Jumping high heels first into the Christmas genre, Toni Braxton has come up with a spectacular first effort. Teetering into smooth jazz territory, Braxton gives her sophisticated, breathy vocals a workout on this untraditional Yuletide collection. Instead of revamping old holiday standards, Braxton has cowritten seven new songs--with husband Keri "Mint Condition" Lewis, her sister Tamar, David Foster, and Kenny "Baby Face" Edmonds--and has created what sounds more like a proper Toni Braxton album than a seasonal offering. When Braxton did decide to cover a classic, she choose more contemporary tunes such as perennial favorite "The Christmas Song," which she revives with aplomb and crisp pacing, and the beloved "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," which she doesn't tinker with at all. Braxton also pulls Charlie Brown's "Christmas Time Is Here" out of mothballs and gives it a contemplative, melancholy spin that serves the tune well. "Snowflakes of Love" is penned by Braxton and Lewis, and uses the same instrumental that Memphis soul giant Isaac Hayes recorded for the soundtrack for 1974's Truck Turner, giving it a jazzy, masterful feel. The real standout on the album is the reggae-spun "Christmas in Jamaica" with the raunchy, comic vocals of Shaggy. Like the snowflakes it's named after, this CD is a real original. --Jaan Uhelszki

Back in the '70s, the rapid development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards had a huge impact on popular music, with Isao Tomita among the leading exponents of multimedia, surround-sound events associated in Western Europe with such very different musicians as Rick Wakeman and Jean-Michel Jarre. The present disc has less grandiose aims, being a well-balanced selection of, to quote the original liner notes, "Virtuoso electronic performances of Debussy's beautiful tone paintings." It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Tomita's approach--take some of the most poetic music around and give it the consistency of aural cotton wool--yet there's no denying the skill with which he translates Debussy's soundworld, preserving the harmonic interest of the piano originals and bringing out many subtleties of texture. Inevitably the slower numbers come off best--"Clair de Lune" or "Reverie" could easily become chill-out favorites. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," however, is not so much a travesty as a vaporization of the orchestral masterpiece. A mixed bag, but with enough musical interest to make Tomita's "sound clouds" of more than just curiosity value. --Richard Whitehouse

5 out of 5 stars Another great electronic adaptation of classical music by Isao Tomita.......2007-06-02

Released in 1974, this all electronic adaptation of works by Claude Debussy is really quite good and showcases Isao Tomita and his flair for synthesizer wizardry. I think that Isao more or less captures the dreamy and haunting mood of Debussy's compositions and also adds a bit of his own (humorous) flair here and there with some "light-hearted" synth sounds.

The music on this album was recorded entirely with a moog synthesizer although the sweeping and majestic sound of a mellotron with string setting pokes through the mix on occasion. As a big synthesizer fan, I thought it was interesting that the various settings on the moog were listed as "equipment" including things like oscillators and lowpass filters etc. This particular synthesizer was pretty versatile and a virtually infinite number of sounds could be generated, as is amply demonstrated by Isao on this album.

In addition to the works originally included on Snowflakes are Dancing, the last track was taken from his Firebird album (1976) and is another work composed largely on the moog synthesizer although other keyboards were used including a Fender electric piano and a Hohner Clavinet C.

The sound of this high performance CD is excellent and trust me, the changes in dynamics virtually leap out at you.

All in all, this is an excellent recording of electronic music by an excellent electronic composer. Highly recommended along with his 1976 adaptation of The Planets (by Gustav Holst).

5 out of 5 stars A classic!.......2007-05-12

This was one of my favorites for years. Tomita has a way of presenting classical music that will captivate every sense.

4 out of 5 stars clair de lune again.......2007-05-07

I owned this in cassette form many years ago and wanted it in undated mode. I bought this strictly for the rendition of Clair De Lune

5 out of 5 stars Synthesizers are Dancing.......2007-03-28

During the seventies, the prog music of Yes, (early) Genesis, Renaissance, and especially Emerson, Lake & Palmer cast a hypnotic spell over legions of high school nurds such as myself. Much of what held it together was a fascination with the sounds eminating from the still somewhat new Moog Synthesizer. It wasn't long before my high school art room pals & myself began looking for anything Moog, and found quite a bit outside the rock music pantheon, most notably the 'Switched On Bach' recordings of Walter/Wendy Carlos. They were interesting, but nothing quite prepared us for the release of Tomita's 'Snowflakes Are Dancing'. Perhaps it was because the timing coincided with a 'high' point in our collective psyhedelic experimentations.... Debussy's music is already an alternative, ethereal experience in the classical world, and Tomita's choice of sounds & production techniques put this recording in a class by itself (umm... especially with a pair of good headphones). I am happy to report that, upon listening to this well produced CD release with nothing more than a cup of herbal tea, I was happily transported once again. It is one delightfully Bizarre recording. 'Highly' recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A seminal work that stands the test of time.......2006-08-03

Tomita was one of the early pioneers of electronic music. This CD, originally released in the 70's, was at the time a masterpiece. That was in the days of patch cords and laborious manual over dubbing, so not every cut is up to today's standars. Still, the finer pieces on this CD stand with anything ever done in the genre: luminous, melodic, and even entrancing. At its best, a magical CD highly recommended not only for the connoisseur, but for anyone who enjoys synthesized music.

3 out of 5 stars The first two songs are great but then. . . ........2006-11-01

Toni Braxton's "Snowflakes" starts off with a blast. Braxton seductively pulls you right into the first two songs, "Holiday" and "Christmas in Jamaica" (featuring Shaggy)--both are funky, upbeat numbers with great melodies that linger in the mind. However, the rest of the album devolves into the kind of boring middle-of-the-road mush which would not be out of place on a Kenny G album. The material isn't helped by Braxton's languid delivery. Classics like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" are included here but they are also undistinguished. Overall, Braxton sounds as if she could do most of the songs on "Snowflakes" in her sleep.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing! .......2005-12-07

This CD is a dissapointment to me. It does not have very many of the much-loved classics on it, most of this cd is crappy, second rate album filler christmas music. With all the Christmas classics out there, I am not quite sure why Toni felt the need to put so much junk filler music on it. A waste of $15 if you ask me! Some of the songs are a little bit overdone as well.

5 out of 5 stars This album is SO GOOD ...........2005-12-05

that I'm buying it a 2nd time - we relocated this year & all my Xmas CDs disappeared. This is one of few I HAD to repurchase because Christmas just isn't Christmas unless I hear Toni's Christmas CD. Altho I consider myself a TB fan I don't own all of her albums, but this one is a keeper & can be listened to year round. There are very few albums (Christmas or not) that I can listen to from beginning to end, but Toni makes it easy to do here. I love all the new songs as well as TB's rendition of the classics. Snowflakes' original recordings give you a feel for the season just as much as the remakes. When TB begs Santa on "Santa Please" to bring her man home, I wanna contact Santa on her behalf & say get her man home NOW!! If we ever move again, this CD stays with me! Worth every penny - BOTH TIMES I PAID!

4 out of 5 stars A VERY DIFFERENT BUT NICE CHRISTMAS ALBUM.......2004-12-21

I love this album. On most Christmas albums, artist tend to sing and remake the old classic Christmas songs but the majority of this album are songs recently written and produced my Keri Lewis who's Toni's husband and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. My favorite track is track 8 which is titled THIS TIME NEXT YEAR which is a love and Christmas song mixed into one. Overall, this is a good Christmas album and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, jazzy, groovy Christmas!.......2004-12-16

This is a great CD. I don't know why I didn't get it any sooner. What attracted me to get this album is her rendition of "Christmas Time is Here" which I hear on the radio every so often. It's too bad the other songs on the CD don't get as much airtime.

I especially like the first track "Holiday-Celebrate"; it starts off so dramatic and powerful and really sets of the mood of the entire CD. I've always liked Toni Braxton's singing style - very expressive and sensual. Most all of her albums have "hit" songs, and this one won't disappoint.

True there are tried and tested Christmas classics, and there's no need to say which ones are better or worse. Everyone is free to celebrate the holidays in their own way and thus we should surround ourselves with elements that fill the senses and evoke those personal holiday memories.

So if you want to hear those childhood holiday tunes or the standard holiday classics, there are plenty of those and we welcome them year after year. But if you want to hear a smooth, groovy, jazzy music laced with a holiday theme, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, wonderful &c........2003-12-08

Not many people know about John Lanchbery. He was a wonderful ballet conductor in the '60s and he was a composer too: he wrote, among other things, the music for a ballet film called "Tales Of Beatrix Potter". (Now, if you don't know that film or that music, you have to check it out - be ready to make a friend for life. It's Frederick Ashton and the Covent Garden and boy is it something. It was, as if this weren't good enough, directed by Reginald Mills, who edited THE dance film: Michael Powell's "The Red Shoes"). Now - as to this disc: a fine hour-long condensation of this long and variegated score. It's a
well-articulated, even idiosyncratic performance - not exactly smooth and creamy like Ormandy and the Philadelphia's, and this is a good thing. We've all heard this music so many times, the last thing we want is something nondescript. Lancbery swings the hell out of this music, and he gives us detail, depth, and cogency too. The Philharmonia sound great, particularly the brass, as well as the woodwinds (who get a lot to do in this score). In short, it's a winner - maybe not as polished as some others, but tons of heart, which is ultimately what counts with this music. Get it and trip the light fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets.......2002-07-17

Since a small child, I have loved the music from "The Nutcracker." This CD does not disappoint, more importantly, it is a good value with all the full body of a professional orchestra, all the many different pieces are performed, and I was flooded with pleasant memories as I listened raptly. I'm glad I bought it. This will be a wonderful addition to anyone's classical music CD library.

I have loved this album and also Tomita's Mussorgsky album ever since my Mom first played it for us in 1974 to help us fall asleep at night. I have an ancient cassette copy I've been playing ever since. Now I play them for my children at night and use to great effectiveness when meditating. This music is truly timeless and moves the soul. I have yet to find any other music that can truly relax me in the manner this does. (Maybe I revert to being five and sleeping in my parents bed!) Anyway, I would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates classical, electronic or new-age music although I am none of these! Turn out all the lights, get comfortable, and let this wonderful music soothe your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05

..."Snowflakes Are Dancing" is definitely one of Tomita's best, but a big box set of every classical Tomita album on CD would be even better. Most of the Tomita albums that have been out of print for years are absolutely fantastic.

Here's the complete list...

Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.

Pictures At An Exhibition 1975 (Mussorgsky)

Firebird 1976 (Stravinsky: Firebird. Debussy: Prelude To The Afternoon of A Faun. Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain)

The Planets 1976 (Holst)

Kosmos 1978 (Star Wars Title. Space Fantasy- R. Strauss: 2001 Title, Wagner: Ride of The Valkyries and Tannhauser Overture. Honnegar: Pacific 231. Ives: Unanswered Question. Rodrigo: Aranjuez. Grieg: Solveig's Song. Dinicu-Heifetz: Hora Staccato. Bach-Tomita: The Sea Named Solaris)

The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)

Bolero 1980 (Ravel: Daphis and Chloe. Pavane for A Dead Princess. Bolero. Mother Goose Suite)

The Grand Canyon 1982 (Grofe)

Canon of The Three Stars 1984 (Pachelbel: Canon. Rachmaninoff: Vocalise. Albinoni: Adagio. Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. 4 pieces from Villa Lobos: Bachianis Brasileiras 2, 4, and 7)

Live At Linz, Austria 1985 (With big speakers on both sides of the Danube River and live soloists. Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Japanese Traditional: Cranes In Their Nest. Vaughn Williams: The Lark Ascending. Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde-Liebestod. Beethoven: Ode To Joy with full Choir.)

Live In New York 1988 (Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Dukas: Fanfare. Mahler: Symphony 3 in D Minor - 5th Movement. Traditional: Chinese War Lord Going Home. Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue. Fisher-Dvorak: Goin' Home.)

These last two are my all time favorite live concert CDs by far.

5 out of 5 stars The works of Debussy , by Tomita ,capture the essence........1999-04-15

The works of Claude Debussy , like the works of the great impressionistic artists of the times , mark the transition from formal classical music forms to the modern era . Debussy for me is the foremost genius of the impressionistic musical form. Isao Tomita far exceeds the work of Walter/ Wendy Carlos or any other synthesizer artists I have heard.

    5 out of 5 stars Great collection!.......2006-10-23

These two CDs are filled with very interesting and quite charming works for a very decent price! Although not all of these recordings are the best ones available, all of them are very well played, making this album an absolutely enjoyable collection, for children from 1 to 92!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music!.......2005-02-09

My 3 year old loves listening to the story and music of Peter and the Wolf. Each animal is represented by an instrument. Peter is the violin, the bird is the flute, the cat is the clarinet, the duck is the oboe, Grandfather is the bassoon, the horn is the wolf, and the drums are the hunters. When my son hears the different sounds he loves identifying the characters. The other music is lovely and it's great to listen to in the car. I highly recommend this CD.

    3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2001-07-17

Yes the music is good, but how could they make a recording of 'Carnival of the Animals' that did not have the rhyming narration before each animal. Beware.

2 out of 5 stars My thoughts on this favorite.......2007-01-09

This would have been a great CD of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, however the actual volume of all the pieces are so LOW! You have to have the volume on your stereo way up just to hear it at an audible level. Disappointed in this CD only because of the volume factor.

    5 out of 5 stars Family Favorite.......2000-12-04

I asked for this particular recording on cassette after watching the Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" on television many years ago. Since then, I have heard many different renditions of Tchaikovsky's score, but none compare to this recording. Mackerras and the London Symphony work together in such a way that the ballet comes alive in one's imagination; the tempo is perfect, and the drama is evident.

This CD of excerpts is good for someone unfamiliar with the ballet -- it gives all the highlights. It's also great for someone unfamiliar with the works of Tchaikovsky, for I find it's very representative of his work (and I think it's his best overall).

This CD is now part of my family's tradition -- played while we decorate the tree and during Christmas Eve dinner. In fact, I'm buying another copy for my Mom, since the cassettes have seen better days! This is easy to integrate into your holiday music collection, and is guaranteed to put you into a festive holiday mood.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker (Highlights).......2003-03-15

        This is an AWESOME CD.
The Bells on # 7 will make you shiver. These are the scariest bells I've EVER heard. In Boulder City Miss Amy Does The Nutcracker Yearly. This Is 1 cd she use's. It has a Great Chinese, Spanish, and Battle. The Battle is The Best I have ever heard. On # 2 When Drosselmyer Comes in, there are Bells in the background(Like Miss Amy's). I would recomend this cd to any body. If you are doing the Nutcracker I would Strongley suggest Geting This CD. It is Just Highlight but it is the best Nutcracker Cd I have out of 54.
