Album Description

Betty married Miles Davis in the late 60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, introducing the jazz great to Jimi Hendrix and inspiring classic work like "Bitches Brew." She herself had been strongly urged to record by Marc Bolan of T. Rex, and turned down both Eric Clapton and Motown to keep control over her own work and express it as nasty as she wanted to be.

Rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweil to Ludacris have rhymed over her tracks. This amazingly progressive debut showcases her revolutionary talent and features such gems as "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Game Is My Middle Name."

Originally released in 1973, "Betty Davis" was recorded with a who's who of San Francisco stars - from Sly & the Family Stone's rhythm section to backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters, while Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico produced the album.

This deluxe reissue features gorgeous packaging, a treasure trove of previously unreleased bonus tracks, rare photos and archival material, and new notes from Oliver Wang (SoulSides).

Album Description

For the first time, Betty's critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early `70s. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over the intensely strong but sensual funk of Betty Davis. One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of this R&B pioneer. Ms. Davis's unique story is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late `60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic jazz-rock fusion album Bitches Brew. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters. In addition to the restoration of the incredible original cover art, the albums feature compelling and heartbreaking liner notes written by author and respected soul music scholar Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides) and include her second interview in decades, making these essential reissues for any soul or funk-rock collection.

Album Description

Featuring a futuristic cover predating David Bowie's science fiction funk, Betty Davis crafted an inspired second album, leading with "Shoo-B Doop and Cop Him" (later sampled by Ice Cube) and made up of classic cuts like "Don't Call Her No Tramp" and the mesmerizing punk soul of "He Was A Big Freak." This was the first album Betty produced entirely by herself and she really sharpened up her songs and performances for it.

This 1974 masterpiece will finally receive a long-overdue proper reissue with Part Two of Oliver Wang's liner notes and an endless array of photos and archival material, plus a number of previously unreleased bonus tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Betty Davis?WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-03

Betty Davis is an artist I've been hearing a lot of hype about for years.'They Say I'm Different' is an album I've been hearing about forever as well.I was almost entirely certain there was no way that this album could possibly live up to the hype.Well when Light In The Attic records decided to put this out on CD,.....well to put it mildly this MORE then lived up to it's longheld mystique and hype. The best way to describe this music is unhinged and unpolished funk.EVERY song on it fits that description. As for Betty Davis's singing,it lays somewhere between the the styles of Tina Turner,Sly Stone and Janis Joplin. All of the songs celebrate her liberated spirit but there's one that just blows you away in less then a second."He Was A Big Freak".......I don't know WHAT MAN she was referring to but she really paints herself as a wild, wild funky diva BIG TIME here;she wails out about her "man" who enjoys being tied up.The Ohio Players did a lot of S&M based album art at the this time but TALKING OPENLY ABOUT IT,A FEMALE FUNK SINGER?And it never seems like a gimmick either because you actually believe she lived a lot of the "wild style" she speaks about. And the grooves on that and every other song here are as raw a funk as you're probably ever going to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Smelly, stinky, smelly smelly funk........2007-04-12

Look it up.

Funk.

You'll know why I give this five stars.

Just relentless dark funk. This is IT.

2 out of 5 stars Demo Tape Funk?.......2006-07-17

Great vocals -- but that's about all. No real songs, no real lyrics. Stream of consciousness female singing to a bass guitar. The music sounds very amateurish, as if it were produced by high school students in a garage. It sounds like a demo tape. And it is pretty repetitive in style (or consistent, if you want to look at it that way).

This overpriced CD half as much music on it as a normal CD.

5 out of 5 stars Most under-rated female musician of all time?.......2006-07-13

OK, so Betty Davis was never a great singer (neither was David Bowie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and so many other singers that made it really big in the 60s and 70s) but she had spirit and was really under-rated as a song writer. I bought this album for a very obscure reason. I heard bits of it on the Miles Davis documentary A Different Kind of Blue and it seemed intriguing. It was a bit risky to spend so much money on it (it isn't even remastered with bonus tracks or anything and I doubt it will be any time soon) but I decided to take the chance because sometimes I make some really interesting musical discoveries this way. Well, this time it really paid off. I think that Betty Davis may be my favourite funk artist of all time. Its important to note that it isn't all her that makes this album great. She is backed by a tight band which plays brilliantly, but her energy is definately a big part of it and the songs are all her's. Its not surprising that Miles Davis fell for her, because she sounds like a really interesting person. All the songs are good, but my favourites are Shut off the Light, Talking Trash, Dedicated to the Press, Lone Ranger and the title track. One of the songs even has a Led Zeppelin sounding riff for a bit of it, which was strange for a black funk album, but really interesting. I defeinately recommend this album despite the high price!

5 out of 5 stars please, reissue this, NOW!.......2005-07-03

Master piece of the funk. This album (an the other two Mademoiselle Mabry's records) had been in my wish list for years now. Sure I will finally buy them, I'm what you can call the "completist" type.
But I'm a patient man, I refuse to pay so much money for a record. I can pass several times through it in the shop vaults and say NO, and wait until better times come over the records stores of this tiny town. I'm a funk addict, but I can say it.
What gives me strength? This is our culture, man! Can't understand why you USA people, you black people of the most powerful country of the planet, had not force the company to publish it at an affordable price...yet.
My old vinyls had been to so many parties, and I didn't care for them as much as they deserve. And you know, you can get the music some other ways these days too.
Focus comments on the product: There is no other "product" (as far as I know) like this. Here is the lady who broke Miles schemes, showing him the breakthrough way to create the funkiest richest and more addictive music in history (if you like it). In combination with the unique Graham-Enricco machine you can find here things that the great Sly was not able (to our disgrace) to accomplish.
Have the money? Don't hesitate, buy it, you'll dance it, shout it in your car, discover it to your friends.
But it's a pity that this is an obscure piece instead of mainstream, for the kid's sake. They need to know what really swings, boogies, grooves, vamps, shakes bodies and minds. So tell the word.
By the way I'm white, maybe not so proud, but grateful.

5 out of 5 stars The sexiest, funkiest, nastiest woman EVER!!!!.......2004-12-28

My god is this woman BAD!

Not only was Betty Davis the sexiest woman who ever walked this planet, she released several of the greatest funk albums ever produced. Those who know of her usually just think of her as a model who was married to Miles Davis for a year. But she was much, much more than just a mere footnote in the bio of the greatest jazz musician ever.

First of all, I think it's fair to say that Betty Davis was responsible for the development of jazz fusion. Why? Because when Miles Davis fell under the spell of this woman (and what man wouldn't?), she made it her mission to turn him onto the new funk & soul music that was revolutionizing America. She hipped him up to the new sounds and the new fashions, and Miles responded with a creative burst that cemented his rep as the greatest jazz innovator in history. He combined his jazz with her funk and out came jazz fusion.

Well, the marriage ended, but Betty set out to prove her own musical genius, and she did it with a series of albums that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the greatest funk albums ever. She enlisted the aid of the best musicians and let the nastiness flow out of her.

This album, like the others, features her snarling, vicious vocals which sound like nothing so much as a wildcat in heat. It is a primal force of sexuality that is unequalled in musical history. Her vocals are sex incarnate. DIrty, raw, sweaty, up-against-the-wall sex. James Brown sounds like s schoolboy in comparison. Marvin Gaye would be intimidated. Chaka Khan would bow down. Wilt Chamberlain would be left exhausted in a heap in the corner.

Buy any Betty Davis you can find. That is an order.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Undisputed Queen of FUNK.......2006-01-10

Betty Davis is her. If you sat back in your chair and strung together all the elements that make funk music great; laid down a slick funk-rock guitar lick, bottomed it with a fuzzed-out bassline, propped it up with a rock solid back-beat and detailed the body with clavinet lines and great percussion...well you'd have a pretty funky ride...it would be up on hydraulics...and Betty Davis would be makin' the rims rattle.

I'd love to give this album 5 stars - and in fact, if it were instrumental I'd probably be all in. But see, Ms. Davis,(hitched briefly to Miles and hence the name) isn't much for carrying a melody. Betty growls and screeches her way through each selection like an over-sexed, drug-addled freak. And this too, is the thing that makes this music so memorable. There was scarcely a male artist in 1973-74, let alone a woman willing to tackle sex, drugs, and rock and roll so voraciously on wax quite like Betty Davis. Betty's "singing" just doesn't unify the music in any way. Instead it rides on top of the groove and at times, pesters the listener. Thus the 3 stars.

However, if you KNOW funk, you'll want to get this. Just don't expect to be soothed to sleep after a tough day - prepare to get kicked in the head and told to get on your knees.

5 out of 5 stars hard and heavy funk..........2004-12-13

both in the playing, message, and overall presentation...Miss Betty davis was waaaaaayyyyy ahead of her time and wayyyyy over the top. Blues fans will dig the way a greasy slide guitar is mixed into the funk with her roll call of all the r&b artists she gives props to on the title track. This is the cut that shows the irresistible blend of blues and funk. My other favorite moment is "Git in There," which features each band member gettin' funky riffs in (a la Sly Stone, or Graham Central Station): "Ok, Cordell, on that wah wah pedal..."

5 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump Here.......2004-03-13

I thought she'd said it all on her debut, but amazingly They Say I'm Different is even better. The music is more fleshed out and the lyrics more ambitious. Top notch musicians. Larry Graham on bass! Some of the other guys came from Herbie Hancock's band I believe. The title track alone is worth the cash... plus the Miles paeon "He Was A Big Freak" is probably a little too much information...

5 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge!.......2002-08-04

Betty Davis was on the edge. She had a big influence on Miles Davis 70's Material&you can hear Her Vibe. The Music is Smoking&The Musicians are top notch here.Betty Davis Paved the way for many acts with Her Presentation.check this out.

5 out of 5 stars betty mabry davis.......2001-10-25

We had never heard funk like that before. And from a lady.
"They Say I'm Different" was the second of three albums that Betty Davis released during the early-mid 1970's, originally on Just Sunshine records. All the songs on this album which Betty produces, were written and arranged by her.

Of particular note is the title cut "They say I'm different"
This song tells the story of Betty's musical journey. and speaks of her many influences; from blues to soul, from Muddy Waters to Sly Stone. She's one of the reasons why Miles Davis (her x) went in the musical direction he did in the early 70's; ie towards a rock jazz style. She had a great influence of Prince, Madonna, Nona Hendrix, Gloria Trevi, and Larry Graham.

3 out of 5 stars at times amazing and at times lacking.......2007-05-30

taken as vintage groove/funk type music, a few of the cuts on this are A+, early 70's state of the art, cream of the crop. Larry Graham grooves the pee pee out of Anti Love Song and brings the funk to Your Man, My Man... a couple more tracks are uniquely groovy, but then around half the material is sorta forgetable... not that it lacks attitude, Betty Davis wasn't short on attitude anywhere.. and the players sound fine on all the cuts, but the songs themselves aren't all that great... some of the grooves are superlative, extra special, inspired, and some are just kinda cool. if you are a bassist, or a Larry Graham fanatic, Anti Love Song and Your Man, My Man are worth whatever you have to pay for the disc.

    5 out of 5 stars Dearly remembered.......2004-09-23

I bought this LP in 1973 in a record shop in Roxbury, Boston, and was I glad I did, even though one of the tracks, "In the Meantime" is one of the saddest ballads ever waxed. As others on this page have noted, Betty is an original, way ahead of her time, and to me is as interesting a composer as Abbey Lincoln. That says a lot. The reissue may seem a bit expensive but in this case you more than get what you pays for.

5 out of 5 stars Kicks In The Door.......2004-03-13

This album is incredible. Without a doubt, Mrs. Davis was twenty years ahead of her time. Sure, she married Miles and slept w/Jimi but she wrote and sang too. Her attitude makes feminism hide under the bed. The players are fantastic and the music takes no prisoners. Not for the meek. Oh, and yes, that's Journey's Neil Schon on guitar...

5 out of 5 stars introducing BETTY DAVIS.......2001-12-29

Betty's premiere effort is a mixture of instrumental funk and vocal rawness set to lyrics which were way ahead of their times.
This album was released in summer of 1973 and most of the guest musicians had yet to come into their own spotlight such as the
POINTER SISTERS,SYLVESTER and the members of GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION! Betty sings about I.V. Heroin Overdose in STEPPIN HIGH IN HER I.MILLER SHOES, a 3-way relationship in which she is the other woman who don't give a damn about sharing him as she tells the main lady that he's YOUR MAN,MY MAN or as she tells an ex-lover why she had to let him go in ANTI LOVE SONG or the albums only radio played effort and the one for which the album (and Betty) are most remembered IF I'M IN LUCK I MIGHT GET PICKED UP
which needs no introduction as the title pretty much explains the songs meaning. An album which was a first of it's kind as far as musical style, vocals and lyrics for the time. She reminded me of a black Janis Joplin (with a much funkier sound.)

    4 out of 5 stars Weird album! 3 1/2 stars.......2006-01-04

This 1979 album by Mrs. Nasty Funk is a mixed bag, but overall a very interesting weird funk album.
The album was not released at the time it was recorded. It was recorded in 1979 , but as far as I know it was not released until the 90s.
Betty Davis is a bizarre sounding, nasty singer, funky as hell. The music on this Cd sounds sometimes a little dated, which may be caused by the time it was recorded( "Crashin' from Passion" has many disco influenced tunes on it).
On some tunes Betty Davis sounds like she couldn't sing ( pretty much out of tune, especially on the ballads), but somehow, this adds to the whole atmosphaer of this Cd.

The compositions are greatm, the list of musicians on this Cd who accompany Betty Davis is similar impressive - Herbie Hancock, Alphonse Mouzon and Chuck Rainey - and they sound really great and are very funky.

The composition range from Funk, a lot of Disco and some tunes sound like film music. My favorite tunes are "Quintessence of Hip" and "She's a women".

It's an interesting Cd you may need some time to grow into it. I didn't listen to it for almost a year after my first listen.
Betty Davis is a great writer, so-so singer ( partwise too much out of tune for me..) and a great personality. The band is awesome too.

    3 1/2 stars.

    3 out of 5 stars It's Crashin.......2003-04-08

I purchased this album because I needed a funky outlet.
Im pleased with the album, but it left me wanting more. Then a friend told me that this album should not have been the first one that I decided to buy. Therefore, I have pushed on...
So for you first timers out-there pick up Nasty Gal, or They Say Im Different ((((First))))

    4 out of 5 stars Who?.......2000-07-19

Betty Davis is probably one of the best female R&B/Rock musicians that you've never heard of. She wrote what has been described as "ferocious anti-love songs with lyrics like: "He was a big ol' freak/ I used to beat him/ With a turquoise chain." She's best known for her marriage to Miles Davis and her work with Santana, Sylvester, Sly and the Family Stone, and Tower of Power. Davis didn't have a show stopping voice but she did convey incredible passion in her performance. She also released four or five albums in the 1970s before she vanished from the music scene completely, I'm happy to see that this disk is available. Hope you enjoy it!
