3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

This review is 2005 and little did anyone know what his carrer would be although PJJ was laready huge at the time of this release. I don't know if this was want he or his label wanted. But if you like smokin guitar riffs this CD has it. A few tracks are quite dated but several tunes could have been released at anytime in the last 15 years and still be great tunes. One of my favorites is Morning Joy. other notables are Personal Touch (smooth, laid back with acoustic)and Lost and Never Found (nice vocals). PJJ closes out with his cover of one of the great hymns and indicating his spiritual bond in the classic Great Is His Faithfulness.

This is such a great album. If you compare this album with her first one...It's like the album of the last five years!lol. She has matured, her lyrics are waaaaaaay better than her debut album, there are no "confusing" styles,It's just R&B/Pop with ballads. And her voice has improve a lot too.

    02. Make It Clap Now:10.I looooooooooove the beats. It is such a catchy song.

    07. Hit Me Up * Interlude
    08. I Came to Play:9.Is a great pop tune.I love the melody is so catchy!.

    16. So Sorry * Another Interlude
    17. Alright:7.A forgettable song,is not bad,but is just Ok.
    18. Make It Clap Now [Remix].It is worse than the original one, that was obvious hehe, but it is listenable.

    5 out of 5 stars If you've heard Kaci Brown's "Instigator," here's some more..........2005-12-06

Wow. This album surprised me. I wish I knew why Amazon does not provide audio samples for every release... and it is probably not proper to disclose the on line shop where I DID find samples for this album, so I'll just say I managed to sample this album before buying it, and in doing so was completely drawn by one track in particular (the title track); "I came to play." If you have the opportunity, check it out. Natalise's first album (ironically samples of that one DO exist on Amazon) does not appeal to me so I will not compare. This album mostly consists of 'shake-your-body' R&B-ish grooves (that's a good thing), even though one track ("get me off") tauts some grungy electric guitar punches and an agressive vocal delivery. Don't let the lengthy track listing fool you, as there are many of those "skits" in between cuts (I've never understood that trend, and I find them annoying, but that's what mp3 players are for... you don't have to rip those cuts to your portable if you don't want to). But I digress.

A word of caution to parents, as this album does not seem to sport a Parental Advisory sticker; along with vulgar language in the skits, there are curse words some of the songs as well.

I must note that the rhythms on this album are incredible; tight, strong and refreshing cut-throat beats with stabs and grooves that surely make you want to do more than foot-tapping. Hats off the rhythm programmer(s).

The overall production & feel of this album is similar to Kaci Brown's "Instigator" album. Fans of Destiny's Child, Willa Ford, even Britney Spears will not be disappointed. "I Came to Play" is a solid album throughout and offers enough variety within, rather than stretching the idea of one single.

3 out of 5 stars Loved her first album, this... not so much.......2005-08-11

This has a different feel from her first album. The ballads are still there, but some songs have more of a hiphop feel to them rather than pop as in her first album. On these songs the production is way off, I really dont think her voice is suited for it. She even tries out rock in "Get Me Off" which is the worst song on the album. I'm not sure how she can go from a song like that to a ballad on the next song. It totally disrupts the feel to the album.

Talking about disrupting the flow of the album, she throws all these meaningless skits on the album. Which sounds like filler time.

I'd still buy it, but re-record it cutting all the excess trash off it.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm soooooooo impressed.......2005-08-04

A friend of mine has Natalise's first album and I thought it was pretty good. But I was not prepared when I bought her new album. OMG this album is SO AMAZING! It is much better than my wildest expectations! We don't have any big record stores in my little town, so I had to order it and it and I forgot about it. Then when it came I was like, "okay, let's see what it sounds like becaue the clips on her website where pretty good". But EVERY song on this album is AMAZING! I love the slow songs, and she printed all the lyrics. The fast dance songs sound REALLY good in the car with the volume cranked all the way up! This is just all-around an absolutely stellar album. Natalise did an incredible job on it. I would not be suprised to see her win a Grammy one day!

4 out of 5 stars Romance! Music! Comedy! And ELLEN FOLEY!.......2000-02-02

Live stage shows are an art form much overlooked in America; so finding this CD was a wonderful surprise, as it allowed me to enjoy something I wouldn't otherwise ever have a chance to see: a play starring my favorite actress, ELLEN FOLEY! I've always been more impressed with her acting (NIGHT COURT) than her singing (BAT OUT OF HELL) and this CD contains more of her presence and personality than any record I've heard her on! It's mainly the story of a woman who has 2 encounters with a man who, while he comes across as optimistic and uplifting on the surface, is really a self-destructive personality with problems of his OWN! (I could probably relate because I've met the type!) Highly entertaining; highly recommended! (Now if only someone would reissue her solo album, NIGHTOUT; or get her to do a new album... we can hope, right?)

1 out of 5 stars The Music hall version.......2001-11-27

This sounds like a revue rather than a coherent musical comedy. One can't help but feel that the forces involved with this project didn't take it too seriously since Rochester doesn't even appear on the recording (he had a prior engagement!) and the liner notes are given over mainly to explaining why the work never appeared on the West End.

Even considering the age of the recording, the singers sound weak and/or wobbly. Buy this as an historical curiosity, but don't expect an uplifting, polished, professional experience. For that, you need the Gordon/Caird Broadway version.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2001-10-11

This musical has beautiful music mixed with sad tones and lovely harmony. The singers portray their characters flawlessly with the emotion they sing in their songs, from sadness to happiness. I believe this musical is a joy to listen to and will fill a place in any musical theater's person's heart.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2001-09-05

The reason why I purchased this item is because I wanted to compare it to the Paul Gordan musical. I was sadly disappointed with this 60's version that tried to make Jane Eyre a comedy rather than a dark and gothic musical that the novel portrays. I tried to listen to a full song, but couldn't stand it and turned it off. From what I have just listened to, the show doesn't equal the newest Jane Eyre musical at all.
