This rough-hewn 1966 club date finds the original Temptations in their prime, complete with hordes of screaming girls. A couple of Berry Gordy's beloved adult-crossover standards slow the flow, but ultimately the energy, the voices, and songs such as "My Girl," "What Love Has Joined Together," and an extended, testifying "Don't Look Back" can't be stopped. A valuable reissue. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-09-14

I'm only 18 years old and I love the Tempts! This group is amazing! I love all the songs on here. You can hear everything clearly. David saying "Thank Ya!" throughtout the songs! Yesterday/What Now My Love was beautiful I loved that track! He sang so beautifully effortlessly! The girls screaming for Paul when he's singing Don't Look Back I could just see him smiling at them! Uhg I wish I was there but This album really made you feel like you were right there at the Roostertail. I think this is one of the best live lp's the tempts release I also think that if you like this lp you have to get live at the copa! whoo! that lp it incredible. buy these two lp's you will not be disappointed if you are a true tempts fan!

4 out of 5 stars All The Way Live.......2006-03-09

I remember when this was first released and how excited I was to be able to hear The Tempts live.
I was only ten years old at the time so the only time I got to see them was around the Christmas holidays when the Motown Motortown Revue came to the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
Anyway this recording gives a hint of their ability to entertain and enthrall onstage.
BTW- A 'live' version of 'My Girl' from '65 is on their 'Lost & Found' joint, probably the first time they'd sung it live.
The performance is nearly flawless save for David's voice cracking toward the end of 'Yesterday/What Now My Love'.
Anyway IMO one highlight is 'I Wish You Love' with Eddie on lead.
This is a very, very well recorded release.
Crisp and never muddy or distorted.
I haven't tried it on either a surround, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 system, just plain stereo but the audio information it contains is excellent.
Especially considering when it was recorded.
The Tempts are front and center and you can tell when they switch positions, not just leads but when Melvin and Paul
change places with Eddie and Otis on 'My Girl' for just one example.
That is to say you can tell who's standing next to whom and all that.
The audience is primed and enjoying the show and their comments and reactions ( grunts, shrieks, screams etc.) are clean and clear.
I wouldn't call this a 'Desert Island' must have but if you were to have to choose between this and say.....the latest new R N B joint then get this.
Sure its a short program but well worth the time and money.
Exciting, professional performances and recording.
There should be more material like this by them and others from this time period including The Marvellettes, Otis (Redding),Aretha, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Supremes (never saw them live unfortunately), Marvin etc.

5 out of 5 stars Temps Live.......2006-02-09

Wow, remastered. Have to get it. I still remember being in the 8th grade playing drums in my basement in the South Side of Chicago. All of the kids on the block would peek through the block windows to hear me beat to 'Don't look back'. It is an unbeliveable album. Must have. I am curious about the video. I know this had to be recorded on flim somewhere. I wonder who has it and when will it be release!

5 out of 5 stars TEMPTIN' TEMPTATIONS.......2005-07-01

Long before this album/cd first came out, my brothers and friends always considered the Temptations the greatest singing group of all time. All you have to do is listen to the women scream during this incomparable show. That says it all. The black groups today can never ever compare. What has happened to the romance and soul?

3 out of 5 stars Incomplete Re-issues.......2006-09-07

The series of 2 Classic Albums 1CD has brought back into catalogue a lot of lost Motown gems, usually in state of the art mastering and at a reasonable price, and is to be applauded for that. In some cases, it falls short of the ideal, and this is the most striking example I have encountered thus far. To start with, there is the choice of pairing. Live At The Copa was the group's eighth album, from December 1968, and their second live album. With A Lot O' Soul preceded it by three album in August 1967. In between came The Temptations Wish It Would Rain and In A Mellow Mood, both of which share another pairing in the series. Go figure.

More crucially, both albums are incomplete. Two key songs are common to both original albums, (I Know) I'm Losing You and You're My Everything, both major hits for the group. Firstly, (I Know) I'm Losing You is dropped from the end of Live At The Copa, as the applause from the preceding title is hastily and peremptorily faded. Apart from destroying the flow of the original conception of the album, it makes that track unavailable on CD.

Secondly, the studio version of You're My Everything is criminally absent from With A Lot O' Soul. Although this track is available on a number of compilations, its censorship from its rightful original album placing is unforgivable. No reference is made to these cuts, although both titles are shown in the replica sleeves from the original albums as reproduced inside the booklet. As the CD has a playing time of 72:15, both could have been included.

Live At The Copa marked one of the first concert appearances of Dennis Edwards in place of David Ruffin, and took place at the Copacabana in New York at an unspecified date in 1968 (some further details would have been welcomed). It shows how quickly and successfully he integrated into the group. The set mixed familiar Motown material with Broadway standards popular with the sophisticates of the day (an audience being wooed by Berry Gordy), and mostly taken from their In A Mellow Mood album. The recording is jinxed with technical shortcomings, mostly frequent microphone clickings and a badly distorting overload during I Wish It Would Rain, though there are also some very clumsy edits between songs, notably after The Impossible Dream. Whether the latter were on the original album, and so are excusable on grounds of historical accuracy, or are further examples of butchering by the re-issue compilers is unclear.

The Temptations With A Lot O' Soul is a classic Temptations album on many levels - the line-up, the producers and arrangers, the songs - and regarded as among their best of their "old style" releases. Although most of it was produced by Norman Whitfield, there are three Smokey Robinson productions of his own songs (recorded over the summer of 1966), including a cover of Marvin Gaye's Now That You've Won Me; one produced by Frank Wilson; one by Ivy Jo Hunter; and unusually one from the Holland/Dozier/Holland team, Just One Last Look. This is very much in the style of the Four Tops, who did also record an unreleased version in 1967. Two of the others are also in arrangements reminiscent of the Four Tops, the single (Loneliness Made Me Realise) It's You That I Need (originally a single for Eddie Holland in 1963) and Sorry Is A Sorry Word, an Eddie Holland/Ivy Jo song consigned to the B-side of All I Need. The mastering of the studio album is very good, although All I Need does lose a few seconds from the original album version.

The range of the band is shown to excellent advantage and though David Ruffin is quite deservedly the most prominent lead vocalist, Paul Williams is given No More Water In The Well, Otis Williams leads Don't Me Send me Away (both Smokey songs), while Eddie Kendricks sings both Save My Love For A Rainy Day and Two Sides To Love. David and Eddie shared the spotlight on You're My Everything, had it been included.

I hope Motown continue to activate the catalogue with these priceless re-issues, but that they learn from the rather botched job they made of this important release and perhaps prepare a corrected version.

HERE ARE SOME ACCOLADES TO THE MAN WHO DIRECTED THE BAND AND ARRANGED THE MUSIC DIRECTION OF THE LIVE SHOWS- MR CORNELIUS GRANT. HE WAS NOT ONLY THE LEAD GUITARIST, HE WROTE A FEW OF THE TEMPS BIG HITS SUCH AS "I KNOW iM LOSING YOU AND YOURE MY EVERYTHING. MY COUSIN NORMAN ROBERTS WAS THE DRUMMER AT THAT TIME. LIVE SHOWS SPEAK NOT ONLY FOR THE TALENT OF THE SINGERS, BUT FOR THE MUSICIANS WHO READ THAT SHEET MUSIC NOTE FOR NOTE AND COULD WRITE MUSIC AS WELL. MR GRANT HAS BEEN A FRIEND OF MINE SINCE 1961. THIS IS FROM A PHILLY INTL STUDIO MUSICIAN

5 out of 5 stars This one's ok........2003-06-25

I'm not overly impressed w/the Copa part of this cd. They just don't seem to be enjoying themselves as much. Which may be a reflection of what was going on in the group at this time. Now, on the Temptations LIVE!, now that one rocks!! I really wish I was there!! You can hear them doing the claps that go w/certain dance moves (for example My Girl). The audience is going wild and it just seems like a more fun and personable show.

I love Dennis, but I love David more, so I was quite happy to hear him on AWLOS.

Cool two-fer, but if u want real live action, get Temptations LIVE! I might have to buy another one if I wear mine out!!

Edit:7.23.03

**I so take back my previous statements!! While this show doesn't have the same live feel of Temptations LIVE!, it is still a great show. I believe it was Den's first w/the group. He slides right in. He doesn't try to be David...he's Dennis and he was on fire!!! I love the improv stuff he does during I Could Never Love Another. Paul is great, EDDIE IS GREAT (Check out You're My Everything, With These Hands, and Please Return Your Love to Me).

These guys were the masters!!! I am a young fan at 20, but these guys envoke more out of me than ANY group of my generation that I probably SHOULD be listening to! I can't speak about the current crop.as I am a Classic/Hall of Fame Temptfan, but purchase anything with The Voices (David, EDDIE, Paul, and Dennis) and you will NEVER be disappointed!!!

The With A Whole Lot o' Soul cd is classic also. I'm Losing You is the perfect opener for the disc. I love hearing Cornelius Grant on the guitar and Ruffin's heavy breath saying "Ooohooo. Your LOVE is fading!" It sends shivers up my spine!!

I read where people said things are missing from the original Copa LP. I wish they would have left whatever was missing on. I am a sucker for live shows. It shows what a group is really made of.

So cop this one. You're in for a treat!!!

2 out of 5 stars missing 2 songs!.......2002-11-13

I was very disapointed in this cd. As all the other reviews stated the LIVE AT THE COPA portion is missing the last song (i know i'm losing you) but also, WITH A LOT OF SOUL is missing one of their best songs ever YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING. Can anyone tell me if this song was not released on the uk version? Also does anyone notice all the noise during the COPA portion (clicks ETC... And last A WARNING! about THE 2 fer SONG FOR YOU/MASTERPIECE CD. I just read that the masterpieces song are edited. If they are not going to release these cds right, than why release them at all!

3 out of 5 stars Missing a song.......2002-02-14

Great stuff, but Copa is missing the last song. I wasn't aware of it until I saw the reproduced back cover of the original album. They should let a person know on the cover if songs are missing.

5 out of 5 stars Temptations Review.......2006-10-30

This group was started by David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks long before Dennis joined up with them. The roots of this group trace back to 1985 when Eddie & David joined Hall & Oates for a set of Temptations songs. The group was talked about on the Temptations movie during the days when David, Eddie, and Dennis were in it together. Dennis had been in and out of the group repeatedly in hopes of starting a solo career. When the solo career didn't work out, he eventually teamed up with David & Eddie to keep the legend alive. Another former Temptations member Damon Harris has also been in this group, along with David Sea, who will keep the voice and memory of David Ruffin alive forever.

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN FOR YOURSELF; PROOF IN PUDDING.......2005-05-19

Some reviewers of this set seem to have an ax to grind. It wouldn't be the first time, eh? I have probably ground a few myself. However, I do mostly try to be fair and [reasonably] objective in my reviews.

"What right does Dennis Edwards [the one chosen to replace the departing "original" Temp David Ruffin in 1968] have to form a new group..." "Why don't/can't Dennis Edwards and Otis Williams bury the hatchet and get back together..." "I can't see any good in this set."

Well, there is almost assuredly bad blood between original and founding Temptations member Otis Williams and Dennis Edwards. Mr. Edwards left, then returned on one or two occasions.

As for the results of this set...those speak for themselves. One can even sample excerpts from the tunes here.

OK, there is only one surviving member of the "classic" line-up of the Temptations, and that's Otis Williams, who is still recording and touring with his "continuing" group, which, in fact, has had some success with recent albums. That's all to his great credit. Additional fact: Otis Williams, great as he is, only had a few lines of lead singing in the "classic" years. Dennis Edwards, on the other hand, was prominently featured on many, many great hits and album cuts from 1968 into the late 70's and beyond. He had the formidable task of replacing one of THE classic singers of 60's music. He undoubtedly rose to the challenge. And, while not as compelling a singer as Mr. Ruffin, the Temps actually increased their pop and r&b sales [by any measure] after Dennis Edwards took his place in the group. Arguably, that was due do the producing genius of Norman Whitfield as much as any of the vocals.

That being said, if it were me, I wouldn't just roll over and relinquish that legacy, especially if I still had "the chops."

All one has to do is sample these tracks by this new "Temptations Revue" line-up to judge if the voice is still there (it amply is). And, the David who stands in for David Ruffin here has a remarkably similar vocal timbre, while the member who handles the late Eddie Kendricks' parts sounds fine, too. The band is quite tight, as well.

GO AHEAD, HAVE A LISTEN!!

[Plus, I think some props are in order for brother Dennis for doing such a great job of assembling a group the best approximates the sound of the "classic" years. Lovingly done, at that!]

The past is un-reclaimable. It's gone, gone, gone. But, you still have a living, performing ex-lead singer of the Temptations who still has "the chops." Fair is fair.

Now, only one question remains: With so many Temptations greatest hits collections and anthologies available, with original and re-mastered versions and deluxe or stripped-down packages, why would one want to have THIS collection??? Good question. Perhaps an answer would be, this is a live set that "currently" approximates the "original" Temptations sound better than anything else available if one wants to re-live the "old days." Better yet, maybe one should check out the Dennis Edwards Temptations Review when they come to your town, if you are a fan of the Temptations or classic Motown. Then, this set would be a souvenir of sorts. And, what's wrong with that???

Also, Otis Williams' re-assembled Temptations, which I saw in Florida in July, 2006, do a real good job of crowd-pleasing. This group includes former [for a very brief time] Spinners member J.C. Cameron [who sand lead on their classic, "It's a Shame."] who is an incredibly gifted vocalist. Plus, the replacement for the late, venerable bass Melvin Franklin, is vocally very strong.

How's THAT for a fair and balanced review? Happy listening!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2002-11-08

I bought this cd with the intention on getting to know Dennis' group. BIG MISTAKE! First of all who put this cd together? It is such a pathetic job of editing it's almost a comedy cd. The sound quality is horrible and muffled on some of the songs. The rendition of Dont Look Back should have Paul Williams spinning in his grave. I tried to give Dennis the benefit of the doubt and so I purchased a ticket to the now defunk Tom Joyner soul tour. Now I know why the rest of the shows were cancelled. Dennis looked and sounded horrible his voice is just not there anymore which is truly a shame. It was painful to watch and hear him. His group looked like a bunch of guys who got together after shooting pool and decided to form a group. There is only one decent singer in the group the rest were just pathetic understudies. I can't see how they are considering themselves keepers of the flame. I cant ever recall The Temptations looking and sounding this terrible. I saw the new Tempations 4 years ago they were okay they don't compare to Paul,Melvin,Otis,Eddie and David but at least they looked and sounded good.

5 out of 5 stars Dripping with Guido Sweat..........2004-06-07

Guys, if you like to dance pec-to-pec with shirtless, sweaty, italian men, then this is the disc for you. And ladies, if you like to have random afterhours sex with New Jersey guidos, then this is the disc for you.

(...). Recorded the night of the infamous "Von Dutch Riots", if you listen close, you can here the local sounds that have enticed travelers to the Jersey Shore for hundreds of years -- the waves crashing on the beach...the water guns being shot in the mouth of a ceramic clown...the girls named "Bella" mooing.

No matter where you are, this disc will relieve you of life's drama, and let you relive the times driving down the GSP in the leased import luxury sedan your parents gave you for "graduating" community college. Simply put, this is the most unique, unforgettable music that you will ever vomit to.

Denny Tsettos [known overseas as the "Irish Horse Face"] plucks each beautiful song like a boisenberry and throws each one in your face, splattering the juice and seeds all over your cheeks and neck. Yeah, take it like a shot of dbol, you vixen you.

Oh, and the song "Hot Shot City" is particularly good.

5 out of 5 stars Every day can be a hot summer night at Temptations.......2004-06-03

If you are a club goer from the tri-state area, Denny Tsettos is a household name to you. For those who aren't, Denny is a reknowned DJ, remixer and producer who has been packing the dancefloors in the tri-state area for years and equally kicking out some of the dancefloors biggest remixes. This CD captures the essence of a hot summer night down at the New Jersey shore club Temptations. The cd is full of Tsettos' signture style, banging beats with spices of vocals. Don't think this is any other mix cd with beats for over a n hour and once its done all you have to show for it is a splitting headache, because this cd is not that. Denny keeps you moving from beginning to end. For all NY'ers, on those cold snowy January Saturday nights when you are stuck home because of a snowstorm and its 3 degrees out, pop on this cd and it will be a 95 degree hot August Saturday night!!!

Ready for every major hit the Temptations ever had? Recorded live..this CD features performances by the original TEMPTATIONS. It's a knock out of R&B performing that you won't soon forget.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars the temptations live as it gets.......2002-12-20

The cd is a recording of the 3 leads of the Temps. Eddie, Dennis and David when they reformed in the late 80's and early
90's so that why it sound so different the only voice that sounds good is Dennis Edwards. there have been about 3 releases of this U.K. cd. one is the original leads of the temps and this one and I forget the other one. It is not live at all and i never have felt so ripped off.

BUYER BEWARE IT STINKS!

1 out of 5 stars COMPLETE GARBAGE!!.......2001-04-05

This CD is a definite disappointment!! Dennis is the only Tempts' voice that is recognizable. The CD sounded more like Dennis Edwards and The Temptations Review. Not even close to a "live" performance. It's obvious the songs are studio recordings. To make matters worse the CD I purchased was such a bad quality CD, all the songs can't be heard. I would definitely like my money back. This was a definite waste of time and money!!

2 out of 5 stars live?.......2001-02-25

this album, while decent in vocal performance,is a "fake" live album! there are no liner notes. there is no crowd! it is as "live as it gets"!
