Baker's deservedly obscure 1983 debut was reissued in 1991, long after her 1986
Rapture CD had garnered a Grammy and established her as a sophisticated, sensuous balladeer. Baker's smoky alto is recognizable enough, but it lacks the emotional immediacy and dramatic phrasing of her later work. The best track here is obviously "Angel," which sounds like a less polished version of Baker's breakthrough hit, "Sweet Love." Otherwise, Baker fans will wince at the turgid arrangement of "Feel the Need," and chuckle over the kitsch horror of Baker trying to negotiate her way through the swirling clutter of the postdisco dance track "Squeeze Me." For completists only.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-01-20
Its Amazing to me that someone can review an older release and say it sounds dated, or has post-disco cliches, etc.Um, yah, it is over 20 years old. I love Chaka Khan too but I dont complain that Feel 4 U sounds dated.
In Los Angeles, Angel was played constantly at kute.fm Which is why i bought the album. But what is really amazing about this album, in relationship to Ms. Baker's later material, is that to me, it sounds like she opened up vocally on it. Yes, there are some unusual-for-her faster tunes and thank goodness. Her voice is literally all over the charts, and not a bum note anywhere. I love her material, but there is certainly a "sameness" quality to her later releases, and this under-rated album added a variety of flavors.
It was a great day for us music collectors who found this one on cd finally and i enjoy it still today, over 20 years later.
sophisticated lady.......2006-02-28
I will listen to anything this woman sings. She could belt out Mary Had a little lamb, and I'd probably buy it? Anita fuses jazz and soul perfectly. This is her first cd and for some reason I don't even remember hearing her songs on the radio then? After Rapture came out, then we started hearing it and it being requested, and I ran out and bought the album. I thought it was new, but it was OLD??? But I still knew who Anita was when I first heard Sweet Love. These songs are priceless, get it, not everything is on the Greatest Hits cd.
Great CD!.......2005-10-01
This is one of Anita's best. "Squeeze Me', "No More Tears", "Will You Be Mine" & "Do You Believe Me" are personal faves. These songs are classic Anita, the kind of cool, smoky, wonderful R&B sounds that we've come to love & expect from this talented artist. Would recommend it for any Anita fan or any lover of great music.
The Songstress.......2005-08-06
I was in love with Anita Baker's voice after a quiet storm radio program in Philly played 'Angel'. I was overjoyed when this disc was finally released and out of 8 songs - I truly dislike only 2...'Squeeze Me' & 'Do You Believe Me' do absolutely nothing for me.
Anita's voice shines on 'Angel', the stunning 'You're The Best Thing Yet', 'No More Tears', 'Will You Be Mine', 'Feel the Need' (where she stretches from the lower to upper register so effortlessly) and 'Sometimes'.
If you love r&b - excuse me, GOOD r&b music, this is an excellent disc to add especially if you're building an Anita collection.
MY FIRST THOUGHTS.......2004-06-02
WHEN I HEARD NO MORE TEARS AND ANGEL .EVEN THOUGH I WAS YOUNG THAT VOICE STAYED WITH ME THEN I HEARD AINT NO NEED TO WORRY WITH THE WINANS AND THAT WAS ALL SHE WROTE I WAS HOOKED.EVER SINCE THEN IVE BEEN A FANATIC OF THIS LADY AND SHE GIVES A HELL OF A SHOW, CANT NOBODY TOUCH ANITA HANDS DOWN

Living in Question...The Answer!!!!!!! .......2005-04-03
THE ULTIMATE ISLAND ROCK BAND!!!!!Their debut recording on indie label LAZY BONES fuses hard rock with an "island vibe" to perfection. Check out "TRADITION" and "IF YOU WANY IT YOU"LL GET IT". LIQ keeps it interesting by mixing the brew with electronic/rock instrumentals "MY MOTHER WAS A SUN WORSHIPPER" and "DEALING WITH CHAR SIU". Overall a great first effort. But to really appreciate the LIQ ENERGY check out their latest release "GREEN" also available on LAZY BONES RECORDINGS. In my experience LIQ is best experienced live...check 'em out!!!!
A NEW VESSEL FOR HAWAIIAN TRADITION.......2004-06-12
It can be taken with some skepticism, a band that tells the legendary story of the Islands through riffs reminiscent of Finger Eleven, Dishwalla, and all genre's in between. The heavy tracks "If you want it you'll get it" and "Tradition" are somehow beautifully balanced by the melodic "Find My Way" and "Aubrey". The tracks fill a niche that was once occupied by the infamous IZ ("of the islands"), but now can appeal to a more suburban-rock audience.
BUY THE ALBUM, ROCK OUT TO THE MUSIC, LISTEN TO THE LYRICS, AND LOVE IT!

SWEET SWEET SWEET POTATO Q'S.......2006-03-19
This is the most uplifting music I've ever heard. If you're having one of those burdensome days, fire this up and see how fast you begin to laugh. Finally we (ladies) have one on the men. I've ordered for all my closest sisters/daughters/friends. If you take life seriously, don't buy it. Otherwise, order it and enjoy. I'd really rate it 5+.
I want to see this on Broadway!!.......2005-12-31
This CD had me laughing and dancing and singing along the very first time I listened to it. Now I want to see it on Broadway -- Sweet Potato Queens' Big-As Broadway Review! It did seem like two tracks (I Don't Want Someone Like You and Give Me a Chance) were out of place here. They are good torch songs but don't match the rollicking, happy-in-my-own-skin attitude of the other tracks. I know I'll be buying other CDs from this performer.
As Much Fun As You Can Legally Have.......2003-11-27
Kacey Jones, whether "live" or on CD is about as much fun as you can have without getting arrested ! I bought this CD on a whim and enjoyed it immediately. By a strange twist of fate, the Nashville-based singer / songwriter / humorist / producer / arranger was appearing in my area within days of purchasing the CD. Her live show was a blast ! Kacey has a great sense of humor, although she can turn out a great "serious" tune equally well. Her arrangements cover many different styles of music, so there's a little something to please many different tastes. I've since acquired all of her CDs and recommend anything she puts out. If Kacey records it, I'll buy it ! Check out her website at: www.KaceyJones.com for more info on this very, very funny and talented performer.

Product Description
Barbara Montgomery has gained a solid reputation as a sultry songstress, once described by a reporter as an ice cream blond with a black coffee jazz voice. The truth is yes her voice is alluring, and her sound sensuous. But to qualify this gifted artist as only a jazz singer is a misnomer, for her music increasingly stretches across musical boundaries into the realm of humanity. With her fifth release, entitled Trinity (2005 -- bjazz.com records, a division of Mr. Bean and Bumpy Music, Inc.), Montgomery takes us on a journey into the felicity and pathos which comprises the human condition. The album was lovingly co-produced by Montgomery with her partner, distinguished jazz pianist Aaron Graves; Graves arranged all the tracks, and five of the songs were written by the duo. As its name implies, Trinity is a spiritual compilation which evokes a range of human emotions grief and sadness, longing and desire, resilience and belief. Montgomery and Graves are joined on the CD by some of todays most gifted musicians, and the result is a poignant, jubilant and thoughtful recording which reinforces the continuity and commonality that exists among us all. Trinity consists of twelve tracks of varied musical lineage, all a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit in the midst of darkness.

LYSA ROCKS!!!!!.......2001-04-22
She's been compared to so many female vocalists, the comparisons have become meaningless. Lysa Flores creates...with words, with music, with her voice...images and moods that surround us. Lots of people will know and love "Beg, Borrow and Steal" from the Star Maps soundtrack - it has an open-hearted, lusty sentimentality that makes me believe in love. But other songs are just as great if not better - "Queen of the Boulevard" brings a girl driving solo through the mean streets of L.A. to the whole world; "Tree of Hope" evokes Chican@ heroes Diego and Frida in a tragically happy folk dance. Lysa doesn't fit into any category - she is the future of music.
Support Independent Music & Bring Your Love!.......2000-08-10
For her self starting work ethic and her thinking-persons music, Flores has been justly compared to Joni Mitcell, P.J. Harvey, Patti Smith, & Exene Cervenka. GEORGE Magazine featured Lysa for "combating stereotypes about her heritage while promoting her philosophy of independence & love." Newsweek Magazine said she was one of the "20 Latinos to look out for in the year 2000." The Los Angeles Times calls Tree of Hope "feminist rock at its best!" Tree of Hope(named after a Frida Kahlo painting) explores biculturalism, love, & social issues, while exploring Flores's talent as a rockin' guitarist and an exceptional singer. BUY THIS CD! It is a must have in your music collection. Did I mention it features D.J. Bonebrake of the band X? Chicana.com wrote -"This album is a masterpiece - an exploration of alternative pop music forms, complete with a chicana twist...
a rockin' latin female voice that knows how to write.......2000-07-08
Lysa Flores,is a multi-talented latin songwriter/singer who can not only rock in her alternative style but hits home on ballads with searing lyrics.

Customer Reviews:
Fraying Yarns.......2003-11-29
It's always difficult for me to write a negative review for a disc like A Thousand Yarns especially when it's obvious that Dawn Dineen put an incredible amount of herself into the songs and their recordings. However when I find that my own notes on the disc are taken mainly from Dineen's bio and other technical information, it's clear that the record leaves little of an impact. Granted, the album is mixed well it's ashame she wasn't able to do more with the content as she wrote all but one of the songs and plays all guitars and bass on the disc. Dineen's mid-level vocal range is not as expressed as well as it could be despite her best Suzanne Vega impression on opening cut "Fleer." "Ant Farm" is fun while "Devour" sounds as if it was penned by Bjork. Sadly, A Thousand Yarns frays before you get to the edges.
strong songwriting from this indie songstress.......2002-05-03
Intimate is the first word that comes to mind. This album really feels like it was made in a spare bedroom (which it was). It has a much warmer feel than a lot of self produced albums (and ones which the songwriter played most of the instruments). In her breathier moments, she approaches Amee Mann, or Suzanne Vega, but that's just a jumping off point. Dawn has a unique vision and songwriting slant. She also doesn't default into tired blues-rock mode like some folksy songstresses do. The arrangements are thoughtful, and serve the songs well. Each of the songs on the album is a piece of the puzzle, they stand up individually, but compliment each other perfectly. The only problem is; i can't decide whether to keep this CD in the car or the living room.
Saw a performance, the cd was just as good........2001-10-25
I saw her perform in Baltimore and she was really good. I was surprised to see such a large crowd for a baltimore club. So I bought the cd and it was just as good. The vocals are smooth and the lyrics are weighty.

Anna is the new poet laureate of Nashville.......2006-03-03
Anna Wolfe combines lyrical wit with poetic magic and acoustic musicality to form a dynamic album. Her wit is charming and rhythmic especially in the opening "Jane's Song." The wit winds its way through other tunes and certainly finds you laughing in the bonus track. But it is her poetry that carries every song. This is matched by her latest muse, the piano. Her flair on the keyboards brings strength to "If My Mind was a Hound" and "Close Call" (which is accompanied by Beth Nielson Chapman). In fact, there is a faint reminder of a sound that I haven't heard since the raw and extremely powerful "The Dreaming" by Kate Bush. Anna's long time fans will find two familiar coffeehouse songs which are great to show the evolution of her music. "How I Love Her" finds a new voice with the accompaniment of producer Wendy Waldman. The Irish influenced "Silver Veil" blends an air of medieval festivity with Anna's great voice. Anna continues to quietly make magic through her excellent storytelling and ever broadening musical landscape. Coming out of a city that is filled to the gills with talent, Anna Wolfe through her album, My Treasure, truly is Nashville's newest poet laureate.
