Wonderfully American.......2007-05-14
When I listen to this CD now, and which is most surpring to me, I hear a profound pride in America - back "before." I play it when I have people over and we put burgers on the grill. This CD is the song of sitting in my back yard with the clouds blowing by and for the moment things feel OK.
"Before" - OK, there is no old perfect Amercia; but I'm thinking of the time before we learned to distill petroleum into toxic pollution, before pride meant vanity and thuggery, before hate-filled invective became public amusement, and before presidents went to war because it was good for business.
A Gersh-winner.......2007-01-07
The existing films of Gershwin (who died of a brain tumor at age 38 in 1937) show him to be a virtuoso at his instrument. His 1924 acoustic recording of Rhapsody In Blue (with the Paul Whiteman orchestra) is further evidence of this. But no film or recording has what is contained within the album GERSHWIN PLAYS GERSHWIN: THE PIANO ROLLS, and that is-- full fidelity range.
The CD comes in a standard jewel case packaged in a heavy paper slipcover. Biographical liner notes are included along with details on the rolls. The earliest performance in this set is from 1916, made when Gershwin was an 18-year-old song plugger. My favorites here are "Swanee," from 1920, and "An American In Paris," from 1933, which is undoubtedly one of the last significant piano rolls ever made.
Gershwin's dynamic performances are not in the least obscured by the few extra notes added to the piano rolls (such practice was standard in those days). Listening to these recordings is like sitting next to this brilliant man, observing his fingers fly over the keys as he plays some of his best work.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 60:36
Interesting... but I think I'd prefer a good Gershwin interpreter.......2006-05-14
This album is charming in its own way -- a taste of the music and performance style of a bygone era. Someone complained that these rolls were edited. So what? I'm going to review the final product, now how it was made. Do you eat sausage? Ask not what's in it!
I like to listen to this CD in short bits -- a few songs at a time. For some reason I find it to be fatiguing if I listen for more than 20 minutes or so. I'm not absolutely sure why this is so. Possibly the meter is just a little too metronomic on many of the songs. This lends a "mechanical" quality to the performances.
Additionally, I felt that the dynamic range was restricted. The music does get louder and softer, because of the piano rolls themselves and because of the computer programming used to read the piano rolls -- the dynamics were deliberately adjusted by the record producers in some spots, if I read the liner notes correctly. And yet. And yet. Still these songs do not dynamically "breathe" fully in and out the way they ought to. I find this disappointing, but I think it has something to do with inherent limitations in piano roll recording technique. I'm guessing.
Taken for what it is, it is an interesting concept, and the sound quality is very pleasant. The performances are very good for piano rolls, but fall short of what a good interpreter could do. Take, for example, the Rhapsody in Blue from Woody Allen's Manhattan soundtrack. Listen specifically to the piano part -- the dynamics and variations in rhythm. This is not by any means the best performance of Rhapsody, but it is better than the Gershwin rolls.
Gershwin's playing overated.......2006-04-09
transcriptions of Jelly Roll Morton's piano rolls (on the same label) instead because most of those are exactly how he played them and in my opinion Morton was a better musician in every way than Gershwin.
The jazzy Gershwin. What a CD!!!!!!!.......2006-02-23

At 14, child prodigy Alison Krauss signed to Rounder records, wooing critics and beguiling both bluegrass and country stalwarts with her nimble-fingered champion fiddling and inimitable otherworldly soprano. Though 1995's Now That I've Found You is credited as her mainstream breakthrough, 1990's I've Got That Old Feeling bridges her remarkable career into adulthood, capturing the public's interest in bluegrass. Barely past the threshold of womanhood, Krauss possesses musical agility far beyond her years, as well as the soft sweetness of the girlhood blush. The efficacy with which she and her band approach each song is marrow deep and tenderly precise, be it on the banjo rave-up "Will You Be Leaving" or the multi-string delay-beat of "Winter of a Broken Heart." Witness to the promise of a stellar future is the Floyd Cramer-esque piano-led "Tonight I'll Be Lonely Too," in which Krauss shines like the sun, her splendidly emotive tone and phrasing somewhat reminiscent of a young Dolly Parton. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:
Best of the early years.......2006-07-12
So if you're already an AKUS fan, you can scoop this one up and enjoy every lick! And if not, this is as good a place as any to test the waters.
Bluegrass Queen Alison Krauss Reigns on this Recording.......2004-06-26
How many albums do you have that have perhaps a few good songs on it, but just as many songs that are just filler - instantly forgettable and barely listenable? This is a CD with NO filler. Every cut is a "keeper" and I could just listen to the whole thing back to back over and over again.
Alison Krauss is a national treasure, and this recording is one reason why.
Brilliant early album full of great songs.......2003-12-15
There are no really famous songs on this album, but the quality of all the songs is high. Sidney Cox (of the Cox family, a noted bluegrass group with which Alison recorded a gospel album) wrote four songs including the title track (a bright, upbeat song) and Tonight I'll be lonely too (an outstanding ballad). Other favorites of mine include Steel rails (a brilliant train song), Endless highway, Will you be leaving and One good reason, but there are so many great songs here and it may be that your favorite is one I haven't mentioned. The overall feel of the album is bright and upbeat.
If you are unfamiliar with Alison's early music, I recommend that you buy Now that I've found you - A collection, which I've already reviewed. That includes one track from each of her early albums, plus tracks not available on any of her other albums so far. If you have that collection and you are looking for more of Alison's early music, you will enjoy this.

This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph LanzaCustomer Reviews:

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Oh, Baby! Rhythm & Blues to Soul.......2007-01-04
I GOT A FEELING...THE BEST OF consists of 28 songs, recorded 1962-1969 on Sue and Veep labels, in semi-chronological order. Disc packaged in white standard jewel case; total running time: 72:19. Booklet includes an essay by Wyndham Wallace, track information, and several photographs. The sound quality is good.
Tracks 1-9, 12, and 13 are from 1962-1963 (the majority from the 1963 "That's How Heartaches Are Made" LP). Tracks 10, 11, and 14 are from 1965. Tracks 15-28 are from 1968-1969 (the majority from the 1968 "With You in Mind" LP). There is a mark-ed difference between the early 60s and late 60s recordings. The earlier recordings are Rhythm & Blues records, in the tradition of Ruth Brown, or an updated LaVern Baker. The later recordings (starting with track 17, the funky "All Around the World") transition into Soul music.
Baby Washington's early hits (recorded after leaving the group The Hearts), 1959's "The Bells (On Our Wedding Day)", "The Time", and 1961's "Nobody Cares (About Me)", are not included in this compilation. If this collection was more comprehensive, I'd give it 4 stars.
I could compare her voice to LaVern Baker, but the best comparison I can make may be considered an odd one: Jenifer Lewis. Baby Washington's voice is very strong, almost authoritative. And it is similar to that of Jenifer Lewis, the actor known for playing "everybody's mama" (from Tupac Shakur's in "Poetic Justice" to Angela Bassett's in "What's Love Got to Do With It") in films, as well as appearances in "Madea's Family Reunion", "Mystery Men", "Sister Act", and starring as the fictional singer Jackie Washington in the satirical comedy mockumentary "Jackie's Back!". As a singer she has sung backup as a Harlette for Bette Midler and performed her composition "Black Don't Crack" on Rosie O'Donnell's talkshow.
Don't expect any Jazz recordings - "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good" is an up-tempo Soul version of the Duke Ellington classic. Her rendition of the ballad "At Last" is done similarly to Etta James's version. Three songs are composed by Washington herself (tracks 6-8). Overall, the collection is a mix of ballads and up-tempo songs. And, overall, it is very enjoyable.
Great early stuff, Super later stuff........2006-03-21
