Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues--"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"--coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

Tamala Motown is responsible for some of the most enduring pop classics in history. This CD is a true testemant to one of the most talented duo's ever.
It's a shame however that The Onion Song is not included; however i have a feeling that this may be because at the time this song was released Tammi Terrell was so ill nobody knows whether or not it is actually her voice heard on the record.

Motortown Revue: 40th Anniversary Collection
Various Artists Manufacturer: Hip-O Select ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000BPJ3FW Release Date: 2006-11-13 |
Product Description
Berry Gordy, starting in 1962, decided the best way to market his artists and their songs and his labels and company, was to take them on the road. No matter that certain residents of the South might shoot at the bus (they did), or that the schedule was impossible to maintain health or sanity (it wasnt, but they had fun), or that being on the road meant no hits were being cut back in Detroit (there were enough stockpiled): the Motortown Revue rolled on and on, becoming an annual event for several years, including a now-legendary European tour. Subsequently, there were Motortown Revue albums every year for three years (1963-65), then a final one in 1969. The early ones were raw but drenched in excitement: your then-and-future Motown stars tearing up crowds at New Yorks Apollo, Detroits Fox and Pariss Olympia. That excitement shows surpasses even language, as you will discover on disc three of this four-CD set when the MC in Paris announces Le Tamla-Motown show...avec Earl Van Dyke et sien sextet! As Van Dyke and company launch into Too Many Fish In The Sea, the French crowd goes ballistic. And while Smokey Robinson apologizes to the audience for not being able to speak French, the audience hangs on every word of Ooo Baby Baby. Available for the first time on CD (disc 4, from the Fox in 1969, made it to CD for a moment but was quickly deleted), and painstakingly remastered from the original tapes, The Motortown Revue Collection isnt content with merely being a welcome escapee from the vaults. Its packaged in a breathtaking oversize book jacket; each disc is housed in a sleeve thats a mini of the original LP jacket. The awesome booklet, using most of the original artist bios and essays and photographs from the old tour programs, replicates the look and feel of sitting at one of the original Revue shows. And how about this bonus: a repro of an original tour poster is included in the package.

Marvin Gaye sparked so convincingly with his singing partners that some listeners still believe he and platonic friend Tammi Terrell had a romantic relationship both on and off their records. So this collection is a natural, hanging together through a half-dozen partners and several production styles and eras. (Note: the Gaye-Betty Wright "duet" on "Distant Lover" is a mid-'90s trick of technology, no doubt well meant but tacky in sound quality at the very least.) The Marvin-and-Tammi tracks, including a looser alternate take of the fab "Keep On Lovin' Me Honey," are the highest points, but some less celebrated gems also stand out. "After the Lights Go Down Low," with Mary Wells, is a ballad that outclasses the two sides of their single included here, while "I Want You 'Round" is a worthy confection for Gaye and Kim Weston. Finally, while 1973's Diana and Marvin LP was a somewhat slight, mercenary effort, the rare alternate of "Pledging My Love" that closes this set is sweet. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

It Takes Two.......2003-03-14
Philadelphian Tammi Terrell had a beautiful, soulful voice that blended perfectly with Marvin Gaye's voice. "You're All I Need To Get By" is a truly gorgeous song, filled with love, longing, and soul at its finest. The song has a remarkable pulse and energy; both singers shine and soar. Tammi's life was tragically cut short; she died of brain cancer at the age of 24.
Kim Weston paired with Marvin to record one of my all time favorite songs- "It Takes Two." This upbeat, joyous duet is one of Motown's finest moments. When Marvin and Kim harmonize, without words, their "oohs" are sheer magic.
The powerful voice of Mary Wells (famous for "My Guy") is a great counterpoint to Marvin's smooth power. "Once Upon A Time," recorded in 1964, is an interesting song with a cha-cha beat.
If you are not familiar with Marvin's duets, this CD is a good place to start. I also suggest the CDs Marvin Gaye & His Girls; The Complete Duets (Marvin & Tammi); Together/Take Two (Marvin & Kim); and Diana & Marvin.
Really Good Collection.......2003-01-25

The ultimate Marvin Gaye box set.......2004-09-20
Disc One, 20 Top 20s, contains all of Marvin's Top 20 hits (not including duets) in chronological order, from 1962's Stubborn Kind of Fellow to 1982's Sexual Healing. Disc Two, The Duets, contains classic as well as previously unreleased duets with four different singers. There are five 1964 recordings with Mary Wells, three of which were previously unreleased. These are followed by four previously unreleased duets with Oma Page. Page had basically replaced Mary Wells after Wells signed with another label, and songs such as Was It a Dream could really have been big hits. Kim Weston is featured alongside Marvin in five recordings from 1967, including the hit It Takes Two. Of course, when you think of Marvin duets, you think of the incomparable Tammi Terrell. All six of the Gaye-Terrell recordings you find here are immediately recognizable (and well worth listing individually here): Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Your Precious Love, If I Could Build My Whole World Around You, If This World Were Mine, Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, and You're All I Need to Get By. Up next are four duets with Diana Ross from the early 1970s; although the two performers were far from close and actually recorded their parts separately, these are terrific songs. Three of these, including My Mistake (Was to Love You), made the charts, but the best of them all, the best version of You Are Everything I've ever heard, was never released as a single. The final recording on this CD is 1979's Pops, We Love You; this song, a tribute to Pops Gordon, Berry's father, features Marvin, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder.
Can this collection get any better? Oh, yeah. Disc Three features nineteen "Rare, Live and Unreleased" treasures, starting with Marvin's first single Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide and its B-side track Never Let You Go (Sha-Lu-Bop). Highlights from the mid-1960s include The Christmas Song (performed live at The Apollo in 1963), covers of My Girl, It's Not Unusual, Sunny, and Sweeter as the Days Go By. Four early-1970s previously unreleased masterpieces include the incredible I Love You Secretly (aka My Last Chance); I Want to Come Home For Christmas; 5, 10, 15, 20 Years of Love; and You're My Everything (aka I'd Give My Life For You). Then we come to a set of live tracks, starting with sterling performances of Come Get to This, Distant Lover, and Jan from a 1974 concert in Oakland. Last and certainly not least is Marvin's unforgettable performance of The Star-Spangled Banner from the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. If you saw that performance on television at the time (and I did), I'm sure you remember it.
Marvin always loved to sing ballads, and Disc Four gives us the best of The Balladeer. The first ten tracks come from Marvin's early career, in which he shaped his sound around that of great balladeers such as Nat King Cole. Highlights include Straighten Up and Fly Right, Too Young, Mona Lisa, What Kind of Fool Am I, Mack the Knife, and Happy Days Are Here Again. The final seven tracks come from the late 1970s and Marvin's then-unreleased album Vulnerable, and they basically redefine the very concept of the ballad: Why Did I Choose You, She Needs Me, Funny, This Will Make You Laugh, The Shadow of Your Smile, I Wish I Didn't Love You So, and I Won't Cry Anymore.
There you have it: 81 unforgettable tracks (34 of them previously unreleased) canvassing pop, rock, blues, ballads, duets, funk, and other styles of music Marvin Gaye pursued and mastered. The fabulous 32-page booklet is just sweet, sweet icing on the cake, featuring a number of wonderful photographs, an overview of Marvin's career and tragic death, information on every song included in the collection, and a listing of all of Marvin's Motown albums, complete with track listings and cover photos. It has been 14 years since this box set came out (in 1990), but if there's a better box set out there, for any performer, I certainly haven't come across it.
