5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Album!.......2006-01-12

The songs by Ashford & Simpson reminds me when I was just a lit-
tle girl from 1974-1986! I remember seeing one of their videos
on Music Video 60 in 1984 like Solid! Great Job, Ashford & Sim-
pson, you'll are the greatest singers in The R&B Industry!!!

5 out of 5 stars I'd Know You Anywhere.......2004-09-09

This package is really top of the line. I really like what this group sings about. I mean, Anywhere is the baddest song ever and they have another song off of a very hard to find album Come as You Are the song titled, Tell the Truth which is a strong gospel/soul arrangement. That song should have been placed in this packet cause it kicks!! I really like Valerie the most as she reminds me of a very soulful Carly Simon. I am fortunate to have both of here solo albums that she made back in the early 70s Exposed and Valerie Simpson. But this packet does do some really good songs and I like it a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Sept. 2003 - COME AS YOU ARE - A&S.......2003-09-08

This is a great CD, however, there's one album in particular that I have been looking for since it came out in 1976 -- 'Come As You Are', which contains the song "It'll Come, It'll Come, It'll Come." It's been out of print for so long. Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy from, please.

4 out of 5 stars Some Great Nick and Val.......2003-07-10

Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson know how to write music. From their early Motown hits, to their work with Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and many others, they have written and produced some of the choicest soul music of the last 35 years. Unfortunately, they never seem to get the recognition for their self recorded/produced music that they have received for their work with others. This set goes a long way to showcasing how extremely talented the couple is as a duo.
A&S hit their peak as recording artists with a series of mid-70's albums on Warner Brothers Records, and that makes up the bulk of this set. To me, "It Seems To Hang On" is their single greatest moment in the studio, and listening to this tune is bliss, indeed. Sweeping strings, a wonderful base line and intelligent lyrics sung by two people who are clearly in love with each other make for an epic moment.
Also from the Warner years, the beautiful ballad "Is It Still Good To You" is a beauty of a duet - its lyrics reflect the level of commmitment in a relationship that has gone on for years, and Nick's strong vocals here are a real pleasure. "Street Corner" is another r&b radio staple that sounds great - unfortunately this album uses the single version, rather than presenting the entire "Street Corner Symphony".
Many fans will appreciate that "Solid", A&S's biggest hit from their years recording for Capitol is here - it's a good song, but for my ears, I would have preferred the inclusion of "Babies".
Another unfortunate exclusion is "Stay Free", a beautiful song from the mid-seveties. But it is more than made up for by the inclusion of Quincy Jones's "Stuff Like That", which features Nick, Val and Chaka Khan in what was their only joint recording appearance - these three could have done some great stuff together, given the opportunity (especially when one considers that Nick and Val wrote two of Chaka's biggest solo hits, I'm Every Woman and Clouds).
A great collection, but since it doesn't include "Babies" and "Stay Free", I can't give it a perfect score.

4 out of 5 stars Great Hits Collection, But There's More Where This Came From.......2003-01-20

If you just want a nice collection of some of the greatest hits, this collection does a nice job of giving you just that...

The duo has started their own record label and have re-released two of their rare Warner Brothers albums on cd (avalible on cd for the first time ever). The releases include their very first album for Warner Brothers titled "Gimme Something Real" and their last Warner's album "Performance" which was a live recording with additional studio material. Both cds include the original art work, and could easily be considered collectors items. Once again, if you want the hits, check this cd out, and if you want more be sure to stop by the duo's official web site.

5 out of 5 stars Where Are They Now, And Why Aren't They Still On Top? .......2006-06-10

Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson have, without debate, written, produced, performed & recorded some of the most timeless songs EVER. Whether for themselves or others. Their track record is full of huge successes. Diana Ross alone owes not one, but two albums worth of kudos to this incredibly talented duo. So why in blazes aren't they still in demand on the radio or television or studio? They are what R&B is AND should be.

Right alongside Holland/Dozier/Holland, or even Stevie Wonder, they are responsible for classics such as "Let's Go Get Stoned," Ain't No Mountain High Enough," You're All I Need to Get By," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand" and "The Boss" to name a simply stunning five classics that will never be lost to time. Add to that the still remarkable "Solid" and "Found a Cure" from this collection and the question begs: why are they not still on, or at least very near, the top.

Pint-sized Valerie possesses more melodic soul than any wanna-be "idol" franchise may attempt to crank out. Why Motown didn't get behind her early 70s solo albums is a crime against true talent and potential. And the incredibly talented Nickolas, who's talent measures taller than his height, his own voice compares, if not beats anyone of the last 40 years. While, at face value, this collection is excellent it is pitifully short of what could be representative of this marvelous couple.

5 out of 5 stars Velvety Valerie Simpson and Sublime Nick Ashford...........2001-07-31

....the best R and Bee vocal duo ever.

If I had a criticism of this fabuloso product it would be that it has mostly all their Capitol Records hits...Hey, they put "It Seems to Hang On" from the great "Is it Still Good To Ya" album, on this but I always half expect to hear the single "Is It..." afterwards. Fear not, fans and lovers. This has "Solid" and the great jam "Count Your Blessings" (which always gets a heart tug from me when they go "I almost lost the one I love, searching out for something new") and (Ya Momma Shouldna Told Ya) "Babies" and "I'll Take the Whole World On"....

A Primo Product from A Primo Act...

5 out of 5 stars The Stuff R&B,Soul dreams & songs are made of..........2001-03-30

During the 70's and 80's in the R&B duo groups were names like Rene & Angela, Peaches & Herb, etc. Then there was Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson a married couple who had been in the music writing business since the early 60's penning songs for Motown's Diana Ross and other various artists. Val Simpson had done a few solo projects in the 60's that went shamefully unnoticed by the music industry. Not until the 70's did they write material that would catch the world's attention like Chaka Khan's/Whitney Houston's I'm Every Woman...

It was in the late 70's and 80's the duo started performing their own written tunes. Beautiful tracks like It Seems to Hang On is the stuff sweet soul music is made of;just filled with catchy lyrics and a silky almost jazz-like rhythm.Even their other Warner Bros. disco tune I Found A Cure demonstrated they could keep up with what was popular yet never sell out to trends;they kept their musical innovativeness and originality intact without compromising their outstanding quality to satisfy a flashy trend. The pop-soul driven feel of Solid (while overplayed and killed on the airwaves in '85) is one of their most popular among "non" r&b music listeners. One of my all time favorites from their out of print album Street Opera is Street Corner with it's piano, bass and early synth work still makes it timeless and enjoyable. It's also dancefloor accessible !

It would be remarkable if Ashford and Simpson would release their early solo material from the 60's or to hear them sing the songs that made other artists famous...

    5 out of 5 stars gorgeus.......2000-11-30

This set of their supposedly quiet stay at Capitol records is nevertheless a wonderful selection of music that is consistently good. Compared to the rubbish that is being played on the airwaves including the new R& B artistes who are mediocre and stale save for their outfits, it is comforting to find this ageless music avialable. Macy gray, lauryn hill and the other young and mediocre upstarts could take a few lessons in beauty of voice and humility. I find it revolting that a group like the spice girls have found enormous success with their combined lack of talent. People, forget the garbage of the above singers and dig into the past as there are gems like this treasure that will show what real R& B is.

    5 out of 5 stars solid couple.......1999-09-24

this husband&wife team have been around for so long and have written some of the most impotant pieces in the history of music.and how do they find the time to write great songs for themselves you ask? but oh they do in so many ways it's great songs and production like on any street corner and solid among many.it's a must have.they are a bit underrated when one considers there prolific careers and the fact it hardly gets the love of hardly lesser talented folks. but i enjoyed it much.

5 out of 5 stars Just a question looking for an answer.......2005-03-14

This is not a review but a question for all Ashford and Simpson Lovers. On the Capitol Gold Greatest hits their is a song called Babies. I believe that the song is done by Valerie Simpson but not Nicholas Ashford.
The male lead sounds a lot like Boz Skaggs. Does anyone else come to this conclusion if anyone has an answer, please contact me at shockd@excite.com .Who is the male singer on the song Babies #11.

3 out of 5 stars If only the original 70's albums were issued!.......2004-03-30

There are those music groups whose "best of" is neatly collected
on one or two cds, and those whose best of isn't (either by the sheer multitude of gems or because the collector's taste differs too much from your own). Groups of the first kind e.g. include
ABBA, CCR, Foreigner, Journey; groups of the second kind include
Beatles, Moody Blues, Rare Earth, and Ashford+Simpson. In the latter case there is just no alternative to buying some original albums! In case of Ashford+Simpson that would be some of their
    70's albums. For instance,
only one song from "Is it still good to ya" is included in the present compilation, but I can name 10 tracks from
"Is it still.." and "Send it" that are as good as the 5 best songs on the present compilation. These 5 are: It seems to hang on, Experience, Count your blessings, Love it away, I'll take the whole world on. They are slow going R&B with complex, vocal harmonies at its best. Compared with them, the rest is trivial kind of Disco music (with a few highlights now and then). There are other great R&B bands from the early 70's whose
original albums are sorely missed (or astronomically prized),
e.g. Tavares, Mother's Finest, Jerry Butler (with and without Thelma Houston).

    5 out of 5 stars Power!!!!.......2003-10-22

This is an awesome duo these two wrote and produced music back in the 60's, 70's , and 80's. These two wrote songs for legends like Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin and many others these two even made good songs for themselves and this is a great album it is just missing"Is it still good to ya" but other than that it is out of sight I would recommend anyone who likes Ashford and Simpson or old skool rhythm and blues to buy this album because this is a great album and I really do like it I really enjoy it. My favorites are: High rise, Solid , Babies, Any Street Corner, Found A Cure, and it seems to hang on , and many great other songs I love this album!!!

4 out of 5 stars Second volume of a very good disco series.......2004-02-28

Volume 2 has at least 2 entries that are not in their extended (12" or LP) versions, though most are:

Trammps-Disco Inferno (hey, the liner notes to Vol. 1 said this was on Vol. 3) (10:51)
Ashford & Simpson-Found a Cure (3:46)(this is the 7" version; still excellent but most would prefer the 7+ minute version)
Evelyn "Champagne" King-I'm In Love (3:53) (another short version) (Actually, Evelyn wasn't using the "Champagne" nickname when this hit in 1981. I am so proud to be a font of useless music trivia...thank you Amazon, for providing me this outlet)
Jean Carn-Was That All There Was (3:53)
    B.T. Express-Express (5:06)
    One Way f/Al Hudson-Music (7:17)
Sister Sledge-He's The Greatest Dancer (6:13)
Sylvester-(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real (6:34)
    O'Jays-Message In Our Music (6:23)
Teddy Pendergrass-The More I Get, The More I Want (4:27)
Chic-I Want Your Love (6:56) (despite what I said about The Hustle on Vol. 1, something from Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards needs to be on every disco compilation)
    Chaka Khan-I'm Every Woman (4:09)

I think I'm not giving these discs five stars because the song choices on each volume seem so random. A song from 1975 may follow one from 1982, and there is no reason why any particular group of songs are on any volume. ("Club Floor Classics-The 70's" and Hip-O's "Dance 54" collections work better, to me, because they are more cohesive.) And when you think about it, can each of eleven volumes of this really be THE "best in the universe?"
