well as some of the more lesser known works of hers such as Mozart's Queen of Night, although I wish she had done a recording of the revenge aria (Der Holle Roche) The whole cd was wonderful to hear but if I had to make on complaint it's that I didn't buy her Isolde's Liebestod but the woman can sing Lucia better than just about anyone so I'll forgive her for not sticking with the Wagner. In fact I am thrilled that she chose Lucia over Isolde because frankly acting and interperation was never her strong suit, it was the pure beauty of her voice. It's always a grand pleasure to listen to Joan kick butt in any coloratura arias but of course she set the bar so high that there is yet a coloratura since her that can do those arias half as well. She has spoiled me for life and that's why she is La Stupenda.

5 out of 5 stars La Stupenda - well deserved title for Joan.......2006-01-12

I am not an opera expert by any stretch of the imagination - but I love opera. I love the expertise and beautiful voices of these hardworking singers. When I first heard Joan sing, it was from a recording she made late in her career and I honestly thought, what's the big deal about her? So, I decided to get The Art of Prima Donna album, and all I have to say is WOW! In her prime, this woman was a fantastic singer! While she wasn't the dramatist like Callas was (I also love Callas), her range and the way she hit each note so precisely was amazing! So, I bought La Stupenda. I loved the piece she did from Handel's Alcia and the fantastic Rossini duet she did with Marilyn Horn. The entire album is wonderful. I particularly like how Joan's high notes are never screechy - she makes those high notes sound so effortless. I also appreciate how she had such control over her vibrato - not too trilly (I like trilly - especially by Beverly Sills - however, not every song should be all trill). Finally, I think that Joan was one of the few sopranos that didn't try to drown everyone out. When she sang a duet, she blended with the other singer - how rare! Not all singers seem to be able to accomplish that - duets shouldn't be a competition. This album is worth every penny. Joan was one of the great singers of the 20th century and she deserves her title of La Stupenda!

    Album Details

Arguably the best singer of the Supremes, the late Florence Ballard's talents were eclipsed by someone else in the group. This collection takes her to the forefront on all the tracks that show she could have been something a lot bigger than most would give her credit for in her time.

3 out of 5 stars The Original Dreamgirl.......2007-03-29

The Supreme Florence Ballard: 18 Essential Original Recordings, is 14 tracks from the 1968 recording sessions with ABC Records for a scheduled album, with the working title, You Don't Have To, with selections 15-18 - Buttered Popcorn, Ain't That Good News, Hey Baby & Heavenly Father - featuring Ballard as lead vocalist for the Supremes.

The way the collection is put together is dubious at best, since it's the pull of the Supremes/Motown Records which may draw fans to the CD and not the tracks slated for Ballard's solo debut.

There is some irony with the inclusion of the Motown Records' selections, since Ballard - as part of a settlement with the company that was finalized in early-1968 and included a cash payout of nearly $140,000 - was forbidden to ever mention that she was a member of the Supremes.

In 1968, ABC Records released only two singles - It Doesn't Matter How I Say It (It's What I Say That Matters)/Goin' out of My Head and Love Ain't Love/Forever Faithful - and put the remaining songs in the proverbial vault, though Ballard had a 2-year recording deal with the label.

Like You Babe has a solid, rock sound and is arguably as strong as the pair of A-sides that were issued, but drew minimal radio play and - because of that - little fan interest.

The remaining nine selections are of varying quality, with the arrangements a venerable hodge-podge, almost like an audition tape for a new artist attempting to sign a deal, not for a famous vocalist from one of the hottest groups of that time.

There has been bootleg copies of the "album" available for many years and even the recordings of the studio rehearsals & alternate takes were floating around for the most curious of fans who were willing to do a little searching.

It would have been a better release if the 14 cuts, rehearsals and alternate takes had been packaged together to give the listener a more complete picture of Ballard in her brief time with the label.

Ballard was not given the time or real quality material to succeed as a solo artist. The reasons are many - and there were plenty of rumors then that Motown Records may have played a major role - but Ballard deserved better.

    5 out of 5 stars Fallen Star..........2007-03-08

This is a great CD and Florence Ballard could have very easily replaced Diana Ross when she left the Supremes and held her own. She has a really, beautiful, thick voice that just mellows you out when you listen to it. It's like you have to stop in mid-track whatever you're doing, to give her your undivided attention. Her voice almost puts you in a trance.

However, her voice does sound kind of sad, she has a pain in her voice similar to Billie Holliday's. The last few tracks are songs that she led while she was still with the Supremes and you can hear the difference in her voice. She sounds much happier and bouncy on the Supremes tracks than she does on the tracks she sang alone. Bless her heart, she really did try to pick up the shattered pieces and make a new start.

This album didn't go anywhere because Florence wasn't allowed to be identified as a former Supreme (this was part of her departure agreement). Because so much attention was given to another member of the group, the public probably didn't even know her name or Mary's name for that matter. Also the ABC label didn't have a "Black" division in their department so they really didn't promote it. I also believe the Detroit radio stations refused to play it because they were completely behind Motown all the way.

This is a good CD but it's kind of sad to listen to. It's melancholy, bittersweet. It makes you thankful that someone finally released this album, but it also makes you sad to think about what could have been, how far she really could have gone.

If you want to hear how well 'Ms. Blondie' could sing, this CD is for you. Ms. Ross wasn't the only one in the group with talent, Mary and Florence just never did get their chance to shine. This CD finally gives Florence that chance. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Oh, so disappointing..........2007-02-22

After reading for many years about Ballard's big voice and the suppression of her talents as a backup singer for Ms. Ross, I had high expectations for this disc, even after reading the reviews that all mentioned sub-standard material. It is true, with the exception of two tracks slated as singles, the material is either uninspired or inappropriate ("The Impossible Dream"? Come on!). However, I was unprepared for the lack of fire, intensity, charisma, "star quality," call it what you will, in Ballard's singing. Frankly, her vocal abilities, as displayed on the (wisely) unreleased tracks from her aborted solo album, are best suited to backup work. Perhaps it was her well-documented depression, or problems with substance abuse, that resulted in these lackluster performances. If you, like me, are expecting to hear a voice that was a cross between Aretha and LaVern Baker, you will be sorely disappointed. Ballard's cover of Edna McGriff's "Heavenly Father" can't hold a candle to the original - another poor A&R decision, enabling us to make a direct comparison with a truly superb and underrated singer (seek out the McGriff import compilation while it is available). For Supremes completists only.

AS OF 2/15/07 I HAVE NOT RECEIVED THIS ORDER. WHERE IS IT?!

4 out of 5 stars The right Songs.......2007-01-29

The music ABC gave her was not the best. Listening to the tracks on this CD, I think with "Ain't that Good News" and "Buttered Popcorn" on a single she would have had a hit!

by the way, I'm not Jeff who's listed as the reviewer. who is he??????

For many violin fans, Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) remains, quite simply, the greatest. Heifetz's perfect tone and electric playing weren't always subtle, but you can't deny the awesome power of his virtuosity and precision. Heifetz: The Supreme gathers some of his best-loved works--violin concertos by Sibelius, Glazunov, and Tchaikovsky--along with a few gems (Gershwin's Three Preludes, Bach's Chaconne from Partita No. 2) into one, remastered two-CD package. The Bach may be too intense for some tastes--it's an impassioned, romantic reading--but Heifetz is merely being himself. On the Sibelius and Tchaikovsky violin concertos, though, his skills are undeniable. Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony provide the perfect accompaniment for the violinist, and Heifetz simply lets loose. Heifetz's Gershwin transcriptions are an added, fun bonus. If you haven't been introduced to the glory of Heifetz, here's your chance. With remastered sound, he's never sounded better. --Jason Verlinde

    5 out of 5 stars The Greatest...........2007-07-25

A wonderful CD which nicely showcases the talents of one of the greatest violinists ever. I loved it

4 out of 5 stars A good taste of Heifetz's musical style and technical supremacy.......2006-04-09

As always, Jascha Heifetz shows his technical mastery of the violin in this CD. He plays each note with intent and a precise control unparalleled by other violinists. His tone quality is also quite good.

While the Tchaikovsky showcases Heifetz's finesse, Heifetz's rendition of the Brahms concerto (esp. the first movement) is very moving. He also shows off his musical range in other pieces; for example the first movement of the Sibelius violin concerto has a quiet & mysterious element, while the last movement of the Glazunov is full of energy.

However, Heifetz's rendition of Bach's Chaconne is different than most. For those who enjoy a more traditional interpretation, I would go with Nathan Milstein's version.

4 out of 5 stars This is Great stuff.......2005-03-27

    That Jascha Heifetz was a great violinist, no one can quibble;
but if you want only one version of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto it has to be Isaac Stern's for perfection. It must be said, though, that Heifetz and Ricci play a much more difficult version of this concerto than does Stern. Stern's score has more cuts. If you've got enough money to get Heifetz' complete discography, do so. If you want only one disk of the Tchaikovsky, it has to be Isaac's. Nobody did it better. You can get the other Heifetz tracks on other compilations. I would recommend owning both the Heifetz and the Stern recordings because the versions are so different, and Heifetz shows you in this recording the
phenomenal technique he possessed that was made the standard of all violinists after him. You can also see Heifetz perform this
concerto (excerpts) in the video 'Carnegie Hall'. The man was simply astounding.

5 out of 5 stars Long review, but please read........2005-02-16

I am also a violinist myself of 13 years. I have played most of these violin concertos almost a year ago.
Heifetz delivers his interpretation to the audience. I always viewed Heifetz as very stern and a reserved man, that he did not show any emotion.
After listening to this CD, my judgment was suddenly changed.

To start with, the Bach Chacconne deserves much credit. Heifetz recorded this live (I have the video)around the age of 70. Despite his age, he performed this piece with such passion and power. His vibrato was perfect for Bach's baroque style. I have listened to this over 300 times (no exaggerating).

Then, there's the Brahm's violin concerto. Heifetz DID play a little fast, but his interpretation made up for it. I personally loved his 3rd movement, which was flawless. As I listened to it, I could feel his bow contact with the violin string. It was unbelievable.

Then, the favorite of mine, Tchaikovsky's violin concerto was incredibly played. Even Kyung Wha Chung's musical ideas could not compete with Jascha Heifetz's perfection. I loved the musical parts, which was very emotional. It was great. Also, I just want to point out the 3rd movement. In his harmonics (the notes that sound like whistling) it was so pure and neat that I simply could not describe it in words, You must hear for yourself.

The Bruch's Scottish Fantasy was one of my favorites. The introduction was so mellow and sad. Once again, I really cannot describe it in words. I advise you to listen to this right now.

The Sibelius Violin Concerto, one of my favorites, was simply played inconceivably. His tone quality was exceptional, and I could not believe such power that Mr. Heifetz had in him.

His Glazunov Concerto was great too. I loved his tone quality and interpretation.

Finally, his Gershwin preludes added a final jazz touch to the album which would enlighten all the listeners after all those minor keyed concertos.

I encourage, no recommend, no COMMAND you to get this album now. I promise you. You will not regret it.

4 out of 5 stars ok for bargin.......2003-09-20

This two cd set is a good bargin for $16. It has good song selection including the chaconne by Bach, Concerto in D major by Brahms and Tchaikovsky, etc..

The remastering of the concerto's by brahms and tchaikovsky were not as good as what I had expected. If you are only looking for these two concertos, you may want to try the "living stero" version. The Scottish fantasy, chaconne, and sibelius in this recording sounds better than the brahms and tchaikovsky.

Overall, this is not the best cd for serious collections, but a good deal for those who want lots of songs for a bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars It sounds great, and ..........2004-08-30

... I wonder how much the awesome result is due to the Rudy Van gelder re-mastering process rather than to the DSD-SACD new teach. I wonder sometimes if the music major are trying to sell us the n-th remastering and try to make us re-buy our music collection again and again. It would also be nice to compare the same re-mastering hi-rez DVD-A and DSD-SACD.

BTW I am astonished how much better it is compared to my vynil (I did not buy the red-book CD waiting for a hi-rez re-issue :-) )

5 stars to the music (I'd vote 6 starts if possible ...) and 5 stars to the sound

    5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent.......2003-12-28

This is a classical album... so there's not so much to say about it. I want to say something instead on the format SACD.

I've got the CD version, the Vinyl version, but with my player, apart of the "silkness" of the vinyl, the SACD is simply fantastic! This new format is quite perfect... and i don't understand why the software house don't move to replace the old CD that have so many limits, comparing for example to the obsolete but still excellent VINYL.

    Please.....
