Anchored by a greasy wah-wah guitar and pushed along by a no-nonsense, finger-wagging attitude, "Heard It All Before" is the sort of scorned-woman anthem that even dawgs can dig. Credit Macy Gray protégé Sunshine Anderson, who on her debut injects R&B with gritty sass and breathes some old soul life into the game. With a slurred, slightly off-key voice that recalls Mary J Blige, Anderson unleashes little soap operas in which good women are in search of good men, and how those men ultimately fail them. In true soul-mama style, Anderson is at her fiercest when she is at her most rejected, and that determination elevates even some of the iffier material here into triumph. --Amy Linden

A treasure of the musical world........2007-04-14
The best comment about this album came from my seventeen year old son. Just last year (2006) I finally got a CD copy of this priceless work of art and shared it with him. He listened totally enthralled. The selection "Hamletto, or Prosciuttino (sung in simultaneous Italian and English0" caused him to comment, "Well, now I know what Hamlet is about." He since asked me to get the others and has loved them as well. "Backwards With the Folk Song" brought back memories of Voice Lessons and dreary concerts that now can be enjoyed safely from a distance. Today's indie and emo musicians could do well to listen and learn.
I would recommend Miss Russell's work for any teenaged class, they seem to adore her sly wit. Besides, all the French Horn players in the High School band need a little teasing from time to time.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27
Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

Here's the list of Hip Hop Soul albums of lately that I'm feeling:
1/2. Carl Thomas - "Emotional" (2000)
1. Amerie - "All I Have" (2002)
2. Sunshine Anderson - "Your Woman" (2000/2001)
3. Donell Jones - "My Heart" (1996)
4. Usher - self-titled debut (1994) and 8701 (2001); the Confessions CD should go take a nap.
5. Yvette Michele - "My Dream" (1997)
6. Soul For Real - "For Life" (1996) and "Candy Rain" (1994/1995)
7. Mary J. Blige - "Whats The 411" (1992), "My Life" (1994),
"Mary" (1999) [good comeback CD for her]
8. Faith Evans - "Faithfully" (2001) [good comeback CD for her career], "Faith" (1995) and NOT kEEP THE FAITH..THAT WAS HER WORSE CD (even though she had a couple of joints on it)
9. Davina - "Best of Both Worlds" (1998)
10. Leschea - "Rhythm & Beats" (1997)
11. the first Jill Scott CD (1999)
12. Angie Stone's 2001 "Mahogany Soul" CD
13. Frankie - "My Heart Belongs To You" (1997) [before Musiq Soulchild, there was Frankie...he told the Al B Sure vibe to the neosoul/hip-hop soul level - reminds you of a younger version of Musiq]
14. J. Lo - "That Was Me..Then" (2002) [everybody hates J Lo but this is her best CD and it was a Hip Hop Soul CD cuz she worked with mad NY producers] - I don't judge people's music and their personal life the same way so go figure.
15. Veronica Vasquez - "V..As In Veronica" (1995) and "Rise" (1997) [she got slept on crazily!!! Sounds like J Lo with vocal training -- she should be eating on that Boricua diva soul plate, not J Lo even though J Lo's last CD was bangin]
16. J. Quest - "The Quest Is On" (1995) [I'm trying to figure out if Frankie J. and J. Quest are the same artists with different names...because they are both Latino and sound the same when singing].

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

As its title indicates, this 1985 recording marked Barbra Streisand's return to her Broadway roots (significantly, she had dropped her pop-period Guilty perm and returned to straight hair). The CD contains a broad selection of show tunes, from Guys and Dolls's "Adelaide's Lament" to Sweeney Todd's "Not While I'm Around." But let's face it: this may also be one of Babs's most dated albums, due to typically '80s synthesizer-heavy arrangements that simply don't work with the material. Company's "Being Alive" is scarred by a preening alto sax, while West Side Story's "Something's Coming" features what sounds suspiciously like syndrums. But--and it's a pretty big "but"--Streisand sounds more buttery than ever ("Send in the Clowns" may be one of her finest '80s moments), so much so that she often manages to overcome the cheesy production. Now that's a singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Just past the beginning of creating "What Times Are," a musical by (a) pacifist(s) as well as an adaptation of my play "What Time Is It, Neil Armstrong?," which is a sequel to my novel "How Did That Sun Get Out," I am inspired by the yearning apparent in "The Broadway Album"--a yearning not for perfection but for worthwhile ways for people all over the earth and in space to spend time.

Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24
Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26
The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.
There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.
This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.
This is a fun disc to have.
